The Cat In The Hat By Dr. Seuss  The sun did not shine.  It was too wet to play. So we sat in the house All that cold, cold, wet day.  I sat there with Sally. We sat there, we two. And I said, “How I wish We had something to do!” Too wet to go out And too cold to play ball.  So we sat in the house. We did nothing at all. So all we could do was to Sit!  Sit!   Sit!    Sit! And we did not like it. Not one little bit. And then Something went BUMP! How that bump made us jump!  We looked! Then we saw him step in on the mat! We looked! And we saw him! The cat in the Hat! And he said to us, “Why do you sit there like that?” “I know it is wet And the sun is not sunny. But we can have Lots of good fun that is funny!” “I know some good games we could play.” Said the cat. “I know some new tricks,” Said the Cat in the Hat. “A lot of good tricks. I will show them to you. Your mother  Will not mind at all if I do.”  But our fish said, “No! No! Make that cat go away! Tell that Cat in the Hat You do NOT want to play. He should not be her. He should not be about. He should not be here  When your mother is out!” “Now! Now! Have no fear. Have no fear!” said the cat. “My tricks are not bad,” Said the Cat in the Hat. “Why, we can have  Lots of good fun, if you wish, With a game that I call UP-UP-UP with a fish!” “Put me down!” said the fish. “This is no fun at all! Put me down!” said the fish. “I do NOT wish to fall!” “Have no fear!” said the cat. “I will not let you fall. I will hold you up high  As I stand on a ball. With a book on one hand! And a cup on my hat! But that is not ALL I can do!” Said the cat… “Look at me! Look at me now!” said the cat. “With a cup and a cake On the top of my hat! I can hold up TWO books! I can hold up the fish! And a little toy ship! And some milk on a dish!  2 And look! I can hop up and down on the ball! But that is not all! Oh, no. That is not all… “Look at me! Look at me! Look at me NOW! It is fun to have fun But you have to know how. I can hold up the cup And the milk and the cake! I can hold up these books! And the fish on a rake! I can hold the toy ship And a little toy man! And look! With my tail I can fan with the fan As I hop on the ball! But that is not all. Oh, no. That is not all…” That is what the cat said… Then he fell on his head! He came down with a bump From up there on the ball. And Sally and I, We saw ALL the things fall! And our fish came down, too. He fell into a pot! He said, “Do I like this? Oh, no! I do not. This is not a good game, ” Said our fish as he lit. “No, I do not like it,  Not one little bit!”  “Now look what you did!” Said the fish to the cat, “Now look at this house! Look at this! Look at that! You sank our toy ship, Sank it deep in the cake. You shook up our house And you bent our new rake. You SHOULD NOT be here When our mother is not. You get out of this house!” Said the fish in the pot.  “But I like to be here. Oh, I like it a lot!” Said the Cat in the Hat  To the fish in the pot. “I will NOT go away. I do NOT wish to go! And so,” said the Cat in the Hat, “So  so  so … I will show you  Another good game that I know!”  And then he ran out. And, then, fast as a fox, The Cat in the Hat Came back in with a box.  A big red wood box. It was shut with a hook. “Now look at this trick,” Said the cat. “Take a look!”  Then he got up on top With a tip of his hat.  “I call this game FUN-IN-A-BOX,” Said the cat. “In this box are two things I will show to you now. You will like these two things,” Said the cat with a bow.  “I will pick up the hook. You will see something new. Two things. And I call them Thing One and Thing Two. These Things will not bite you. They want to have fun.” Then, out of the box Came Thing Two and Thing One!  3 And they ran to us fast. They said, “How do you do? Would you like to shake hands With Thing One and Thing Two?”  And Sally and I  Did not know what to do. So we had to shake hands With Thing One and Thing Two. We shook their two hands. But our fish said, “No! No!  Those Things should not be  In this house! Make them go!  “They should not be here When your mother is not! Put them out! Put them out!” Said the fish in the pot.  “Have no fear, little fish,” Said the Cat in the Hat. “These Things are good Things,” And he gave them a pat. “They are tame. Oh, so tame! They have come here to play. They will give you some fun On this wet, wet, wet day.”  “Now, here is a game that they like,” Said the cat. “They like to fly kites,” Said the Cat in the Hat.  “No! Not in the house!” Said the fish in the pot. “They should not fly kites In a house! They should not. Oh! The things they will bump! Oh, the things they will hit! Oh, I do not like it! Not one little bit!”   Then Sally and I  Saw them run down the hall. We saw those two Things Bump their kites on the wall! Bump! Thump! Thump! Bump! Down the wall in the hall.  Thing Two and Thing One! They ran up! They ran down! On the string of one kite We saw Mother's new gown! Her gown with the dots That ar The Cat In The Hat By Dr. On the string of one kite We saw Mother’s new gown! Her gown with the dots That are pink, white and red. Then we saw one kite bump On the head of her bed!  Then those things ran about With big bumps, jumps and kicks And with hops and big thumps And all kinds of bad tricks. And I said, “I do NOT like the way that they play! If mother could see this, Oh, what would she say!”  