In this episode of The Nonprofit Exchange, I, Hugh Ballou, had the pleasure of reconnecting with an old friend and seasoned entrepreneur, Clay Hicks. Clay is the founder of H7, a network dedicated to fostering meaningful connections among professionals. Our discussion centered around his trademarked methodology: "Connect, Serve, and Ask," which has been a guiding principle in his work since its inception in 2018. Clay shared his journey as an entrepreneur over the past 23 years, emphasizing his passion for leadership and the importance of building relationships. He recounted how the "Connect, Serve, and Ask" methodology evolved from his experiences of meeting with individuals one-on-one, initially starting in 2014. Through his reflections, he realized the significance of connecting with others, serving them genuinely, and ultimately asking for help when needed. This approach has proven to be a powerful way to earn trust and build mutually beneficial relationships. We delved into the importance of focusing on relationships rather than outcomes, a concept that resonated deeply with both of us. Clay articulated that when we prioritize building solid relationships, the desired outcomes—whether in fundraising, networking, or team dynamics—become more predictable and achievable. He highlighted that this principle is crucial for nonprofit leaders who aim to make a meaningful impact in their communities. As we explored the role of social media, particularly LinkedIn, in building connections, Clay pointed out common mistakes that many make, such as relying on automated messages and failing to provide value in their posts. He stressed the importance of authentic engagement and the need to treat social media as a platform for relationship-building rather than mere self-promotion. Clay also introduced practical strategies for initiating conversations with potential volunteers, board members, and donors. He provided insightful questions to help listeners connect with others on a deeper level, emphasizing the value of understanding their stories and needs. Throughout the episode, Clay's enthusiasm for helping others and his commitment to fostering a culture of trust and collaboration shone through. He invited listeners to explore H7 and participate in their meetings to experience firsthand the power of networking grounded in the "Connect, Serve, and Ask" philosophy. In closing, Clay left us with a powerful reminder: when we focus on relationships, the outcomes we seek will naturally follow. This episode is a treasure trove of insights for nonprofit leaders looking to enhance their networking skills and build impactful relationships in their work. Learn more about your ad choices. This week's EYE ON NPI has a dash of DSI - it's the new STM32U5 Series microcontroller processors from ST (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/stm32u5-series-ultra-low-power-mcus). These bring a wonderful upgrade from the same-old same-old Cortex M4 or M7 with some eye-popping peripherals that will make quick work of any graphics project, but without the weight of a Linux processor overhead. There's lots of chips that purport to have a 'graphics interface' but the moment you sit down to actually use it, you realize that there's very limited SRAM for the graphics display. So you either have to use slow external PSRAM, or you don't get a double-buffer for smooth updates. That's because it's kinda rare to see a microcontroller with more than maybe 1 MB of SRAM. The STM32U5 series is plumped up with up to 3 MBytes of delicious on-chip SRAM, which is perfect for double buffering a 800x480 display with 1.5MB left over, or even double-buffered 720x720 with 1 MB of SRAM left over. Compare that to the STM32H7's max of 1 MB. (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/stm32h7-32-bit-high-performance-mcu) That RAM will come in handy because this is one of the first microcontrollers we've seen that has true DSI host support! DSI (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_Serial_Interface) is the latest interface standard for connecting to medium-size displays of approximately 480x480 pixels or larger. It's a differential signalling interface which means fewer pins, but the ability to go fast to address fairly large displays. However, because it's differential and high speed, you really need peripheral support - which very few chips have unless you upgrade to microprocessors that drive phones or tablets. Previous to DSI, folks would use SPI displays for up to about 320x240 (https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=spi+display) and 8-bit parallel for displays from 128x640 up to around 480x320 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1774) and then for displays larger than that - 480x272 or greater - RGB TTL dotclock interface. SPI displays are nice because they have a built in framebuffer - but SPI is slow so you can't drive anything but the smallest screens. Parallel is faster, but still suffers from speed issues. RGB TTL displays have no framebuffer, so you have to write them continuously, and that requires built in RAM or PSRAM and hardware support to keep up with 20-60 FPS updates. Also, ideally, double-buffers to avoid tearing. However, you need a pin for each bit of colors, so easily 30 pins are needed - and even then RGB TTL tends to top out at 1024x600. For 720p or 1080p, most folks would