Taking a look at all of pop culture, or at least the parts we can remember….
Halo has been a frequent subject on this here podcast, and for good reason. Now with the release of Paramout+'s new series, Halo (2022), we visit the IP from a new perspective; A serialized television show.Mike and I also settle the debate on Captain America vs Master Chief, briefly discuss the reality game show Alone (2015), the first season of Our Flag Means Death, as well as Hulu's The Dropout (2022) and Pam & Tommy (2022).If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
The Adam Project (2022) is both Netflix's latest film foray into both film and Ryan Reynolds' films. On this pod, Mike and I talk about the actors who basically just portray themselves, a hypothetical Tom Cruise The Klumps film and our perceived decline in Netflix content.Later, we talk about our latest concert, Car Seat Headrest, and the inclusion of EDM style visuals and performance intermingling with the rock scene. Finally, Mike talks about the Disney+ documentary, Get Back (2021), and how it has reshaped his thinking about The Beatles in their final days.If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
We're back to seeing movies in theaters! Mike and I decided to pay The Batman (2022) a visit and boy were we not impressed. It was weird, we liked all of the performances and the detective Batman stuff worked for both of us, but something was just not clicking and I think we diagnose some of the serious problems with the structure and concept of this film.Later, Mike talks about his revisit of the graphic novel Saga (2012), I talk about my dalliance with the first three episodes of Our Flag Means Death (2022) and my anticipation for HBO's latest series, Winning Time (2022).If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
Inspired by the Beijing Olympics, Mike and I revisited the Disney classic Cool Runnings (1993).We begin by discussing other Olympic-centric films but we also dive into the variations from the real 1988 Jamaican bobsled story as well as the fine line Disney walks with John Candy's character.Later, Mike talks about his Disney villains revisit, highlighting the perverse Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) while I hype up Apple TV+'s Severance (2022) and detail my rewatch of Mad Men (2007).If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
This week, Mike and I pivot from our original plan and instead discuss the recently wrapped Disney+ series, The Book of Boba Fett (2022).As we go into the flaws and problems we had with this series, Mike and I come to one inevitable conclusion: We didn't really like it.Afterwords, I talk about my wonderful revisit of The Mask of Zorro (1998) and Mike dives into his car-crash-esque fascination with Kanye West's latest Instagram meltdown. If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
On this week's episode, Mike and I discuss the 2008 flop Speed Racer. A film by the Wachowskis, Mike and I discuss the reaction to Japanese Anime American adaptations as well as this film's relation to the Lana Wachowski film, Matrix: Resurrections (2021).Afterwords, we discuss the latest Pokemon video game release, Pinegrove's 11:11 and my never-ending frustration with Microsoft's incompetence. If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
We're back! It's 2022 and Mike and I finally had a chance to get together to talk about all the junk we watch while the Omicron variant swept across the country.Mike and I then talk about our first year here at Subject To Blackout, our least favorites, our favorites and the stuff we remember as our first year of podcasting enters our rear-view mirror. If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
In this abbreviated Christmas Special™, Mike and I discuss the Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sinbad Christmas classic, Jingle All the Way (1996).This movie is... pretty good. It's not a true Christmas classic for a reason, but it's a pretty funny take on Christmas, consumerism and horny single dads trying to break up happy marriages. After this we're off for a few weeks as Mike and I celebrate the holidays so we wish the best to you and yours and look forward to seeing you all again in 2022!If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
On this episode, Mike and I were hyped about the release of Halo: Infinite this past week because that game means so much to our friendship. In honor of that, we revisited the seminal web series, Red vs Blue (2003).We discuss how Red vs Blue was a simpler, better time on the internet and how wonderful it can be when para-social relationships go both ways.We then talked about the downfall of internet culture with the tragic cancelling of Netflix's live action Cowboy Bebop (2021) and how the failures of that show are mostly with Netflix's distribution and marketing.Wrapping up the pod, we talk about how Hawkeye (2021) is good and I try and convince mike to binge The Expanse (2015) as the series wraps up it's six season run over on Amazon Prime. If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