Then our fish said, “Look! Look!”  And our fish shook with fear. “Your mother is on her way home! Do you hear? Oh, what will she do to us? What will she say? Oh, she will not like it To find us this way!”  “So ,Do something! Fast!” said the fish. “Do you hear! I saw her. Your mother! Your mother is near! So, as fast as you can, Think of something to do! You will have to get rid of  Thing One and thing Two!”  So, as fast as I could, I went after my net. And I said, “With my net I can get them I bet. I bet, with my net,I can get those Things yet!”  Then I let down my net. It came down with a PLOP! And I had them! At last! Those two things had to stop. Then I said to the cat, “Now you do as I say. You pack up those Things And you take them away!”  “Oh dear!” said the cat.. “You did not like our game… Oh dear.        What a shame!             What a shame!                     What a shame!”  Then he shut up the Things In the box with the hook. And the cat went away With a sad kind of look.  “That is good,” said the fish. “He has gone away. Yes. But your mother will come. She will find this big mess! And this mess is so big And so deep and so tall, We can not pick it up. There is no way at all!”  And THEN! Who was back in the house? Why, the cat! “Have no fear of this mess,” Said the cat in the Hat. “I always pick up all my playthings And so…  I will show you another Good trick that I know!”  Then we saw him pick up  All the things that were down. He picked up the cake, And the rake, and the gown, And the milk, and the strings, And the books, and the dish, And the fan, and the cup, And the ship, and the fish. And he put them away. Then he said, “That is that.” And then he was gone With a tip of his hat.  Then our mother came in  And she said to us two, “did you have any fun? Tell me. What did you do?”  And sally and I did not know What to say. Should we tell her The things that went on there that day?  Should we tell her about it? Now, what SHOULD we do? Well… What would YOU do If your mother asked YOU?

Removing ourselves from the center of everything

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 24, 2016 10:27

When we go about our day, we tell ourselves a story about what’s happening … and at the center of that narrative is a single person.Ourselves.When I talk to myself about how so-and-so is inconsiderate or treated me badly, when I tell myself that it’s OK to procrastinate because I’m tired and not in the mood … I’m at the center of this movie. It’s an ongoing story about my life and everything around me, with me at the center.I’m sure you can relate — you’re at the center of your movie as well. It’s natural, and there’s nothing wrong with doing this. But some difficulties can arise from this self-centered view of the world:We interpret other people’s actions as it relates to us, so that they are helping or harming us … giving us what we want or getting in the way of what we want. But their actions aren’t really about us — their actions are about them, because they are at the center of their own stories. When we interpret their self-centered actions through the lens of our self-centered view, the actions often make no sense, and frustrate, hurt or infuriate us.When someone makes a comment that we take as an attack on something about ourselves … we then feel the need to defend ourselves. “I’m a good person,” we think, “and they shouldn’t imply that I’m not.” But this interpretation is just a self-centered way of looking at it … we could also see it as saying something about the other person. And if we try to understand where they’re coming from, instead of seeing what it says about us, then we’ll be less defensive or offended. We interpret everything else around us — from bad traffic to Internet comments to terrorist attacks — by thinking about how it affects us. “This sucks (for me),” we think. But we could also remove ourselves from this story and just see that there are things happening in the world, and be curious about them, try to understand them, and see that they are not about us.Again, it’s natural and normal to interpret everything this way … but you can see that it can cause problems, inhibit understanding and empathy, and make us unhappy at times. So what can we do?First, become aware of the stories we tell ourselves.Next, see that we are putting ourselves at the center. Then see if we can remove ourselves from the center of the story. What would the story be without us in it? For me, that story becomes something like:Things are happening — how interesting! What can be learned from them? What can be understood?Someone else is doing something or talking, and it’s probably about them. How can I understand them better? There is difficulty and unhappiness in what other people are saying and doing. How can I feel compassion for them and offer them love? When I remember to do this — and I very, very often don’t — it lifts the difficulty that I’ve been facing internally and shift my focus to understanding and empathizing with other people, seeing how I can give them compassion.Of course, I’m not really removed from the story. I’m still there, but just not necessarily at the center of it. Instead, I focus more on my interconnectedness with everyone else, everything else, and see that they have supported me in becoming the person I am, and that I can support them as well.

