In this episode, we discuss the E in our RISE system which relates this week to our classroom environments. We discuss three must-have conversations to lay the groundwork for our class environments in the fall. The validating conversation, so that students and staff feel seen, heard and safe. We introduce the CLR - Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Teaching and Learning Movement and offer the tool of Rings of Culture created by Dr. Sharroky Hollie. The emotional conversation supports the belief that labeling and talking about feelings helps to relieve stress. We use "The Ladder" analogy of the Polyvagal theory as a way to measure and label our emotions. We conclude with the hopeful conversation that supports the concept of not feeling ok can be ok if you have the tools to help yourself. The body, inner voice, social, and environment tools in our RISE system can support this. Find our tools on Instagram @riseforeducators and Twitter @RISEforeducator. In this episode, our focus is the S in our RISE system, social connections. We discuss how to navigate a disagreement with compassion. We again refer to the work of Byron Katie, her website thework.com provides resources for a deeper understanding of her questioning process. We offer a tool we call "the 3 C's" as a guide for having difficult conversations while keeping relationships intact. The first C is to be curious by loosening your thought patterns using the questioning and turnaround techniques. The second C is for connection, seek to find common ground and state it intentionally in your conversation. The final C is for countering. This involves finding your voice by creating space in the conversation through using a permission question such as, "Can I tell you something I am thinking?", or "Can I tell you something I notice?" and following with an I statement such as, "I worry about... or I fear...or I believe...".
