It's gritty time! Show Notes: Run Time: 1:30:13 We start with some goofs and chats, and then we get right into it, telling a story designed to make you feel good about the world and humanity! All is well! A note on that brilliant cover that Adam drew and the name of the episode. During the episode, we posited just when the issue might land, and we were mostly right, but off by a little. Fortunately, our eagle-eyed listeners noticed an issue while Adam was livestreaming his drawing of that cover, which gave us the opportunity to shift the issue number slightly, clearing up any potential conflicts. So, that is accurately Issue #93 of Vol. 2 of Mystery Comics! Join us next week for an Editor's Note, and if you're on the Letters Page Patreon, you can join us this Friday morning at 11 AM Central for the live recording of said Editor's Note!
In this episode, discuss what I've been doing in February. I also share my frustrations about a tech fail and newfound thoughts on this product and delve into why I've changed my mind. It's important to discuss the positives and negatives of products I use and recommend because I've discovered something stupid that needs to be addressed, or I feel like I need to talk about it. So, perhaps this is, in part, a bit of therapy for me. And I'm coming off a rather super frustrated week where I feel like I've wasted my time. But, in the spirit of fairness, I'm all up for wasting my money in terms of experimenting and trying things than letting you know about it because that's the point of me doing this. I waste my money trying stuff, so you don't have to, but I digress. Also, I discuss a few things I did for the podcast, writing-related tasks, plus a marketing experiment I did this month.Podcasts, Books, and Tools MentionedCheck Out the Show NotesThe Previous EpisodeBook EdgeMailerLite*My reading of The Candidate on YouTubeSelf Publishing Journey's PodcastSupport the show by buying me a coffeeWant the podcast straight to your inbox?Host Your Author Website with SiteGround *Interested in the mini-course on how to outline a novel?Am Writing Fiction Community by The Authorpreneur Podcast (Facebook Group)My ServicesTry The Formatting Wizard Book Formatting Services for FREE **The Formatting Templates offered by my services.Le Villain Book Covers (Affordable Premade Book Covers) **My BooksMy Short Story, the LawnThe Candidate (Rookie Reporter, Book 1)Suspicion (James Lalonde, Book 1)Duplicity (James Lalonde, Book 2)Entitled to Murder on my blogEntitled to Murder on WattpadConnect with Me on Social MediaTwitter: @WriterADHayFacebook: www.facebook.com/authorpreneurpodcastFB group: Am Writing Fiction Community by The Authorpreneur Podcast Instagram: @authorpreneurpodcastYouTube: www.youtube.com/c/authorpreneurpodcast/videos* This is an affiliate link where I receive a very small commission if you purchase this product.** This is a service offered by me

Grab your fur coats and forks, it's time to face the biggest evil Champion City has ever known: common sense and a gun. This week we take on the blockbuster fail that is Mystery Men, a film that is SO much more relevant today than it was in 1999. We have heroes, we have villains, and we have corporate sponsors. Our team is a ragtag group of amateur heroes with questionable abilities: shovels, spoons, temper tantrums?, and a boy who can turn invisible when nobody is looking. The antagonists on the other hand, have lasers, guns, flammable hair care, and brains. Will the terribly mysterious Sphinx guide them on their path, or will their path guide them? All I can say is Erin and Brennan are consumed with RAGE that more people don't love this film.
They couldn't wait to stay here. A wellness retreat has opened on an island off the English coast, promising rest and relaxation—but the island itself, known locally as Reaper's Rock, has a dark past. Once the playground of a serial killer, it's rumored to be cursed. But now they can't leave. A young woman is found dead below the yoga pavilion in what seems to be a tragic fall. But Detective Elin Warner soon learns the victim wasn't a guest—she wasn't meant to be on the island at all. And they would do anything to escape. Today, we are chatting with Sarah Pearse about her second book The Retreat in the Detective Elin series. She wrote The Santorium which was a Reese book club pick. Can you imagine a universe where Agatha Christie and Stephen King collaborate on a book? That is exactly Sarah's writing style. Take listen to our fabulous podcast chat, y'all!

The door had been locked from the inside. The windows were barred, locked from the inside, didn't open and were made of brick. All the books were chained to the shelf save one, open on the table at a page entitled 'How to secure a room from the inside'. All the boxes had been ticked. And even the pen used to make the ticks was one of those ones on a little chain you get in banks.- John Finnemore, Souvenir Programme The post S30E3 – The Locked Room Mystery appeared first on Writing Roots.
