Andrew Gillum goes LIVE with Gen Z organizer Deyona Burton who shares her insight into how self-care and activism go hand in hand. Burton first made waves in 2020 when she led the effort to change the name of her Florida highschool from “Robert E. Lee” to “Riverside” High. Then, while attending FSU, Deyona Burton rose to national prominence as the Director of Programs for College Democrats of America. Her accolades include being honored at the White House, an impactful TEDx talk, earning the President’s Volunteer Service Award, and being named the 2024 National Action Network’s MLK Youth Honoree. Having contributed to campaigns and worked within offices at local, state, and national levels, Deyona now continues her mission to drive change from Washington, D.C. Democratic politics are orbiting the city of Chicago Monday as the party begins its national convention. Many of Minnesota's Democratic leaders are there, along with delegates, political heavyweights and protesters from across the nation.Vice President Kamala Harris has already secured the presidential nomination with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her VP. So, the event is a chance to build momentum and share more details on how they'd run the country. For the latest in our series State of Democra-Z, we check in with two of our young political panelists to find out what they think of the Democratic ticket. Cori Stockard is an incoming senior at the University of Minnesota and president of the College Democrats. Maddie Christensen is a recent graduate of Hamline University, where she was also a leader of the College Dems.

Vice President Kamala Harris' first election ad came out Thursday, but it's internet-made videos that are taking social media by storm. Harris' sudden rise as a favorite for the Democratic nomination came just in time for the explosion of Charli XCX's summer album, “brat.” And at least for now, the memes have allowed the Harris campaign to capture the attention of young, online voters. We've been curious to hear what our Gen-Z voter panel is thinking about all of this. So for the series, State of Democra-Z, we called up Cori Stockard and Maddie Christensen. Cori is an incoming senior at the University of Minnesota and president of the College Democrats. And Maddie Christensen recently graduated from Hamline University, where she had also been a leader with the College Dems.

President Joe Biden gathered with his family at Camp David over the weekend to regroup after a debate that many viewed as disastrous for his reelection campaign. He showed more energy at a North Carolina rally as his campaign pushed back against calls by some Democrats to drop out. Support for Biden has faltered among parts of the coalition that elected him in 2020—including young voters. In one survey covered by NPR, only a third of voters ages 18 to 26 supported Biden and another third supported former President Donald Trump. The rest preferred third-party candidates. For our series State of Democra-Z, we've been talking to a group of young voters who work in politics. Cori Stockard is an incoming senior at the University of Minnesota and president of the College Democrats, and Cory Hallada is an incoming senior at St. Olaf who has interned with former president Trump's campaign. The two Gen-Z voters joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer to share what they took away from the debate.

Here's what we know when it comes to the antiwar protests on college campuses and electoral politics: President Biden does seem to have a problem with young activists on the left. The disapproval only intensified in the days after the president spoke critically about the protests. But whether or not he has a larger problem with young voters in general remains to be seen. Which is why one statement from a more mainstream group, saying the administration is on a “mistaken route,” is worth considering. That group? The College Democrats of America. That's an organization that is closely aligned with national party leadership, and the leaders of the group are delegates to the Democratic National Convention. Which means, they're the young people who would seem most likely to support Mr. Biden. So over the past few days, we reached out to a bunch of leaders within the College Democrats to get the inside story of how that statement came to be — and to understand what it might mean for November.

Over the past couple weeks, protests at universities here in Minnesota and around the country have dominated headlines. Students who are involved want their institutions to cut financial ties to Israel or meet other demands related to bringing an end to the Israel-Hamas war and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Both candidates for President have spoken out about the protests. President Joe Biden said in remarks that he values free speech but said "dissent must never lead to disorder." Former President Donald Trump praised the police response in New York. For more on the political importance of the protests and other top issues, MPR News Host Cathy Wurzer turned to two young voters who follow politics closely. Maddie Christensen is a former leader of the College Democrats chapter at Hamline University in St. Paul. And Ruth Hailey is president of the College Republicans at St. Olaf in Northfield.

