Jesus invites all to come to him, to follow him, and to abide in him. He says Come and be Saved! Follow and be Saved! Abide and be Saved! We Come to Him to be Received, we Follow Him to be Remade, and we Abide in Him to be Resourced, For, only as we abide in Him do we truly receive everything needed to bear fruit for the glory of God, and everything required to live real life! Why is it then, that we sometimes seem to be under such a heavy yoke and such a difficult load? What gets us out from under Jesus' yoke and back trying to pull our own? In other words...What are the unnecessary burdens which we find ourselves bearing, and to which Jesus offers us this exchange?

Brass locomotives are dead. There's no point in buying them. They're a bad investment. In fact, we couldn't understand why anybody would even want to buy and sell them until we met Matt Dowd at Resourced Rail's. Not only is Matt an avid Model Railroader but he's been an avid collector and trader of brass locomotives in all scales for decades, and now he's turned it into a full-time business. We decided to have a return visit to find out how this fledgling company turned into a full-time job for Matt who now employs seven people to help him keep up with demand. Plus he tells us all about his exciting trip to the “Land of the Rising Sun” and what model railroading is like in Japan as he introduces us to some of the great brass locomotive builders of our time. It's a great episode and one we're all sure you'll enjoy!!

If you needed any further evidence that our criminal justice system is out-of-whack, we've got it today. And if you thought the bail system was tickety-boo and doing what it should to keep you and I safe, you might want to think again. That's because a report which has just been released under the Official Information Act paints a very different picture of the bail system that I'm guessing you imagine operating here in New Zealand. It certainly paints a very different picture, as far as I'm concerned. The overarching message that comes through in this report is that, a lot of the time, when it comes to doing checks on people on bail, the police focus on the wrong ones. They tend to focus on low-risk offenders because it's easier to deal with them than high-risk offenders. But also because they don't really know who is high risk and who isn't. The Bail Project Management Report - that's what this report is called - has been obtained by media. And it says just 0.4 percent of offenders are flagged as being high-risk. That's not because only 0.4 percent are actually high risk. It's because the IT systems the Police use aren't up-to-scratch and are failing. Meaning police don't actually know how many are high risk. For example, the report says that when the police rely on its automated systems - 0.4 percent of offenders are deemed high-risk. But when they go through the list of people on bail themselves and flag people they consider to be high-risk, the stat goes from 0.4 percent to 13 percent. Which says, doesn't it, that the automated system vastly underestimates the number of high-risk offenders on bail. Which means that, a lot of the time, we have the police doing more bail checks on people who don't really need a lot of supervision - and they're not getting around to check on the more high-risk people, the ones they really should be keeping a close eye on. Here's a quote from the report itself: "Current bail checks tend to focus on quantity over quality. For example checking bailees that are convenient to check rather than high priority". “Convenient to check, rather than high priority”. How about that? That's the state of the bail system in this country. The report also says "there is no clear policy or guidance on how to conduct a reasonable bail check”. And what that means is things tend to vary from police district to police district. There's also very little oversight to ensure that, when police do a bail check, they're complying with policy and best practise. Now a major part of the problem is the huge increase there's been in the number of offenders on electronically-monitored bail. And that's expected to increase by another 35 percent over the next 18 months. The total number of people on bail has dropped. But the number on electronic bail has gone through the roof. And the cops just don't have the systems to cope. Another interesting fact from this report: offenders on electronically-monitored bail are eight-times more likely to breach their conditions than an offender on home detention. Now I don't know about you. But I have never heard any politician say this election campaign that they want to throw more money into police IT systems. They're all banging on about more cops on the beat. But none of them have said anything about the bail system and, more to the point, none of them have told us exactly how bad the bail system is. And how poorly-resourced it is. But we know now. Thanks to this report. Which says the bail system is failing us. And we deserve much better protection from dangerous criminals. So, if we don't have the systems to provide a safe bail system, then we need more people behind bars, don't we? LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The modern working environment is defined by endless to-do lists, tight deadlines, and the expectation to do more with less. As employees struggle to manage the job responsibilities of 2 or 3 people, exhaustion happens first. Long working hours, with little to no downtime, lead to mental and physical fatigue. Working like this is harmful and not sustainable, but many of us keep going because of the fear of judgment, rejection, or missing out on a promotion. In this episode, I explore the steps that employees can take to prevent burnout and improve their overall experience at work.
