Vicki is especially proud of the journey she took as a 16-year principal where she lead a school through a closing and merger, instituted a strength-based approach to instructional rounds empowering teachers to learn and grow from each other's strengths, and eventually led her school to become a nationally recognized Model PLC School by Solution Tree.  Under Vicki's leadership, Monroe became known as a student-centered school that values both student and adult collaborative learning. In 2020, Vicki Published Lead With Instructional Rounds: Creating a Culture of Professional Learning, a Lead Like a Pirate Guidebook, with Dave Burgess Consulting. This book shares the journey of a difficult school merger and how it healed and grew into a healthy school culture using a unique school-centered approach to instructional rounds. In 2021, Vicki was part of a 100 author collaboration to write 100 No-Nonsense Things That All Teachers Should Stop Doing and 100 No-Nonsense Things That All Administrators Should Stop Doing, both published by Pushing Boundaries Consulting.Currently Vicki trains and develops schools to implement her grassroots approach to instructional rounds with a strength-focused lens that empowers school staff to learn and grow from and with each other. She also works with Solution Tree as an associate to deliver professional development in Professional Learning Communities at Work, consults and leads professional learning with schools/districts through the transition and change process associated with school closings and mergers, and coaches/mentors school leaders.  Vicki enjoys connecting with a professional learning network (PLN) through Twitter, Twitter chats, blogs, and events.Key Takeaways:Use your staff meetings to share positive wise practices from instructional rounds. You must make special time to validate the hosts of your instructional rounds so that it builds intrinsic value.Write validating notes to classroom teachers who host visits. There needs to be a structured way to share results of instruction around with the whole staff. The power of positive talk only is what makes grassroots change from instructional rounds successfully occur.Never force people to participate in instructional rounds, but always continue to positively invite. You must explicitly separate yourself from the role of evaluator during instructional rounds for them to be successful.Use body language and other physical queues to show that you are facilitating, not evaluating.Start instructional rounds slow with ideas. Make sure that all comments are positive.Don't always focus on deficits when you're trying to make improvements. Focus on strengths so they can be leveraged.Initiatives need to be grassroots if they're going to be successful.Remember to Collaborate:Website

Featured Authors: Amber Teamann & Melinda Miller Featured Book: Lead with Appreciation: Fostering a Culture of Gratitude Here’s Why Every School Principal Should Read This Book About Appreciation for in the Workplace: Lead with Appreciation is great because it’s written by practitioners. Principals and school leaders are looking for ideas that they can implement right away. Look no further on how to show appreciation than this fantastic book. Not everyone accepts appreciation or desires to experience appreciation the same way. This book not only features some great tools like the enneagram, but it digs into our work-appreciation languages. P.S. You can find our interview with enneagram specialist, Kaley Klemp at theschoolhouse302.com. This book is littered with primary resources. The pictures are real, and they add an element of authenticity and reassurance. As a visual learner, this is awesome and takes away some of the mental wrestling that occurs when you are trying to understand what something would look like. Another great takeaway is that this book is written with most of the chapters focused on the months of the school year. It’s a power planning tip when we can pre-populate our calendar with action items months ahead of schedule. Let us know what you’re reading by contacting us at contact@theschoolhouse302.com. Jonathan Alsheimer didn't stop there and established a formed a relationship with Chris "Drama" Pfaff, MTV reality star and CEO of Young and Reckless to bring clothing to his "students in need" and worked to build student leaders in his school. In this episode of The Wired Educator Podcast, I interview Christy Whittlesey, author of the Dave Burgess Publishing book, It's Ok to Say “They”: Tips for Educator Allies of Transgender and Non-Binary Students. This is a powerful conversation between two educators about doing whatever you can to teach, care and help every student. What is a gender-friendly school? What changes should school districts make? What should school districts be thinking about and considering?  