AI dominates headlines and investment conferences these days…often to excess.  Sensational stories like “Here's the robot that will steal your job” and charges of “Disrupt, transform or die” fill our feeds and raise fearmongering narratives that channel Issac Asimov's I-Robot or James Cameron's Skynet--of course from the Terminator series.  Quant shops, hedge funds, and algorithmic trading firms have embedded AI in their models for over a decade.  But have we hit a tipping point where applications of these accelerated computing capabilities are ready to invade the more traditional asset management business?  What are those use cases and which are most promising?  And how should we think about peaceful future co-existence of the human and the machine in managing portfolios.  Martin Escobari and Dave Morehead join us to unpack this provocative topic. Celebrate the life and career of the late Robin Williams with us today on a day of remembrance following the date of his death on August 11, 2014. We're talking about Bicentennial Man (1999), the turn-of-the-century film that brings Issac Asimov's 1976 novel to the silver screen. The film follows Andrew, a NDR 114 model android who embarks on a 200 year journey towards becoming human. Carie is understandably endeared by the vulnerable performance of her favorite actor of all time, while simultaneously being annoyed with the pacing and often inelegant writing. Ross is digging his heels in on the hypothetical of robots naturally evolving through what Asimov called "the ghost in the machine," and the siblings accidentally uncover the fact that I, Robot (2004), and Home Alone (1990) occur in the same cinematic universe. This promises to be a far reaching and insightful conversation that you do not want to miss.

Episode 151 - MARK HOUSE Cryopreservation and wealth was once the purview of science fiction and Hollywood. Freezing one's self to be revived in the future is not just something out of Issac Asimov book or a Ridley Scott movie. The science, estate planning, and economics of this "call option on immortality" are here right now. There are legitimate and current issues with cryopreservation and wealth- fascinating ones at that! Science, estate planning, ethics, governance, economics and good old-fashioned drafting are in focus as I speak with Scottsdale-based attorney MARK HOUSE. We're going to get our arms around the misconceptions of the freezing process and what that means legally and practically. With that background, we'll dive into the structuring and drafting considerations to effectuate this amazing concept. Finally, we have some fun by guessing at what the world may look like with revived citizens hundreds of years from now. INTRODUCTION BACKGROUND -How did Mark get into estate planning and how did he get into cryonics? CRYONICS -Let's define freezing "pre-death" vs "post-death." -Behind the Science: GREG FAHY'S WORK and BIO -What is the legal and funding process? ESTATE PLANNING AROUND CRYOPRESERVATION AND WEALTH -Usually when people die (and the being's existence terminates), the assets transfer to beneficiaries. However, here something different happens. -Is there a difference between being kept alive but in "suspended animation" and dying? -Does having various features including DNA maps serve as the basis for a new being? DIRECTED TRUSTS -Ownership in a trust should be able to provide the structure that allows the Grantor to be resuscitated when the science catches up. -Trusts have a Grantor, Trustee, Corpus (literally in this case) and beneficiaries. -Trustees must administer, invest and distribute.  -How does a directed trust allow the Grantor's intent to persist? TRUST REQUIREMENTS -Perpetuity and a Good Trust Protector Structure are vital. -With that in place, trustees must have distribution flexibility and discretion around "beneficiary determination" -Why is it important to have broad Trustee choice? -If we're making guesses about the future, why is nimble decision-making process around "science determinations" important? -When talking about investment flexibility, is endowing a future being a "prudent investment'? If so, how does a trustee sign off on that? CRYOPRESERVATION AND WEALTH ISSUES -Who pays the freezer? How much does this cost? -Once we know that, how does the trust pay for it? -When should a person use life insurance? When employed, does the presumption of death change anything? -What happens if you run out of funds? -Does it make sense to (also) endow the future persons' lifestyle? If not, how will they function in the future? -Should other the trust not include future beneficiaries to reduce a potential future conflict -How do you staff this? (See here for an interview with Betsy Brown on Corporate Trustees designed to deal with tricky situations: https://frazerrice.com/ep-63-betsy-brown/) -What if the individual or corporate trustees cease to exist? (Trust protector) -Is there liability for the science committee if they unfreeze too soon?  Can other beneficiaries then be added? Should they be? -Are private trust companies common in these situations? BEST PRACTICES AROUND CRYOPRESERVATION AND WEALTH -What's the best way to get started? On Thursday April 30th, 2020 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present a discussion and review of the 1934 to 1954 science-fiction Lensman series, by Edward Elmer Smith, PhD, a scientist in the food industry specializing in pastry, whose major accomplishment in food engineering was making powdered sugar adhere to doughnuts, and whose major accomplishment in science fiction writing was the creation of a sub-genre called “Space Opera” His Lensman series and its concepts and themes influenced Frank Herbert's Dune, Roddenberry's Star Trek, and Lucas' Star Wars. It even re-influenced the screen version of one of Smith's inspirations The 1912 Burroughs' John Carter, when Burroughs's Therns were rewritten by Andrew Stanton as Smith's evil “Eddorians” and their medallions given the powers of an Arisian Lens. Smith developed the concept of the Multiverse, laser and particle weapons and super computers years before they appeared. His concept of the Lensmen as an incorruptible Galactic police force, guided by secret masters from a hidden planet seems to have been inspired by Theosophy's “Ascended Masters” from Tibet, and King Arthur's knights of the Round Table and the Holy Grail. The Lensmen are obviously the origin of the Star War's Jedi.  Another imitator of Doc Smith was Issac Asimov with his Foundation Series. Asimov was so successful with his Foundation series that he beat out Doc Smith for the 1966 Hugo award for “the best all time science-fiction series.” But at least they declared that Doc's epic was runner up. So if you would like to look deeper into this and even review what happened when Doc ran one of his Lensmen for president and how Clarissa MacDoughil became the first Lenswoman, tune in and we'll activate the lens.