In this week's episode, Mike and I talk about our thoughts on the new Netflix live-action series Cowboy Bebop. We go over what we liked, what we didn't and the very mixed reviews the series is receiving, despite the fact that neither of us understand them since we both overwhelmingly loved what we saw.Lastly, Mike joins Kevin Feige in reluctantly convincing me to watch the latest Marvel series on Disney+, Hawkeye. If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
This week Mike and I discuss a confluence of kung fu, with Jackie Chan's Police Story (1985) & Disney Marvel's Shang Chi (2021).While Shang Chi is just good, Police Story was a revelation for me personally. Even back in Hong Kong, before he made his move to Hollywood, Jackie Chan proves he is the master of physicality - in both stunts and comedy. I cannot recommend Police Story highly enough!Next, Mike tells me about the problems with Netflix's Red Notice (2021) and how The Rock brings all his works to... "pretty good." I then tell Mike about this sci-fi film I saw recently on Amazon Prime that was also, "pretty good," Coherence (2013).In the last few minutes, Mike and I talk about my issues with Apple TV+'s Foundation season one, our excitement for the Halo: Infinite beta and my enjoyment of the latest singles from Pinegrove. If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
In this week's episode, Mike and I discuss the 1998 Anime series Cowboy Bebop as well as my intro into anime. We also touch on Mike's abiity to ruin Foundation for me as well as our excitement for the Netflix live-action remake of Cowboy Bebop, releasing this Friday. We also talk about my recent viewing of Ryan Reynolds' Free Guy, our casting of Jeff Goldblum as an X-Man and the Netflix show, Big Mouth. If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
Dune 2021 is finally here and both Mike and I are big fan's of Denis Villeneuve's take on the first half (third?) of Frank Herbert's original novel. After we finish fellating the latest adaptation of Dune, I lecture Mike on the capitol G Greatness that is Tim Rogers and his epic 10 hour + review of Cyberpunk 2077.If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
This episode is double stuffed since life got in the way last week and meant we couldn't record.First up Mike and I tackle 1984's Dune. Dune is... a stinker, but I still recommend watching it if you're at all interested in Denis Villeneuve's 2021 take, coming out this weekend. We talk Dune, Wet Dune (Waterworld) and Stupid Dune (Avatar) as we try to figure out why we're so intrigued for a remake of a bad film.Next - as promised - we talk about our feelings for The Hidden Fortress and how watching Dune and The Hidden Fortress kinda just make us want to watch A New Hope...Lastly, Mike and I shoot the shit over the Netflix Cowboy Bebop live action remake, video games and Crushing, a superb album by Julia JacklinIf you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
Math!I remember Math... Psychohistory came with math... On this week's Subject To Blackout Mike and I ponder the mathlessness of episodes one and two of Apple TV+'s adaptation of Issac Asimov's Foundation. TL;DL, Mike hates it and I don't. We will continue to monitor the situation, haha.MEANWHILE, Netflix's Squid Game has inked it's way into mainstream pop culture over the last few weeks so I did a binge to see what all the fuss was about. Finally, Mike thinks I don't listen to him, but I actually do, and that's why we end the pod discussing my first viewing of the original, anime Cowboy Bebop. If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
On the latest episode of Subject To Blackout, Mike and I decided to visit the 1989 Spike Lee Joint, Do The Right Thing.During this episode we discuss Mike's heartless pirating of poor Apple's content product before we get into the meat of what it means to do the right thing. This movie wasn't my favorite before this podcast, but having talked about it, I think I appreciate it much more than I otherwise would have.Mike and I also discuss Star Wars: Visions, Dave and the genius of Dane Cook.If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