Christy Whittlesey, Ph.D. (she/her/hers) has been an educator in settings ranging from PreK-higher education for the past 17 years, and is currently a PreK-12 Fine and Performing Arts Administrator and a Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Arts Ambassador in Massachusetts. In addition to her work in the arts, Dr. Whittlesey regularly collaborates with school districts and organizations to update policy and lead professional development to create gender-friendly schools where all students can thrive, regardless of gender. Christy received an undergraduate degree from Berklee College of Music (2004), a master's degree in Music Education from Boston University (2009), and a Ph.D. with a focus on  Educational Research and Evaluation from the University of Massachusetts Lowell (2019), where she was awarded the Education Department's “Outstanding Dissertation Award” for her work researching the educational experiences of transgender and non-binary students. Shoutout Laura Steinbrink joined me on Episode 56 to chat about choice boards, but she’s back with an update. She is revising her choice board based on feedback from her students. Get all the weekly tips on this page. Home Learning Strategies for Primary Students That All Teachers Can Use! You are going to love the ideas from these two awesome kindergarten teachers. Together we will learn some home learning strategies for primary students that all teachers can use. Jessica and Christine, both kindergarten teachers, have been collaborating for over three years with their classes. They’ve set up a number of rituals for their kids so that they stay connected all year long. From the “Wish You Well” hearts to their daily updates on the weather and happenings, their kids know that learning happens outside of the classroom. These collaborations and technology integration during the regular class meetings have set these students up for success during the unexpected home learning that is now taking place. Jessica says this cross-country collaboration helps students better understand that learning can live outside the four walls fo the classroom. Their students already have a growth mindset and a foundational understanding about how learning works--giving them an advantage to understanding the new home learning approach. How Learning Has Changed on Opposite Ends of the Country California hasn’t fully stepped into a true digital classroom. Their spring break is coming up soon, so until then, they’ve been providing supplements and enrichment activities for families. After the break, Christine thinks they’ll move to requiring the kids to turn in assignments and do more targeted activities. New Jersey instead has stepped fully into focusing on ongoing learning versus just enrichment. They are working to keep grade-level consistency as well, which is extremely important. Jessica mentions that both districts are using similar technology; they’re overall goals are just a bit different. Why Supporting Families is Important Right Now This change has been hugely impactful on parents, so giving them the tools and support that they need to help educate their children is necessary. Jessica shares how her district is using Seesaw and Flipgrid to help provide spaces for the parents and kids to learn and communicate.  Also, the focus is on hands-on learning and experiences versus “book” learning. For the youngest students, we have to be careful with too much screen time. It’s also important to note that for many families, school is happening in the evening. They need to have access to resources even though they aren’t teaching during the regular school day. These technology tools were already in place before schools closed. This is not the time for new tools, use the tools that have already been proven.  What Has Been the Expectation for Time and Assignments? The goal for both Jessica and Christine’s districts has been to promote learning without expecting these kids to sit in front of a screen. They’ve put together the resources and materials that parents need to help their students learn through experience. The districts have made it known that consistency is a priority, but that there should also be a healthy dose of flexibility. They know that while parents want the best for their kids, they are not always equipped to teach their youngsters. Teaching Young Children From Home Framework Christine and Jessica walk us through their framework for teaching and learning from home with young children. Learn more about this framework and their approach in this post. [ctt template="1" link="Ea9Ic" via="yes" ]We have the opportunities to redefine our educational framework. If we choose tools and learning experiences wisely now, they can follow up back into the classroom.[/ctt] Recommendations for Teachers: Ensure a Method for Communication is in Place Create a Home Base for Information Develop Learning Connections Offer Purpose and an Authentic Audience Personalize Experiences Learn More About Innovating Play  Christine and Jessica have been working on creating resources for teachers to help them realize their strengths and how to build their communication systems. Think about the skills and goals that your kids have been working on and build out activities that help your students continue on those paths.  