Shoots n’ Ladders is a wrestling podcast that focuses on the over-the-top shenanigans that were happening in the WWF/WWE 30 years ago in the 1990s. We’re watching old content including Raw, Superstars, pay-per-views, as well as anything else we can scrounge up. Our mission is to uncover any evidence to prove that the Montreal Screwjob was (or wasn’t) a work while we laugh at the gimmicks and storylines that shaped our childhood. Be careful though, we may dip our toes into current events!
This week we're talking about the October 16 1993 episode of WWF Superstars and the October 18, 1993 episode of Monday Night Raw. We met Jeff Jarrett and get some Macho Man Crush drama.
This week we're talking about the October 7 1993 episode of Superstars and the October 9 1993 episode of Monday Night Raw. We have a lot of tag teams to talk about, some Doink business, Jerry the King Lawler things, Ludwig Borga confronts Lex Luger, and tension stirs between Macho Man and Crush.
We're talking about the impending Doink face turn, Crush and Macho Man still can't get along, the Battle Royale to determine the Intercontinental Championship match where Razor Ramon and Rick Martel win and will face each other next week, and so many Heavenly Bodies matches. We go off on what was cringy enough to be embarrassed about back in 1993 if our parents caught us watching wrestling, and the thin blurry line separating carnie culture from wrestling culture.
Here we see ourselves at week 38 of the 1993 WWF/WWE programming year. New feuds are emerging as The Undertaker sneaks up behind Yokozuna in the dark, and Crush dials up Macho Man to chew him out over the phone - true 90's style. The model Rick Martel returns to Monday Night Raw to face the undefeated Native American Tatanka while Barry Horowitz and The 1-2-3 Kid somehow find themselves in a tag team title match against The Quebecers. Jimmy Snuka returns for a hot minute, we talk about how great the razor's edge is, how much Vince McMahon loves money, Mr. Perfect's impeccable style, and lastly (but never least) Shawns Michaels is forced to leave the building for a 6 week suspension. We go over the kayfabe and real (maybe?) reasons why. Jen's still not over it.
This week on the September 18th 1993 episode of Superstars and the September 20th episode of Monday Night Raw we saw Bret Hart and Scott Steiner wrestle, though not each other. We talk a little about these pretty uneventful episodes and a little about the first episode of Mr. McMahon, the Vince McMahon documentary on Netflix.
We're going over the September 11, 1993 episode of Superstars (3 REAL matches here folks!) and the September 13, 1993 episode of Monday Night Raw where The Quebecers beat the Steiner Brothers for the tag team belts.
This week we're going over the September 4 episode of Superstars of Wrestlings, and there's no Raw this week so it's a light episode. And we talk a little about Sid Eudy, RIP.
Will Lex Luger defeat Yokozuna FOR AMERICA? WTF is an RIP match and will Giant Gonzalez survive the Undertaker's wrath? Will Mr. Perfect beat Shawn Michaels for the IC belt? And will Breat Hart finally shut up Jerry Lawler or will there be shenanigans involved? These questions and so many more will be answered in this episode of Shoots n' Ladders about the strange 1993 Summerslam.
We're skipping ahead for the 30th anniversary of Wrestlemania 10! On this special episode we're chatting about WMX shenanigans, the two amazing matches and... the rest. We got your Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart in the first of the Hart brother matches, the iconic intercontinental ladder match with Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon, two WWF title matches both featuring Yokozuna, some Macho Man and Crush action, and a lot of additional weirdness.
Oof, this week. We're calling to action... something for Lex Luger, we're being grossed out by Bastion Booger, we're watching Tino Santana's last match, we have a six man tag featuring The Bushwackers, and there's a contract signing.
Macho Man vs. Doink ft. Mini Macho, Lex Luger's high school struggles, and Jim Cornette enters the chat as we gear up for Summerslam. Brought to you by Icopro.
This week we're taking the Lex Express time machine back to the July 26 1993 episode of Superstars and the July 28 1993 episode of Monday Night Raw. We see Hacksaw Jim Duggan's last appearance on Superstars, we have some Jack Tunney telegrams, there's a Lex Express check in, Money Inc vs. Steiners yet again, Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Bret Hart with some some elder bullying on the side, Doink, Macho Boy and more.