We're discussing Permutation City, a 'hard science fiction' book from 1994. This book explores many concepts including The Dust Theory and achieving immortality through copying your consciousness. (4:24) Intro to Dust Theory. There are infinitely many universes existing at all space and time. As soon as a universe is perceived by a conscious intelligence, that universe comes to exist, and that universe will always continue to exist as long as there is consciousness to observe it. (8:11) Are we in a simulation? We learn in response to stimuli which is also how LLMs (large language models) learn too. (13:12) Nat, Neil, and Adil define consciousness, discuss the idea of transporting consciousness, and how we differ from LLMs. We have a private and inner mind that generates its own thoughts and feelings. We can't be certain whether computers have this or not. (22:01) There's an 'engine' in our heads that is focused on our survival and continuation. (23:21) Ethics surrounding death. One can argue that life is short, but when you've lived for thousands of years through copying your consciousness, it becomes a question of when it's enough. (28:39) If we could somehow prevent bodily decay and the death of our loved ones, would we ever be ready to die, and is aging something that we can slow down or affect?  (33:43) In the book, from the perspective of the humans, the copies are just programs who look intelligent, but they aren't real. From the perspective of the copies, it's all very real. (41:31) Time dilation and running consciousness slower for the copies. The slowdown doesn't necessarily affect the copy. The time perception is still the same to them, but it may affect how they interact with the real world. (46:08) There's a baseline risk for being alive. You can try to get all of your life risks to zero, but it is best to accept that there will always be some general risk. (51:49) Collaboration in publishing. While most books have a single author, it may add some dimension to get expertise from guest authors with knowledge in different fields. (54:50) What did Greg Egan regret most about Permutation City?  (1:02:11) That concludes this episode! Stay tuned for our next episode on History of the Peloponnesian War. If you're a fan of Issac Asimov, you probably like robots, the Three Laws of Robotics, and characters having long, expository conversations about interesting ideas. If that's true, then Robots and Empire is the book for you! It features, except for when the plot forces its way in, our two favorite robots, Daneel and Giskard, having long, expository conversations about the Three Laws of Robotics. Jon is quite outspoken about how those are his favorite bits. Dan and I are more apt to keep that revelation to ourselves. Robots and Empire lives in between the three Elijah Baley novels and the Foundation books. As a consequence, it never seems to get the attention of Asimov's other major novels; it's never, for example, been made into an official mass-market audiobook. But if you love the three Elijah Baley novels and the Foundation books and if you've bought into Asimov's project to link most of his work into a tremendous future history, Robots and Empire isn't just essential, it might even be the most important piece. And we're finally talking about it, starting, in this episode, with the first two chapters, "The Descendent" and "The Ancestor." You don't want to miss this one!

It's human nature, it seems, to celebrate round numbers, 40th birthdays, 20th wedding anniversaries, 10th high school reunions, and so forth. New Year's Day 2000 was a huge deal even though, as Arthur C. Clarke was quick to point out, the third millennium CE didn't start until 2001. Early on, we poked a bit of fun at this tendency, culminating in episode eight, because eight is a very round number: It's "10" in base eight, "20" in base four, and "1000" in base two. That was also when we tied Manimal for their number of episodes. But now we're celebrating our 50th episode and that is a milestone. Fifty isn't just 6.25 on the Manimal scale, it's when a lot of comics and magazines (remember those?) have their first special issue! It's a half-century, a semi-centennial, and a golden jubilee! You might even say that we're almost playing with a full deck! So we celebrate, reminisce a bit, and wax some nostalgia. And we take care of some business since there's a trailer out for season 2 of Foundation. But the main event here is the most shocking of plot twists! The most special of special guests! It's the one guest that no one, I say, no one, could have expected! And not just because he's 103 years old and refuses to leave his apartment! It's our interview with the professor of biochemistry, the great explainer, and the father of robotics. He's the founder of foundations, he's one-third of the big three, he's the best science writer according to the Clarke-Asimov Treaty, and he's The Sensuous Dirty Old Man. It is, of course, the Great and Glorious Az, Issac Asimov himself! And he joins us for a conversation! Believe it or don't believe it, but DO NOT miss it!

