This episode offers practical advice and examples for how we can protect the wellbeing of our teaching staff – with ideas for teachers and schools. The episode has been inspired by the recent publication of Education Support UK's Teacher Wellbeing Index 2024, which has once again painted a worrying picture about the wellbeing of those who give so much to educate our children and young people in schools. As such, we hear from Education Support about the findings of this year's Index research findings and speak to our guests about the wellbeing challenges that teaching staff face. Our expert panel offers practical ideas, discussing what schools can do to develop healthy working cultures, including promoting good working practices, building positive working relationships, and preventing staff burn-out. We discuss preventative action including coaching/mentoring, wellbeing audits, and more. We also consider how teachers can maintain a healthy work/life balance and discuss what individuals can do, including setting boundaries, saying 'no' effectively, safeguarding personal time, and good habits at home. We touch upon diversity and inclusion too, including the wellbeing challenges faced by staff from minority backgrounds and how schools can ensure they are supporting all colleagues.
Every year, countless teachers face stress-related illnesses and burnout. While some manage to keep going, often at a reduced capacity, others leave the profession entirely. In this episode of Top Class, we explore how policymakers and schools can better support teacher well-being and create healthy working environments to ensure educators remain happy and healthy. The CEO of mental health and well-being charity Education Support Sinéad McBrearty and Pedro De Bruyckere, the head of Leerpunt in Flanders in Belgium, a knowledge broker in education, speak to OECD Editor Duncan Crawford about practical strategies to create sustainable and supportive environments for teachers. Education support professionals (ESP) are the backbone of every public school in the state. Their dedication to the total student learning experience is seen every day in noisy buses, bright hallways, busy classrooms, welcoming school offices, and bustling cafeterias. Our education support members include paraeducators, administrative assistants, custodians, bus drivers, security and technology staff, food service workers, and other school employees vital to student and school success. Nationally, support professionals make up more than 40 percent of the total K-12 education workforce and more than 80 percent live in the same school districts where they work. In Maryland and across the nation, ESPs are a critically important part of the school community. Education support professionals take care of our children every day and make sure they have the tools they need to succeed in our schools and classrooms. FIGHTING FOR THE ESP BILL OF RIGHTS With continuing staff shortages, escalating student behavioral challenges, increasing responsibilities, a continuing lack of respect, and the rising costs of healthcare benefits, ESPs are being asked to do more—too often without the resources they need and the compensation they deserve. These are workload, morale, and stress issues that cause burnout and resignations. Some school board members and community and state officials have refused time and again to recognize support staff and their contributions or to provide adequate, living wages. While the Blueprint for Maryland's Future provides funding to add staff in some ESP positions, there is more to do. With recruitment and retention so difficult, the welfare and safety of students and fellow staff is at risk. Following information and listening sessions across the state, ESP member-organizers have developed an ESP Bill of Rights. Click here to learn more about the Bill of Rights and get involved. This week on rabble radio, Dr. Lisa Everitt joins Kiah Lucero to talk about the emotional labour and burnout that teachers and education assistants in Canada are facing. The two also discuss the “HEARTcare” plan – a research project aimed at improving educator well-being. About our guest and the HEARTcare project Dr. Lisa Everitt has worked as an executive staff officer with the Alberta Teachers Association since 2006. Everitt has held several roles at the association and has developed expertise in labour relations, employee benefits plans, educational research, and women in leadership. Prior to joining the Association, Everitt taught high school mathematics in the Northwest Territories and Alberta. While her interest in compassion fatigue, emotional labour and educator burnout includes an academic perspective, it also has been informed by her work as a teacher working with vulnerable young people as well as her experience assisting teachers and school leaders struggling with mental emotional health. Research conducted by the association over the course of the COVID19 pandemic revealed high levels of moral distress, symptoms of burnout, and compassion stress for Alberta teachers. This session focuses on the findings of these studies and addresses HEARTcare planning, a guide based on collective compassion to plan for mental emotional wellness for teachers and school leaders. The HEARTcare plan was designed by Dr. Astrid Kendrick of the University of Calgary following an Alberta Teachers Association and Alberta School Employee Benefit Plan sponsored two year study that examined the consequences of providing emotional labour at work. Britain is facing a teacher retention and recruitment crisis which has the potential to severely impact schools' ability to provide quality education to all students. The latest workforce survey by the Department for Education (DfE) indicates that record numbers of teachers working in state schools – about one in ten – left the profession for reasons other than retirement in 2021-22. In a recent survey conducted as part of Education Support's Commission on Teacher Retention, more than one in five secondary teachers expected to leave the profession within five years' time. Meanwhile, new national data on the teacher labour market shows that across the vast majority of secondary subjects, recruitment targets are not being met, suggesting that teacher shortages are likely to intensify in the future. In this IPR event, Professor Simon Burgess, Evelyn Forde MBE and Jack Worth discuss the factors influencing teacher retention and recruitment – such as excessive workload, insufficient pay, lack of career development opportunities, and challenging working environments – as well as the policy interventions that could improve the attractiveness of teaching as a profession. Hosted by Matt Dickson. This IPR event took place on 22 February 2024.