This week's episode is just delightful. Meet Leah Black, currently leading the development of the new Regenerative Futures Fund for Edinburgh, and Shasta Hanif Ali is a writer, poet and anti-racism campaigner who works on racial equity and racial justice at Corra Foundation. I have to say that Shasta's time travellers' reflections from 2030 were possibly the most beautiful we've yet heard on 'From What If to What Next'. You are in for such a treat, some real possibility-stretching reflections on how the world of philanthropy needs to adapt to the times we're in. I hope you love this conversation, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Language is always evolving and we need to evolve with it. Reflecting on the words we're using and recognizing opportunities to grow and change is a natural (and necessary) part of our anti-racist journeys. It means breaking down and unlearning things that we thought in the past, but the result is language that better aligns with our intent. So this week we're taking a look at the term “under-resourced” and discussing why we need to switch it out for something new. If you've been around for a while, you've already heard me talk about how I changed from using “low-income” to “under-resourced,” but I've learned recently that “under-resourced” may not be the most accurate term after all. In this episode, I share: • Why I'm now choosing to say “historically exploited communities” or “systemically exploited communities” instead of “under-resourced.” • More about what it is that causes words and meanings to change. • The journey I take, the feelings I feel, and the questions I ask myself when I'm considering how my language should change to reflect my anti-racist journey. The Becoming Podcast has been on a short hiatus while I focus on writing my book, but oh what a comeback episode I have for you! This month, I spoke to Toko-pa Turner, who many of you may know as the unofficial patron saint of many of my circles and gatherings because of the sheer number of times I've quoted from the wisdom of her book, Belonging. Toko-pa is a Canadian author, teacher, and dreamworker. Blending the mystical teachings of Sufism in which she was raised with a Jungian approach to dreams, she founded The Dream School in 2001, from which thousands of students have graduated. She is the author of the award-winning book, Belonging: Remembering Ourselves Home, which explores the themes of exile and belonging through the lens of dreams, mythology, and nature. This book has resonated for readers worldwide, and has been translated into 10 different languages so far. Her work focuses on the relationship between psyche and nature, and how to follow our inner wisdom to meet with the social, psychological, and ecological challenges of our time. Here's some of what Toko-pa and I talk about in this episode: > The dream that changed Toko-pa's life, causing her to question her career and, ultimately, her identity > How we can court our dreams to support us during times of radical transformation – and the reasons so many of us have a hard time remembering and working with what shows up in our dreamscape > Toko-pa's perspective on the message of Belonging after the divisiveness our society has experienced in the years since it was published > What happened for both Toko-pa and I when we fell out of belonging from the ideologies of the "wellness world" > How to build community when you're under-resourced > "The Big Lie" when it comes to belonging, and how we can reclaim a sense of belonging to the greater family of things, as Mary Oliver so famously wrote
When designer Amahlia Stevens launched Vitamin A Swimwear in 2000, she was ahead of the curve. Along with championing body positivity by introducing the concept of bikini separates that can be mixed and matched, she prioritized sustainable, local production after getting a crash course on Patagonia's processes through her work with the brand. Today, California-based Vitamin A sells 50% direct to consumer and 50% through its 200 wholesale channels, which include Holt Renfrew and Revolve. Announced on Wednesday, Vitamin A was just acquired by Swim USA, a family-owned company that also counts Miraclesuit and Amoressa in its portfolio — its licensed brands include Polo Ralph Lauren and Reebok. On the podcast, Stevens shares why the deal made sense for Vitamin A and how it will work to grow the "under-resourced" brand. She hinted that branded stores, international expansion and product collaborations are around the corner under the new ownership.

If someone asks you to go to dinner, what is your response? Sure. I will go if I can pick the restaurant. Sure. I will go and I will go to the restaurant you pick. Sure. I have no opinion on where we go. But I will complain if it isn't what I secretly wanted. Sure. We can go to the restaurant you pick this time and my choice next time. Each of these responses represent a Communication Style. Do you know your Communication Style? Listen as Joseph and Paula address the 4 Styles to determine which you most frequently use. Fire Fighters on duty during the Auckland floods struggled with inadequate gear and vehicles and feel they were left in the dark by senior leaders. That's according to the results of a survey by the Professional Firefghters union. Auckland mayor Wayne Brown has ordered an independent review of the emergency response to the floods on January 27, but findings have been delayed until mid-March. A state of emergency was not signed off until about 9:30pm on the Friday and not announced publicly for another half hour. Martin Campbell is the Union's Secretary for the Northern Branch & Auckland Local. He talks to Lisa Owen.
