Kevin Ely spent many years running the brewhouse at Uinta's production brewery in Salt Lake City, but family brought him to a farm in rural eastern Ohio. Built next to the farm where his wife grew up, Wooly Pig (https://www.woolypigfarmbrewery.com) Farm Brewery is the result of applying big-brewery-systems thinking to the smallest, most self-sufficient farm scale. From embracing the imperfect but interesting well water on the farm to side-streaming brewhouse waste via their drove of Mangalica pigs, he's using every tool available to reduce waste and costs while making the highest-quality beer. In this episode, Ely discusses: making farmhouse lagers on a small scale without sacrificing quality gently handling everything—from milling grains to fermenting beer via carefully boiled wort—for a more delicate beer using slightly higher-kilned pilsner malt for better flavor and fullness building character into dunkel with rye malt evaluating water sources and managing their unusual well water creating engaging beer experiences at the farm using livestock to process organic waste from the brewery And more. Welcome to episode 255 We kick things off with Skazz admitting he's rethinking his playing the Elder Scrolls series. Despite claiming he doesn't like the games, he owns Skyrim on multiple systems... Ram then shares how he's gotten into Korean food after binge-watching a variety of Korean TV shows. He gives a quick rundown of how these shows work and highlights some of his favorites. Skazz was initially concerned but felt reassured when he learned that Ram watches the subtitled versions instead of the dubbed ones. Next, we dive into a discussion about modern media. We reminisce about missing the days of 22-episode TV seasons, where there weren't years-long gaps between season. We also discuss if modern shows are chasing the wrong quality and are we seeing a lack of innovation? We also touch on the infamous curse of disappointing TV show finales. On the gaming front, Skazz talks about playing the recently released English version of Ys 10: Nordics. In preparation, he's been revisiting the first nine games in the series. He mentions having previously played part of the Japanese version of Ys 10, but his lack of Japanese language skills made it a challenge. He also discusses some of the game's new mechanics, including a co-op feature. Finally, in a twist that will surprise regulars, Ram has been playing an indie horror game called Amanda the Adventurer. The game involves exploring an old attic and watching VHS tapes of Amanda and her companion Wooly as things take a progressively weirder—and darker—turn. Notes Pong had no software, and was in fact implemented only via hardware The many platforms of Skyrim You too can enjoy kimchi with this Korean cookbook How did Gandalf sound in other languages? In 1929, Montana Wildlife shared a story that quickly spread among fishermen across the United States, sparking curiosity and wonder. It was a tale of a remote lake in Montana, so cold that it seemed to defy nature itself. The water was said to be so frigid that fishing hooks, upon touching the surface, would shatter like glass. For those daring enough to fish these icy depths, ordinary tactics simply wouldn't do. Let's investigate the tales of Montana fishermen's fears when their catch of the day came up a bit wooly. Listen now to 63 Future Now Podcast It appears we may have some new lifeforms on the planet, ones that can take Nitrogen from the air rather than the ground; makes sense considering that 78% of the atmosphere is Nitrogen. Scientists are fascinated, and see this as a big deal, up there with the creation of plants and animals! Also amazing this week is our exploration of interspecies communications and its intersection with AI. Yes, contact with critters of all kinds will soon be happening, with AI serving as a kind of Rosetta Stone between us and the myriad of other intelligences that live on this planet. A fascinating development in trans species communications, with many unexpected twists and turns to come! Meanwhile, we have successfully used optics for communicating for the first time with a space probe 130 million miles away, and are testing a new kind of space propulsion system that is non-reactive! Dusty Holley is a man with many talents and a diverse knowledge base that allows him to be equally at home in a board room or sitting on a board in a set of cow pens. Aside from being the Director of Field Services for the Florida Cattlemen's Association, he's a great storyteller with extensive family roots in our state's cow culture. Dusty set aside some time from his busy schedule to share that family history, part of which relates directly to the infamous Barber-Mizell Feud, and a good deal of general Florida history gleaned through various family accounts. Trust me when I say you don't want to miss the historical accounts captured in this conversation.
I will be welcoming Edmund to the show. Edmund grew up on a farm and he had seen the creatures a couple of times. He said "I was a kid in 1978 and I was not afraid of them until it came to my window." It was looking through my bedroom window, and it scared me so bad I got up and ran into the living room. I was home alone with my cousin, who was asleep. As I was looking out our living room window, there was another one standing up on the hillside nearby. These two absolutely instilled me with fear. The previous one didn't scare me a bit, but these felt malevolent." Edmund he said "It would flip it's lip up at me and I could see it's teeth. The teeth were like ours just much bigger. My mother later told me that she was aware of them being on the property."

Show Notes for Episode 4: I hope you enjoy this first attempt to interview members of the World of Warcraft community about how they play, the role WoW plays in their lives, and issues around the game. For a first interview subject, the choice was obvious. As co-host of the Thrall's Balls podcast, Gershom was the first WoW content creator to reach out to me and to talk up this podcast on that show. In this first bonus episode, Gershom and I have less of an interview. Instead, this is a wide-ranging conversation about life, WoW, family, podcasts, our excitement for the new focus on solo content, the need for Follower Raids (we agree), favorite zones, talking to NPCs, and what fans of this show should be called. Spoilers there - her name is way better than mine! It is more than an hour, but I promise this conversation is lively and interesting. Our special guest, the inspiring Skyler Stevens from UNM Gallup campus, joins us to chart the intersection of daydreaming studies in mice and her vibrant journey in the realm of science, from biology to infectious disease research. Imagine, if you will, mice reflecting on checkerboard patterns – it's a delightful thought that might carry a deeper evolutionary purpose, much like the paths that led Skyler from the deserts of the Southwest to the academic thralls of New England and back again. The conversation takes a practical turn, revealing the behind-the-scenes of nurse education and anatomy management. Skyler's experiences in teaching anatomy, complete with the hilarious trials of dealing with unexpected pig uteruses, are bound to bring a chuckle. And if you're an animal lover, you're in for a treat! We share laughs over pet antics, highlighting how these loyal companions weave themselves into the fabric of our lives. Skyler's tales from the classroom and her service dog Missy May's escapades offer a glimpse into the human side of science and education. As we close the book on the year, we reminisce about the Christmas cheer spread among students by Dad and the family dogs, Bunsen and Beaker. The joy of the festive season intermingles with heartfelt stories from our own lives, leaving you with a warm, fuzzy feeling as we head into the holidays. We're incredibly thankful for the "pot pack" community's support and hope to leave you smiling as you await our return in February. So, snuggle in with a hot cocoa, and let's send off the year with a blend of science, laughter, and good old holiday spirit!Bunsen and Beaker Links:30% off the first month at Zencastr - use the code in the show!https://zen.ai/3LXIX2UYb1RLXwtWHHjryXAutdr3HS5EpVHMW80BOKgSave 10% at Bark and Beyond with the coupon code BUNSEN!The 2024 Bunsen and Beaker Calendar is ready to order! The Ginger Stuffie is on presale so check the link here!Join The Paw Pack to Support The Show!https://bunsenbernerbmd.com/pages/paw-pack-plus-communityOur Website! The Bunsen and Beaker Website has adorable merch with hundreds of different combinations of designs and apparel- all with Printful- one of the highest quality companies we could find!www.bunsenbernerbmd.comSign up for our Weekly Newsletter!Bunsen and Beaker on Twitter:Bunsen and Beaker on TikTok:Bunsen and Beaker on FacebookSupport the showFor Science, Empathy, and Cuteness!Being Kind is a Superpower.https://twitter.com/bunsenbernerbmd