The Tiny Tim Incident with Jerry Lawler. The Lex Express with Lex Luger. The never ending Money Inc. Steiner Brothers Feud. The top rated WWF match of the year featuring Marty Jannetty and Shawn Michaels. We have a lot to talk about.
This week we're discussing the July 10, 1993 episode of Superstars and the July 12, 1993 episode of Monday Night Raw - both featuring Crush in the main event. Crush vs. Doink, Crush vs. Yokozuna, ultimately Crush is crushed and Macho Man Randy Savage goes to the rescue. We're gearing up towards Summerslam and we get some Jerry Lawler/Bret Hart promos and of course some Lex Express anticipation.
It's here folks: The Stars and Stripes Challenge. Will someone be able to slam Yokozuna and restore the integrity of America? Spoiler - yes, yes it will all be ok. Lex Luger trades in his foil cape for a helicopter and an American flag shirt and the rest is history. All that and more when we discuss this week's matches and shenanigans including those with Crush, The 123-Kid, Mr. Perfect. Bam Bam Bigelow, the Undertaker and more. We even get a Bret Hart sighting!
We watched the June 26, 1993 episode of WWF Superstars and the June 28 1993 episode of Monday Night Raw as we gear up for the Stars and Stripes Challenge of the century. Our big exciting matches this week include Virgil vs. Bastion Booger, Crush vs. Bastion Booger and an Intercontinental Championship match with Kamala and Shawn Michaels with a side of Diesel. The cream of the crop rises to the top!
Did you miss us? We're back on the 1993 WWF/WWE train with some more King of the Ring fallout, the festering feud between Marty Jannetty and every Doink, the premiere of everyone's favorite Bastion Booger, and finally we get the $10,000 match-up between Razor Ramon and The 123 Kid. This episode is pretty fluid and chatty as we get back into it. Enjoy!
Hulkamania is dead. Yokozuna is champion. Bret Hart is on top. Jerry Lawler is a Burger King. Marty Jannetty battles Doink. This week begs the following questions: Was The Undertaker above the 1993 KOTR? Does he not need the bitchassness? Who and where is L.A. Gore? How much money would be enough money for you to step in the ring with Razor Ramon and get your ass handed to you? Will America be ok after the death of Hulkamania? All that and more on this episode of Shoots n' Ladders, now back to the rewatch.
Jack finally finds Ace, and there's a new head writer over at DWL. And is anyone worse than Carol?
This week on Heels Ace goes on an adventure, Jack and Stacy are still navigating their strained relationship, and the DWL has some story-line figuring out to do.
Grab your bunny ears, your pig snout, or strap a horse hair tail to your ass and listen in because we're diving deep into the first episode of the second season of the Starz original Heels - Ten Bell Salute. We have so many questions about Jack, Ace, Wild Bill and Willie that we can't wait to have answered, but until then we'll speculate away, like we do. TW - this episode contains a lot of talk about suicide and loss.
The first televised King of the Ring is a pillar of the WWF New Generation PPVs, or at least we think so. Listen in for some hot (lukewarm?) takes of the 90's wrestling shenanagins that transpired at KOTR '93 including three awesome Bret Hart matches, and the death of Hulkamania in the 90s at the hands of Yokozuna.
This week its all about hyping up King of the Ring on the June 5th 1993 episode of Superstars and the June 7th 1993 episode of Monday Night Raw. We have a new Intercontinental Champ Shawn Michaels who has a new very tall bodyguard, a King's Court with Jerry Lawler interviewing Yokozuna and Mr. Fuji, and some fun tag action featuring Billy Gunn and Ric Steiner vs. Fatu and IRS.
This week we see Intercontinental Champ Marty Jannetty defend his title against Bam Bam, with Sherry and Luna in their sides. We also get some more monetary offers from Razor Ramon to The 123 Kid for a rematch.
We're in the throws of the Razor Ramon/123 Kid rivalry while trying to count Doinks. This episode goes on a lot of tangents so listen in to our thoughts on Adam Bomb, Vince McMahon, and what WWF silliness might be insensitive by today's standards.
This is the Monday Night Raw we've been waiting for! Razor Ramon gets pinned by the "Kid" and Marty Jannetty returns in disguise to challenge Shawn Michaels for the Intercontinental title. We see the debut of the Smoking Gunns and a couple King of the Ring qualifying matches. And is the the last we'll see of Giant Gonzales? Not sure but we do know that anything can happen in the World Wrestling Federation.