My guests this week are Dorian Fuhrman and Meredith Berkman. In this episode, Dorian, Meredith, and I discuss vaping and e-cigarettes. Kids and teens vaping is something is becoming a more widespread problem among younger and younger kids. While it initially was touted as a safer version of smoking, this has been marketed to kids as risk free and fun, the reality is very different. We now know that vaping carries a significant number of health risks, and leads kids on a path toward addictive behavior and substance use that can be difficult to break. Whether you are already aware of this issue or not, it's an important one to have on your radar, regardless of your child's age. I've invited the co-founders of Parents Against Vaping e-cigarettes (PAVe), Dorian and Meredith, on the show to help us better understand the issue, the risks involved, how they are working to end the sale of all flavored tobacco products, and most importantly, how to talk with your kids about it. Dorian and Meredith are two of the co-founders of Parents Against Vaping e-cigarettes , PAVe for short, a national grassroots education and advocacy organization. They founded PAVe as a response to the youth vaping epidemic, and when they discovered that a Juul representative had spoken to their son's ninth grade class and told them it was totally safe and about to get FDA approval. They testified about this incident in Congress. Today, PAVe has volunteers around the country, educating parents about the dangers of flavored e-cigarette products, and advocating to end the sale of all flavored tobacco products. What we're talking about: My guest this week, Sophie, has a different pathway to a lot of the guests I've had on the podcast so far. After things didn't go quite to plan after she finished Year 12, she saw an ad for a traineeship working in a primary school. She shares great information about what a traineeship is, how it all works, and how it has helped her decide where to go next in her career. How do traineeships work? Sophie explains how she found out about her traineeship and how she applied and got accepted. She explains how she was able to manage getting her Certificate III in Education Support while working full time at the primary school she was at, and the types of things she learnt through her qualification and the experiences she had at her workplace. Traineeships are offered in a range of different areas (see the link below for more information). Working in Education Support In her role at her school, Sophie provided education support in classrooms throughout the school. She outlines the type of work she's been doing in the school and what it's like to be an education support worker in schools. Sophie also shares how the experience she's gained and the conversations she's been able to have with others working in schools has led her to pursue teaching as a career. Before the COVID pandemic, remote schooling was uncharted territory. For many parents, in-person school seemed to normalize a hands-off approach to their children's learning. At the peak of the pandemic, school closures temporarily forced parents to take the lead on their children's education. While adapting to virtual learning has come with its challenges, it has also shed light on the importance of parental presence in academia. Today, host D-Rich is joined in conversation with five parent/educator panelists to discuss how to give children the education they deserve. For those parents who have been homeschooling their kids this year, it has been all too easy to distinguish flaws in the school systems. Coming to this disappointing realization, many are eager to step into their roles as their children's advocate, but are unsure of how to help. As a parent, the best way to ensure that your child gets the most out of their education is to be actively involved. Communicate regularly with teachers, volunteer in after-school sports programs, or make sure that your child is completing all their assignments. However you choose to show your support, it is important to maintain proximity to your child's education all the way through adulthood. • A list of all resources shared during the podcast can be found here: College Prep Professionals: https://www.yourcollegepro.com/ The Idea Farm Academy: https://ideafarmacademy.org/ Resource List: https://www.soullivestream.com/episodes/education-resource-list Quotes • “We've heard the popularized term ‘learning loss' but nobody is popularizing the term ‘learning gain.' But I think the five of us know that students have probably learned and gained more than they've lost.” (23:34-23:56 | Dr. Rudy Jackson Jr.) • “The pandemic truly showed where our schools are lagging and what schools are thriving. And that is what a lot of parents opened their eyes up to. I can't tell you how many parents have inboxed me on the daily asking me ‘what do you do to find schools? Because this isn't working for me.'” (30:39-03:57 | Cydnie Randolph) • “Check up on them, verify, and make sure they're doing what they said they did. Go to the avenues that the teacher has provided for you because my daughters go to an awesome school and the teachers set up the program, from A to B the kids knew exactly where to go. So always ask them ‘what did you do today?' And they can't say they did nothing because they always have something to do.”(34:23-34:49 | Amire Billups) • “What I realized is that the issue is that leadership and the vast majority of the educators don't live in the community so in some sense they don't see the value of the people in the community. So when scenarios come about parental and community involvement is the key to doing it better. Now you see schools with more community and parental liaison. And they are there because a lot of people see what parental voice and involvement does for schools in more affluent communities and they want the same type of opportunities for their children. (01:27:53-01:28:44 | Yoofi Dowell) • “ So many parents stop communicating and stop being involved once their child hits high school because they think they don't have to do anything else. But that's the most important time because now your child is on their way out to being an adult without having the support. So I think it's important to make sure that you can teach your child to be an advocate, but you're also an advocate for your child.” (01:33:44-01:34:26 | Lisa Rice) Connect with Southern Soul Live Stream: • Want to listen to our next episode live?