To creat a habit, Tell a good story.

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 6, 2016 13:00

To Create a Habit, Tell a Good StoryIf you want to create a new exercise habit (for example), you might tell yourself something like this:“This is going to be amazing, I’m going to get fit and look incredible and be super healthy!”This is a story you’re telling yourself. It’s not real, but it has tremendous power to affect your feelings about your habit, and to change your action. You have a positive story about the habit, and it motivates you to take action. But perhaps the exercise you did one day was really tough, and you didn’t enjoy it. Your story might change, to something like, “Wow, that was super hard. It sucked!”Now your story about the habit is not so good, and you’ll be less enthusiastic about doing the habit from now on.Maybe you also missed a couple of days of exercise because you got busy. Your story changes to, “Damn, I screwed up, I’m not as good at this habit as I thought, why am I not disciplined?”The story isn’t so good. Now you might actually try not think about the habit, and you are much more likely to skip the habit from now on.The story you tell yourself about your habit matters more than most people realize. So the key is to shape the story, become your own habit storyteller, and create a story that will make you more likely to stick to the habit.Telling a Good StoryThe truth is that none of these stories is actually true. They’re just narratives we have made up, in our minds, about what’s going on. The reality is what’s happening right now, and in an “ideal” world we would just drop the stories and be present with the moment, experiencing reality as it is.There’s no such thing as an ideal world, though. We tell stories. That’s what we do. So the key is to realize when you’re telling a negative story that’s going to make you quit the habit, and instead create a more helpful story.Try this:1. Ask yourself how you feel about the habit you’re creating. Are you psyched about it? Are you discouraged? Looking forward to it or dreading it? Feel strong about it or feel like you’re doing lousy? Is it a wonderful experience for you or are you ploughing through the suckiness? This is all an indicator of what story you’re telling yourself.2. Start creating a better story by focusing on the things you love about the habit. You could focus on how much you hate the habit, or you could focus on what you love. It’s your choice. Find things to appreciate about the habit. Look at your successes and think, “Man, that’s awesome that I’ve done those things.”This is not to say that you should only think positive thoughts, or that you should ignore the negative. But if your story is on the balance more positive than negative, you’ll be more resilient. You’ll be able to handle the negative stuff with grace, because you have a positive feeling about the habit. If you resent doing the habit, or see it as a sacrifice, you’re more likely to blow the negative aspects up when they happen. But people with a strongly positive story will be likely to weather the storm of negative aspects of the habit. The Positive Story ExerciseTry to think about some of the following thoughts when you’re working on your habit:1. This makes me feel strong/healthy/empowered (or some other positive trait).2. I am proud of doing this habit.3. I have had some great successes with this.4. I’m learning a lot with this habit.5. I’ve had good experiences with this habit.6. There are some exciting things about this that I’d like to share with people.7. I can appreciate the little things about this habit.8. There are things I genuinely love about this habit.9. This can sometimes be a struggle but it’s definitely worth it.10. This habit is improving my life an multiple ways.11. I’m lucky to be able to do this habit.12. There are things about this habit that I look forward to.13. I’ve missed doing this habit sometimes, but over the long run it doesn’t matter.14. Doing this habit makes me more resilient.15. When I’ve done this habit, I feel accomplished and satisfied.16. I feel like a better person when I do this habit.Just think about one of these each time you do the habit, or just after. And then try another one on the next time you do the habit.Slowly, with thoughts like these and others you might think of, you’ll start to have a more positive story about the habit. And that will make all the difference — not only will you want to stay with it longer, you’ll enjoy it more each time you do it.

