Welcome to Episode 2 of our series on the fight for the throne of England. This week we are discussing the life and rule of King Stephen I. Stephen of Blois was born into privilege and was, partly, raised by Henry I in England. He was also one of the wealthiest landowners in England at the time. During Henry's reign Stephen swore oaths to Matilda as Henry's successor. However, when Henry died, Stephen was the first to cross to London and take the crown. He ruled for almost 20 years, but he rarely saw a moment of peace. Join us we cover Stephen's life, rule, family, wars and death. Hey there History Fans! We're back and starting our new year with a bang of a series. What happens when the King of England dies and has no male heirs? He tries to pass it to his daughter- or hopes that it would. In the 1100s there was an 18 yearlong feud between Empress Matilda and her cousin, Stephen, for the right to rule England. On the first part we are covering the life of Empress Matilda, from her first marriage to a Holy Roman Emperor, to her second marriage into the House of Plantagenet. We also discuss her relationship with her father, Henry I, as well as her children, the nobles of England and the English clergy. For our second week of October, we are staying in France to look at the life and legacy of Marquis de Sade. Most authors write what they know, and he knew much about debauchery, perversion, depravity and torture. Themes and values in his life made it into everything he wrote about. His books were also mixed with his political views and can be viewed as a kind of satire. Additionally, he was an aristocrat who lived through the French Revolution, gained seats in the new government, was sent to exile, was in prison for nearly half his life, carried on adulterous affairs and angered Napoleon. He also believed in a life where he could do whatever he wanted, whenever, however and to whomever. He is also the person for whom the term 'sadism" is named after! Disclaimer: this episode discusses perversion, sexual abuse, sadism and torture. It is not meant for children and listener discretion is advised. This week we are taking a trip back to Russia in the 1500s and looking into the life and reign of Ivan the Terrible. At the age of 16 he became the first Tzar of all Russia. With this came a lot of power and a lot of problems. Not only was he fighting wars with neighboring countries, but also the nobility who hated him. Over time he created intense tactics that would leave many to fear him. No one was safe from his rage and paranoia, not even his own heir. Join us as we cover Ivan's history, his impact on being the first Tzar, his legacy and much more. Nellie Bly was a very well known investigative journalist in the late 1800s. It didn't matter to her if the job was unsafe or against the social norms of the time; she had a life full of adventure. Throughout her decades-long career she: exposed conditions in factories, went undercover as a mental patient in Blackwell's Asylum, traveled to Mexico to write about the dictator, was on the front lines in Serbia during WWI, wrote novels, patented inventions and more. Her most notable feat was traveling around the world in only 72 days during a competition- which she did while traveling alone! Join us as we talk about these events and much more! This week we are taking a look at the life of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. He was an unusual king with an unusual rule. He preferred to live in the fantasy world in his head rather than in the real world. He became overly obsessed not only with Medieval German folklore, but also the composer Richard Wagner, whose work also centered around German folklore. He was referred to as Mad King Ludwig, and the story of his death is as mysterious as his life. Special Guests: Katelyn & Stefan Apologies for the background and mic noises on this one. Centered in an area of Pennsylvania, full of anthracite coal, is a town with no zip code: Centralia. But it hasn't always been abandoned. This week we are taking a look at another great ruler from history: Suleiman the Magnificent. He ruled over the Ottoman Empire from 1520-1566 and made many changes in law that benefited the people under him. He believed that tolerance of beliefs and religion were key to holding an empire together. He allowed people outside of the Ottoman Empire to take part in his artisan schools. His favorite wife was the daughter of a Polish priest. There may even be truth to the story of his heart being buried! Join us as we look at the life, reign and legend that is Suleiman I. This week we are delving into some unsolved true crime with the Villisca Axe Murders. In June 1912 the entire Moore family, as well as the visiting young Stillinger sisters, would be found brutally murdered by an axe. No one knows why or who executed any entire family. Some claim it was a random drifter. Others say it was a serial killer. Some believe that it was a rival of Josiah Moore. There's a long list of suspects and a lot of information with this one, so strap in. Guest Host: Matt. Join us on an adventure as we traverse their lives before becoming pirates and the hardships that they had to face. Edward Leedskalnin came to America in the early 1900s and settled in Florida in 1918. It was here that he built a mysterious structure, known today as Coral Castle. It isn't certain why Ed built. But even more mysterious is HOW. How did an 120lb, 5'2" man cut, move and install several ton limestone blocks by himself? Join us as we try to uncover the mysteries of who Ed was; who was this Sweet Sixteen of his; and most importantly: how did he build this alone. The theories are really off-the-wall on this one! It's the 1700s in London. Times are hard and money is low. What do you do? If you're like many, you might fence items for cash. If you're Jack Sheppard, you not only fence stolen items, you're arrested multiple times and escape from the "inescapable" jails, particularly Newgate Prison. His escapes included scaling walls with bed sheets, dressing in women's clothing, and climbing a chimney and going through 6 locked doors and a chapel. On September 16, 1890 the disappearance of one man may have changed the course of film history! Although we are taught that Edison created the first motion picture camera, it was actually Louis Le Prince. He created two cameras (1885 & 1887). En route from France to New York, in order to show off his new invention and receive a patent for the camera, Le Prince seemed to have vanished; his whereabouts are still unknown today. Come with us as we travel back to the 1880s and discuss the evolution of cameras, Le Prince's disappearance and some conspiracy theories as to what happened to him. I hosted another Game of Thrones discussion toward the end of September. This discussion featured Jess and Drac. Kester unfortunately couldn't make it. It was kind of last minute on a Saturday night and we were all pretty tired, but overall it was a lot of fun and surprisingly intellectually stimulating. Also, there are a few potential spoilers for Harry Potter and Mass Effect.