Bram Stoker's Dracula is a truly bizarre film that's actually worth as spin! Mike and I had not seen this movie until now, but we both had a pretty good time with it despite some bad accents and an incredibly horny plot.Mike and I then discuss Untold: Malice at the Palace, a documentary from Netflix about the events of - and public reaction to - the Malice at the Palace NBA brawl. Finally, I update Mike about my Cyberpunk 2077 revisit and we discuss how being pretty good just doesn't cut it when you're marketed as the best.If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
On this week's episode Mike and I watched the 2021 Nic Cage film Pig.Mike and I differ on how good we thought Pig was; I thought it was really good while Mike seemed to have a few more issues with it. You'll have to rent the movie and decide for yourself. We also talk about Nic Cage's career, our experience at the Pitchfork Music Fest and how annoying it is to watch children do drugs. If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
I like soccer. There, I said it.On this inaugural Soccer Special, my Premier League fan friends and I talk about the closed summer transfer window, our thoughts on our teams' season expectations and we make some wild prognostications... as one does this time of year.Mike ➡️ Wolves FanSaud ➡️ Arsenal FanBooze ➡️ Spurs FanTímo ➡️ Everton FanIf you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
Black Orpheus is a 1959 Brazilian film that retells the Greek tragedy of Orpheus and Eurydice. If that sentence doesn't bore you to death, feel free to stream this cinematic classic on the Criterion Channel. If like me, you're thinking that that film might not be for you, it probably isn't! This film is beautiful to look at but purposefully lingers on vivid scene after vivid scene, much to my chagrin and Mike's delight. We also chat about Bob Ross and the new documentary about him available on Netflix right now.If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
Football is back and in person. After an extended, COVID-related break, college football returns, as does my love for the Northwestern Wildcats. On the inaugural episode of Subject To Blowout, a Subject To Blackout Northwestern Wildcat Podcast, I invite my old friend Matt Lenard to join me to talk about Friday's match -up with his MSU Spartans.Feel free to head on over to SubjectToBlackout.com to reach out to us or you can find links to all of our socials including Instagram, Patreon, Twitch, Twitter and YouTube.

This week we revisited 1987's action/horror movie, Predator. In an effort to familiarize ourselves more with the directorial work of John McTiernan, Mike and I watched Predator, his sophomore directorial effort. McTiernan doesn't exactly have the reputation of being a great director, but his filmography speaks for itself. It just seems like he's a dick that no one liked and then did some felonies and then got caught. Oops...Mike and I also discuss some video games we are playing and also our anticipation for the MCU version of the X-Men.If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
Finally ditching the ridiculous, unbelievable, half-real, half-sureal world of the Fast and Furious movies, Mike and I find solid ground with 1971's Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory!Celebrating it's 50th anniversary, this film still holds up as a timeless family classic. Join us as we discuss our favorite parts, our high-deas and everyone's least favorite character, Grandpa Joe.Mike and I also discuss HBO's The Leftovers as well as Mike's very prescient realization about episode 5 of Loki on Disney+.If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
After an extended 4th break, Mike and I finally wrap up the Furiously Fast Film Fest as we discuss our "experience" with F9 and the 4DX movie presentation. We wrap up the #FFFF, preview our Willy Wonka pod, I talk about HBO's The Leftovers, Mike tries to ruin Loki with his obsession with molestation and I try and salvage the pod by asking Mike about Mario Golf. If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
This week, the Furiously Fast Film Fest is a rare double stuff edition thanks to last week's scheduling issue. But Mike and I are back to wrap up the already released Fast films as we discuss films five, six, seven and eight. Mike and I talk about what works for us and what still doesn't as well as break down some places the Fast films can go, once they've (allegedly) gone to space.Lastly we briefly discuss Disney+'s Loki, our upcoming, post Furiously Fast Film Fest film schedule and a Hot McTernan. If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