Ralph welcomes back medical journalist and New York Times bestselling author, Jean Carper, to elaborate on her latest book, “100 LIFE OR DEATH FOODS: A Scientific Guide to Which Foods Prolong Life or Kill You Prematurely.” Plus, the latest news about Boeing and the UAW.Jean Carper is a medical journalist, and wrote “EatSmart” (a popular weekly column on nutrition, every week for USA Weekend Magazine)  from 1994 until 2008; she is still a contributing editor, writing health and nutrition articles. Ms. Carper is also a former CNN medical correspondent and director of the documentary Monster in the Mind. She is the best-selling author of 25 books, mostly on nutrition and health. Her latest book is 100 LIFE OR DEATH FOODS: A Scientific Guide to Which Foods Prolong Life or Kill You Prematurely. The reason I wrote the book was that I knew there is no other book like this. Nobody has taken a scientific look at all the studies that are being done on specific foods with conclusions as to how they are going to affect longevity. It is a totally new field. It really only started several years ago where scientists are getting interested in this. I thought of all the things that would be the most interesting about a food, and whether or not you wanted to eat it would be, “Oh, how long does it prolong my life? Or on the other hand, is it likely to shorten my life?”Jean CarperLess-developed countries with their natural food from over the history of their cultures are very often far superior [in longevity studies] to the so-called corporatized Western diet.Ralph NaderIn Case You Haven't Heard with Francesco DeSantis1. The International Criminal Court at the Hague is preparing to hand down indictments to Israeli officials for committing war crimes. The Guardian reports the indicted are expected to include authoritarian Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, among others. These indictments will likely focus on Netanyahu's strategy of intentional starvation in Gaza. Yet, lest one think that the United States actually believes in the “rules based international order,” they have touted so frequently, the Biden administration will not allow these indictments to be effectuated, baselessly claiming that the ICC does not have jurisdiction in Israel. Democracy Now! reports State Department spokesman Vedant Patel told the press “Since this president has come into office, we have worked to reset our relationship with the ICC, and we are in contact with the court on a range of issues, including in connection to the court's important work on Darfur, on Ukraine, on Sudan, as well. But on this investigation, our position is clear: We continue to believe that the ICC does not have jurisdiction over the Palestinian situation.” Former Human Rights Watch Executive Director Kenneth Roth – who has faced retribution for his past criticism of Israel – called this “the height of hypocrisy.”2. Even as the United States shields Israel from international legal consequences for its crimes, an internal state department memo indicates the American diplomatic corps is increasingly skeptical of the pariah state. Reuters reports “senior U.S. officials have advised Secretary of State Antony Blinken that they do not find ‘credible or reliable' Israel's assurances that it is using U.S.-supplied weapons in accordance with international humanitarian law.” This memo includes “eight examples of Israeli military actions that the officials said raise "serious questions" about potential violations of international humanitarian law…[including]  repeatedly striking protected sites and civilian infrastructure; "unconscionably high levels of civilian harm to military advantage"; taking little action to investigate violations or to hold to account those responsible for significant civilian harm and "killing humanitarian workers and journalists at an unprecedented rate."” The State Department however will only release a “complete assessment of credibility” in its May 8th report to Congress.3. On Tuesday, the Guardian reports, an army of NYPD officers – including hundreds of armed officers in riot gear and heavy vehicles such as police busses, MRAPs, and “the Bear,” a ladder truck used to breach upper story windows – stormed the campus of Columbia University and carried out mass arrests at the college's Hamilton Hall – which had been non-violently occupied by students and renamed Hind's Hall after Hind Rajab, a six-year old Palestinian girl murdered by the IDF. Hamilton Hall was among the buildings occupied by anti-Vietnam War Protesters during the Columbia Uprising of 1968. Mayor Eric Adams used as a pretext for this militarized police action a claim that the student protest had been “co-opted” by “outside agitators”; there has been no evidence presented to support this claim. The NYPD also threatened to arrest student journalists, and the Columbia Journalism School Dean Jelani Cobb, per Samantha Gross of the Boston Globe, and videos show the cops arresting legal observers and medics. Columbia University President, the Anglo-Egyptian Baroness Minouche Shafik, has requested that the NYPD continue to occupy the Morningside Heights campus until May 17th.4. At the University of California Los Angeles, the New York Times reports “U.C.L.A. asked for officers