Jeff didn't start drinking until college—but he quickly made up for lost time. In this calm share, Jeff reflects on the journey that brought him to today: two years sober, grounded in a strong program that he approaches with the commitment of a newcomer. Using Sober October to Build Real Change That Goes Beyond Day 31 In this episode, I'm getting honest about what “just taking a break” really means. Whether you're trying to reset, test your willpower, or prove something to yourself, I want to help you go deeper — and actually get what you came here for. I'll walk you through the two times I took breaks (30 and 60 days), how I convinced myself I was in control, and why both times led to even worse drinking. You'll learn how to spot when your relationship with alcohol has gone too far, why 30-day challenges don't create lasting change, and what to do instead if you want to stop starting over. If you're waking up on Day One of Sober October with mixed feelings — hope, fear, uncertainty — this episode will give you a plan and a path forward. HERE ARE THE 3 KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE: 1️⃣ Taking a break isn't proof of control. It's often a sign you're already negotiating with something that has too much power. 2️⃣ 30 days won't fix what alcohol was covering up. The real transformation comes after the “break” ends — when you're building a life that works without alcohol. 3️⃣ You need a plan that holds you. Structure, self-trust, and emotional support are the foundation for lasting change — not just willpower or white-knuckling. RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: If you're serious about making this stick — not just in October, but in real life — you need more than good intentions.

Tired of feeling sluggish, anxious, or short-tempered after drinking? In Part 2 of host Ellen Scanlon's conversation with Katie Nessel, better known as Soberish Mom on Instagram, you'll hear realistic ways to cut back without strict rules or guilt. Katie shares the mindset shift that reframed everything for her: “what did you gain last night by drinking, and what did you lose?” She explains why counting the drinks you didn't have can be more motivating than focusing on slip-ups, and how progress over perfection makes long-term change possible. We also talk about the bigger cultural moment—why moms are leading the shift away from “mommy wine culture,” how new health data about alcohol is reshaping the conversation, and what real support looks like when you want to drink less. Welcome to another episode of The Real Dish. I'm your hostess with the mostess, Chef Mareya, The Fit Foodie and I have a question for you. What happens when you take alcohol out of the equation? Do the celebrations stop… or do they actually get more meaningful? In this episode 151, we're exploring a movement that's gaining serious momentum: the non-alcoholic and zero-proof lifestyle. During Sober October and beyond, more people are rethinking their relationship with drinking — not out of deprivation, but out of a desire to live sharper, healthier, and more present. In fact, nearly 40% of U.S. adults say they're actively trying to drink less, and the NA beverage market is set to explode by 30% in the next few years. To help us unpack this shift, I'm joined by Sam Moore, the creator of Hazlo — a brand that proves you don't need alcohol to have bold, complex, and craveable flavors in your glass. Together, we'll talk about the trends fueling this movement, why it's resonating so deeply right now, and how zero-proof drinks are changing the way we connect and celebrate. So if you've ever wondered whether you'd feel better, sharper, or more you without alcohol, this conversation is going to spark something. I Quit Wine - how to stop drinking and have a much better life
In this episode, I dive into a big one – why so many of us use alcohol to avoid or numb emotions. It could be anxiety, stress, worry, or even the “good” feelings like joy and excitement. For a while, wine might feel like it takes the edge off, but the relief never lasts – and the consequences can be heavy.I share honestly about my own experience when I first stopped drinking for longer stretches. I found it really hard to have a clear, focused mind and thought something was wrong with me. What I eventually discovered is that it was actually a sign I needed to learn new ways to manage my emotions – and that's where real freedom begins.I talk about how important it is to develop a toolkit of healthy coping strategies rather than falling back on alcohol or other addictive habits. This is the key to breaking that frustrating stop–start cycle so many of us know all too well.I also touch on the role of hormones – particularly during perimenopause and menopause – and how they can affect our relationship with alcohol. It's such an important piece of the puzzle, and I encourage you to seek support from professionals who really understand this connection. At the end of the episode, I give you a little sneak peek of what's coming up next week, when I'll be talking about the new alcohol labelling laws in Ireland and what they could mean for how we all think about drinking. And, if you're ready for support, I'd love to invite you to join me inside the IQW Collective – especially with Sober October just around the corner. It's a safe, supportive space where you'll find tools, resources, and community to help you finally break free from the cycle.Check out the IQW Collective here:https://iquitwine.com/iqwa/Email me at iqwwithsarah@gmail.com if you'd like to explore private coaching.

When life feels overwhelming, do you find yourself reaching for a drink just to switch off? In this episode I explore the difference between craving the alcohol itself and craving the escape it promises. From late nights when your mind will not stop racing, to heavy responsibilities at work or home, to moments of grief or stress that feel too big to bear, drinking to escape can feel like the only option. But it quietly chips away at your resilience and keeps you stuck. You will learn why willpower alone is not enough, how to normalise emotions without numbing them, and practical ways to create real comfort in your body when everything feels too much. If you have ever told yourself, “I will cut back once life calms down,” this episode will show you how to stop waiting and start building resilience right now, no matter what is happening in your life.Book a free discovery call and let's explore what reward could look like without the wine: https://tidycal.com/90dayslater/consult

We tell ourselves the glass in our hand is what makes a night fun. That the drink is the sparkle, the release, the reason an evening feels special. But if that were true, then people who don't drink would never have fun — and no event could ever be enjoyable without alcohol. In this episode, I unpack why our brains confuse permission with pleasure, how alcohol piggybacks on moments we've already decided are “fun time,” and why those nights often come with consequences that don't feel so fun the next day. You'll hear real-world examples of how fun actually gets created, plus simple tools you can use to reclaim joy without needing a glass in your hand. If you've ever wondered whether it's really the drink that makes the night, this conversation will give you the proof it isn't — and show you how to create the kind of fun that doesn't leave you with regret.