Comedian Bob Saget's autopsy shows head trauma caused the actor's death. Saget's family revealed that officials had “concluded that he accidentally hit the back of his head on something, thought nothing of it and went to sleep” while on tour. The autopsy shows Saget had fractured his skull which caused bleeding on the brain. A security guard found the 65-year-old “tucked in bed” and unresponsive when his family, hadn't heard from him and contacted the hotel. Saget's key card showed that he returned to his room at about 2:20 a.m. Dr. Joshua Stephany, the chief medical examiner of Orange and Osceola counties, attributed Saget's injuries to a fall. The trauma caused veins in Saget's brain to rupture, which then caused blood to pool, creating pressure on the hemispheres of the brain. Stephany found no other injuries and ruled the death accidental. The actor had no illegal drugs in his system, but there were signs of prescription drugs used to treat depression and panic attacks. Stephany found no indication that either drug contributed to Saget's death. The autopsy report further found that Saget had an enlarged heart and that he showed signs of the coronavirus on a PCR test. Meet globetrotting psychologist and sleuth Cait Morgan. Cathy Ace had the great good fortune to travel the world during her corporate career. Which is lucky for us because her Cait Morgan mysteries are each set in a different location that Cathy has lived in or spent time in. The Corpse with the Crystal Skull is set in Jamaica and as we're all mostly confined to barracks these days, it's great to hear about sunny places far away, and vacationing with friends. In my interview with Cathy she mentions two mystery sites that she blogs for. 7CriminalMinds.blogspot.com features authors, including Cathy and two previous It's a Mystery podcast guests (Frank Zafiro and Terry Shames), answering questions about crime fiction, writing, publishing, and life. And KillerCharacters.com has a focus on cozy mysteries with a different author writing a post each day. Cathy posts on the 22nd of each month. This week's mystery author Cathy Ace’s Welsh-Canadian criminal psychologist sleuth Cait Morgan has encountered traditional, closed-circle puzzle plot whodunits in eight books, with a ninth being published in June 2020. This series of books has now been optioned for television by Free@Last TV, a UK production company. The plan is to present each book as a 90 minute made-for-TV movie, the same format used for the international hit ACORN series featuring MC Beaton's Agatha Raisin, which is made my Free@Last TV. Cathy's other series of books - The WISE Enquiries Agency Mysteries - feature a quartet of softly-boiled female PIs who solve quintessentially British cases from their stately home-based office in rural Wales. Her standalone novel of psychological suspense, The Wrong Boy, is set in Wales, and became a #1 amazon bestseller. Shortlisted for the Bony Blithe Award three times in four years, winning in 2015, she’s also been shortlisted for an Arthur Ellis Award for Best Short Story. Cathy was born and raised in Wales, though she now lives in Canada. And listen on Stitcher, Android, Google Podcasts, TuneIn, and Spotify. Except from The Corpse with the Crystal Skull Breakfast and a Body The conversation around the breakfast table was understandably muted; we’d all had a late night, and I, for one, was feeling the effects of a few too many G and Ts. My darling husband, Bud, surveyed the food arranged on the mahogany sideboard with bleary eyes. His more-salt-than-pepper hair was still damp from the shower, but he was already sweating through his shirt; May in Jamaica can be exhaustingly humid. “Anybody want another mango? Or this last piece of banana bread?” Bud’s tone lacked enthusiasm. John Silver shook his head above his coffee cup, then scrunched his eyes, suggesting he wished he hadn’t made such a rash move. “Thanks, no,” he croaked, with a polite smile I read as a grimace. He looked tired; wiped out, in fact. I’d first met him when he’d helped out with a family matter in Amsterdam that Bud and I had been looking into, less than a year earlier; back then he’d looked vigorous, and in his prime. Now? He’d aged. A lot. I wondered why. Maybe it was work-related; I’m still not entirely sure what he does – he somehow provides coordination between a number of secret service operations around the world…lots of opportunities there for stress, I’d have thought. He looked as though he needed the week-long break he was just beginning with us. “Anyone fancy a Caesar?” Bud’s other ex-colleague, Jack White, forced a smile; they’d served together in the Vancouver Police Department for years, forging a friendship that had endured beyond their respective retirements. Jack glanced at his wife with a wink, rubbed a hand through his rapidly thinning hair, and groaned.

April will make a fool out of all of us! Show Notes: Run Time: 1:30:04 This episode is the first one we've ever recorded remotely! If you can tell right away, apologies for the drop in audio quality. We'd much rather record in person, but the health and safety of Adam's family and Christopher's cat are too important to sacrifice. If you can't detect a notable drop in quality, that's because Trevor is an AV wizard! As a result of not recording using our usual setup, we aren't able to pause recording really, so these episodes are much more "uncut". Trevor still edits them quite a bit, but we attempt to push through and do as much "live" as possible. Does that make for a better listening experience? Heck, we don't know - we've never done this before! We talk a bit about social distancing and other current events for a bit, get to work around 8 minutes in, get to your questions a little bit after the 45 minute mark, and then talk about the cover for a few minutes starting just before the 1 hour and 19 minute mark before calling it a day. All in all, a worthwhile Friday afternoon, that we now deliver to you on a Tuesday! We look forward to unveiling more of the Multiverse for you soon!