after a clash between pro-Palestinian demonstrators and counterprotesters grew heated overnight.” This misleading report fails to clarify that, as Alejandra Caraballo of Harvard Law puts it “the police stood aside and let a pro Israeli lynch mob run wild at UCLA. They did nothing for two hours as violent Zionists assaulted students, launched fireworks into the encampment, and sprayed mace on students.” The accompanying videos must be seen to be believed. This is yet another glaring example of media manipulation on behalf of Zionist aggression against non-violent student protesters.5. In the nation's capital, a peaceful pro-Palestine encampment at the George Washington University continues to hold in the face of increasing pressure. The Washington Post reports that the university requested the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department to clear the encampment last week, but the cops demurred. The Post article cites an unnamed D.C. official who “said they had flashbacks to June 2020, when images of mostly peaceful protesters being forcefully shoved out of Lafayette Square by U.S. Park Police officers with batons and chemical irritants made national news.” The university has issued temporary suspensions and did attempt to clear the encampment over the weekend, but failed to do so. Now however, congressional Republicans are heaping pressure upon the university and District of Columbia Mayor Bowser. According to the GW Hatchet, “[Representatives] Virginia Foxx and James Comer — who chair the House Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Oversight and Accountability, respectively — wrote [in letter to Bowser and MPD Chief Pamela Smith] that they were “alarmed” by the Metropolitan Police Department's reported refusal to clear the encampment.” and threatened to take legislative action. Senator Tom Cotton, infamous for his New York Times op-ed calling for the deployment of the national guard to shut down Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, sent a letter to Bowser on Tuesday, writing “Whether it is due to incompetence or sympathy for the cause of these Hamas supporters, you are failing to protect the rights of law-abiding citizens by letting a terrorist-supporting mob take over a large area of a university…Your actions are a good reminder of why Washington, D.C. must never become a state.” So far, the District's leadership has exercised a rare and commendable restraint. One can only hope that continues.6. Looking beyond individual campuses, the Appeal reports over 1,400 students and staff have been arrested at “protest encampments or…sit-ins on more than 70 college campuses across 32 states during the past month.”  This piece followed up on these arrests by contacting prosecutors and city attorneys' offices in every one of these jurisdictions – and found that “only two offices said they would not charge people for peacefully protesting.” These were “ Sam Bregman, the prosecutor for Bernalillo County, New Mexico, [which] includes the University of New Mexico's Albuquerque campus….[and] Matthew Van Houten, the prosecutor overseeing Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.” Incredibly, this piece was published even before the recent mass arrests at Columbia and the City College of New York, which are estimated at nearly 300, per CNN.7. Bringing the civil war within the Democratic Party on this issue into full view, the College Democrats of America – the official student outreach arm of the DNC – has issued a statement commending the “heroic actions on the part of students...for an end to the war in Palestine…[and] for an immediate permanent ceasefire.” This statement goes on to say “Arresting, suspending, and evicting students without any due process is not only legally dubious but morally reprehensible,”  and excoriates the White House for taking “the mistaken route of a bear hug strategy for Netanyahu and a cold shoulder strategy for its own base,” noting that “Each day that Democrats fail to stand united for a permanent ceasefire…more and more youth find themselves disillusioned with the party.”8. Moving beyond Palestine, hard as that is, the American Prospect is out with a chilling new story on Boeing. This report documents how the late Boeing whistle-blower John “Swampy” Barnett – who died under deeply mysterious circumstances during his deposition against the aviation titan last month – was ignored, mocked, and harassed by his corporate overlords. When he tried to raise the alarm that Boeing's practices could be in violation of Section 38 of the United States Criminal code “The whole room…burst out laughing.” When he found planes riddled with defective and nonconforming parts and tried to report it, a supervisor emphatically declared “We're not going to report anything to the FAA.” Yet even more than Boeing's rancid corporate culture, this piece takes aim and corporate criminal law – specifically the Y2K era AIR 21 law which “effectively immunizes airplane manufacturers…from suffering any legal repercussions from the testimony of their own workers.” Per this law, “the exclusive legal remedy available to aviation industry whistleblowers who suffer retaliation for reporting safety violations involves filing a complaint within 90 days of the