There is a famous stone water basin (or “tsukubai”) outside of the even more famous Ryoan-ji Temple in Kyoto, with four characters that read: “ware tada shiru taru.”This is a Zen saying that can be translated in a number of ways, all to do with contentment. But my favorite translation is:“All you need, you already have.”I think it’s such a lovely way of looking at life.As you sit here reading this article, pause and take an assessment of your life right now. Chances are, you have enough food, clothing, shelter, and other basic necessities in your life. You might also have loved ones, people who care about you. You are (mostly) comfortable, without any desperate needs. All you need, you already have. And yet we don’t see life this way … we are dissatisfied, looking for more comfort, more love, more knowledge, more certainty, more possessions, more food, more entertainment, more validation. I do this too — I’m not criticizing anyone. We don’t often embody the idea that we already have enough. If we remember to do so, we can give thanks for what we have. We can appreciate the beauty, the preciousness, of every moment, of being alive. It is a miracle, and we don’t have to take it for granted. So to me the question is: how can we learn to embody this idea?“All you need, you already have.”Learning to Embody Enough-nessIt’s nice to say that we have all we need, but what does this mean in practice? What actions can we take to help us remember this?I find it helpful to try to remember a few principles in my daily life:Appreciation. If we have all we need, the problem is that we forget this simple fact. So we can develop the habit of noticing what we already have, being thankful for it, not taking it for granted. We can appreciate the people in our lives (instead of complaining about them), the possessions we already have (instead of thinking we need more), the food we get to eat (which might mitigate our desire for yet more food pleasures), the simple moments that we often take for granted (instead of needing even more entertainment and distraction).Respect. If we appreciate something or someone, we might treat them with respect. In the Zen tradition, bowing to others and even to your meditation cushion are a deep part of practice. It shows a respect for the world around us, which supports us and which we are deeply a part of. You might not want to bow to everyone you meet, but you can make a mental bow to them, offering respect internally even if you don’t make any sign that you’re bowing. It will show in your other actions.Turning towards others. If we already have enough … why worry so much about ourselves? Why not see what we can do for others? There are others who are suffering, perhaps starving or facing violence, or perhaps just sick with anxiety or depression. We can’t solve all of these ills alone, of course, but if we do our best to help others as much as possible, perhaps we can contribute towards the betterment of the lives of all beings. This doesn’t mean you need to spend every waking hour devoted to helping other people, but even considering whether your motivations are other-facing or for yourself is a good practice. So how do we learn to embody these principles? Through habits and rituals.Rituals to Embody Enough-nessIt’s hard to remember to be present and grateful and filled with enough-ness throughout the day, with all that we have going on, with all of our distractions and internal stories. So I recommend forming little rituals that help us remember. Here’s a list of ideas for rituals, but I don’t recommend trying to form all of these rituals, and especially not all at once — try one at a time and see what helps you:Wake up and say a little prayer of thanks for what you have in your life.Keep a one-paragraph gratitude journal every evening. When you meet someone, bow to them (in your mind) out of respect. You might touch your heart or offer them a smile if that helps. When you eat, say a little prayer of thanks to everyone who made your meal possible (farmers, cooks, transporters, their families, etc.). Appreciate every bite if you can. Before you start a new activity (a work task, a workout, a meeting), pause and ask yourself what your intention is for this activity. Is it focused on helping others? When you are done with an activity, show respect for others, your environment and your equipment by respectfully and mindfully cleaning up, instead of rushing to the next activity. There are other rituals, of course, but these are a good start. You might also ask yourself, before you buy something … whether you really need more or if you have enough. Ask yourself, before you go to an app on your phone or a website on your computer … whether you are doing it to help others or to fulfill a “need” that you don’t need fulfilled. Ask yourself, as you interact with someone else, whether you’re showing them deep respect and appreciation, whether you’re focused on helping them or protecting yourself.Ask yourself, regularly throughout your day, whether you have all you need. I think you’ll find that you do, and by appreciating that fact more often, you can see what a profound miracle that is.

