What is Advent peace? Does it mean inner peace, world peace, or maybe peace with God and others? In this second episode of the Good Faith Advent series, Curtis Chang is joined by Good Faith contributor and author Andy Crouch to explore the true meaning of the peace promised by Jesus' coming. Together, they challenge common assumptions about peace, examining familiar Christmas messages through the lens of Scripture and the historical context of Christ's birth. By reexamining some familiar hymns and traditions, Curtis and Andy invite listeners to consider an Advent peace that acknowledges suffering and speaks into the hard realities of the holiday season—and everyday life. Rerun: Anne Bonny and Mary Read - the most notorious women to swashbuckle and plunder in the ‘golden age of piracy' - were captured near Jamaica by pirate-hunter Jonathan Barnet on 8th November, 1720. Disguised as men for most of their careers, they sailed (and cavorted) with Pirate Captain ‘Calico Jack'. But, when their crimes came to trial, they both avoided being sentenced to death by ‘pleading the belly'. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly speculate about how Bonny and Read were able to pass as men so convincingly; explain how they met in the ‘pirate republic' of Nassau; and reveal why ‘Robinson Crusoe' author Daniel Defoe may just be responsible for the enduring ‘Reader's Wives' version of Bonny and Read's friendship... Pirates have been a part of the public imagination since ancient times, but what is known about the women who chose that life for themselves? In today's episode, I will analyze pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read, two women who have become more mythical than factual. Joining me today is historian Dr. Rebecca Simon, an expert on all things pirates and author of Pirate Queens: The Lives of Anne Bonny and Mary Read. Hosted on Acast. This week, the story of 3 pirates unfolds before us! Join us as we learn all about Anne Bonny, Mary Read, & Calico Jack.
In this episode, a conversation with Francesca de Tores, author of Saltblood. The book is a work of historical fiction; it is a wild adventure, a treasure trove, and it weaves an intoxicating tale of gender and survival, passion and loss, journeys and transformation, through the story of Mary Read, a truly remarkable historical figure.
In this episode we sail round the Horn and back again as we look into the lives, trial and mysteries of the Naussau Pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read. Part of Calico Jack Rackham's crew, these two dressed as men, cursed, drank, fought and killed with their pirate brethren and for two months lived completely free, a rare thing for women in the Early 1700's. We dig into what little is known about their early lives, what led them to become pirates and how their two months as lawless pirates made them so famous they are still talked about to this day. Laura has Covid AND the Flu, she never does anything by halves. Arthur discusses people mocking the trans movement by identifying as helicopters and toasters and in the end, we are forced to admit that Anne Bonny disappeared sometime after she had been imprisoned on the Bahamas and we do not know how or where her life ended. So join us for this special episode all about these two pirates and so much more in this Jolly Roger Episode of the Family Plot Podcast!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/family-plot--4670465/support.
1/4: The Pirate King: The Strange Adventures of Henry Avery and the Birth of the Golden Age of Piracy Hardcover – April 2, 2024 by Sean Kingsley (Author), Rex Cowan (Author) https://www.amazon.com/Pirate-King-Strange-Adventures-Golden/dp/1639365958/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= Henry Avery of Devon pillaged a fortune from a Mughal ship off the coast of India and then vanished into thin air—and into legend. More ballads, plays, biographies and books were written about Avery's adventures than any other pirate. His contemporaries crowned him "the pirate king" for pulling off the richest heist in pirate history and escaping with his head intact (unlike Blackbeard and his infamous Flying Gang). Avery was now the most wanted criminal on earth. To the authorities, Avery was the enemy of all mankind. To the people he was a hero. Rumors swirled about his disappearance. The only certainty is that Henry Avery became a ghost. 1850 Ann Bonny and Mary Read
REPLAY on July 5, 2024 ORIGINAL AIR DATE Segment 3, July 29th, 2023 The Carolina Outdoors is now in session! On this segment, host Bill Bartee, takes us to the county seat of Carteret County, NC. Beaufort, NC, is spelled the same as a coastal town in SC with the difference being the pronunciation. Beaufort, NC, is the fourth oldest city in the state (behind Bath, New Bern, & Edenton) founded in 1713 & home to the North Carolina Maritime Museum Beaufort (NCMMB). Christine Brin, Associate Education Curator for the NCMMB, joins the program to talk about the exhibits, events, & education opportunities that the Museum offers. During the summer conventional and cane pole fishing classes are available to kids, enabling them to learn the a sport that they otherwise may not be introduced. Brin lets us know about the whaling exhibit & the traditions of North Carolina & whaling. Many times the locals will name the whale, including Echo, who is on display at the Museum. Other popular exhibits involve Pirates. In fact, the famed pirate Black Beard, grounded his ship the Queen Anne's Revenge in the nearby Beaufort Inlet. The opportunities during the summer are often on the increase due to the influx of tourists during the summer. However, the Museum stays popular year round due to the programming and seasonal offerings. August brings a lecture series on female pirates, Ann Bonny & Mary Read, as well as another on the Hurricane of 1879. Brin mentions the event commemorating the Pirate Invasion of 1747, when the town was caught up in a battle against Spanish pirates. Christine Brin also describes one of her favorite events. It's Pride Month, and I thought what a great time to talk about the other half of one of the most infamous pirate duos in history: pirate queen Mary Read. We don't know a ton for sure about Mary's life before she became a pirate. However, we do know that Mary had wild adventures disguised as a boy in the military before she ever took up a life of privacy with her girlfriend, Anne Bonney and Anne Bonney's boyfriend, Jack Rackham. Join me on this episode to learn the wild tale of how a less than half-a-year private career made Mary the most famous female pirate in history.