Christine shares the process they’ve created through Innovating Play to help teachers understand how their skills translate to the digital learning space. She builds a house with the foundation, walls, interior, and roof and explains how your classroom curriculum translates. Where is This Period Going to Take Us?  Both Christine and Jessica hope that the tools and strategies we are using today continue once everything is back to normal. The involvement of parents during this time and the increased engagement with students in a more dynamic way are invaluable.  They share how you can help support your students’ parents by reducing the expectation. Help them redefine their norms and make this period relatable to other experiences they’ve had. What you need is for you and your child to be successful. We are talking about some alternative ways to share professional learning tips and strategies through what has been dubbed as #PottyPD. My guest, Pam Hubler, is going to share how she uses #PottyPD to make the most of a captive audience. This idea has been seen in many iterations over the years--Learning in the Loo, Goo in the Loo (for Google-specific learning), Copier PD, etc. Pam shares how she uses #PottyPD on her campus to share tips and resources with her teachers. Pam also shares her Google Drawings template, how she curates with Wakelet, and how other campus leaders can make the most of a captive audience in the teacher's lounge, by the copying machine, in the hallways, and yes, even the teacher's bathroom! Shoutout Thank you to Michelle Spradlin Ward for her kind comments in our FREE Facebook community. Do you have a question or idea to share on the podcast? Leave me a message here. #PottyPD: How to Make the Most of a Captive Audience We’ve all been in the restroom at a restaurant and found ourselves reading anything within sight, appropriate or not, right? Well, why not take advantage of the few extra minutes teachers have to give them tips to add to their idea toolkit.  I am not the first one to use this strategy; there are many different versions out there. One name for this type of visually-driven bathroom professional development is called #PottyPD, which I started creating immediately after seeing Tara Martin (author of Be Real) share this idea on Twitter and her blog.  I just loved the name #PottyPD and had to borrow it! That’s what teachers do…no need to reinvent the wheel! #sharingiscaring As an Instructional Coach, providing professional development is a big part of my job. I also remember what it was like to be a teacher, with very little extra time to attend professional development.  Keeping this in mind, I decided to create a visual in the restrooms as a “teaser,” then curate a digital newsletter using Wakelet for teachers to access the same information later if something piqued their interest.  I figured this was a way to share information without putting too much in an email that would go un-read (TLDR “To Long Didn’t Read”). I’m not blaming anyone. I’m guilty of it myself.  Educators have a never-ending to-do list! #PottyPD Examples Here are pictures of my first year of #PottyPD.  You can see that I use a mix of icons, images, and screenshots to create my visual. Enough to catch your eye, read quickly, and make people want to read later.  How to Gather Ideas for #PottyPD Each volume of #PottyPD has a Google Form (see image below) attached that asks a few questions to guide what I share on the next one. I also do giveaways to encourage teachers to complete the form. I duplicate the form for each volume, change the image and title at the top, so it matches my printed newsletter, then link it to one Google Sheet so the data is in one place.  Each volume will have its own tab in one Google Sheet (click here for more information on how to do this).  I use the “What would you like to see more of?” question to help guide my next volume, which I usually do monthly.  I also add ideas to a Google Keep note, so I don’t forget what teachers have needed as I help out in classrooms or get information from the district.  Your school improvement goals and district initiatives can also guide you in the right direction. Just like planning for technology integration, you want to ask yourself, what’s the end goal? I use this question every time I prepare for professional development. How to Create the #PottyPD Poster Google Drawings! I love the flexibility of the tool.  It’s like having a blank canvas that gives you the chance to unleash your creativity!  Step 1: Open Google Drawings Go to File>Page Setup>Custom>Change the size to 8.5 x 11 inches  Step 2: Add anything you want to your drawing! You can see all the insert options in the image below.  I use the shape tools in Google Drawings A LOT!  These shapes can be used to fill color, text, images, etc.   If you want to use a border, start with a white square shape and make it a little smaller than the canvas. We could go on for days on how to use Google Drawings.  Check out the resources linked at the bottom of the post if you want to learn more!  