first instance of alleged retaliation with a secret court administered by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration that lacks subpoena power, takes five years or longer to rule in many cases, and rules against whistleblowers an astounding 97 percent of the time, according to the Government Accountability Project.” No wonder Boeing acts as though they are above the law.9. The United Auto Workers union continues to rack up victories. On Tuesday, More Perfect Union reported “ Mercedes-Benz has abruptly replaced its U.S. CEO in an effort to undercut the union drive at Mercedes's plant in Alabama…In a video shown to workers…new CEO Federico Kochlowski admits that ‘many of you' want change and [promised] improvements.” As Jonah Furman, Communications Director for UAW, notes “Mercedes workers have already:-- killed two-tier wages-- gotten their UAW pay bump-- [and] fired their bossand they haven't even voted yet!If that's what you get for just *talking* union, imagine what you can win when you *join* the union.”Moreover, UAW President Shawn Fain issued a statement decrying the mass arrests of anti-war protesters, writing “The UAW will never support the...intimidation of those exercising their right to protest, strike, or speak out against injustice…This war is wrong, and this response against students and academic workers, many of them UAW members, is wrong…if you can't take the outcry, stop supporting this war.”10. Finally, the New York Daily News's Chris Sommerfledt reports “[New York City's] largest cop union [the Police Benevolent Association] is suing Police Commissioner Ed Caban and Mayor Adams for implementing a new “zero tolerance” policy on NYPD officers using steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs.” The fact that the PBA is suing this ardently pro-cop mayoral administration is alarming enough, but the fact that enough NYPD officers are using steroids to warrant this policy – and enough for the union to step in on their behalf – raises an even more alarming question: how many roid-rage fueled NYPD cops are terrorizing marginalized people on the streets of New York City? Perhaps this could explain some of the NYPD's outrageous, disproportionately violent behavior in recent years. This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard. Regardless of whether someone agrees with the policy positions of the Republican Party (of which, frankly, it's difficult to ascertain), you have to ask yourself, in this election, when you cast your vote, if you can support a Party that poses such a threat to your country. And, I mean this, today's Republican Party is an existential threat to the United States and its people. This is a party that advocates overthrowing the government, that openly states that America is not a democracy and actively takes measures to strip democratic governance from our society, and targets traditionally underreppresented groups for, not just derision, but violence – queer folks, folks of color, women, immigrants. The polls are all over the place, but a few things suggest that Republicans may be in good shape to take Congress. First, history tells us that the president's party loses seats in the first midterm after taking office. Additionally, the economy is lagging – with high gas prices, high inflation, slowing home sales. While this is all related to external factors outside the direct control of president (and here I'm talking about Putin's war in Ukraine driving up the prices of food, oil, and gas; remnants of the botched response to the pandemic that is still dragging on the economy), people still hold the party in power accountable. So, this suggests that Republicans should do well. But, this is muddied by a few things this year – one, Republicans have chosen a uniquely awful – unqualified, Mega MAGA, conspiracy-driven slate of candidates up, down, and across tickets nationwide; two, the overturning of Roe v. Wade animated people against Republicans and their anti-choice agenda in a way that a court opinion hasn't done in recent memory; and three, polls have been really poor at gauging voter intent when anything related to Donald Trump is involved. So, first I make a closing argument, not just for for Democrats, but for democracy and the United States, and also against political violence that is becoming a hallmark of the Republican Party. And, I'm also talking to Natalie Kenoyer – president of the College Democrats of Washington about what she's hearing from the people she's engaging – college Democrats AND folks she's working to convince to turn out for Democrats. And we talk about what issues seem to matter to voters on the ground, the threat that Republicans pose to the country, how she and her friends think about going to red states after Roe was overturned, what a Republican win this year might mean for the future of the country and, especially, her generation, how young Democrats feel about an aging Democratic leadership, and how people can register and vote in Washington state. Rep. Jim Banks was one of nearly a dozen members of the House Republican Study Committee who met Trump, 76, just a day after the shocking raid on his Florida estate. “He didn’t seem defeated in the least bit — he was very fired up, very upbeat,” Banks told