Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Gail Lukasik grew up in the suburb of Parma. Her mother, an avid moviegoer, took her Friday nights to the local movie theater. That's where she fell in love with stories of all kinds. Her dream was to be a movie star, a ballerina or a writer. As luck would have it, she realized two of her three dreams. She was a member of the Cleveland Civic Ballet Company. And she's the author of five mystery novels, a memoir, a book of poetry, and numerous poems, essays, and short stories. After earning a PhD and MA in English with a specialization in writing poetry, Gail decided to write a mystery novel at the urging of her son. Destroying Angels, the first book in her Leigh Girard mystery series, was described by Kirkus Reviews as “a riveting debut thriller.” She went on to write two more books in the series, Death's Door and Peak Season for Murder, which won a Lovey Award for Best Traditional Sleuth. The Lost Artist, her stand-alone mystery, reflected her love of the visual arts and 19th century history. In 2017 Gail's memoir, White Like Her: My Family's Story of Race and Racial Passing, captured national and international attention. The Washington Post named the book one of the most inspiring stories of the year. After she and her “lost” New Orleans family appeared on NBC's The Today Show, her memoir reached the top 100 book on Amazon and led to her appearing in the short documentary film, History of Memory. The film won a Tribeca Film Award (Amazon Prime). Her section of the film, “The Secret Album,” tells her mother's story of passing. Gail's many of years of teaching on the university level segued into a vibrant speaking career. She's given numerous presentations at libraries, books groups, genealogical and historical organizations, and was on BBC World News, WGN-TV Morning News Show, WTTW's Chicago Tonight and CBC Radio Canada, to name a few. She's also lectured on diversity and the writing process at the University of Illinois-Chicago, Kenyon College and Northwestern University. Her articles about coming to terms with her mixed-race identity were published in The Washington Post, Mic.com, Salon.com, Independent.co.uk, Upworthy, Mis. Magazine and The Daily Beast. Wanting to return to her mystery roots, Gail wrote her fifth mystery, The Darkness Surrounds Us, a Gothic, historical mystery. Two historical events inspired the book—the 1918 Spanish flu and the rise of utopian communities in the 19th century. Still an avid moviegoer, Gail lives in Libertyville, Illinois with her husband. This week, in Libertyville, Illinois, the perfect family has the perfect house, in the perfect neighborhood. This all comes crashing down, one stormy night, when two horrific murders take place. It becomes a huge mystery, because family members won't let the teenage children talk to police. Was it the stoner son, who wouldn't join the army, like his dad wanted him to? The seemingly perfect, horse riding daughter? The youngest son, who has been in trouble his whole life? Along the way, we find out that Burlington Coat Factory is an awful place, and we all go there, that seeing someone toss something off a bridge during a night time thunderstorm might be the creepiest thing, ever, and that once in a while, time will loosen a murderer's defenses!!Hosted by James Pietragallo and Jimmie WhismanNew episodes every Thursday!Donate at: patreon.com/crimeinsports or go to paypal.com and use our email: crimeinsports@gmail.comGo to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things Small Town Murder & Crime In Sports!Follow us on...twitter.com/@murdersmallfacebook.com/smalltownpodinstagram.com/smalltownmurderAlso, check out James & Jimmie's other show, Crime In Sports! He holds the rank of professor, was co-director of the clinic and earned the “Master Clinician” title. Dr. Sellke taught more than 20 local orthodontists how to straighten teeth. He lectures locally and internationally on clinical orthodontics as well as another one of his passions - applying business principles to the practice of orthodontics. Other affiliations and accomplishments of Dr. Sellke include serving in: The Board of Directors of the Illinois Orthodontic Alumni Association (26 years) The Lake County Board of Health (16 years) The board of the Foundation for Orthodontic Research (20 years) He served as the president of each organization. He has published dozens of articles on orthodontics in professional journals worldwide. His text on the Bioprogressive Orthodontic Philosophy has been translated into four languages. Dr. Sellke lives in Libertyville. His passions outside of orthodontics involve either the mountains or the beach. He loves golfing, skiing, snorkeling, sailing, and working. (He is a workaholic who loves orthodontics!) However, he's no good at tennis. DON'T TURN YOUR BACK ON FRIDAY NIGHT, 103min., USA Directed by Mike Schmiedeler, Michael O'Brien From EP Tom Morello – Meet former gravedigger turned doorman at the Park Hyatt in Chicago turned frontman to his own band, Ike Reilly. At 40 years old he landed a recording contract with Universal and in true rock & roll fashion he bought his family a dream home in his hometown of Libertyville, IL. Ike took his band out on the road where they became what The New York Times called “one of the best live bands in America.” https://www.dontturnyourbackonfridaynight.com/the-film https://www.instagram.com/mikeschmiedeler/ https://www.facebook.com/mike.schmiedeler/ Get to know the filmmakers: Michael O'Brien: I introduced Mike to Ike and his music about 12 years ago…I showed him a demo/sizzle