Step 3: Create a Wakelet Collection I do this last, so I don’t put too much information on the visual.   Wakelet is an amazing curation tool. The image below shows all of your options.     Once you publish your collection, click the Share button and copy the QR Code to add to the top of your Google Drawing.  You might also want to add the shortened URL to the top in case someone just takes off a picture of it and wants to type it in when they get back to their room.  Step 4: Save a copy as a PDF to print for the restrooms Go to File>Download As> PDF I’ll also download it as a PNG image, so I can use part of the visual for the top of my Wakelet Collection (next step) and Google Form.  I like to use the plastic sign holders in the bathrooms so it can sit on a counter where you can still read it.  It also protects the page for sanitary reasons.   I hope this gives you some ideas for your school! Even if you are a classroom teacher, you can use this as a newsletter for your parents.  Let us know what you create and share your creations using the hashtag #PottyPD and #ShakeUpLearning. We’d love to see what you create!  Pam's Wakelet Collection of #PottyPD See all of Pam's #PottyPD collections: Wakelet collection of 19-20 Potty PD Wakelet collection of 18-19 PottyPD FREE Google Drawings TEMPLATES! Yes, I know you REALLY want to know how to put your worksheet into Google Classroom!  But, let’s take a step back and take a deeper look at the purpose of your assignment, the power of G Suite, and how you can go BEYOND substitution and a static worksheet.  Get ready to stop asking how to put a worksheet in Google Classroom, because “worksheet” is about to be removed from your vocabulary. Usually, this question REALLY means, how do I put a PDF inside Google Classroom so my students can write on top of it. Don’t worry. If you want the easy answer and to ignore the rest of this, I will tell you how at the end of this post. In This Episode: [00:29] - Kasey welcomes listeners to the show and reveals one of her biggest pet peeves.  [02:04] - Quick Shout Out to Jennifer Earls and Murray State University for being amazing participants in one of the Shake Up Learning live events! If you’d like to bring Shake Up Learning to your next event - Check out the Work With Me page here! [02:54] - Question from SpeakPipe: Koralie in Kuwait wanted to know if it would be possible to bring students onto the podcast, so they can share the wonderful things they are doing and learning.  Kasey reminds listeners that she has had students on the podcast and in fact, has an application for students to apply to be on the show. **Sneak Peak** in August she has another student interview scheduled. Check out Episode 7 where she chats with Camden, a 5th grader from South Carolina.  If you’d like to apply to be on the show, apply here! You can also apply to be one of the on-air coaching applicants for teachers and coaches here. [05:57] - This episode is sponsored by Pear Deck, the tool that helps you supercharge student engagement. Learn more about them here! Because you’re a listener, get a complimentary 60-day trial with no credit card required! How to Put a Worksheet in Google Classroom [07:18] - Should you or should you not be putting worksheets into Google Classroom? First Kasey defines a worksheet, and why you shouldn’t be using them at all. The term “worksheet” has become a bad word in a lot of education circles. Worksheets and packets mean different types of work to different types of teachers. Jennifer Gonzalez from Cult of Pedagogy did a wonderful post and podcast on this topic called, “Frickin’ Packets.” The post was inspired by a YouTube video where a high school student tells his teacher that if you want students to get excited about learning and touch their hearts, stop giving frickin’ packets. [10:04] - Kasey shares a confession about her own teaching that she truly regrets, she used to use packets and worksheets for busy work. As I have confessed many times, and in fact, literally confessed inside an auditorium in Kentucky last week, packets and worksheets were a mainstay in my classroom for the first few years. And that is something that I regret.  I am ashamed that I gave my students busy work so that I could finish grades or other tasks that piled up on my desk. I taught the way I was taught and in my ignorance, I blindly followed the lead of the more seasoned teachers on my campus. I didn’t know that I was doing a disservice to my students. So when I am asked this question, I don’t give a quick fix answer, I follow up with: “What are you teaching? What are your learning goals?” The answer will give me an opportunity to discuss alternative assignments that can make learning more dynamic for students. If your goal is to teach students how to complete an acrostic, GREAT! But I have yet to see that one defined in any standard. If your goal is to teach students how to fill in the blank from a word bank, GREAT! But I have yet to see that one defined in any standard. But if your goal is to help students learn and understand new vocabulary, there are so many more engaging activities to try. It always comes down to the learning goal. Not the packet. Not the technology. If you can’t tell me how the tech supports the learning, ditch it. If you can’t tell me how the packet supports the learning, ditch it! What is a Worksheet? [12:10] - Kasey defines the “worksheet” and different types of things teachers mean when they say worksheet.  