Ladies and gentlemen, I'm delighted to introduce to you a very pretty girl, Miss Brown. She is a very good teacher from the USA. Ladies and gentlemen, I'm delighted to introduce to you a new teacher from the USA., Miss Ann Brown. She is a doctor of American Literature with experience of teaching English as a Foreign Language. Chinese: You look pale. What's the matter? American: I'm feeling sick. A cold, maybe. Chinese: Go and see the doctor. Drink more water. Did you take any pills? Chinese medicine works wonderful. Would you like to try? Put on more clothes. Have a good rest. American: You are not my mother, are you? Take care of yourself. I hope you'll be better soon." (1)I'm sorry to hear that (you've got a bad cold). (2)I hope you'll be all right very soon. (3)Take extra care of yourself. (4)That's too bad. What's the matter? (5)How are you feeling now? (1)I'd like to make an appointment with you. When will you be free/available? (2)Let's get together some time next week. What date do you suggest? (3)How about coming to my place for dinner this Saturday? (4)I'd like to... What time would be convenient for you? (5)Would... suit you? (6)I wonder if we could arrange a meeting... (7)Do you happen to be free on...? (8)Have you got any plan for this weekend? How about...? (9)I am having some friends around during the weekend. Would you like to join us?

Gratitude to Cure the Impulse to Buy More StuffIt’s funny that two days with such opposing spirits come back-to-back in our calendars here in the U.S.: Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday. One is about being thankful for what you have, and the other is about getting more of what you don’t have. They aren’t aligned at all.The good news is that we can use our thankfulness to overcome the urges to buy a lot of stuff — these urges being created in us by the corporations and purveyors of consumerism. We don’t have to listen to their messages of needing more things at discount (as if spending our money or getting into debt is “saving” money) or needing to buy things for our loved ones to show our love for them.We can counter these messages with gratitude:1. I’m grateful for what I already have, for the life I’m already living … and so I don’t need more. I can save much more by just not buying anything, and finding joy and contentedness in what I already have.2. We can show our love for people not by buying them stuff, but by showing our gratitude for them being in our lives: sending them thoughtful letters or notes, giving hugs, spending time with them, playing games indoors and out with them.We will get the impulse to buy more, but that doesn’t mean we need to follow the impulses. We can recognize the more rapid beating of our hearts when we begin to consider a shopping purchase, the excitement that comes from imagining a future with these purchases in our lives. Imagining a future happiness gets us excited!Instead, we can calm these heart flutters by refocusing our attention on the present. Turn your attention to what’s in front of you, right now, and realize how amazing it is that you have all of this in your life. Turn your attention to the people in your life, near and far, and find gratitude for their presence in your heart. Turn to all the fortune you have, materially and monetarily and in spirit, and be grateful it’s there. Be grateful for the opportunity to live life, for the joy that you can find in every moment, for the good that’s inside of you right now. These are what can bring us joy, not future purchases. This moment is all we need, and it is an opportunity for thunderous gratitude.

