Sometimes we have to sell people on the merits of games like Dungeons & Dragons. People like parents, principals, teachers, or even our own significant others Usually this comes in the form of telling them all the great benefits playing brings --learning math, reading, communication, teamwork, social skills, and more. D&D is also often specifically praised for its ability to help neurodivergent people develop needed skills, or to provide "therapeutic" experiences for anyone. But can it? Does it? If so, what can game masters and other players do to make it happen?Audio Credits:“Robot Motivation” by The Polish Ambassador, licensed under Creative Commons: CC BY-NC-SA 3.0"Call to Adventure" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3329893/advertisement

This week we are diving back into true crime with Adam Worth: the Napoleon of Crime! He started off as a petty thief but quickly rose to form his own criminal gangs in New York, most notably for bank heists. Eventually he fled to England and Paris, where he was followed by the Pinkertons. He would spent 25 years as the head of several international criminal gangs. His most notable crime was stealing the highly-prized Gainsborough painting of Duchess Georgiana. Though it's not known by many, his exploits would become the basis for Professor Moriarty, nemesis to Sherlock Holmes! Join us as we track his crimes, his life and his downfall. This week we are taking a trip back to the early 1900s in New York City to meet the city's first ever female detective: Isabella Goodwin. Goodwin spent nearly 30 years on the force, mostly working as a matron in the local jails, then as an undercover cop. She was so good at this that over her career it is believed that she helped to solve over 500 cases working undercover. Her most notable was the Taxicab Robberies in 1912. Join us for a look at Goodwin's career and how she helped to solve a case that made national news. In 1880 well-known astronomer, Edward Pickering, made a remark that his Scottish maid could do a better job than one of his colleagues. He then hired her on to help with the catalog he was developing, and it would turn out that his remark was correct. In addition, Williamina Fleming not only made a decades-long, high-reputation career as an astronomer, but would pave the way for more women in Victorian-era sciences. She would also head the Harvard Computers- an all-female astronomy team, tasked with analyzing and classifying stars in the late 1800s. Welcome to Part Two of the Sparrow Wars. Today we are focusing on America's Sparrow War from the 1850s-1890s. When insects are eating away trees, what do you do to combat this... introduce a new species, of course! English Sparrows were introduced to the American east coast in the 1850s. They even became a fad amongst amateur ornithologists. Expert ornithologists were against this invasive species, which sparked a decades-long academic "war" in the ornithology world. Join as we talk about the key players in this "war", the outrageous slanders against each side and the unlikely reason why the sparrow population in America began to level out at the turn of the century. This week we are going back to the Middle Ages for some bizarre music. First, we go to the early 1500s and visit a king who was presented with a very unusual gift: cats. But not just any cats, a piano made of screeching cats! We continue back to the 1300s and meet King Louis XI of France, who commissioned an Abbe to create the most unusual thing he could think of. The result: the pig piano! Last on out tour, we go to France in the 1100s and visit the Troubadour, Bertran de Born. He was a major celebrity of his time and would often write songs about war, soldiers and torture. Join us at the end where we read you some of his lyrics! We've all heard the horror tales of someone waking up in a hotel bathtub full of ice, only to find one of their kidneys missing. Well, those stories have to begin somewhere. Today we give you the real-life horror story of the Gland Pirates of Chicago in the early 1920s. Headlines and police reports detail the stories of several men who were drugged and woke to find their testicles missing! We also dive into the back story of this and how it led to illegal harvesting of testicles in Chicago in the 1920s. Warning: Though this episode is not graphic, it does contain talk of illegal organ removal and medical history that may be uncomfortable for some. Today's Weird History is certainly something weird! We are talking about a hoax so absurd; it doesn't seem real! In the 1820s two men claimed that the city of Manhattan was sinking into the harbor! James Graham, a doctor without a degree in the 1770s, touted that he could cure all manner of ailments from cancer to sterility. He is known as the “Prince of Quackery”. If he wasn't trying to cure you via an ‘earth bath”, he would also offer a trip to his Health Temple. Here, he would sell you all types of cures from nitrous to electricity and various elixirs. If you were trying to conceive you and your partner could spend a night on his excessively elaborate “celestial bed”. Presuming, of course, that you could afford any of these treatments. Join us as we discuss his life, his “medical knowledge”, his Heath Temples and his life post 1784. We are joined by guest: Kacie. During the mid 1800s laughing gas was all the rage, used at parties, surgeries and medical sideshows. Then along came ether. Then chloroform. Scrofula, much like tuberculosis, has been a very common disease throughout much of human history. From the 1000s-1700s one of the many cures for it was to see the King or Queen to receive their Royal blessings upon you. They would touch you, say prayers for you, give you a memento and say you're cured. Or were you? Join us for some medical quackery as we discuss this disease, some of the old ways to cure it, and the staggering numbers of people with it who spent hours in line just to see their Monarch. What do you do when the Pope issues a bull prohibiting you from joining a social club? Create another one of course! But this time you change up the format a bit. Today we are talking about the Order of the Pug; a progressive society club that cropped up around Europe in the mid-1700s. We'll talk about how it relates to the Free-Masons; what the initiation ritual was like; how progressive it was in the 1700s; and it's supposed downfall over time. When you think of superstar musicians, who comes to mind? Elvis? The Beatles? Jim Morrison? What if I told you that the first ever musical superstar was a classical pianist named Franz Liszt... During concerts in the 1840s crowds of women would try to steal his clothes, cut off his hair, fight over broken piano strings, secret his coffee dregs and wore portraits of him to the concerts. Palisade, Nevada had the distinction of being called "The Toughest Town West of Chicago" in the late 1870s. Passengers riding the train from San Francisco to Chicago would stop at Palisades on the way. There they would be "greeted" with frequent gunfights, raids, hangings and bank robberies. Passengers would flee back to the train in terror. But unbeknownst to the passengers, everything thing they saw was a hoax! It's not uncommon for an animal to be in the military, whether as a pet or as a mascot. It is uncommon, however, for one to have survived the sinking of several ships. Today's tale is about a black & white cat, dubbed "Unsinkable Sam", who survived 3 sinking ships during WWII. The question is: is this story fact or fiction? Come with us to find out!
