How Michael Jordan helped me to quit drinking is something I write about in my book and I thought it would be good to share a little snippet of this with you today. Because it literally shifted everything for me and helped me to quit drinking and feel good about it with no worry or fear that I would pick it up again, which is very powerful, I know. What I am going to share with you today is also the reason that I am over five years alcohol free, feel 100% secure and confident that I will stay alcohol-free, and have been able to face life and the awful events of the past few months without the thought of alcohol entering my head, even the tiniest little bit. Sobriety & Suicide - The Podcast I didn't want to make, yet I feel is necessary. I have not shared anything new with you for two months because I've been in a very difficult place, trying to cope with the unimaginable loss of my son. As the title suggests, this is a podcast about loss and love, suicide and sobriety, extremely hard things to talk about, but I feel that it is my duty to talk about them. This is a very distressing sbject, so please listen with caution and if you feel triggered by the content or it affects you in any way then please get support. I don't want to burden anyone with this or cause pain. However, I do feel like I am being blocked somehow by this and need to get it out in order to move through and forward. This won't be a neat and tidy podcast, with helpful hints for you take away, it's not that kind of podcast, but I do hope that by sharing my experiences it will help you to see that there is another way, various ways in fact to deal with life, to cope with tragic, heartbreaking events, tend to our emotions and find tiny moments of comfort in what is otherwise and impossible situation. Alcohol is not the way, not the way at all and I am extremely grateful for my sobriety, without which I would not be here now, there's no way I would be still upright if I was drinking. ** At the beginning I say two weeks - it should be two months. January is a really good month to ease into sobriety. And not because we have magical powers on January first that allow us to suddenly be able to build new habits, and not because everyone else is doing a dry January but because January is a nice month, I feel, to slow down, take it easy and find your way. January can feel like an awful month to do this, if you're in the northern hemisphere, it is cold and wet, grey and miserable, you might be recovering from Christmas and feeling a bit sad to be leaving the magic and sparkle of the holidays behind. But it is for the same reason, that January can be a perfect month for your sober journey. It is about going inwards, building a strong foundation, leaning into discomfort, tuning into to what is working for us as individuals and finding our way. The only way to do that is to take your time, do the work on yourself, dig deep, and yes take it slowly and ease into things. This is how I embraced my own sober journey and I'm here to help you do the same. I share my top tips and how taking it slowly can help you to ease into your sobriety and have a joyful January. The words I hear most often when it comes to quitting drinking are, "I'll stop drinking when..." When, at some unknown point in the future, everything is just right, all your ducks are in a row, the stars are aligned and your fridge is stocked with all the chocolate and AF drinks it can hold. The trouble with waiting until everything is just right is that you are waiting, usually a long time, to start living. I waited five years! When you wait, you are delaying peace, freedom and the life you deserve. This episode dives deep into what happens when you don't wait, how to take the leap in a way that feels good even if your scared, and the magic that happens when you do. Today I want to talk about one very specific thing when it comes to quitting drinking and that is - fear. At this time of year [Halloween] we're scaring ourselves silly and doing things that perhaps we wouldn't usually do, things that take us out of our comfort zone, things that leave us feeling exhilarated and alive, when we do embrace our fears, push past the scary feelings and do it anyway. Yet when it comes to quitting drinking, or anything new or different in our lives, we allow fear to hold us back instead of propelling us forward like we do on Halloween. I did that for the longest time, even though I wanted to quit drinking, When I thought of sobriety I felt afraid. Perhaps you do too. After all, if drinking has been such a huge part of your life, the thought of never drinking again, ever, can be terrifying. But are you willing to keep letting your fear of sobriety, your fear of the unknown and what your life could look like, keep you stuck? Some serious questions to ponder and practical and powerful techniques to help you move past your fear and embrace the unknown wonder that is sobriety feeling exhilarated and excited. Are you ready for the scariest step of your life? Of course you are! Links for more support Halloween Special Podcast Have a Spooky Sober Halloween Blog Blissfully Sober Support Space
This week's podcast guest is such a joy! I had the pleasure of chatting to Claire Comai who is the founder and creative energy behind Rehab Studios, a really exciting Brooklyn based fashion label inspired by stories of recovery from alcohol addiction and mental illness. The Rehab Studios brand and designs are inspired by Claire's own struggles with alcohol and drug addiction, which dominated her life until age 24. Now three years sober, Claire channeled the energy and restlessness she felt during early sobriety into building Rehab Studios (and other amazing experiences which you'll learn about in the podcast!) This is such a fun conversation and if you thought that being sober was dull or boring, then Claire will show you that sobriety is what you make it and in her case - about as far removed from dull as you can get! In this episode, I explore why it is that we so often push our dreams and desires to the bottom of the list and whether intentionally or not, we choose to do something, anything, other than the things we really want to do. What are the reasons why we put off doing the things we most want to do, the things that really light us up and bring us joy? It doesn't matter if it's quitting drinking, writing a book, learning to skate or starting an exercise practice, why are our excuses so often stronger than our desires and why do we let them run the show? This episode is taking an honest look at ourselves without judgement and asking "what are you choosing, really?" While it might be painful to look at it, once we know what is going on behind the scenes, or under the surface we can then begin to do something about it. And it all starts with one simple thing........ Links for more support Blissfully Sober Support Membership Book your Cuppachat Beth Kempton's Website
The best thing you can do for yourself if you want to stop drinking This podcast is a bit of a reflective episode that happens with the changing of the seasons, especially as we approach autumn and winter. This is my favourite part of the year as I can genuinely slow down, take things easy and retreat if I want to. It was during an early morning of reflection on being kind to ourselves, and the role that plays in sobriety, it got me thinking about why we resist doing the things that bring us joy. Why do we only feel ‘deserving and worthy' of, say an extra hour in bed or a soothing walk along the beach when we're ill or are making a special effort to be kind to ourselves, and why it has everything to do with why we drink and, therefore has everything to do with how we can stop drinking.
