Jen Psaki reports on the firing by Pete Hegseth's Pentagon of the editor-in-chief of the Stars and Stripes military newspaper, as well as one of its reporters, and considers the broader context of the Trump administration's attacks on the free press and Hegseth's particular battle against independent media. Erik Slavin, now former editor-in-chief of Stars and Stripes, and Lara Korte, former Middle East reporter for Stars and Stripes join to discuss with Jen Psaki. A report from the Center for American Progress shows that despite costing a huge amount of money and making huge human resource demands, Donald Trump's National Guard deployment to U.S. citites like Washington, D.C. has not done what Trump promised. Neera Tanden, president and C.E.O. of the Center for American Progress talks with Jen Psaki about the the evidence that Donald Trump's deployment of the National Guard to fight crime in U.S. cities has been a giant waste of taxpayer money that has not reduced the rate of violent crime in those cities. Rob Flaherty and Jesse Lehrich , co-hosts of the "Nobody Knows Anything” show, discuss the week's news in politics with Jen Psaki. New U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods take effect as Quebec's separatist movement pauses its independence push amid growing tensions with Washington. The U.S. Supreme Court has temporarily cleared the way for work to continue on President Donald Trump's controversial White House ballroom project. The Pentagon has fired the editor-in-chief of Stars and Stripes, raising concerns about the military newspaper's editorial independence. And Somali piracy is resurging, with armed men seizing an Iran-linked oil tanker in one of a growing number of attacks in the region.
Today on The Jimmy Barrett Show, Jimmy reacts to the bizarre trend of people shooting homeless individuals with water guns and what it says about common sense and personal responsibility. He also dives into why so many young Americans seem to have a shaky grasp of basic U.S. history, and whether you tuned in for the America 250 celebration. Plus, what's driving the slowdown in home sales, and what it means if you're thinking about buying or selling a home.
REWIND TIME.Hulk Hogan was out the door, but Vince McMahon needed a new American Hero for his audience to cheer for against the WWF Champion, Yokozuna. Enter Lex Luger, who made his babyface turn on the deck of the U.S.S. Intrepid in New York City. With multiple professional wrestlers, and even some professional athletes, failing to bodyslam Yokozuna, Luger became the hero we all deserved. I guess. Luger never won the championship, but this day marked the beginning of the Lex Express. For generations of service members, Stars and Stripes has been known as the soldiers' newspaper, funded by the U.S. government but protected by law to report independently on the military it covers. Now that independence is facing renewed scrutiny. Signals from the Pentagon about refocusing the paper's coverage and internal policy shifts have raised concerns among journalists and press freedom advocates that the Defense Department may be seeking to reshape the mission of one of the world's most unusual news organizations. President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth are demanding “more patriotic” coverage of the widening war in Iran. On this week's On the Media, hear how the Pentagon is cracking down on its publication, Stars and Stripes. Plus, fake AI images of the Iran war are proliferating, and they're getting more convincing. [01:00] Host Micah Loewinger breaks down the calls from the Trump administration for the media to produce “patriotic” coverage of the war in Iran. Plus, a closer look at the reporting by legacy outlets with journalist Minnah Arshad. Arshad analyzed The New York Times' early coverage of the war, and found that Iranian victims were underrepresented. Next, Micah sits down with scholar Mahsa Alimardani to discuss fake AI images of the Iran conflict, and how AI detection tools are being used to discredit authentic footage. [22:30] Micah speaks with Samantha Gross, the director of the Energy Security and Climate Initiative at the Brookings Institution, to dissect the developing energy crisis being caused by the disruption of oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz. [37:54] Host Brooke Gladstone talks to Erik Slavin, Editor-in-Chief of Stars and Stripes, the independent, award-winning newspaper that has served the military for roughly a century, about the Pentagon's plan to crack down on their reporting and refocus their content away from “woke distractions.” Further reading / watching: “First Draft: How the Media Manufactures Consent for War,” by Minnah Arshad and Andrew Perez “How AI Content Detection is Being Weaponized in the Iran War,” by Shirin Anlen and Mahsa Alimardani “The Fake Images of a Real Strike on a School,” by Mahsa Alimardani “Why Iran's disruption of the Strait of Hormuz matters,” by Samantha Gross, Caitlin Talmadge, and Melanie W. You'll learn how Israel's dramatic targeting of Iran's top leadership is reshaping not just Tehran's power structure but the entire regional chessboard, while a critical front in Lebanon may hold the key to Hezbollah's fate. The hosts unpack whether a limited ground invasion can truly neutralize the threat, why internal cracks in Lebanon and Iran might change everything and how Israel's post–October 7 strategy marks a decisive shift toward preemption and total victory. Stars and Stripes, the venerated, independent award-winning newspaper that has served the armed services for roughly a century, may be getting an uninvited makeover, courtesy of Pete Hegseth's Defense Department. In a statement posted on X earlier this month, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said that Stars and Stripes would no longer be carrying wire reports from the Associated Press, and that it would steer away from all that is woke or might sap morale. Parnell said the defense department would be bringing the newspaper “into the 21st century.” Brooke spoke to Erik Slavin, Editor-in-Chief of Stars and Stripes. Football Playoffs, Luke