Text me to ask a question, leave a comment or just say hello! Hey doc! In this episode of ✨Stethoscopes and Strollers✨, I'm challenging the popular narrative of Physician moms as “household CEOs.” Because let's be honest—most of us are actually functioning like overworked managers, not empowered leaders. And today, we're going to break that all the way down.I dive into:Why most Physician moms are functioning as managers, not CEOsWhat real CEOs like Jeff Bezos actually do with their time (hint: it's not cooking meals or doing pickups)The critical difference between true delegation and “wishful thinking” delegationHow operating like a true CEO creates space for what actually mattersKey takeaways:CEOs delegate effectively and operate at the top of their licenseTrue delegation includes training, feedback, and letting goWhen you're doing other people's jobs, burnout followsThe highest use of your time is connecting with your family and excelling in your career—not managing detailsThis is a must-listen for any Physician mom who's juggling clinical responsibilities, parenting, partnerships, and everything in between. If you're ready to stop spinning your wheels and start building a life that reflects your worth, this conversation is your permission slip. It's time for a promotion, doc. Let's transform you from an overworked manager to the visionary CEO of your life. Adam Hurrey is joined on the Adjudication Panel by Charlie Eccleshare and David Walker. On the agenda: a very appropriate Glastonbury slot for one football-adjacent artist, Sky's obsession with Arsenal's 11.2-yard wall at a Manchester United free kick, LinkedIn's latest football breakthrough, a tremendous Footballers' Names in Things from Down Under, some unacceptable self-co-commentary at 5-a-side and, finally, the answer to the question of what happens if you merge Richard Keys with Andy Gray. Meanwhile, the panel ponder the low-key football tradition of having initials printed on a tracksuit and the sweet spot for the career of a player who fathers an even more successful footballing son. In Humboldt we are not new to protecting our environment, but have you ever thought about protecting the night sky from pollution? When nighttime light spills outside of areas we want to illuminate, it becomes light pollution. Bright lights left on at night can disrupt the circadian rhythms of people as well as urban-dwelling and migrating birds, bats, and even aquatic animals, particularly in rivers, estuaries, and coastal areas. Ruskin Hartley, CEO of DarkSky International, shares how his organization is helping to ensure that light is used respectfully and responsibly around the world. One year ago this month — February 20, to be exact — the world was introduced to Dr. Sue Varma's landmark book Practical Optimism: The Art, Science, and Practice of Exceptional Well-Being. Its tagline certainly speaks to our modern times: “A practical program rooted in optimism to help you live fully and joyfully in an imperfect, turbulent world.” Yes, please! Sign me up. Sue has a fascinating story — she is a board-certified psychiatrist with a private practice in Manhattan, and was the first medical director and attending psychiatrist at the World Trade Center Mental Health Program. Through this experience, Sue worked directly with civilian and first-responder survivors in the aftermath of the attacks of September 11, 2001, and through this, she saw both devastation as well as resilience and growth. Through this experience, she asked herself how some people survived and even thrived, despite immense challenges, and how can we optimize what we have control over and block out stressors as much as possible? That was the genesis of Practical Optimism, the book we are discussing today. This book combines Sue's own personal experiences with the latest research in psychology, psychiatry, medicine, and neuroscience, and teaches us that cultivating an optimistic mindset makes all the difference — and is something that can be done by anyone, even if you're not a naturally born optimist. Sue has eight pillars to help us cultivate practical optimism, and her research shows that optimists aren't just happier, but they're also physically healthier, too. Optimism is a practice, something we can all get better at each day, and Sue's book teaches us how. If you're looking to boost your happiness, health, longevity, resilience, and success — and who among us isn't? — then today's conversation is tailor made for you. Dr. Varma is Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at New York University and teaches both medical students and residents; she's also a highly sought after and award-winning national medical contributor for major news outlets, and today we talk about topics like kintsugi — totally fascinating — as well as healthy pride, cultivating an aloneness practice, and how, in her words from the book, “It doesn't matter whether the glass is half full or half empty — it's always refillable.” So good. Practical Optimism: The Art, Science, and Practice of Exceptional Well-Being by Dr. Sue Varma

On today's cast we start our coverage of the Death Watch, the special forces of the Space Marines. We start with a quick overview of what the Death Watch are and then dive a bit into their two different founding stories (one was way better than the other). After that we talk about how a Space Marine joins the Death Watch, both the official and common practice as well as the Black Shield style. From there we focus a bit more on how the Death Watch function as a fighting force in the imperial forces, with their smaller and more specific goals and actions to achieve great success via tiny events. In this sermon Pastor Josh McPherson focuses on the metaphor of "killing dragons," representing the battle against evil and sin in both personal and cultural spheres. Josh emphasizes that confronting these metaphorical dragons—anything opposing God's truth and righteousness—is difficult but necessary. As stronger men, we must be ready, willing, and able to fight these battles. Men must take responsibility, lead with courage, and slay the dragons of sin, temptation, and evil influences in their lives and communities. This sermon was recorded at our 2024 SMN conference. God created sex and designed it to be good. But he also determined the context in which it is good for us. In a world that preaches otherwise, let's trust and follow God when it comes to our sexual lives – and let's trust that his grace is sufficient to bring healing and hope when we have strayed outside the boundaries of his plan.