Fox News of the ” great three-hour-long” chat at Trump’s New Jersey golf club, Bedminister. “He said we are going to like his decision and it is only a matter of time before he will make that decision known,” Banks told Fox News of Trump, who hours earlier released a campaign-style video promising that “the best is yet to come.” https://www.theepochtimes.com/trump-suggests-fbi-may-have-planted-evidence-during-mar-a-lago-raid_4655282.html?utm_source=partner&utm_campaign=BonginoReport Since we’re already talking about Trump, how about this: Trump Suggests FBI May Have ‘Planted’ Evidence During Mar-a-Lago Raid Former President Donald Trump suggested the FBI may have planted evidence during the bureau’s raid at his Mar-a-Lago home because members of his team were blocked from watching the agents. In a Truth Social post on Wednesday, the former president wrote that “the FBI and others from the Federal Government would not let anyone, including my lawyers, be anywhere near the areas that were rummaged and otherwise looked at during the raid on Mar-a-Lago.” “Everyone was asked to leave the premises, they wanted to be left alone, without any witnesses to see what they were doing, taking or, hopefully not, ‘planting.’ Why did they STRONGLY insist on having nobody watching them, everybody out?” said Trump. FBI agents spent about 10 hours scouring his private office on Monday and broke into his safe, according to Trump and members of his family. Bruce Reinhart, a Florida federal magistrate judge, signed off on a warrant to search the former president’s Florida property. Reinhart worked as a federal prosecutor until 2008 when he became a defense attorney representing employees of convicted sex trafficker and wealthy financier Jeffrey Epstein. Employees included Epstein’s pilots, a scheduler, and others. The Epoch Times contacted the FBI for comment. Neither the bureau nor Attorney General Merrick Garland have offered public comments about the raid, drawing even questions and condemnation from Democrat politicians. Hey, speaking of those Jan. 6th hearings… https://www.newsmax.com/newsfront/jan-6-hearings-public/2022/08/09/id/1082365/ Monmouth Poll: Jan. 6 Hearings Having Little Impact on Public The House Jan. 6 Select Committee hearings have done little to change people's opinions surrounding the 2021 Capitol attack, a new poll found. Regarding former President Donald Trump's culpability in the assault and claims of election fraud, public opinion stands pretty much as it was before testimony of former presidential aides during the last three public hearings, the latest Monmouth University poll found. Not only that, Trump's favorability rating is nearly identical to where it was immediately after the 2020 election. Also, 4 in 10 Americans would lean toward backing a comeback bid in 2024, according to the Monmouth Poll. Overall, just 8% of Americans said the hearings have changed their minds about the Capitol incident — basically unchanged from 6% who said the same in June. "When we released our June poll, I said the committee was preaching to the choir. These current results suggest they haven't recruited any new singers since then," said Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute. The survey found that 38% of respondents believe Trump was responsible directly for what happened on Jan. 6. That number stood at 42% right before the testimony of former Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson. "The sensational revelations during the hearings do not seem to have moved the public opinion needle on Trump's culpability for either the riot or his spurious election fraud claims," Murray said. Only 41% — including 73% of Democrats — favor charging Trump with crimes related to his involvement on Jan. 6. A total of 34% — including 66% of Republicans — were opposed, and another 25% were unsure. A majority (61%) of Americans have at least a little trust the House committee is conducting a fair investigation, but there's a huge difference between Democrats (91%) and Republicans (35%). Just weeks later, on July 28, the prestigious school's College Democrats chapter revealed it ousted Cocchiarella from the club "in late October 2021, following campus-wide allegations of sexual assault." Those allegations emerged publicly in a string of December 2021 Reddit posts, which accused Cocchiarella of using "his Twitter notoriety and left-wing credentials to position himself as an ally. Then, once people let their guards down, he rapes them." Crist, who did not return repeated requests for comment, has remained silent on the accusations facing his campaign aide. By his own logic, that silence means he endorses Cocchiarella's alleged behavior—in a June 29 tweet, Crist pressed DeSantis to condemn the January 6 riots, writing, "Is it just me, or do you agree that his silence = endorsement?" Crist is not the only prominent Democrat to hire Cocchiarella following the troubling allegations. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's (R., Ga.) Democratic opponent, Marcus Flowers, has paid Cocchiarella's firm more than $40,000 since October 2021, when the activist announced his "new role" as Flowers's digital director. Flowers has his own alleged issues with women. In July 2016, the Democrat attempted to dump his ex-wife—Russian national Svetlana Chudinova—at a local homeless shelter, court documents reported by the New Republic show. Flowers did not dispute the incident and instead defended his attempt to offload Chudinova, saying he "felt she had a personality disorder that was not previously disclosed." In turn, Chudinova accused Flowers of threatening to strike her. Cocchiarella, whose Twitter account boasts more than 250,000 followers and includes a photo of the activist smiling alongside President Joe Biden, enrolled as a Dartmouth freshman during the 2021-22 school year. While it's unclear what specific "digital consulting" services he provided Crist, Cocchiarella publicly endorsed the former governor over fellow DeSantis challenger Nikki Fried (D.) just days after Crist's campaign paid him. Flowers, meanwhile, routinely replies to Cocchiarella's tweets to solicit campaign contributions. In October 2021, he called the young activist "an outstanding young man." In addition to his work with Crist and Flowers, Cocchiarella has collaborated with the Lincoln Project, an anti-Republican super PAC founded by disgraced sexual predator John Weaver. Cocchiarella during an Aug. 1 podcast appearance did, however, confirm his decision to transfer from Dartmouth to fellow Ivy League school Columbia. The activist did not discuss why he opted to leave Dartmouth after just one year at the college and is yet to publicly address the allegations leveled against him. Cocchiarella, Dartmouth College Democrats, and Dartmouth's Title IX office did not return requests for comment. Well isn’t that just nice? https://cbs6albany.com/news/local/legislation-to-change-the-term-inmate-for-those-in-the-prison-system Let’s shift our eyes back to the North East: Gov. Hochul signs legislation changing the term "inmate" for those in the prison system The word "inmate" is out in New York State Law, and that decision is getting a lot of attention. A top political analyst told me Tuesday that Governor Hochul's decision to substitute the term "incarcerated individuals" for inmates in state law is her way of trying to reconcile issues of justice with issues of safety. But Dr. Lee Miringoff says it's a delicate balancing act when her opponent Lee Zeldin is accusing her of not being tough enough on crime. Hochul's critics say she is once again putting the needs of the criminal ahead of the needs of the victim, while those who approve of the change say it gives the prison population a better chance at reintegrating into society. Melanie Trimble of the New York Civil Liberties Union says you can attribute the rise in crime--if there is one--to many factors, like the pandemic and an increase in gun sales. She says the language change helps to dignify--and humanize--people who have done their time. Dr. Miringoff of Marist College says the Governor has already chosen a clear path on the issue of crime by not bringing the legislature back to deal with bail reform, and he believes she's banking on this language change helping her with her base in November. Trimble argues that using inclusive language that makes those returning to society after a stint in prison feel comfortable is not a heavy lift, and one that will make a real difference in peoples lives. She said, "You know, we love to label people, and this is a community that is extremely vulnerable. We need to provide them with as many possibilities and hopeful futures as possible." Let’s shift things to the topic that I love… sports! Let’s talk Baseball today: https://www.boundingintosports.com/2022/08/after-abandoning-their-heritage-and-name-the-cleveland-guardians-attendance-tanks/ This is for you Mark Dewey: After Abandoning Their Heritage And Name, The Cleveland Guardians’ Attendance Tanks Last year, in an attempt to appease woke liberals, the Cleveland Indians changed their name to the Cleveland Guardians after previously announcing their intent to drop the Indians name in 2020. The team released a statement announcing their decision, “The Cleveland Indians today announced our decision to begin the process of changing from our team name ‘Indians.'” “Since July, we have conducted an extensive process to learn how our team name affected different constituencies and whether it aligned with our organizational values,” the organization explained. “As a result of that process, we have decided to move forward with changing the current team name and determining a new, non-Native American based name for the franchise.” They further detailed, “In our statement in June 2020, we acknowledged the importance of taking a leadership role in diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts across the community and enhancing our support for underserved and under-represented groups. As part of that commitment, we heard from individuals and groups who shared a variety of views and opinions on the issue. Their efforts to bring people together have apparently failed as they’ve brought about 6,000 fewer people together per game. Average attendance has dropped to 15,636 fans a game this year according to Baseball Reference. A steep decline from their 21,465 average attendance in 2019, the most recent year not affected by Covid hysteria. Albeit attendance is up from 2021 where average attendance was