Combs, Bruce Springsteen, Greenland. Winter Storm Fern is Coming. Don Lemon, Tiktok, Paris Hilton, AOC, Stars And Stripes in the Cross Hairs. Winter Storm Fern is coming—but so is Willie Geist. In this special Football Friday episode of Independent Americans, Paul Rieckhoff welcomes back one of the show's very first guests and one of the most trusted voices in American media: MS NOW Morning Joe co-anchor and Sunday Today host Willie Geist. Together they unpack a blizzard of news and sports, from Trump's escalating ICE raids and the horrific detention of five-year-old Liam Ramos to the killing of Renee Goode and what this all reveals about power, abuse and basic decency in America right now. They go below the radar on Trump's mounting assault on the free press—DOJ's failed move against Don Lemon, the targeting of outlets like Stars and Stripes, and what it's like to do Morning Joe in a country where the president openly weaponizes the government against media critics. Willie explains why this is exactly the time to lean in, not check out, and why he still sees his work as a public service rooted in gratitude, fatherhood and deep support for veterans. And because it's Football Friday, they also break down NFL Championship Sunday—Patriots–Broncos, Seahawks–Rams, Drake May's poise vs. Matt Stafford's firepower—plus Giants, Harbaugh, Skattebo, the Yankees, Don Mattingly and why live sports and music (from Luke Combs to Springsteen in Newark) still bring divided Americans together. If you're furious about ICE, worried about democracy, but still love football, snow days and a little hope in the storm, this is your episode. Because every episode of Independent Americans with Paul Rieckhoff breaks down the most important news stories--and offers light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. For more than 160 years, Stars and Stripes has walked a razor-thin line: serving the U.S. military while holding it accountable. Publisher Max Lederer says that balance remains as vital — and as fragile — as ever, noting that "our staff are paid by the Department of Defense" even as the newsroom is mandated to stay "balanced, objective, independent and impartial." Today, new Pentagon access rules, collapsing trust in media, and seismic digital shifts are putting that independence to the test. Lederer argues the mission endures because "we are dedicated to telling the story of the U.S. military community… from within the Department of Defense," a position no other newsroom occupies. There's a difference between the elite and everyone else. Elite by definition means superior in terms of ability or qualities to the rest of a group or society. Elite is not good. It is not great. It certainly is not above average. To be elite means you're among the best. The Stars and Stripes Classic pitted America's two most elite Special Operations Forces against each other on the lacrosse field. To talk about what it means to be elite, not just in sports but in anything you do, Fran Racioppi sat down with Paul Rabil. Paul is the co-founder of the Premier Lacrosse League and undoubtedly one of the most elite lacrosse players to ever play the game. Paul is multiple time NCAA champion, a four year All American, he holds NCAA records for the most goals, assists and points. He is a multiple time Player of the Year and two time champion. He holds the most points in professional lacrosse. He is what every young lacrosse player ascribes to be. Paul is also an elite visionary and businessman. He developed the PLL out of the gaps he saw as a player. Now he's changing professional sports and how athletes are treated by owners. Check out our conversation from the endzone of Gillette Stadium to learn how anyone can be elite if you're ready to put in the work and relentlessly execute. The greatest entrepreneurial adventures take a lot of sleepless nights, a bias for action and a commitment to people. Starting a professional sports league is no different. As we gear up for the first ever Stars and Stripes Classic, Fran Racioppi is joined by Mike Rabil, the co-founder of the Premier Lacrosse League. Mike and his brother Paul, started the league with a vision to put the players at the center of the business model. From better pay, to open marketing, to benefits and equity in the league, they're redefining how professional sports embraces their athletes.Mike shared the market opportunity he and Paul saw in lacrosse and how they relentlessly pursued investment and support. He explained how giving players equity, access to marketing content and a seat at the table have created a more inclusive league. And he showed us where the sport is headed with regional affiliation. They also previewed the Stars and Stripes Classic coming September 2 to Gillette Stadium where the bonds between lacrosse and Special Operations will face off for the very first time. Performing at an elite level isn't about doing special things. It's about focusing on the basics and the fundamentals; then executing them with precision. A coach's job is to harness the energy of the players and direct it towards a common goal. As we gear up for the first ever Stars and Stripes Classic, Fran Racioppi sat down with the Head Coach of the California Redwoods and Army Reservist Nat St. Laurent. Nat's primary mission is to take a group of elite alpha lacrosse athletes all capable of big things and get them to focus on the little details; a skill he learned teaching soldiers to throw hand grenades as an instructor. He shares his Army lessons learned and how they made him a better coach.Nat also provided his perspective on the growth of the Premier Lacrosse League, how regional affiliation has enhanced the fan base, and how everything the PLL does is all out; including the 2-point shot. Take a listen, watch, or read our conversation with one of the PLL's inaugural coaches, then head over to our YouTube channel or your favorite podcast platform to catch all the action from the Stars and Stripes Classic. Don't forget to go to Green Beret Foundation to join our 18 Series Match Challenge to support our team as the Snakeeaters take on the Frogmen.
