In this episode of THE Journal Insider podcast, host and editor Kristal Kuykendall talks with YouScience Chief Operating Officer Jeri Larsen about how their Discovery aptitude assessment platform works and why it helps both educators and students, and Paula Chilton from Williamson County Schools in Tennessee shares details about the district's implementation of YouScience Discovery platform and the impact it's had there. Paula explains how her district has embraced the insights from Discovery assessments to help middle and high school students "discover" their aptitudes and then take ownership of their learning and their futures by more closely connecting their schoolwork to their skills and aspirations. NOTE: This episode includes a few minutes of video, where Larsen demonstrates the YouScience Discovery assessment results and platform. Listen and watch on YouTube (https://youtu.be/8_Wy8L4oVwU) to see what she is talking about!  WHY THIS MATTERS: An enormous study published in July by student aptitude and career guidance platform YouScience analyzed almost a quarter-million Discovery aptitude assessments taken last year by high-schoolers nationwide. It's easy to see how this kind of data is deeply relevant to the larger curriculum goals of K–12 schools and also to the individual choices that students are asked to begin making as early as ninth grade, as they choose electives throughout high school. The analysis revealed that students have the innate abilities to excel in today's in-demand jobs but often lack interest in those fields, either because they've not been exposed to such career options or had no idea they possessed aptitudes in those fields. The findings of aptitude assessments are helpful both at the upper levels of curriculum decision-making and at the granular level, in classrooms with students. Educators and guidance counselors can see the gaps in so-called “career exposure” — where students have innate aptitudes but no career interest indicates they may need more information about career possibilities — and they help schools better tailor each student's courses in high school to the career paths they are both suited for and interested in. You might know them as a technology company, but people are at the center of what Best Buy does. And in today's tech-driven world, Best Buy knows that any organization's success is dependent on having bright, inspired and tech-savvy individuals carrying out the company's mission. And that starts by investing in our youth. We have a fascinating discussion with Tequilla Lopez, Director of Social Impact programs at Best Buy, about how the company is supporting students across the country with the skills and mentors to help them pursue their passions in STEM and technology-related fields.Listen closely, because this episode is an important one. The "digital divide" is going to negatively impact youth who don't have equal access to technology in their educational pathway. Communities and employers can help bridge that digital divide and provide their local students access to the most basic tools, experiences and skills to succeed in today's digital economy.Get ready to hear about all the amazing opportunities available to students through their community outreach programs that are building brighter futures through technology!3 Big Takeaways from this episode:The youth you inspire today could be the talent you hire tomorrow. Best Buy's student programs provide youth access to technology, mentors and skill development to prepare them for careers of tomorrow - even ones that don't exist yet!Teen Tech Centers are after-school spaces housed within nonprofits across the U.S. that are equipped with cutting-edge technology and staffed by youth development professionals who provide a safe and supportive learning environment for those students. Teen Tech Centers are all about projects, peers, passions, and play.Career Pathways are year-long curriculum-based learning to help students build skills, create a portfolio, get part-time jobs and prepare them for internships and careers in the field they're passionate about.Geek Squad Academy is a mini-camp meant to be the spark that ignites a student's mind to what's possible. These project-based experiences introduce students to technology, skills and careers.Mentors can become sponsors and can provide opportunities to students they never would have otherwise. Best Buy's Teen Tech Centers focus heavily on mentors, especially those adults who have similar experiences and backgrounds as the students they mentor, because representation matters for these youth. Tequilla shares insights into how a mentor can become a sponsor, speaking on an individual's behalf in rooms they don't have access to, which can open doors they'd never be able to walk through otherwise. The way that talent comes to us today may not be packaged in the way it has been in the past. Employers, in this new norm, you may have to dig deeper to find great talent, but truth is, it's probably right in your backyard. Those employers who are willing to go to the extra mile to have open minds, to partner with student-focused organizations, to become mentors to students and to provide that access and training will be the ones who find the greatest talent.ResourcesTo learn more about the Teen Tech Centers, visit: bestbuy.com/teentechcenter or email TeenTechCenter@BestBuy.comTo learn more about the Geek Squad Academy, visit: academy.geeksquad.com or email academy@geeksquad.comConnect with Tequilla on LinkedIn.Visit the episode page: techedpodcast.com/bestbuy

The brighter futures they inspire. They've been supported by the Trust, they've become volunteers themselves, and they both talk about that journey, from where they started to that brighter future which, for them, is now.

