On this week's Education Gadfly Show podcast, Anne Hyslop, Director of Policy Development at All4Ed, joins Mike and David to discuss the evolving federal role in K–12 education—particularly how the Secretary of Education's waiver authority may—and may not--impact state flexibility on spending and testing under ESSA (the current iteration of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act). Then, on the Research Minute, Amber reviews a new study out of Massachusetts that examines whether students in departmentalized elementary schools perform better in middle school.Recommended content: Anne Hyslop and Dave Powell, ESEA Waivers 101: Explaining the Secretary of Education's Waiver Authority, All4Ed and Education First (2025)Dale Chu, “Waiver and out: How red states plan to push the limits of federal ed policy,” Thomas B. So in your anger and haste, you run to the store to get them everything they need at the last minute. Or maybe your child simply starts getting ready for school or camp 10 minutes before it's time to leave only to have you running late AGAIN!!! If it's any consolation, you're not alone. I've experienced this too, and it is so frustrating. Education News Headline RoundupOver the past few weeks, there have been significant developments at the State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio (STRS Ohio). On May 15, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost initiated an investigation into the allegations of a hostile takeover attempt of the $90 billion pension fund, which serves thousands of educators, by QED Systematic Solutions.Academic publishing is facing a crisis of credibility as journals close and thousands of retractions are issued in the wake of a glut of fake research papers. A study by Nature found that in 2013 there were just over 1,000 retractions compared to 2022 with 4,000 and then jumping to more than 10k in 2023. More than 8k of the retractions came from an Egyptian company called Hindawi, which is a subsidiary of Wiley; the Hindawi brand will be sunsetted and its properties absorbed into Wiley. Wiley has announced they will close 19 journals because of the rise of fake papers.A report by Spectrum News from May 14th alleges that millions of dollars in Texas taxpayer funds intended for a charter school in Odessa were diverted to support struggling Third Future charter schools network in Colorado, of which Houston Independent School District superintendent Mike Miles is founder and with whom he has recently maintained a consulting relationship.Examining the Effects of High-Stakes Standardized Tests on Learning OutcomesThis episode explores the history and impact of high-stakes standardized testing in the U.S., starting with a brief review of the No Child Left Behind Act and its legacy. Discussions include the educational goals of high-stakes tests (such as accountability and standardization), and the reasons why these tests often fall short of bettering educational outcomes for students, including curriculum narrowing and stress on students and teachers. We also delve into recent research, including a 2024 study by Maroun and Tienken, which highlights the significant influence of socioeconomic factors on test performance.Discussion QuestionsWhat are the consequences of "teaching to the test"?Why does the high-stakes testing system persist despite its criticisms? Can we design a system with standardized tests but without high-stakes consequences? What might this look like? What would it take to move school administrators and policy makers toward the idea that standardized tests should inform academic strategies instead of penalties or other punitive measures? How do we develop a system to hold educators accountable for serving students well that recognizes that a student's academic or standardized test performance is not always the best indicator of that student's learning? In this episode, we talk about the summer slip n slide. No, not the fun swim-like activity that gives you a high water bill, but the one that will have your child forgetting so much of what was learned throughout the year. You may have heard it under other names like learning regression, learning loss, or the summer slide. Basically, it refers to the phenomenon where students, particularly school-aged children, experience a loss of academic skills and knowledge over the summer break when they are not actively engaged in learning. But guess what! You can help your child maintain their skills or better yet, get ahead of their peers. I cover what you can do to mitigate learning loss with fun activities and easy strategies. 20 Minutes of Teaching Brilliance (On the Road with Trust-Based Observations)