It sounds like something out of a crime novel, and often times, stores such as these are. But the murder of Isador Fink was very real. His neighbor heard screams and called the police, but no one could get inside. After sending a small boy through a tiny window, they finally got in. There was no murder weapon which meant it wasn't a suicide, no other fingerprints, no money taken, and several locks locked from the inside. Who could have committed a seemingly impossible crime? Parse gets murdery! Show Notes: Run Time: 1:26:31 To be fair, Parse started out very murdery, and then mellowed over time. Today, we tell one of those early stories, and we do not hold back! Slight content warning on this one for (audio discussion of) graphic violence, as well as some drugs (not really drugs used, though - just drugs being generally around). Also, she's a jerk. Just so you know. Forewarned is forearmed, and with the amount Parse uses that bow, she's gotta have great forearms, right? At around the 47 minute mark, we get into questions. You asked them - we answer them! We talk a bit about the cover just after 1 hour and 16 minutes in, though you likely have already seen the cover by now. It's in these show notes! Thanks everyone for listening! We're getting close to March, in which the recording and episode release schedule starts to get more normal. Thanks for bearing with us!

Episode 122: Roll For Self-Care Length: 1:00:12 Show Links: RSS | iTunes | Stitcher | Download Episode Welcome back to Vox Republica, the Cardboard Republic Podcast! We post new episodes every other Thursday, with each episode being about 45 minutes long. Vox Republica is proudly supported by our Patreon. Consider contributing today! DESCRIPTION: It's been an eventful few weeks, both within - and especially outside of - the gaming world. And that has an impact. So, in this episode the Vox is all about self-care. We ponder the question "What games do you play to make yourself feel better when the world gets you down?" We then round out the week on a more upbeat tone by talking about The Castle, a new gaming cafe in our region and then review the crazy and chaotic dice fight for the West known as Boomtown Bandits. GUEST: None RECENTLY PLAYED GAMES - (01:15): Arkwright by Capstone Games / Spielworkxx Avalanche at Yeti Mountain by Green Couch Games Escape the Room: Mystery at the Stargazer's Manor by ThinkFun Kodama: The Tree Spirits by Action Phase Games Sushi Go Party by Gamewright QUICK TOPICS - (25:50): It's no huge secret that the real world has been hard for many of us lately, and it’s important to take time to breathe. This isn’t to say that you should disengage or bury your head in the sand, but self-care is important. We address how games factor into that process. Ryan ventured to The Castle in Beverly, MA, a new gaming cafe in the region. We touch briefly on his reaction to the latest gaming cafe in our area. REVIEW - (40:54): Boomtown Bandits is a 2015/2016 release from Breaking Games for 2-5 players of chaotic dice-chucking entertainment. In this 30 minute game, players have stumbled into a boom town in the Old West, and everyone is trying to ransack the town for the most loot. Through a series of short rounds, each player allocates their three gunslingers to different town locations, and then each of those places is resolved via real-time dice rolling. You want to be the first to land a successful hit result - and the the first to call it out loud - in order to secure that location's card. These cards both grant one-time effects as well as count as your money for the end of the game. It's quick, energetic, and though it certainly functions best at higher numbers, the game works well for 3-5. Today we strap on our six-shooters and visit the dusty town to see why that is. We investigate which aspects make this rowdy casual game so enticing, and which could use a little polish. (Note: if you don't see pictures below, you can view them via the RSS feed or clicking this link.) A Boomtown setup for four players After all shooters have been placed, they are revealed. Here, Blue and Green each have one gunslinger. Red has two. Red and Green rolled dice until Green called out a hit. They may remove either Red token, and then another shootout occurs Light strategy or abuse of power? Either way, the Train is off limits this round Boomtown Bandit cards, both with an single-use ability and a dollar value Some of Boomtown Bandit's sturdy components PLUGS - (59:19): We reviewed Millennium Blades, the CCG simulator in a box. We're continuing the Gen Con Indie Cavalcade effort - a list of all the indie games available at Gen Con. Check it out, and share it around! As always, Cardboard Republic YouTube videos and the BGG Guild are still ongoing. Subscribe to either - or both if you really love us. You do really love us, right? We’d love to hear from you!