In Segment 1, Delegate Joey Garcia (D-Marion County) stops by to talk about an op-ed he co-wrote with John Williams (D-Monongalia) called “If You Build It, They Will Stay,” and what it means for the state. The delegates say they want to work toward keeping young West Virginians in the state and that starts with rebuilding, specifically in roads, broadband and education. Garcia says they include roads in this because of the shape of some of the state’s secondary roads, some of which are almost impassable. He says the state needs to make sure the money that has been put toward the roads is spread more evenly throughout the state.Garcia says another major factor is education, starting with attracting and retaining qualified people to teach students, including providing teachers with better salaries. Another plan is to help those going to trade and technical schools instead of four-year colleges with programs such as the Jumpstart Savings Act.In Segment 2, we focus on healthcare in politics with Dan Lauffer, President and CEO of Thomas Health Systems. Lauffer explains more about House Bill 2264, which would ease regulations for hospitals in West Virginia. Before the pandemic, the state saw multiple rural hospitals report bankruptcies, including Thomas Health, and even some closures. Thomas Health has since emerged from bankruptcy. Hospitals have also been losing money over the past several months while trying to take care of patients during the pandemic, including the supply and affordability of PPE. Lauffer says he hopes this bill would help some of those rural hospitals reopen and make a come back as it would allow them to expand to better serve the community and be exempt from the certificate of need rules. To read the full bill, visit the the West Virginia Legislature’s website. In Segment 3, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) joins us to talk about her visit to the U.S./Mexican border near El Paso regarding the country’s immigration crisis and what needs to happen to solve it including a quicker asylum process.“It’s just a human tragedy. I can’t imagine the desperation, that parents are sending their children. I understand that’s a difficult situation, but we need to solve it in their countries and also have policy that doesn’t just say ‘our borders are open,'” Capito said.Capito says some of the issues she saw at the border included a facility built to house 1,000 adults overcrowded and housing about 1,100 children as well as over-worked border agents being pulled from the field to help care for those children. She also says the children are being kept in these Department of Homeland Security facilities much longer than they are supposed to be there before they go to a Health and Human Services facility. Capito says she is concerned about the fact the president has not acted on the situation because the crisis continues to grow.In Segment 4, Chelsea Carter, program coordinator and therapist for Brighter Futures located at Boone Memorial Hospital, tells us about the effect the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the state’s problems with substance abuse.Carter herself is in recovery from substance use disorder. After getting out of jail, Carter was able to get her criminal record expunged and has now been sober for 12 years. She has also gone on to get her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in counseling. Now, she is helping others struggling with substance use disorder. She tells us the pandemic has affected people on “enormous levels” and that the state is up 40% in the opioid crisis, including an opioid death rate that has jumped 25%. Carter says in-person meetings are a lifeline for those struggling but with the pandemic, people were feeling more isolated even with virtual meetings and unable to get help. She says her workplace is now doing in-person meetings and counseling again. If you or someone you know is struggling with substance use disorder, please contact:HELP4WV at help4wv.com, or call/text 844-435-7498Brighter Futures in Boone County at 304-369-7876Drug Helpline: online or by calling 1-844-289-0879.

Engineer, philanthropist and businesswoman, Gina Cody recounts her life trajectory as an Iranian immigrant to becoming one of Canada's most influential women. Listen now! Gina Parvaneh Cody takes more than a keen interest in lofty concepts of gender diversity, social inclusion, philanthropy and affordable education. As Concordia University's first woman to earn a Ph.D. in building engineering, her story is a remarkable tale of generosity and influence. When Cody is not espousing the benefits of “smart cities” or actively encouraging young women to pursue the “wonderful” world of engineering, she reminds Canadians not to be complacent about their enviable status on the global stage. As for family enterprises, Cody believes they have a twin role to play as economic engines and caretakers of our communities. It's a recipe for opportunity, which includes a key ingredient: giving back. In 2018, Dr. Cody made a historic $15 million gift to her alma mater's Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science. In honour of her generosity, the faculty was renamed the Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science. It is the first engineering faculty in Canada named after a woman. Cody, who immigrated to Canada from Iran in 1979, holds a master's degree and a doctorate in building engineering from Concordia. She has more than 30 years of professional practice in the private sector as an engineer, corporate executive and principal shareholder of an engineering firm. She has provided engineering services to some of Canada's largest Real Estate Investment Trusts, financial institutions, builders and developers.