go with HDMI, but you can get these displays with DSI interfaces: and DSI only uses 6-10 pins for 2 to 4 lanes of data plus a clock lane. These new chips are a nice step up from the STM32F7 and H7 series (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/stm32h7-32-bit-high-performance-mcu) in that they have the low price, multiple pin package count, with improved RAM and display support. There's also variants with hardware crypto support, high-speed USB, and like we mentioned, with DSI host. There's also a new version of the NeoChrom graphics engine that has vector graphics support, vector font rendering, and JPEG hardware decoding which will allow for video playback with MJPEG (https://blog.st.com/neochrom-gpu-neochromvg-gpu/). We're excited to see DSI interfaces make their way into microcontrollers, and doubly so because the STM32U5 series (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/stm32u5-series-ultra-low-power-mcus) is in stock for immediate shipment from DigiKey! We particularly like the feel of the STM32U599 as it has a l'il bit of everything without being top-of-the-line, and it comes in QFP (https://www.digikey.com/short/15vv8m9r) for easy integration no matter what fabrication setup you've got. Order some STM32's from DigiKey today and they will ship faster than you can render a bouncing ball, making its way to you by tomorrow afternoon.
In an update presented to the Portfolio Committee on Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development on October 20, the South African Poultry Association (Sapa) has estimated that 30% of the South African poultry industry has been impacted on by the latest outbreaks of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). Sapa broiler organisation GM Izaak Breitenbach said the current outbreak of the H5N1 and H7N6 strains of HPAI will cost the industry in excess of R1.8-billion, which is the amount of losses the industry experienced during the prior period of HPAI outbreaks in 2019, which saw three-million birds culled. Sapa egg organisation GM Dr Abongile Balarane estimated that the losses to the industry could be as high as R3-billion, given that a 30% impact to the industry equates to 30% of its yearly revenue of about R12-billion lost. South Africa had about 27-million layer hens that produce eggs on a daily basis, of which five-million had to be culled for both HPAI strains. Another 2.5-million broiler chickens also had to be culled this year, bringing the total amount of culled chickens to 7.5-million. The H7N6 strain of the virus was first reported on June 1 on a farm in Mpumalanga. DALRRD animal health director Mpho Mojo confirmed that the H7N6 strain of the virus spreads slower and is less deadly than its H5N1 counterpart, adding that many birds often survive the disease; however, it has nonetheless had a significant impact on the local poultry industry. Additionally, she said that, because the H7N6 strain only occurs in South Africa and is not closely similar to any other AI strains in the rest of the world, it means that the few vaccines that have been developed against H7 may only have limited efficacy against South African strains. Before any new vaccine can be registered, they need to be carefully assessed and may require local trial work to confirm their efficacy, which may delay their registration. Balarane confirmed that locally produced vaccines were being developed but said this was a process that would take some time to complete. Sapa anticipated that the poultry industry would have been reduced to 17.3-million layer hens by early 2024, down from 27.6-million layer hens in 2019 and 27.4-million in 2022. Balarane said it would take the industry 17 months to recover lost production, with farmers intending to focus on recouping the 30% impact of the poultry industry next year. Since HPAI first became a widespread problem in South Africa in 2017, more than 13-million birds had been culled. With the local poultry production comprising 95% of caged operations, 1% of barn systems and 4% of free range systems, it means that most chickens are in close proximity to each other and easily spread the disease. Mojo noted that there were fewer cases of HPAI reported in areas where small-scale farmers have free range operations and are based far from other farms. Breitenbach highlighted that reported cases of HPAI had come down in October, compared with September, which was a positive indicator; however, a new case of the H7N6 virus having been reported in George in the Western Cape was giving rise to concerns that another outbreak would occur in the Western Cape. HPAI outbreaks had in the year to date predominately been occurring in Gauteng, followed by Mpumalanga. In fact, 95% of all broiler breeder chickens in Gauteng had been culled in the greater Gauteng region. HPAI MITIGATION Mojo explained that HPAI was introduced through emigrating wild birds, with factors such as high rainfall, the presence of wetlands, the presence of irrigated crops and wetlands and chicken density adding to the risk factors for flocks contracting HPAI. She believed the most effective approach to ensure that HPAI does not spill over from wild birds to poultry flocks was to introduce strict measures to ensure wild and domestic birds do not come into contact, including by feeding birds undercover and removing large bodies of water in the farm's surrounding...