So this is one of the reason why SUV in China is very popular and still growing.“我们明白很多家庭的选择会从轿车转向运动型多功能汽车,因为其安全性,舒适性与更大的空间。因为现在你有家庭,有孩子,你显然清楚运动型多功能汽车更好。即使你有两个孩子,运动型多功能汽车看起来比轿车更好。所以这也是为什么运动型多功能汽车在中国非常流行,而且需求还在不断增长的原因。”In the year through October, sales of SUVs surged 46 percent year-on-year in a broader market that grew 1.5 percent. 46%。According to Automotive Foresight, a market and industry research company, 32 new SUV models are expected to be released in China for 2015. Wu Song, General Manager of Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC Motor), says he expects Chinese brands will hit a big growth in the auto market next year, despite the country's slowest economic growth in decades:广汽集团(GAC汽车)总经理武松表示,尽管国家经济增长十分缓慢,但他预计明年汽车市场上中国的品牌将大增:Next year the speed of the Chinese auto market's growth will be roughly the same as this year.I estimate it will also be a small increase. But the structure of consumption will undergo a deep change, like it has this year. From January to October the market grew six percent, but for Chinese brands the growth was higher. So I think next year the car market will grow by ten percent or less, I'd estimate at the level of five to six percent,“明年中国汽车市场的增长速度将与今年大致相同。我估计这也将是小幅增加。但消费结构将与今年一样发生深刻变化,1月到10月市场增长了6%,但中国的品牌增长更高。因此,我认为,明年的汽车市场将增长10%或以下,我估计在5-6%阶段。”Meanwhile, China's official stats show that car prices dropped 3.4 percent in the first nine months of this year, out pacing the 1.2 percent decline for passenger vehicles overall. HIS Automotive, an interests group for car manufacturers, predicts car sales growth is expected to slip to 11 percent next year. 11%。Analysts at Fitch Ratings, an international ratings agency, warns that new SUVs will have a tougher time commanding fat profit margins they may have enjoyed in recent years. Automotive Foresight's Yale Zhang, however, disagrees, saying there is still room for growth in the Chinese market, especially in big cities:然而汽车预测市场总监张豫并不同意,说道中国市场仍有增长的空间,尤其是在大城市:The market actually slow down a little bit this year because of the economy and also the stock market crisis. But overall the market has not really been saturated. It probably is in some larger cities, but in the majority of China cities there are plenty of room for the automobiles to grow further,“由于经济股市危机,今年市场确实放慢了一点,但市场大体还没有真正饱和,一些大城市可能是这样,但中国大多数城市仍有着汽车进一步发展的空间。Carmakers like Volkswagen have expressed eagerness to expand investment in the Chinese market, with six new locally made models to be launched in the next three to four years.汽车制造商们,例如大众都表示渴望在中国市场扩大投资,今后的3到4年将推出6款新型本地制造车。

Most complaints made by Chinese consumers last year were about online shopping, a report from China's top legislative body said on Monday. The number of complaints and disputes related to shopping on the Internet rose sharply and the network has become a breeding ground for counterfeits, the report by a law enforcement team under the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress said. In 2014, Chinese industrial and commercial authorities dealt with 78,000 complaints concerning online shopping, up 356.6 percent year-on-year.2014年,工商部处理了78,000件与网上购物相关的投诉,与去年同期相比增长了356.6%。Of the total of 20,135 cases taken on by consumer associations, 92.3 percent concerned online purchases, the report said. Yan Junqi, vice-chairwoman of the NPC Standing Committee, said: "Ignoring consumers' rights and selling counterfeits are very prominent in the online shopping industry." She revealed that just 58.7 percent of products sold online were found to be authentic during a random inspection in 2014 by the State Administration of Industry and Commerce. With the boom in complaints, the number of disputes caused by online purchases also went up, she said. Beijing Chaoyang District People's Court has handled 107 such disputes since the revised Chinese Consumer Protection Law took effect on March 15 last year, she said. A typical example, from Anhui province's financial website, described how a woman surnamed Xu paid a 2,000 yuan ($316)deposit before she bought sanitary ware priced 1,000 yuan cheaper online than she could find elsewhere. But when it was delivered, Xu found it was poor quality and she was told the deposit could not be repaid because it was a sale product. Yan suggested that the Supreme People's Court should clarify the revised law by the end of this year and appealed to consumer associations to play their role. Qiu Baochang, head of the lawyers' group for the China Consumers' Association, said: "We are always overloaded with work since the revised law came into effect.中国消费者协会律师团团长邱宝昌说:“自修订后的法律生效以来,我们常常超负荷工作。”"We have asked officers to update their knowledge of the law and how the online industry works, including means of payment, to catch up with the pace at which e-commerce is developing."“我们已经要求相关办事人员更新其关于法律以及网购产业运作方式的知识,其中包括对支付方式的了解,以此来赶上电子商务发展的步伐。”