The Furiously Fast Film Fest marches on.This month, Mike and I are binging all eight of the Fast and the Furious films in preparation for the release of Fast 9 later in June, in theaters and on HBOMax.After watching Tokyo Drift and Fast & Furious, Mike and I have some differing opinions about whether or not we'd enjoy a baseball game with an obstructed view. We also talk about the irrationality of characters and the death of day-for-night shooting. If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
Welcome to the Furiously Fast Film Fest. This month, Mike and I are binging all eight of the Fast and the Furious films in preparation for the release of Fast 9 later in June, in theaters and on HBOMax.This episode, we start at the beginning with 2001's The Fast and the Furious and 2003's 2 Fast 2 Furious. While neither movie really struck our fancy, I - at least - am hopeful about the direction of the FFCU after the first two showings. If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
This week on Subject To Blackout, Mike and I revisit, not only the 2004 Indie classic Garden State, but also it's fantastic and seminal soundtrack. Zach Braff got a lot of shit back in the day for being some twee, hipster asshole but the reality is that his writing and directorial debut should be viewed as a classic of its era. Sweet and funny to serious and introspective, Garden State isn't a perfect movie, but it is a great one.If you haven't seen it recently, it's definitely worth another spin. The soundtrack also was one of the most important mix tapes of it's generation, introducing many musicians to a much larger audience and helped to create a cultural shift in pop music.Lastly, I tell Mike about the wonders of the Starz series Party Down and why - if you have Hulu - you should watch this late aughts classic. If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
On this latest episode of Subject To Blackout Mike and I talk about our fond appreciation for the honest-to-goodness delight that is the 2001 buddy-cop classic, Rush Hour 2.Then, we discus our profound disappointment in the 2021 Lollapalooza lineup. Mike and I met in high school, but we became so close in the following years based on our profoundly similar tastes in pop culture and that was exemplified by our passionate exploration of the mid-to-late aughts music scene in Chicago.Lollapalooza in those days were our Christmas and Birthdays combined and to see the sad state is has declined to since Mike moved to China and I stopped attending has been a bummer to say the least. We discuss how Chicago's Riotfest and Pitchfork music festivals have picked up the torch where Perry Ferrell dropped it.Finally, we talk about the underrated and underappreciated filmography of John McTiernan and how we (read: Tímo) need to revisit his classic films in upcoming episodes of Subject To Blackout. If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
Long time, no see, Rush Hour! Mike and I discuss the 1998 buddy-cop classic, Rush Hour, starring Chris Tucked and Jackie Chan. We talk about our nostalgia for this extremely 90s movie as well as delve into the socio-political backdrop of the film and how things have changed in Hong Kong and Mainland China since then.If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
On this latest episode, Mike and I discuss the 1999 cult classic, Mystery Men. We also recast the film using Armageddon as our starting point, which leads to... comedy gold.We also briefly discuss our streaming service fatigue. If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
Last episode, we watched the 90s Mortal Kombat and this week we tackle the 2021 version. Mike and I were split on both films, but I think you might be surprised by the positions we take on HBO Max's latest release. After that we discuss the full series of Disney+'s The Falcon & The Winter Soldier, unwanted prequels and frosted tips. Remember kids, your hair will always grow back...If you want to interact with the show, you can find us on all the socials (except facebook.
MORTAL KOMBAT!In preparation for the release of Mortal Kombat (2021), Mike Marshall - of Name Taken Podcast fame - joins me to discuss the disappointing, albeit ambitions action adventure film Mortal Kombat (1995). We also gab about video game movies in general but stick around for the shocking M. Night Shyamalan twist toward the end of the pod.Michael can be found at the Name Taken Podcast, so check that out today!https://linktr.ee/Nametakenpodcast
In this episode, Mike Marshall (from the Name Taken Podcast) and I review 1995's Kevin Costner vehicle, Waterworld. If you haven't seen it, it's just as bad and uninteresting as you fear. I also go on to demonstrate - beyond the shadow of a doubt - that Blade Runner 2049 is a superior film to the original. We also discuss video games, nihilism and mid 2000s blogwave.Michael can be found at the Name Taken Podcast, so check that out today!https://linktr.ee/Nametakenpodcast