In this episode, Craig Randall interviews Malik Bryant, a dedicated educator at Martin Luther School, Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania. Malik shares his personal journey from pursuing a business degree to finding his calling in teaching, driven by his innate desire to help others. His story unfolds from his initial job roles to his impactful position at Martin Luther School, thanks to his brother's encouragement. Martin Luther School, specializing in social and emotional behavior support, has a unique approach to education, focusing on behavioral management alongside academic excellence to reintegrate students into their districts. Malik's transformative teaching methods, which emphasize understanding each student's needs, differentiation, and encouragement, are discussed. His approach, based on building strong relationships and fostering confidence through continuous encouragement and a rewards system, has had a profound effect on his students. Belief our poor PISA results stem from our high child poverty. Scores from 2022 in the international OECD test of student achievement show a big fall in Kiwi maths ability since 2018 - a continuing trend. Average reading and science scores aren't significantly different, but have also declined over time. NZEI President Mark Potter says what goes on at home has a huge impact on children's learning. "We've got a higher than OECD average number of children who don't eat on a regular basis at home, and there's a direct correlation with maths achievement. And that's found around the globe." In this episode I share my journey and reasons for joining the field of speech pathology. We also explore the role of speech-language pathologists in advocating for children of color in the United States education system. Here are some key takeaways from this episode: I initially pursued a degree in broadcast journalism but shifted my focus to organizational communications with a minor in speech pathology. Through various initiatives, I became aware of the disparities experienced by Black and Latinx children in the United States education system, including exclusionary discipline practices that lead to the school-to-prison pipeline. This realization led me to discover the role of speech-language pathologists in advocating for these children and supporting their academic and behavioral success. My passion for communication and advocacy came together, and I knew that becoming a speech-language pathologist was the path I needed to take. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ This podcast is sponsored by the Pediatric Speech Sister Network© on YouTube Live. Whether it's a long Winter Break, Spring Break or Summer Break, it's important to understand that your child could lose academic skills simply because their brain is not being exercised and stretched enough to keep the momentum of what was learned during the time leading up to the break. That's why after every long break, teachers spend days sometimes weeks re-teaching children how to behave in school, classroom expectations, and other routines that they may have forgotten. Much of this time is also spent reviewing the previous year's content in order to rejog their memories so that they can begin building upon skills once learned. To minimize academic regression for your child, I talk about some things you can do to prevent what educators call the “Summer Slide”. What if we told you there is a population that makes up roughly 16-20% of students, and it's one that we don't acknowledge or provide adequate support for. These children are ones who fall into the gap between normative academic achievement and meeting requirements for special needs support. This week Ray and Paul have the pleasure of talking with Dr. Steven Shaw on this topic and reviewing his new book: Reaching and Teaching Students Who Don't Qualify For Special Education, Strategies For The Inclusive Education Of Diverse Learners. With the plethora of valuable information, we were only able to discuss two of his chapters on Executive Functioning and Academic Motivation. We hope that you take away as much as we did in this Masters in Practice episode: Supporting Children with Low Academic Achievement with Dr. Steven Shaw.
Today we're discussing a recent study many news outlets have reported on, which looks at the children of same-sex couples and concludes that these children fare the same or better than children of heterosexual couples. We start with some thoughts on "gay marriage" in general from a biblical standpoint, which would hold accurate even if this study were valid. Then we break down the study analysis, which was funded by China (the CCP), and its methodology, which has more than a few glaring issues, and outcomes. We share some studies that have been correctly done, which show that the opposite seems to be true – children of heterosexual couples indeed do fare better by many different metrics. We also share a big show update coming soon! --- Timecodes: (00:43) Show update! You know that moment when you look back and ask, “Where did the time go?” This episode is all about how to recognize when 1 day is starting to turn into 1 year.In this episode, I talk about how to recognize when time is beginning to creep in. 3 weeks ago, I received an email that our beloved fitness studio where I teach and have so many loved members would be closing. We were all devastated. My ask of the members is to keep their momentum going. An object in motion stays in motion. The past 3 weeks have gifted me so much awareness and have reminded me about the pandemic and how things can change quickly without notice. We are coming up on our 3 year anniversary of the start of the lock down and the pandemic. Can you remember what you desired during the slow down? I wanted to accomplish so much during those 2 weeks. And now looking back, I recognize that 2 weeks turned into 3 years. What are you avoiding that is moving from 1 day to 1 year? DM me on Instagram with a ““ emoji and I wanna know what you think. IN THIS EPISODE, I TALK ABOUT:How to recognize when 1 day is starting to become 1 year.An object in motion stays in motion. Keep going. We are coming up on the 3 year anniversary of the start of the pandemic.Ask yourself, “What did I receive from the last 3 years?”