A Guide for All of Us: Getting Good at Storytelling & Other Superhuman Social SkillsBy Leo BabautaLet’s face it: most of us aren’t amazing social ninjas, good at working any social situation, let alone comfortable telling a captivating story in front of a crowd. It would be great if there were a manual that taught us the key social skills for being good at parties, talking to strangers, making amazing friendships.Luckily for us losers, my friend Tynan has written a new book, Superhuman Social Skills, and I honestly think it’s fantastic. I know I’m biased, but after reading it I believe it’s something pretty much every human being should read (and it’s free for the Kindle today). We’re not given a manual for learning social skills, and so we face so many problems because of it, from social anxiety to loneliness.A bit of background on Tynan: he was a social loser into adulthood (seriously — ask to see his “color guard” photos). Then he got into the pickup artist community (I know, they often sound like scumbags, but he isn’t one) and honed his social skills to get better at talking to women. What resulted from that, plus traveling the world and meeting lots of people, is that he has a good number of really good friends (I’m the best one of them, but there are other good ones too), and is comfortable in lots of social situations.I consider myself socially awkward, and reading his book gave me a sense of excitement that I could improve. I’ve recommended the book to my kids who are entering adulthood, because I think it’ll give them a big boost. But except for the most socially skilled of my friends, I think everyone I know should read this book.I asked Tynan if I could interview him about some of the key social skills he talks about, including the one that I find most fascinating and useful — storytelling.Leo: Who do you think needs help with social skills?Tynan: I think we can all improve our social skills in one way or another. For some people it might be a case of diminishing returns, but I don’t think that’s true of most.Because social skills aren’t taught through normal avenues of learning like school or through peers, most people don’t actively work on improving them. That means that a lot of us have plenty room for improvement that can be capitalized on through proactive learning.Leo: Why is this such a difficult problem to solve?Tynan: Social skills feel more like integral parts of us than external skills like playing the piano. So there’s a lot of ego involved. To really improve them often involves a level of humility that can be uncomfortable.Another effect of this discomfort is that people don’t talk about social skills. If you and I were both learning to program, we would talk about our challenges and share learning resources. But with social skills, you don’t really see much of that.Leo: How did you solve it? What changes did you see in your life as a result?Tynan: The big first step for me was becoming involved in the pickup community. I was an introverted nerd who was completely clueless with women, and that led to me humbling myself and building up my social skills from the ground up.I was focused on dating, but may have benefited even more in other areas, from making friends to interacting with my family. My experience with pickup helped me see social skills as something that could be improved upon, and I began to look at things like making friends, telling stories, and interacting with my friend group through a similarly analytical lens.Leo: There are a ton of tips in your book — where should someone start?Tynan: I think it really varies from person to person. We all have our strengths and weaknesses, and the distribution of them seems to be fairly uniform. But for someone who doesn’t have a good idea of what his weaknesses are, I’d suggest either working on storytelling or on identifying his annoying habits. Storytelling is a universal skill that can have a huge impact on others, and annoying habits are often the difference between a friendship being created or not.Leo: Without giving away the book, can you share some top tips for becoming a better storyteller?Tynan: I’m not sure I’ve ever met anyone who makes their stories too short. I’ve met a lot who make their stories way too long. It’s fun to tell a story, so we all have a tendency to bask in that and draw it out as long as possible. Really, though, it’s better to give people the juicy bits of a story and then move on to something else. They’ll always ask if they want more information.Give a minimum of introduction, build up the tension, and then hit them with the payoff of the story. Remember that if you make your stories too long, either by going on tangents, repeating yourself, or adding too much detail, people won’t want to hear more stories in the future because they’ll worry that you won’t stop talking. On the other hand, if you always keep your stories short and sweet, you’ll be asked to tell more of them.Leo: What are some common annoying habits that people often have, that maybe they aren’t aware of? How does someone create awareness of their annoying habits?Tynan: I think a lot of the most common annoying habits are stem from not understanding the natural flow of conversation. I’m always surprised at how many people dominate conversations without receiving any sort of indication that the other party is happy to just sit and listen passively. As a general rule of thumb, you should be prepared to fill in any dead spot in the conversation, but should allow the other person to talk as much as they want to. A conversation between two socially savvy people will almost always hover at a one-to-one ratio of each party speaking.Leo: Why do you think storytelling is such a key skill for most of us social losers?Tynan: Stories are the means by which we communicate our experiences, and our experiences have shaped us into who we are today. So by telling stories, you’re effectively communicating who you are as a person, and how you became that way. To really become good