This is Episode 36 of the VulnerABLE Podcast! She had a very traumatic upbringing with two abusive parents, and no outlet for her pain. Now she's helping people overcome their trauma to build a better future, and she got here through resilience. She grew up with abusive parents, both in their own ways but in her words she was born into struggle. What she didn’t realize is the trauma this would leave her with until much later in life. It would make her tell herself stories like it was her fault, that she needed to be perfect, and she had no clue what to do about it. She couldn’t even find support because if her parents found out she said anything to anyone it meant there was a price to pay later on. This would lead to low self-esteem, and many other issues that lasted well into adulthood. Even when she finally decided to attend therapy, it took time before she was able to fully open up and face the trauma of her past. In a relationship years later she would realize that an argument was triggered by a past event. Essentially she was crippled when it came to make choices because of being berated by her father for a choice she made at 5 years old. This is just one of many issues that she had to work through over the years to get to the point where she is now. If you ask her the thing that made her a survivor was resilience, which is odd because most people who experience what she did have very little to no resilience at all. Now she works with others to help them uncover their traumas and work through them to become a better version of themselves. Most people who faced what she did would just be crippled in a corner, but she’s working to make sure that doesn’t happen. For more information on Jennifer Whitacre you can follow her on social media or visit her website:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/yesandjw/Website: http://jenniferwhitacre.com/Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/YesAndJW

Lucy is the clinical lead for a successful child psychology group practice in Buckinghamshire called Everlief. If you follow her online, her passion for reaching parents of school-aged children is clear, and she's done an amazing job of reaching more families with the book she co-wrote with her colleagues, Brighter Futures. Brighter Futures is a book that I'm really happy to have my hands on before my kids hit school age, and Lucy is here to tell us how she made it all happen. So Lucy, hi and welcome to the podcast. Lucy (https://www.rev.com/transcript-editor/Edit?token=qtXBAT4v3ookcJKRHJsRZrjtZgFwBkfMcvSVgEYBpdnR-L9fvJQ5zeXZ-TfNYXRVN2Ke9JXdmCR7R95O3aJ_4sbjotw&loadFrom=DocumentDeeplink&ts=31.82 (00:31)): Hi. Inspiration: What motivated Lucy to Write Her BookRosie (https://www.rev.com/transcript-editor/Edit?token=epBpCbmiToh0vPUFuPmCohqbq71q5pq39YjbWgyCYmKlhZ9T6XFqwgwHsQutSig_QXI7MqrM9I1HNRfBsd5q-GqByOk&loadFrom=DocumentDeeplink&ts=32.27 (00:32)): Can you start by telling us a little bit about what inspired you to write the book and who it's intended to help? Lucy (https://www.rev.com/transcript-editor/Edit?token=pxfjivsrFkfx7lWC7zhoIjGI2OyCkfotpLS5jFCUqMwPgSEjgGqENQ3aMbNn1eFQqn2V7hQ3SkuwX-S1xvdlLjQsmTI&loadFrom=DocumentDeeplink&ts=40.36 (00:40)): Well, okay, what inspired me, like you, wanting to do something more. I do face-to-face therapy, and I enjoy it, but I wanted to do something more that reached a wider audience of parents and also something a bit more preventative because parents come to me when they've hit crisis point pretty much. So I was looking to do something that helped them before they got to that stage. And also the families that come to our clinic have suggested writing a book over the years, and so finally a few of us got round to it and wrote that book. Rosie (https://www.rev.com/transcript-editor/Edit?token=sVI-oBrGOFT-doFDEjBNrN8Bvuv96EHXqjDvdQJCciao8A-JxLZSdk97qLIKmohY9kIKMrohFAv2M8BjtSCVifXD8lk&loadFrom=DocumentDeeplink&ts=82.61 (01:22)): Yeah. I mean, I really resonate with that experience because I think so many families that I see are just saying, "Why couldn't we have had this help sooner? Why wasn't there something available that was more affordable at an earlier point?" And a lot of people are also saying, "I've got a friend who really needs this, but they can't afford to come and see you." And that's definitely what drives me to try and do something at a more...

