A historic castle on the north bank of the River Thames in central London
POPULARITY
In London, located on the north bank of the River Thames, stands a tower that the mere mention of the name inspires feelings of dread and the macabre and that is because this structure's thousand-year-old history is full of imprisonment, torture and execution. Many famous names in history met their final demise at the Tower of London. The Great Tower was not always a prison. It served as a royal residence for a time and is officially known as His Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London. Control of this piece of property usually signified control of the country. Because so much mystery, intrigue and death is associated with the structure, it is reputed to be quite haunted. Our infamous Lady in White is only one of the many spooks people claim to have seen or felt. Join us as we explore the history and haunting of the Tower of London. An elite group of ravens live at the Tower of London, anxiously monitored and lovingly tended to by a professional ravenmaster. Because according to legend, if these ravens were ever to leave, the crown of England would fall. But it turns out this “ancient” legend is a relatively recent invention.More on the one historian's investigations into the legend's origins can be found in this paper and in the book City of Ravens: The Extraordinary History of London, its Tower and Its Famous Ravens.
In the shadow of London's ancient fortress, where a thousand years of royal blood has stained the stones and the screams of the tortured still echo through the night, stands a monument to human cruelty that has become a prison for souls too tormented to find peace. The Tower of London—where innocence was shattered, where children disappeared into darkness, and where the machinery of death operated with mechanical precision for centuries—remains one of the most haunted places on Earth. The Tower of London is almost synonymous with the idea of torture, especially in the 16th and 17th centuries. When we think of this iconic historic site, the history of violence is one of the first things to come to mind, yet to what extent is this a fabrication of history? In this episode, Dr Catherine Jenkinson from the University of Oxford talks us through one of the latest research projects at Historic Royal Palaces, the question of how the history of torture is, and should be told at the Tower of London. This week is the third part of our mini-series on spaces we love. We'll be joining Assistant Curator Alfred Hawkins, who has chosen to take us into the Chapel of St John the Evangelist, at the Tower of London. As the most important space in the White Tower, the Chapel Royal holds huge historic significance in representing the Norman Conquest's power, control and religious dominance. Alfred explores how a recent project will protect this space of immeasurable importance, for generations to come. To view inside the Chapel of St John the Evangelist, take our Virtual Tour with Google Arts & Culture.
(Hosts: Christine and Kristin) Since the Middle Ages, the Tower of London has fulfilled many roles including hosting the Crown Jewels. It has, more infamously, also been a prison for many who were viewed as threats or criminals–leading to no shortage of fascinating stories tied to this property. In this episode, Christine and Kristin each share one of their favorite stories about riveting historical figures who found themselves captive in the Tower: Gruffudd ap Llywelyn (son of a Welsh prince) and Ranulf Flambard (the Bishop of Durham).
The Tower of London holds an incredible collection of historic graffiti, from the prisoners of the Tudor dynasty, right through to the 20th century. But there is still so much that we don't know about who made the graffiti and why. In this episode, we follow Postdoctoral Research Associate Jamie Inghram into the Salt Tower, a legendary prisoner tower in the precinct of the Tower of London. The Salt Tower is rich with graffiti including some examples that have never been investigated before. Jamie talks us through the very early stages of a new research project that is hoping to reveal the secrets of this history. This episode is part of a series where we're exploring fresh research that is taking place in our Palaces. We won't be releasing this sequentially, so these episodes will appear throughout the year. IN THIS EPISODE: With all the nastiness and violence that has taken place around the Tower of London, you'd probably expect to come across a spook or twelve… but would you be surprised to find out that it's also haunted by a spectral bear? (Ghost Bear of the Tower of London) *** In the winter of 1982, Alan Phillips was lost in Colorado's Rocky Mountains, in temperatures of -22°F (-30°C), in a blinding snowstorm. His survival and rescue was seen as miraculous… and then later it was found out that rescuers had just saved the life of a serial killer. (The Miracle Rescue of a Serial Killer) *** A famous silent-film actress suddenly disappears at sea. Was she the victim of foul play? Did she fall overboard? Or was it all a hoax simply to gain publicity? (The Case of the Vanishing Movie Star) *** Ghosts are almost always scary – but the most terrifying are those that become violent. The poltergeists. We'll look at five of the most violent poltergeist cases of all time. There are some ghosts you do not want inside your home. (Violent Poltergeists) *** Camping is always fun – getting together with friends or family, pitching a tent, roasting hotdogs on an open fire, telling ghost stories, hearing a snap of a twig in the brush behind you, seeing glowing eyes in the darkness, hearing animal-like growls coming from just outside your tent in the middle of the night… what's there not to like? Okay, so maybe camping can be a bit creepy, as we'll find out from a few Redditors who share some of their scariest camping experiences.