friends with someone, you can’t just share facts or opinions– you have to share yourself, and stories are how you do that.Leo: If you sucked at telling stories, how would you train to get good at it? Is there a way you could practice with friends, or strangers? How can you get good feedback and improve quickly?Tynan: Just like anything, it’s all about getting in the repetitions. The first key is to realize that a story doesn’t have to be an epic tale that could eventually become a movie– it just has to be something that happened to you.Think about standup comedians– they tell humorous stories all the time, but the content itself isn’t all that amazing. The value is in the delivery. So tell your friends and family things that happened to you. Anything that was funny or interesting or unexpected. And if you can’t think of anything like that, just tell people boring things that happened to you, and try to make them interesting. I used to tell people about grocery shopping just to practice telling stories. You’re already getting good feedback on your stories, but you’re probably ignoring it. Social etiquette means that all negative feedback is delivered in shades of gray. No one will tell you that your story sucks, but they will gently try to change the topic, butt in, or show signs of disinterest like breaking eye contact or shifting body language.Leo: You talked about making a list of your favorite stories from A-Z (note to reader: read the book for more on this technique) … what if you don’t think you have any good stories? Is this a sign that you need to live life differently?Tynan: I think it would be hard to live twenty or more years and not have at least twenty-six interesting experiences that could be turned into stories. Almost impossible, really. If you don’t think that you have interesting stories, you probably just don’t understand what makes an interesting story. It’s 20% content, 80% delivery. On the other hand, once you’re nailing the delivery every time, the biggest room for improvement comes from the content. I’ve found the content for my best stories come from travel and/or going outside of my comfort zone, which are two things anyone can do.Leo: How can you tell if your story isn’t doing well? It seems like a lot of people tell boring stories, thinking that the other person is completely interested, unaware that they’re droning on. And if you do notice, what can you do? Also … how do you balance telling a good story with listening and not talking too much?Tynan: If your story is really good, people will be looking you directly in the eyes, showing emotion, and asking questions or saying things like, “No way!”. If you don’t see those signs, you should assume that the other person isn’t interested. That might not be true, but it’s far better to err on the side of assuming disinterest. There’s an easy test you can employ if you think someone may possibly not be interested: just stop the story. Look for any sort of distraction, and take it. Or just say, “Anyway– it’s a long story.”If they want the story to end, you’ve just given them what they want. If they want to hear the rest of the story, they will ask you to continue 100% of the time. This technique works every single time and makes you a very pleasant person to talk to.Your stories should be short and modular. No epic tales with a million tangents and side-stories, just short concentrated stories. Tell one, give the other person an opportunity to tell one of their own, change the topic, or ask a question, and if they don’t take it, continue on to another one.As a general rule, you want to be as flexible as possible, but to allow the other person to be inflexible. So if they want to talk 100% of the time or 0% of the time, you oblige them and make it as comfortable as possible.Leo: Let’s say you walk into a party, or a bar … how do you get to the point where you can start telling one of your stories to strangers? I always feel awkward when I enter a place, and don’t know how to approach a group or a stranger and just start talking.Tynan: A good combination is a question coupled with a related story. For example, let’s say you’re at your friend Bob’s party. You could ask people how they know Bob, which is an easy icebreaker for anyone, and then follow it up with a great story about how the two of you met. If they go into their own great story after the question, you don’t necessarily have to tell yours, but if they give a really terse response like, “Oh, we met at work”, you’re armed with a good story that’s ready to go.Almost everyone feels awkward in these situations, but most are also hoping to have good conversations and meet people. By practicing social skills and preparing for situations like this, you’ll actually be one of the least nervous ones.Leo: How do you go from telling stories to making a real connection and making a friend?Tynan: To have a friendship you need shared experiences and mutual understanding. Stories are one third of that equation– they help your new friend understand you. To understand them, you need to be a good listener. Even if they’re telling a really bad story, think of it as an opportunity to get to know them, faults and all.Tell stories that encapsulate a wide range of your experience as a human, and encourage the other person to do the same. That’s how you fill the blank canvas in your mind with data points to try to understand them.(由于字数限制4000个字符,后面的实在贴不上了。)