Ike and I had made for AMC that sadly was given a pass. Mike became a huge fan of Ike's music and eventually a good friend. It took a few years of persistent cajoling but Ike finally agreed with Mike's premise that his is a story that demanded to be told. Mike Schmiedeler: What he said I came as a fan. I knew how his music touched me and I also knew his story was so unique that it had to be told. He got his first record contract at age 40 while he was working as a doorman at a hotel. And he had been a gravedigger. Literally. But then he also married his high school sweetheart and had these 4 amazing kids. But then wrote some of the most insightful, provocative lyrics on life, death, money, lust, loss and hope that I'd ever hear. It's like he exists in worlds he should not simultaneously. Welcome to Bark & Wag 15 Minute Vet Talk – I am your host Polly ReQua. Today we are talking to Dr. Laura Brown, a Veterinarian and owner of Green Tree Animal Hospital in Libertyville, IL as we discuss Ticks. Yuck! They are out there and what can we do to protect our dogs? Dr. Brown, thank you for taking the time to talk about ticks with our dogs. Welcome and please let us know more about these gross insects? TICKS Ectoparasites are organisms that live on the outside of an animal. Ticks are fairly common ectoparasites of dogs (and cats). How often you see ticks on your dog and how severe a tick assault will be depends on the region of the country in which you live, the time of year (tick activity varies in warm and cool weather), the habits of your dog, and how and when you use tick control products. Some ticks can infest dogs that spend most of their time indoors, and even dogs that only spend brief periods of time outside can have ticks. How will ticks affect my dog? Ticks attach to your dog by inserting their mouthparts into your dog's skin. Many ticks also produce a sticky, gluelike substance that helps them to remain attached. After attaching to your dog, ticks begin feeding on your dog's blood. The places where ticks attach can become red and irritated. Although rare, ticks can consume enough of your dog's blood to cause a deficiency called anemia. Certain female ticks can also cause a rare paralysis in dogs as a result of a toxin they produce while feeding. More important, ticks are capable of causing many diseases in your pet. The disease with which most people are familiar is called Lyme disease. Another is Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Lyme disease can cause arthritis and swelling of your dog's joints, resulting in painful lameness. Rocky Mountain spotted fever can cause fever, lameness, and other signs. There are also other diseases that ticks can transmit to your dog. Your veterinarian can answer questions about the diseases that are important where you live. How do I prevent my dog from getting ticks? It is very difficult to prevent your dog's exposure to ticks. Ticks can attach to your dog when he or she goes with you on walks, hikes, or during any outdoor activities. The best way to prevent ticks from attaching to your dog is by the regular use of tick control products. Your veterinarian can advise you about the best product for your dog and your situation. Your veterinarian is also aware of diseases that are common in your area and can pose a risk to your dog. If you have a tick problem in your yard consider: treating the outdoor environment (be sure to understand what products you are using and how they affect the environment) making a landscape change to make the environment less tick friendly – this can be done by providing a 3 foot buffer between the lawn and any woods. Mulch, wood chips, or gravel work well, and help to decrease the migration of ticks into yards. ridding your yard of wild animals Often more ticks are present or they are more active at certain times of the year. Your veterinarian can tell you how to avoid locations where large numbers of ticks are found. Can humans be harmed by ticks? Ticks can attach to and feed on humans. The skin where ticks attach to humans can become red and irritated. Ticks that transmit diseases to your dog can also transmit many of the same diseases to people. It is important to realize that people do not get these diseases from their dogs. Both people and dogs get the diseases from ticks they come into contact with outdoors. Diseases, such as Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever, which have already been described in dogs, can also be very serious in humans. If you have questions about human diseases that are transmitted by ticks and how you can protect yourself, you should consult a doctor. DID YOU KNOW? While ticks themselves cause only mild irritation, they can carry diseases that pose a serious threat to animals and humans. Ticks can be prevented by regular use of tick control products. Just pulling off a tick can leave body parts attached to your dog. Ask your veterinarian about proper tick removal and tick control. Illnesses transmitted by ticks can case fever, anemia, paralysis, lameness, and other symptoms. People can not catch Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever from infected dogs, but the same ticks that bite dogs can cause these illnesses and others if they bite humans. Adult ticks can live up to 3 years without blood meal. Ticks live on three different animals during their life. Most ticks spend most of their life OFF the host (animal) in the environment. Ticks can't jump and don't "fall from trees" as most people think, but transfer onto hosts when animals or humans walk through long grass, bushes and brush.