As churches struggle with shrinking attendance and resources, many leaders feel overwhelmed and under-resourced. But what if the problem isn't a lack of resources, but rather an overabundance of them? In this episode of the leadership podcast, I'm joined by Mitch from Crown Jesus Ministries for a though-provoking conversation that challenges the common belief that more resources equal more success in ministry. Our discussion explores how small groups and simple, authentic relationships can be more effective in growing the church than a never-ending stream of programs and courses. Listen in as we explore the example of Jesus and his approach to mentoring and leadership, and discover how you can lead your ministry with less and achieve more. It's time to shift our mindset from scarcity to abundance, and embrace the power of simplicity and relationship in leading under-resourced ministries.
My healing journey has been ongoing for four years, ever since my original 'symptoms' of depression and anxiety postpartum awakened me to it. Ever since, I have been returning to the natural state of who I really am. It is a journey that is really starting to bear fruit, and in today's show I want to share some of those successes and breakthroughs with you. My hope is that my personal journey inspires you, and allows you to consider any gaps in your personal sense of being held and supported in your motherhood and postpartum right now. If you need more support, my 12 week program and lifetime community is just that. Enrollment for Postpartum Freedom, my 12-week program and community for postpartum moms, ends March 1, 2023. How do you instill a sense of resilience in students that allows them to look at adversity as a challenge and failure as a learning opportunity? You teach them entrepreneurship! On Tuesday, November 29, 2022, we celebrated National Entrepreneurship Month and Giving Tuesday by amplifying one of my favorite nonprofit organizations: BUILD.BUILD utilizes entrepreneurship education to help students develop ownership and agency over their own academic and career success, while addressing racial equity and career opportunity gaps by giving under-resourced youth the building blocks to fast track their future and become the CEOs of their own lives. The BUILD partners and volunteers play a key role in helping their students launch micro-enterprises, succeed in high school, and build a network of supportive adults committed to opening doors for them in the future. As many founders know, developing an entrepreneurial mindset helps students develop the capability to envision a future that's filled with possibility. When kids graduate from BUILD's programs, they have a plan and a vision for their future! Please join me in supporting this impactful organization! You will love meeting BUILDS's phenomenal President, Thais Rezende; a former student sharing his journey – Tony Shavers, III; and you'll hear from educators, students, mentors and fundraisers, all adding their delicious wind to this wonderful organization. To add wind to BUILD's sails with a donation - especially a sustainable, monthly donation - please tap this link: https://bit.ly/BUILDGivingTuesday2022Follow BUILD on social via these platforms:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/buildInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/buildorg/Twitter: https://twitter.com/BUILDNationalFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/BUILD.orgYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/build1600Thank you for carving out time to learn about BUILD and add wind to their sails - cheers!Ande ♥https://andelyons.com#bestyoutubechannelforstartups #startupstories #startuplife #youthentrepreneurship JOIN STARTUP LIFE LIVE MEETUP GROUPGet an alert whenever I post a new show!https://bit.ly/StartupLifeLIVECONNECT WITH ME ONLINE: https://twitter.com/AndeLyonshttps://www.linkedin.com/in/andelyons/ https://www.instagram.com/ande_lyons/ TikTok: @andelyonsANDELICIOUS ANNOUNCEMENTSArlan's Academy: https://arlansacademy.com/Scroobious - use Ande15 discount code: https://www.scroobious.com/How to Raise a Seed Round: https://bit.ly/AAElizabethYinTune in to Mia Voss' Shit We Don't Talk About podcast here: https://shitwedonttalkaboutpodcast.com/SPONSORSHIPIf you resonate with the show's mission of amplifying diverse founder voices while serving first-time founders around the world, please reach out to me to learn more about making an impact through sponsoring the Startup Life LIVE Show! ande@andelyons.com.