only 13,758. Tv ratings have also fallen by 30 percent according to Forbes. This is not the result of fans not showing up because the team is tanking like in Oakland. Cleveland is only a game back of the division lead, right in the middle of the playoff hunt. Cleveland is a small market team that is already short on cash in comparison to bigger market teams like New York, LA, and Boston. The loss of revenue from lower ticket sales only exasperates this problem. The team attempted to satisfy the demands of a group of people, woke liberals, that don’t represent their fanbase and now they’re paying the price. The Venn diagram of people offended by their previous name and fans of the team itself may as well be two distinct circles. The Guardians are not the first team to come under attack for a politically incorrect name. In 2020 the Washington Redskins changed their name to the Washington Football Team before settling on the only slightly less generic “Washington Commanders” a year later. Washington caved in the face of immense pressure by members of the media who claimed their 80 year old name was a racist slur. Interestingly enough, the Washington Post ran a poll about the term Redskin, and found that 9 out of 10 native Americans didn’t find the term ‘Redskin’ offensive back in 2016… Huh! Not every team felt compelled to give in to the demands of the woke mob. The Chicago Blackhawks of the NHL came under similar pressure to change their Native American themed name and logo. Instead of throwing away decades of team history and tradition to switch to a soulless new moniker that their fans would have no connection to, they simply said no. Deciding instead to use the notoriety created by their use of the Blackhawk name to honor Native American culture. “We celebrate Black Hawk’s legacy by offering ongoing reverent examples of Native American culture, traditions and contributions, providing a platform for genuine dialogue with local and national Native American groups,” the team continued. “As the team’s popularity grew over the past decade, so did that platform and our work with these important organizations.” Hopefully, this latest iteration of the “get woke go broke” phenomenon will teach teams that the silent majority in America are the ones that pay their bills not the perpetually offended minority. You see how crazy our culture is? This is why we need to train our kids up on the solid rock… amd a good place to do that for your college aged kids, is NSA: New Saint Andrews: Today’s culture shifts like sand. But New Saint Andrews College is established on Christ, the immovable rock. It is a premier institution that forges evangelical leaders who don’t fear or hate the world. Guided by God’s Word, they take the world back because they’re equipped with the genius of classical liberal arts and God-honoring wisdom, thanks to a faculty dedicated to academic rigor and to God’s kingdom.Find out more, at nsa.edu/ Some news on the Desantis front: https://freebeacon.com/democrats/top-desantis-challenger-paid-thousands-to-gen-z-liberal-activist-facing-campus-wide-allegations-of-sexual-assault/ Top DeSantis Challenger Paid Thousands to Gen Z Liberal Activist Facing ‘Campus-Wide Allegations of Sexual Assault’ On July 8, Democrat Charlie Crist's gubernatorial campaign paid $2,250 to Politically Correct Strategies—a consulting company registered to Gen Z liberal activist and former Dartmouth student Jack Cocchiarella—for "digital consulting." Just weeks later, on July 28, the prestigious school's College Democrats chapter revealed it ousted Cocchiarella from the club "in late October 2021, following campus-wide allegations of sexual assault." Those allegations emerged publicly in a string of December 2021 Reddit posts, which accused Cocchiarella of using "his Twitter notoriety and left-wing credentials to position himself as an ally. UnityNow's Kimberly Kolb Eakin sits down with Jessica Carpenter, RCMO at BridgeUSA. Jessica, a 2021 graduate of Arizona State University, shares the story of her and BridgeUSA's journey to try to bring open and civil discourse to Generation Z, fighting against both the political apathy and the apprehension towards sharing views that has become all too prevalent across college campuses. Throughout their discussion, these two explore the successes and challenges experienced by BridgeUSA in its first six years, working to understand what they mean about the state of our nation. The organization's journey has not always been an easy one, from being branded both a right- and a left- wing group, to dealing with red tape from administrators, to struggling to reconcile maintaining a civil and positive atmosphere with making sure everyone feels free to share their thoughts (even if those thoughts might come across as offensive to some) - a delicate balance which the two debate. Throughout all that, though, BridgeUSA has bloomed into an organization that runs multi-hundred-student events across many of its campus chapters, capable of bringing College Democrats and College Republicans into open discussions and forums that many thought extinct. Now at the forefront of bridge-building in American politics, theirs is an encouraging and inspiring example - making this one episode you won't want to miss.