This week we see a 6 man tag with Money Inc and Mr. Hughes vs. The Nasties and Kamala, and two KOTR Qualifying matches. The real draw is the street fight between Shawn Michaels and Mr. Perfect that results in Fink's caddy being damaged, and the lumberjack match to follow.
We've got your King of the Ring qualifying match between Mr. Perfect and Doing, some Headshrinkers action ft. Captain Lou Albano, and a heated Intercontinental title match between Hacksaw Jim Duggan and HBK that ends in a one-man protest. Oh and in case you forgot, Hulk Hogan is still the champion.
We're watching the April 24, 1993 episode of WWF Superstars and the April 26, 1993 episode of Monday Night Raw, with our new commentator Bobby Heenan! We see Crush, Lex Luger, Mr. Perfect, The Steiner Brothers, Shawn Michaels, Typhoon and more in action but the real draw is the public wedding proposal that happens as the main event during Monday Night Raw. We also get to see into the Wrestlemania Brunch and the attack heard around the world when Lex Luger attacked then WWF Champion Bret Hart with his metal forearm.
This week on Shoots n' Ladders (A 90's wrestling podcast) Pat and Jen argue about how boring or exciting the featured content was and discuss matches such as Owen Hart vs. Bam Bam Bigelow ft. an unfortunate injury, Razor Ramon vs. Virgil, and Money Inc. vs. The Beverly Brother for the tag titles. We also get some fun interviews and promos with Bret Hart, Luna Vachon and more. Come for the Slim Jims and stay for the ICOPRO.
Friar Ferguson and Mr. Hughes enter the chat this week on the April 12, 1993 episode of Monday Night Raw and the April 10, 1993 episode of WWF Superstars. There's a fun match between Scott Steiner and IRS, as well as the first unofficial impromptu bra and panties match between Sensational Sherri and Luna Vachon. We go off on a real tangent about how many gimmicks and occupations exist in the roster in WWF/E 1993 and who would win the battle of Macho-ness between Macho Man Randy Savage and the oozer of machismo Razor Ramon.
"Live" from Caesar's Palace... this week is a bunch of pre and post Wrestlemania silliness. We banter about future feuds that we're excited about, misophonia, and the April 3, 1993 episode of Superstars and the April 5, 1993 episode of Monday Night Raw featuring Macho Man, Jerry Lawler, Bob Backlund, the Steiner Brothers, Tatanka, Bam Bam Bigelow, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Lex Luger and more.
What is there to say about Wrestlemania 9... not too much that hasn't been said before but we're going there anyway. Come along and prepare to be disappointed by the Undertaker Giant Gonzales match, Hulk Hogan's unexpected WWF title win, Bret Hart's loss to Yokozuna, and Tatanka's strange victory against Shawn Michaels. At least we get some Luna Vachon.
We're getting hyped up for the impending Wrestlemania 9 with the March 27 1993 episode of WWF Superstars and a special March 28 1993 March to Wrestlemania. Jack Tunney even shows his face at the contract signing between Yokozuna and Bret Hart that ends disastrously. We also see in action Macho Man, Money Inc, Mr. Perfect, Tatanka and more as we gear up and get thankful for WM9 to finally happen.
It's the week before the week before Wrestlemania 9, and we hope you've called your local cable providers because you do NOT want to miss the opportunity to witness Hulk Hogan's return with the Mega Maniacs, or Bret Hart defend his championship against Yokozuna. We watch the March 20, 1993 episode of Superstars and the March 22, 1993 episode of Monday Night Raw and see some ridiculous promos - including a Lex Luger and Mr. Perfect mirror-off... a couple of ridiculous matches (including the return of The Bushwackers)... and a whole lot of jobber matches. You're not gonna want to miss this.
The week we continue to travel down the long road to Wrestlemania 9 and watch a bunch of matches and promos featuring Tatanka, Yokozuna, Crush, Papa Shango, Bob Backlund, The Nasty Boys, The Headshrinkers, Lex Luger, Hulk Hogan and more.