I feel very strongly that if we put in place certain practices, more children with undetected learning disabilities would be identified early and receive appropriate treatment. There's a lot of education that needs to be done about the different learning challenges that students face. And that's why I started this podcast. In this re-aired episode of the Diverse Thinking Different Learning Podcast, I discuss the first step in uncovering why a child is struggling - assessment. Why does a child need an assessment? What does an assessment involve? What does an evaluation tell parents and educators? Let's dive into what an assessment looks like and why it is more than just testing. Show Notes: [1:29] - The reasons you seek an assessment will vary per child, but you see their difficulties are hindering their success. [2:38] - It is never too late to evaluate a child when you see that they are struggling and need some support. An assessment helps you get to the root of the difficulties. [3:35] - Some struggles can be overcome by implementing appropriate intervention. [4:12] - The assessment is so much more than testing. [6:13] - A child's early developmental milestones will also be discussed to find if the challenges the child is having now may have been observed early on as well. [7:23] - Dr. Wilson also explains that the assessment involves gathering information from other sources, especially from teachers. [8:38] - Observations will begin when they first enter the office. [10:04] - An assessment should also involve the child's perspective. It's not only about getting information from parents and teachers. [12:01] - There are several domains that are being assessed during the testing session. Domains may vary depending on the test, but Dr. Wilson breaks down the domains you will find in a comprehensive evaluation designed for determining the root of the problem. [12:27] - One such domain is Intellectual Functioning. This typically asks the child to complete tasks that they have never been asked to complete before. [14:09] - Another domain that is typically assessed is Academic Achievement in the areas of Reading, Writing, and Math. [15:35] - When assessing academics, Dr. Wilson explains that some tasks will be timed and others will be untimed which helps determine an appropriate intervention or accommodation. [16:21] - Another domain that's assessed is Attention and Concentration which can greatly interfere with learning processes. [17:15] - Can the child pull information from memory? Does the child have a stronger visual memory than verbal memory? [18:39] - Another process that is looked at is Executive Functioning which is an umbrella term that includes organization, planning, and an individual's ability to work towards a goal. [19:19] - Language Functioning includes expressive language and receptive language. How do they express themselves? How do they understand others? [20:14] - The evaluation also looks at Visual Spatial and Visual Motor Functioning which helps us understand how the child perceives information that he or she sees. [21:23] - Something important to keep in mind is that children and adolescents are social beings. They will often have an emotional response to their struggles. [23:15] - In parent and teacher questionnaires, there will be questions about stomachaches and headaches to determine if there is a pattern. [23:50] - Behaviors such as defiance or breaking rules are also looked at as these could co-exist with the learning difficulty or a way for the child to cover up the struggle. [24:45] - Media use will be asked about which could be affecting sleep, attention, and has a connection with depression. [26:46] - Exercise is also looked at as it can enhance mental health and brain growth. Is there a connection between the child's amount of exercise and their challenges? [27:18] - Once all of this information is gathered, Dr. Wilson can use it to determine if there is a disorder, what the disorder is, and can then develop an appropriate intervention. [28:51] - The information from this assessment also helps a parent or educator be more patient and gives them guidance on how to help them. [30:23] - An assessment is only the first step. It determines the reason for the struggle and once we have that information and gives us a roadmap to help the child to overcome their struggles so that they can thrive.