Manchi terribilmente, gigante buono.

Are you tired of the traditional networking methods that fail to bring real value to your business? In this episode, Nana interviews the owner of a business to business networking group that operates on an invitational basis. Discover how this unique approach to networking leads to predictable results from word of mouth marketing and real business growth. Clay Hicks is an entrepreneur with a portfolio of 5 different companies, including H7 Network and he is on the podcast today. KEY TAKEAWAYS H7 Network is a networking hub for the following values and principles, these are: Connect - Serve - Ask - Influence - Focus - Champion - and Win-Win. H7 network is an invitation only group to prevent those who just want to sell to the room from joining. Clay wants to build a community of people who really want to work with each other and grow each other's businesses. The key to transforming your business is not just having customers, it's the relationships you build with those customers, with your staff, with your team, with your prospects. Having people know that you're reliable, trustworthy, and good to work with is more valuable than any marketing strategy you can have. Connect, serve, and ask is the philosophy behind how Clay builds relationships with people in one on one business meetings. Simply put it's building a relationship, then giving them something they need, then asking them for something that you need. The connection part is the most important and that's why it comes first. The real success in networking is becoming a champion for other people and them being a champion for you. It's about finding someone who is intentionally active in networking your skills to other people, instead of waiting for those opportunities to arise. BEST MOMENTS ‘We're looking for a very strong community of professionals who want to grow their businesses, who also want to work with other people' ‘We had over 1000 visitors to our community all through word-of-mouth, not a single dollar spent on marketing' ‘I keep smarter people around me than myself' ‘It's not just who you know, it's how you know them' EPISODE RESOURCES Clay Hicks - CEO and Founder - H7 Network | LinkedIn clayton@h7network.com H7 Network VALUABLE RESOURCES Productize ebook Leave your comments on the show's facebook community page: https://www.facebook.com/Buildvaluebychoice Get your free valuation here: https://bit.ly/get-free-valuation Podcast website: https://infhorizons.com/podcast/ Don't forget to subscribe to the podcast and share it. Sam Lee is the Co-CEO and President of Cocrystal Pharma, focused on pandemic viruses and seasonal influenza to develop a drug that is cross-spectrum with a high barrier to drug resistance. Using computational data, as well as high-resolution X-ray data, their platform allows options for newly emerging viruses that also address potency and combination treatment options. Sam explains, "We just completed the Phase I study. In the Phase I study, we demonstrated the favorable safety and tolerability of this compound, CC-42344. We designed this compound for pandemic and seasonal influenza A infection. Particularly, this compound is highly sensitive to the avian influenza strain, potentially an emerging pandemic strain." "I think with antiviral drug development, you always have to think about three important things. One is the cross-spectrum, which covers the existing viruses. For example, in the influenza case, influenza H1N1, H2, and H3. And beyond seasonal influenza viruses are pandemic viruses, H5 and H7, and potentially emerging avian flu. So we want to cover all these viruses. That's a really important goal." "Once you achieve good potency and cross-spectrum activity, then you want to solve the pharmacology. It's going to be a once-a-day drug with the excellent drug resistance. Drug resistance is a really key contribution using our platform approach. Yes, we can do more for our sleep…First, I didn't believe it, and then I tried them for over 2 weeks and I fall asleep much faster…So the better and deeper we sleep, so better it will be for us. The Magic must be out…We understand that acupressure is working similarly to or better than acupuncture…We pick up 3 different acupuncture points and press or massage them for 30 to 90 seconds. It should not be painful, so we put quite a lot of pressure (like a weight of 1Kg)…In China, they measure the distance between the acupuncture points in Cun and that must be different for different sizes of people… 1 Cun is the width of the thumb, and 3 Cun are the widths of our 4 fingers. The first point is called Anmien…Behind our ears, (one thumb (Cun) below the middle of the ear), we go with our thumb, feel this big bone (Mastoid bone) and we go horizontal further, 2.5 thumbs (Cun) wide, until