Beefcase, breifcake, briefcase, suitcase... what's the difference really? This week our word is WHY as we drag our feet down the long road to Wrestlemania 9 and cover the March 6, 1993 episode of Superstars and the March 8, 1993 episode of Raw. We discuss the shenanigans from Superstars such as Lex Luger, Mr. Perfect, Rick Martel, The Steiner Brothers, The Mega Maniacs, Bret Hart and Tatanka. We also question the claim that the beefcase was filled with 100 lbs of steel, or perhaps multiple bricks.
This week we're talking about the February 27, 1993 episode of WWF Superstars and the March 1, 1993 episode of Monday Night Raw featuring Horrible Elvis. We see Bret Hart defend his belt against Fatu, Doink destroy Koko B Ware and Big Boss Man, and appearances from your friends Lex Luger, Yokozuna and The Steiner Brothers. We're traveling right down that road to Wrestlemania, one jobber match at a time.
This week we talk about the February 20, 1993 episode of Superstars of Wrestling and the February 22, 1993 episode of Monday Night Raw - where we get treated to the return of a deflated Hulk Hogan as he supports his bionic friend Brutus the Barber Beefcake and brings Jimmy Hart into the newly formed Mega Maniacs. Other than that it's squash match central, but we have fun. This is fun.
This week is a doozy, we have lots of Giant Gonzales sightings, Tatanka remains undefeated in his non-title match with Shawn Michaels, a wild interview with Brutus the Barber Beefcake and Vince McMahon, a 16 man Battle Royal that goes into the crowd, and a savage beating of Brutus' face by IRS. Listen in to see what Pat would do first if he had access to a time machine.
On this episode of Shoots n' Ladders we react to a little current wrestling and chat about the recent Elimination Chamber and everyone's current favorite underdog Sami Zayn. Also we remark on how amazing the Montreal fans are. Then we travel back to 1993 where we belong and talk about a perfect Mr. Perfect promo, and of course the big story of the week - Jim Duggan's absolute destruction at the hands (or ass) of Yokozuna.
Words of the week - Anticipation and Fresh. Also our winner, loser, AND best dressed all go to Brutus the Barber Beefcake. We watch an episode of Superstars (1/30/93) and an episode of Raw (2/1/93) and discuss the hijinx of Doink, Tatanka, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Yokozuna, Typhoon and Ted Debase.
Here it is, the recap of the Monday Night Raw Loser Leaves Town match between Perfect and Flair, not to mention Macho Man Randy Savage vs. the Repoman in a "give me my hat back" match. We also cover an episode of Superstars that is all about getting you to call your local cable provider to order the Royal Rumble. Fun stuff!
Here we go! Getting down to it with your boys Bret Hart, Razor Ramon, Tatanka, Yokozuna, and never forget Marty Jannetty and his epic tights. Also will Crush be ok after a devastating clown attack?
We're chatting about the 1993 Royal Rumble, the last time we'll hear Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan together at a WWF/WWE pay-per-view event. This is the last Rumble of the Golden Era as the New Generation rolls on in. We have your Yokozuna, Bret Hart, Razor Ramon, Shawn Michaels, Macho Man Randy Savage and never forget The Narcissist Lex Luger! Hope you called your local cable providers because this is one event you don't wan to miss.
We go over the second week of WWE/WWF in 1993 which includes a Superstars episode (Kamala is a man!), and the debut of Monday Night Raw! We've got your overview of matches and promos which includes the likes of The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, and Razor Ramon.
We review the first Superstars of 1993 with anticipation of the Royal Rumble, the year to come, and next week's debut of Monday Night Raw!
Here's our WWE/WWF 1992 rundown! We go through it all, give out some imaginary awards and get excited for our new podcast Shoots 'n Ladders. It will be a lot of the same banter with a little more focus, starting where we left off here. We'll be searching for clues to find out whether the Montreal Screw Job was a work by combing through old programming week to week. Listen to our review of this very strange and interesting year in wrestling and then check out our new project Shoots 'n Ladders!
Hey yo, we're back! After a little hiatus we are getting back to the damn thing, we have some technical hiccups, go off on some tangents, and let you know our plans for the future of this endeavor. (Spoiler - we're investigating Montreal one wrestling program at a time.) We also talk a little about the last two weeks of WWF/E wrestling for 1992.
We're chatting about the last week of November 1992 and the first two weeks of December '92.