For the purposes of this discussion, let’s define worksheet. Let’s take a closer look at some ways a teacher could describe a worksheet. I have a worksheet that I use with my students every year. Now I need to figure out how to make it work in Google Classroom. I got this cute worksheet on Teachers Pay Teachers and I want to assign it using Google Classroom. I have a PDF document that my students need to read and answer questions in Google Classroom. I teach ELL students who need to practice reading and comprehension on a worksheet. I have a PDF article that I want my students to read and annotate. I have a graphic organizer I want my students to complete. I have a special note-taking device for my students. I made one of those hyperdoc worksheets and I don’t know how to share it with my students. This list can go on and on. So before you berate me with your special exceptions, let me be clear. I agree with Jennifer Gonzalez, “Not all worksheets are created equal.” There are powerful strategies that can be done on paper or in a digital format. Those last few examples (5-8) are not what I would refer to as a worksheet.  Annotating a piece of text or writing is not a worksheet. A graphic organizer is not a worksheet. Advanced note-taking devices are not usually worksheets. Hyperdocs are not worksheets. For the purposes of this discussion, I am referring to worksheets or packets that are designed to keep students busy filling in blanks, searching for words, doing crossword puzzles, and other types of sheets that do not meet learning goals. And to revisit our original question about digitizing the worksheet so you can distribute the assignment in Google Classroom takes this question a bit further. First, if you are going through the trouble of taking something from paper to digital, why not use that as an opportunity to make it more dynamic. We also need to change our vocabulary, if you are lumping hyperdocs into the worksheet category, you missed the boat. You probably fell off the boat. [15:45] - When moving from paper to digital, make the lesson more dynamic! Also review your vocabulary and update it! Let’s begin to define our new digitized activities with new words. I talk a lot about this in my book. “If we are to ever truly move beyond technology as a substitution, we must get rid of terms that are rooted in old school, paper-based assignments: paperless, notebook, packet, worksheet, poster, cards, portfolio, etc. Vocabulary can limit our perception of what’s possible. An interactive notebook could simply be taking the paper-based notebook and images and putting them online in a presentation software. But again, that limits the possibilities. We need new, creative words. What if instead of notebook, a word that soon will have very little meaning for future-ready students, it becomes something new, like a “Learning Stream” or a “Learning Binge”?” Bell, Kasey. Shake Up Learning: Practical Ideas to Move Learning from Static to Dynamic . Dave Burgess Consulting, Inc.. Kindle Edition.  [18:08] - Use technology to create new learning experiences for students that weren’t previously possible. “But my worksheet helps prepare students for the test.” Maybe. And yes, I understand we all have test prep, but let’s be honest, worksheets and packets are a crutch. Ask yourself,  Will this worksheet help the learning stick? Is this worksheet better than hands-on learning? Is this worksheet better than discussion? Is this worksheet better than engaging students in new ways? -- That’s why you use technology! Not to save paper or digitize your old stuff. Technology is a tool that allows us to create new learning experiences for students that weren’t previously possible. What if you teach ABOVE the test? What if you can still help students prepare for that test and give them skills to not only pass but to think critically, create, collaborate, and use their creative skills? How to Edit a PDF in Google Classroom [21:46] - Kasey provides a “How to” on getting your PDF into Google Classroom and how to assign it. And finally, let’s move on to the question that some of you have been dying for… “Kasey, how do I get this dadgum PDF in Google Classroom?” -- (that’s my southern cursing coming out!) Okay, so you have something amazing for your students and it is a PDF document that you want to assign through Google Classroom. [22:49] - Google Classroom is a separate application where you can create assignments, not simply using Google tools in the classroom.  