Between August and October 1720, two female pirates named Anne Bonny and Mary Read terrorized the Caribbean in and around Jamaica. Despite their short career, they became two of the most notorious pirates during the height of the eighteenth-century Golden Age of Piracy. In a world dominated by men, they became infamous for their bravery, cruelty and unwavering determination to escape the social constraints placed on women during that time. It's an incredible tale and one that has captured the imagination of storytellers for centuries.
Looking for a relaxing bedtime story? Join Geoffrey by the fireside as he retells a story from the history books. It's about Mary Read and Anne Bonny, two women who fled a society that gave them no opportunity to live a free life on the high seas, as Pirates. Love Night Falls?
Jack Rackham, known as Calico Jack, was a true pirate of the Caribbean. With his Jolly Roger hoisted high and his bonny lass by his side, Jack and his crew sailed the seas during the Golden Age of Piracy. Jack stood apart from other pirates, though, as he had not one, but two notorious female pirates on his ship: Anne Bonny and Mary Read. Like most pirates of the age, Jack and much of his crew did not live to see a ripe old age, but instead met their demise at the end of a short drop and a sudden stop. Anne and Mary, however, were meant for a different fate and their stories soon passed to legend.Support the show

On this episode, we are talking about not just one, but two pirate queens. It's tricky to talk about Anne Bonny without also mentioning Mary Read, so today, we're going to learn about two women who went down in pirating history as some of the deadliest pirates. Mary and Anne were two strong, independent women who made names for themselves by fiercely fighting alongside their male crewmates. They rose up in the world despite the odds being against them at a young age. They lived life on their own terms refusing to fit into the societal norms of their time. Segment 3, July 29th, 2023 The Carolina Outdoors is now in session! The Murder Mystery: "Only Murders at the Museum" is taking place on September 1st, 2023. Get your tickets while supplies last. Wardrobe for the host was provided by Charlotte outdoor store, Jesse Brown's, the Charlotte store Patagonia & the Charlotte dealer for Free Fly.

Way back in the early years of the internet, Ben Thompson decided to start a website. Each week he filled that website with incredible tales of guts, glory, and everything in between as he told stories of Ninjas, Vikings, war heroes, scientists, explorers and even the occasional badass dog! Millions of views, hundreds of stories, multiple books and decades later, Ben's beloved website www.badassoftheweek.com finally has a podcast! And of course, it wouldn't be Badass of the Week, if it wasn't weekly. Joining Ben Thompson on this audio adventure, to class the joint up a bit, is his co-host, former colleague, and long-time friend, Dr. Patricia Larash who brings degrees in the classics and philology from Harvard and UC Berkley respectively. Each week Ben and Pat trade fun over-the-top stories of badasses from history, mythology, fiction and wherever else they can be found. In season 1, they'll talk about Hercules and The Virginia Hercules, Voytek the Bear that fought for the Polish Army in WWII, woman pirates Ann Bonney and Mary Read, The Indian Warrior Queen Rani Lakshmi Bai who rode into battle with her child on her back, American war hero turned traitor Benedict Arnold, Roman Emperor Vespasian, and the very explosive Volcano Krakatoa, among so many other badasses. Now and then, they'll be joined by guests, celebrities and experts to chime in with insight, humor and even their own stories of badassery. Download. Listen. Subscribe. Follow. Tell your friends. Listen Again. Rate. And all that good stuff! New episodes of Badass of the Week arrive every week which is a good thing because we have so many stories to tell. We hope you check it out! We revisit the 'Pirates & Pipe Tobacco' this series in honor of Beau's new project 'Eversail Vol 1: The Pirate's Daughter' Please consider supporting this project at www.FindEversail.com Formerly ‘Heroes of the Bowl', The Half Bowl Histories series takes a look into the history, lore, and legacy of individuals, places, and events of interest that helped shape the world we know today for good and for ill. Here we get a chance to revisit some of the famous pipe smokers we've covered in the past and shift the focus from what they loved to who they were and the complexities of their lives. This week: Mary Read Pipe Question: I really enjoy listening to Country Squire Radio. I am sitting here watching Bilbo smoke his pipe at the beginning of “The Hobbit”. It made me think of a question. Some of us like vintage tobacco. What are the oldest, original, blends still being produced today? By family, like Virginias, Vapers, Balkan, etc.? Thanks to both of you for a wonderful virtual pipe club! - Ryan MillerListener Feedback:(Kane) Good Evening Gents, I'm currently smoking Northwest Trek out of my Missouri Meerschaum up here in good ol Peoria, Illinois. I must say that this blend is maybe my new favorite. I was hoping you could lead to some similar blends so to add to my collection. Also, it inspired me to go Squire Select on this but in reverse order. I created a cocktail that I think pairs well with the cocktail. It's kind of the Frankenstein mix between a Black Manhattan and a Brooklyn with some coffee flavors added in.2 oz FEW Cold Cut Bourbon1 oz Amaro Averna1/4 oz Maraschino Liqueur1/4 oz Mr Black Coffee Liqueur1 dash orange bittersI appreciate all that you guys do as you've been a integral part of my pipe smoking journey. Keep up the good work. - KaneAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