Stacked is a student-run political action committee that is devoted to expanding the political influence of the student voting bloc. Over the years, the deck has been stacked against us and we're now saying, “Let's reshuffle the cards” towards a more equitable future for each of us. Students across the country have the power to influence state and federal elections in favor of a progressive student agenda. We plan to own that power. Bios of StackedPAC Panel: Jordan Harzynski - Jordan is a sophomore at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., studying Political Communication, Business, and Public Health. Over the past three years, Jordan has focused his time and efforts to engage students in the political process. While he was at George Mason University during his freshman year, Jordan helped several campaigns leading up to the 2020 election and founded a Students for Biden-Harris group on campus. Jordan recognized the importance of youth engagement for Democratic victories and wanted to do more. He saw the power of the youth vote and wanted to find ways to continue the effort of mobilizing students. It began with the recognition that the deck was stacked against the youth of today and future generations. So Jordan founded StackedPAC to ensure students are registered and mobilized for upcoming elections and is joining fellow students in reshuffling the cards in favor of a student agenda. Prameela Bartholomeusz - Prameela is StackedPAC's Senior Advisor and CEO of Tactical Strategies LLC. She has helped to build the organization, its strategic plan and the tactical strategies that StackedPAC has been setting in place. Prameela also helps to oversee fundraising and the overall operations at StackedPAC. She has spent over 20 years in the tech industry in Finance and business operations, and her involvement in the 2008 presidential election which had her crisscrossing the country, led her to continue to stay civically engaged at the local, state and national levels and making this pivot to political consulting. Prameela has served on the 2008 DNC Platform Committee, held leadership roles in CA at the the county and state party level, helped organize for two presidential campaigns and served on the DNC National Finance Committee. Jayla Allen - Jayla is a current M.A. Candidate in African American Studies at Columbia University. She graduated from Prairie View A&M University with a degree in Political Science and Legal Studies. Throughout her undergraduate tenure, Jayla entered into the world of activism and organizing. In 2018, Jayla joined alongside the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund as a student plaintiff in Allen v. Waller, a federal voting-rights lawsuit challenging discriminatory and improper voting practices against Black student voters. Now more than ever, it is important for young people to exercise their right to vote and expand political influence in all elections; StackedPAC will galvanize students across the country and show the political power that young people hold today. Ethan Choi - Ethan is an economics major at Claremont McKenna College. He was raised in the Bay Area and is the son of two immigrants. Over the past three years, Ethan has been involved in local and state-wide activism including working as a media director under Prameela Bartholomoesuz on multiple civic causes, serving as a lead intern at the Santa Clara County Democratic Party during high school, and leading his high school's activism organization as its co-president. He recognizes that working collectively and nationally is critical to electing more leaders who will represent us. Mary Harmon - Mary attends Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, studying Special Education and American Sign Language. Entering college, she was clear she wanted to get involved in both her school and the Kalamazoo community. She gained a love for activism through the College Democrats at Western Michigan University for which she is currently president and is also active with Planned Parenthood of Kalamazoo. Mary was keen to become involved with StackedPAC due to the opportunities afforded students to focus in a more structured and effective way to advocate for issues at a campus, state and national level. She believes StackedPAC has and will make a difference in elections by both mobilizing and educating people on issues we should all care about, in a way that will bring us together.

Joe Biden won the U.S. presidential election, and we have students like Morehouse College's Rick Hart to thank. *** All eyes were on Georgia after they flipped blue for Biden/Harris in November and again as they voted in two Democratic senators, Jon Ossoff and the Rev. Raphael Warnock, in a historic runoff election earlier this month. But none of this was a sure thing. It took countless hours of local get-out-the-vote efforts by tireless volunteers like Rick Hart, a junior at Morehouse College in Atlanta, who this time last year was getting up at 5 a.m. with his friends to canvass around the state. We sat down with Rick back in November to learn about his experience with student voter engagement at Morehouse. Then, we caught up with him again in January to congratulate him on Georgia's Senate victories. Co-hosts Nan and Lisa take this opportunity to reflect on the role of HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) in U.S. history and think about college students as a voting bloc. They wrap up the show with their first edition of Office Hours, where they answer listener questions about all things college. Have a question for Office Hours? Email us at collegelandpod@gmail.com or send us a voice memo on Anchor.fm. About our guest Rick Hart is a junior majoring in political science at Morehouse College. He serves as attorney general in the Student Government Association, co-chair of Georgia Young Leaders for Biden, HBCU outreach director of College Democrats of America, and president of the Morehouse College Collegiate Chapter of National Action Network (NAN).