Occasionally, teachers ask this question and they don’t understand that Google Classroom is a separate application from Google. It doesn’t just mean that you use Google in your own classroom. Google Classroom is an assignment manager and classroom communication tool. (You can learn all about it in The Google Classroom Master Class.) First, save your PDF to Google Drive. Go to drive.google.com Click on the “New” button Then choose File - Upload Navigate to where you saved your PDF file on your computer and upload it to your Drive. [23:53] - Once you’ve uploaded to drive, you will need to use a PDF editor so that your students can work on the PDF. Most educators use KAMI. It was designed to integrate with Google Classroom. Next, choose a PDF editor and make sure your students have access. There are several applications that allow you to edit PDFs, even draw on PDFs, that are also compatible with Google. Kami - The Kami Chrome extension and Drive App is probably the number one recommended PDF editor in the education space. I know many schools that use it. It is freemium, meaning you can use some features for free, and it integrates beautifully with Google Classroom. DocHub is another application that some teachers use to edit PDF documents and save to Google Drive. A quick search will also help you find alternatives, but these are the two most recommended by educators. Once you have installed the Kami or DocHub extension (and it is installed for students), they will be able to mark-up and write on the PDF. Don’t forget to assign it in Google Classroom and attach the PDF from Drive. Be sure to give students directions on how to use the tool. You really don’t want to miss this episode! There are so many good nuggets of information on how best to use technology and G Suite in your classroom! Podcast Question of the Week [30:09] - This week’s podcast question is: What worksheets or packets do you need to rethink? In this episode of the Wired Educator Podcast, Kelly interviews Shelley Burgess and Beth Houf, the authors of the hot, new, best-selling book, Lead Like a Pirate. About the book, Lead Like a Pirate: Make School Amazing for Your Students and Staff: Are You a Treasure Seeker?  Pirates are on a constant quest for riches, but PIRATE leaders seek even greater rewards: amazing schools, engaged students, and empowered educators who know they are making a difference. In Lead Like a PIRATE, education leaders Shelley Burgess and Beth Houf map out the character traits necessary to captain a school or district. You'll learn where to find the treasure that's already in your classrooms and schools--and how to bring out the very best in your educators. What does it take to be a PIRATE Leader?  Passion--both professional and personal A willingness to Immerse yourself in your work Good Rapport with your staff, students and community The courage to Ask questions and Analyze what is and isn't working The determination to seek positive Transformation  And the kind of Enthusiasm that gets others excited about education The ultimate goal for any education leader is to create schools and districts where students and staff are knocking down the doors to get in rather than out. This book will equip and encourage you to be relentless in your quest to make school amazing for your students, staff, parents, and communities. Are you ready to set sail? Meet the Authors: Shelley Burgess   Shelley has served as an award-winning teacher, principal, Director of Student Achievement, and Assistant Superintendent of Educational Leadership. Beth Houf Beth is passionate about developing schools that encourage high levels of learning and empowerment for all… schools where students and staff are running to get in, not out! To do so, Beth seeks out fun and meaningful ways to interact with students and teachers so they are excited about coming to school. Wearing costumes, singing karaoke, or breaking out some original dance moves as she enthusiastically greets students each morning, or providing innovative  learning time and celebrations for her staff so they feel rejuvenated and excited about teaching is common practice for Beth. One of the most commonly used words right now in education is “innovation.” It seems to be part of any response to our collective anxiety over the fact that the way we educate children does not seem to have changed as quickly as the ways we access information, communicate with each other, or travel from place to place. Of course, before innovation was an education buzzword, it was a buzzword in Silicon Valley. It is easy to list examples of companies that are innovative — Google, Apple, Uber, etc. — but it is much harder to define. This leaves us to wonder, is innovation in schools just integrating more apps and touchscreens? If not, what is it? And if we want innovation in schools, how do we get there? In The Innovator's Mindset: Empower Learning, Unleash Talent, and Lead a Culture of Creativity (Dave Burgess Consulting, 2015), George Couros, provides a framework evaluating whether school practices are truly innovative as well as a guide for leaders interested in fostering changes in their schools that are both original and positive.