the rim of our skull… it have been just this corner/depression under the rim of the skull and behind that big bone… This point is not on a bone, it's so soft. You press this point on both sides, for 30 to 90 seconds, close your eyes, and relax. The next point is the H7 or Shen men…We go down the hand edge or Karate hand… to the wrist. Below the hand edge and 1 Cun up to the middle of the palm… You press on both arms at this point… The last point is the LV3 or anger point…We have two feet with big toes… the point is between the big toe and the next toe is joining the foot, above the foot, 1 Cun further down of the joint. Somehow, the LV3 has 2 different locations and we go to that location that I have described and not 2 Cun behind the joint of the big toe. He's a thought leader; futurist; guest blogger; super-connector; speaker; historian; and soft skills specialist. In this episode, Mike and SJ talk about his involvement in the business world, the H7 network, the importance of networking as a marketplace Christian, how SJ came to Christ, the importance of having a Christian community, how to integrate your faith into your workplace, and the importance of being a “giver.” Outline of the Episode 0:48 – About SJ Barakony and his involvement in the business world 6:25 – About H7 Network 10:37 – How SJ came to Christ 14:15 – The importance of having a Christian community 17:42 – How to integrate your faith into your workplace 23:45 – The importance of being a “giver” The Importance of Having a Christian Community God talks about the Church a lot in the Bible. The thing is when He mentions the Church, He means a community of believers. It is essential for our spiritual well-being to be a part of a Christian community so that we have people to push us closer to Christ. How to Integrate Your Faith into Your Workplace It can be easy to not see your workplace as a mission field. But, the people we spend the most time with are our coworkers. Our actions and our attitude need to back up our faith so that people will ask why we are different. This allows for a gospel conversation to be started. “H7. Children shall not be subjected to physical and mental abuse, nor to religious or political indoctrination by parents or others. The rights of children should be codified in a charter of children's' rights. While parents, guardians and elders have a responsibility towards their children (and vice versa) this responsibility does not give a carte blanche for them. Today most legal jurisdiction interdict physical and sexual abuse of children by anybody including parents. This is as should be. But what the law does not do is to prevent the political and religious indoctrination of children. Religions are allowed to conduct ceremonies like Baptism in Christianity, circumcision in Judaism and Islam and the thread ceremony of Hinduism. Children are incapable of understanding what is done to them in such ceremonies. Humanists should deny the existence of such rights for parents, priests and the like. This rule does not mean that children should not be inculcated in ethical standards. But these should be a basic non-religious kind of ethical standards such as those that Humanists promote. There is still no formal charter of Children's' Rights. The biggest impediment to the creation of such a charter will come not from theists who will not give up their right to automatically impose their religion on their children.” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/support

If you're like most people, there's a thing or two you'd like to improve. Maybe it's your posture or maybe it's the way your horse uses her back. Whatever you'd like to improve, it's tempting and common to just try to CORRECT the situation. If you're slouching, well, then just straighten up! If your horse's back is tight and dropped, do what it takes to get your horse to lift her back. Simple as that! Or is it?When we correct movement or behavior, we're contradicting what the nervous system is doing. That doesn't promote safety or trust. That means that the change is not only unsustainable, but can create additional problems. In this episode of Easier Movement, Happier Horses, I explain why it's soooo much more effective to CONNECT, rather than correct. You can improve posture, you can improve the way your horse uses her back or any other habit you'd like to change. Give it a listen and try it out! I have FREE resources to get you started CONNECTING and helping your horse improve. Go to https://www.MaryDebono.com/Horse. You'll get access to a hub of videos to teach you basic hands-on "moves" to help improve your horse, as well as Feldenkrais-inspired awareness exercises to improve your comfort, flexibility and balance too.Show notes for this episode are at https://www.marydebono.com/H7.