Hello and welcome back to the raising smart kid 2.0 podcast. I'm so glad you tuned in for today's episode because I feel it's probably one of the most important ones that we've done in our almost one hundred episodes before we get to that if I haven't had the pleasure of meeting you yet. My name is Yaşam Prax and I'm the host of raising smart kids 2.0 podcasts. More importantly, I'm a mom of two daughters a wife and have. Had the privilege working with thousands of students along with their parents. In my 17 years as a performing arts educator, I'm glad you tuned in today because you failed. Now for some people, those two words can be completely devastating which is really unfortunate because it's through our failures that we learn more. Thomas Edison the inventor of the light bulb is said to have failed 1000 times. However, he didn't see those 1000 failures as failures. He says the fastest way to succeed is to double your failure rate. So what are you going to fail at today? What will you allow your kids to fail at today? In our society failure definitely is seen as a negative quality. But in my 17 years as a business owner and my 14 years as a mom and 20 years as an educator failure is something that you need to instill in our kids as a positive quality and water. My favorite things to think about when it comes to failure is a little clip in the movie. Meet the Robinsons where the main character is devastated because something he created doesn't work. Louis is distraught. Meanwhile, the family around him start hooting and hollering and they are getting out the confetti cannons and celebrating his failure because of what they know is that the more times you fail the closer you are. At achieving that success. Over on this show notes page 4 of this podcast I'll include that clip from Meet the Robinsons because it really accurately depicts how we need to be able to see failure. When my oldest was in kindergarten she came home and she was so excited because she had earned an eraser or something so some small trinkets from her classroom teacher. When I inquired about how she had earned this coveted trinket she said, "Mommy I didn't make any mistakes on my schoolwork and there were no eraser marks so I got a prize!" And I thought oh man if kids are taught to not make mistakes we're not allowed to make mistakes and those mistakes aren't celebrated as part of the learning process. Wow. Our kids are going to have a hard time dealing with things as they get older enough to go into the world on their own. So today I want you to think about this. I have one of my favorite quotes and it's by Walt Disney in this quote he talks about not spending too much time looking back. Or in other words not spending too much mental capacity thinking about what you might construe as a failure because each of those mistakes leads to the success and leads you to where you need to be. So he says around here, however, we don't look back for very long. We keep moving forward opening new doors and doing new things. It has. We are curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths. And for me personally and in my 17-year-old business that couldn't be more true. When I opened our doors 17 years ago I did so with wanting to share my love of dance with my community as I progressed through my business and my kids desired to learn something new. My oldest wanted to learn the drums and then she wanted to learn karate so it was my responsibility as a mom and really as a creator to make those opportunities available for her. So rather than just teach dance we offered more opportunities for more families to come together and enjoy all of our programs under one roof. Saving them time and money and really the hassle of having to take multiple kids to multiple places around town at the same time. And now as we round out 2017 heading into 2018 we're opening new doors here at the academy and here on the podcast as well. We're going to dive with both feet into the deep end and introduce ways to equip kids to fund their own future. Now what that looks like is we're going to be offering courses on wine for kids across the U.S. and maybe even the world for them to learn marketable skills such as this putting together a podcast helping somebody else put out a podcast. Creating websites making videos taking photos all things that kids can do right now no matter what their age no matter what anyone else thinks. Kids are so capable and we just need to get out of their way and let them explore those things that light them up let them explore those things where their inner creator comes out and is magnified because they are loving what they are doing. And to end this podcast I want to close with another of my favorite Disney quotes and this has to do with kids and their potential and their ability to create their own Brighter Futures which is what we're helping you do here at the podcast and at the academy in 2013. And here is the quote, "To the youngsters of today. The world is getting better there still is plenty of opportunity." Yes. And as we head into the future a future where 65 percent of the jobs today won't exist when our kids are adults we need to equip them with skills to create their own opportunities create their own brighter future and create ways for them to fund those dreams are you with me head over to Elco Arts Academy. The interim Facebook page for the podcast and in 2018 we're going to roll out a new name to a new mission and a new way of connecting and impacting our kids in a bigger way. OK, my friends, I will catch you very soon. I wish you a very happy rest of your day. And here is to equipping kids to create their own brighter futures. Cheers. His 1st (of 12) suicide attempts was at age 4-1/2 to escape the emotional, physical and sexual torture of his biological mother's husband. But Wes wasn’t SUPPOSED to die. He was supposed to change the world. And he is... Abandoned at age 1 by his famous TV father and then again by his biological mother at 6, Wes wasn't supposed to amount to anything but trouble... He also wasn’t supposed to find a loving family until a kind hearted woman named saw what everyone else dismissed and discarded as a problem-child, taking him in and loving him)... He wasn’t supposed to become an entrepreneur at age 8 1/2, but did out of necessity... He wasn’t supposed to become a multi-millionaire before he was 30, living a luxurious life with 9 cars, $3,000 suits, marry a beautiful woman and raise his amazing kids... He wasn’t supposed to give it all up and start over because of the emptiness he felt inside from the never-ending pursuit of proving everybody wrong... AND a young girl named Alex wasn't supposed to impact 82 other children's lives and empower them to succeed... ...Because the morning Wes came to her school to share a message of hope a few short years ago was SUPPOSED to be her last day alive... Until Alex heard Wesley Chapman speak. This day set in motion a new beginning for Wes and he's sharing his story and his mission to transform the lives of 25 million at-risk youth with the most world's most valuable skills and support through "A Human Project"... THIS interview will be the most important thing you hear all day...