In July 1938 Astounding magazine under the editorship of John W. Campbell published a story for the first by future Grand master Clifford D. Simak. This story Rule-18 was not a classic, nor was it considered one of the great SF writer's better stories. OK, so why the hell are we covering it on this series devoted to classic SF stories classics of the 30s? The impact of this story is an interesting case. When the issue ran the story was dismissed in the letter column by a young fan from Brooklyn named Issac Asimov. Wanting to understand his issues with the story the elder Simak wrote Asimov and thus began a friendship. Re-reading the story to answer the letter, Asimov found the story worked; this experience is one he considered crucial to his development as a writer. So I invited Alec Nevala-Lee the author of Astounding (A history of the golden age SF) and Seth Heasley host of The Hugos There podcast to join me for this episode. None of us had read the story before. Rule-18 is about a 24th-century football game between Mars and Earth. In this discussion we talk about the story, the issue of Astounding it appeared in, John W. Campbell's relationship to the writers, the influence on Asimov, and we debate if this story should be canon. If they fail to do one of these two things, they will enter "Plak Tow," or the "blood fever," become violent and potentially die. Star Trek canon has established that Vulcans can have sex (and I guess, masturbate too) any time they want; not just during pon farr. But masturbating can't kill their crazy sex urges during pon farr. Only mating with a Vulcan they're bonded to can do that (or, alternatively, ritualized battle, or the "kal-il-fee").“Africa U.S.A” was a 100-acre wild animal preserve in Soledad Canyon, California (in Santa Clarita, about 30 miles northwest of Los Angeles). It only existed from 1965-1969 before it was tragically destroyed by a flood. “Shore Leave” was in fact the only Star Trek episode filmed there.Angela reappears at the end, after Kirk and the Caretaker have had a conversation about the planet. We don't see her coming out from underground, but at the end, when everybody is paired up we see her standing next to Rodriguez, apparently healed and/or resurrected. At no point does anyone mention her or the fact that she was injured/dead.Androids, or robots made to look like humans, are a science fiction staple. The term originates in the 1700's, as a descriptor for an automaton. (Automatons are human-like or animal-like mechanical dolls that move and perform functions when wound up or switched on. There are lots of creepy historical examples. See for yourself on YouTube.) Androids began showing up in science fiction around the turn of the century and have been heavily featured in lots of science fiction short stories, books, film, and television. Some famous and early examples are found in Metropolis, the 1927 German film by Fritz Lang, I, Robot by Issac Asimov, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K. Dick (which was the inspiration for Blade Runner), Westward , which, before it was the popular HBO series created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, was another television series from the 1970's, written and directed by Michael Crichton, and of course, Star Trek. Episodes of the Original Series that feature androids include “What Are Little Girls Made Of?", "I, Mudd", "Return to Tomorrow", and "Requiem for Methuselah.” One of the most beloved main characters of Star Trek: Next Generation is Data, an android created by Dr. Noonien Soong. Many stories about androids are not really about androids as much as they are about humans; android stories tell us about the human condition and human nature. Depictions of female androids, like the androids in The Stepford Wives or Westworld, tell us something about the ways that humans (read: men) understand, idealize, and seek to control women.

Erich and Jordan begin a new breakdown series for the Apple TV exclusive Foundation. The Foundation was originally a science fiction book written by Isaac Asimov. The series was initially published as a trilogy from 1951-53. It won the one-time Hugo Award for "Best All-Time Series" in 1966. The books recount the fall of a vast interstellar empire and the establishment of its eventual successor. They also feature his fictional science of psychohistory, in which the future course of the history of large populations can be predicted. The adaptation for the show is helmed by David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman. Asimov's daughter, Robyn Asimov serves as an executive producer. Casting includes Jared Harris as Hari Seldon, Lou Lobell as Gaal Dornick, and Lee Pace as Brother Day. Robin Williams embodied all that was great about the 1990s. But his unbridled physical humor paired with a natural ability to bring warmth to the screen were both missed in the 1999 drama “Bicentennial Man” in which Williams plays an android. The film opens with a slightly weird obsession with a child named Lil' Miss and ends with Robin's character marrying Lil' Miss' youthful doppelganger granddaughter. The hosts discuss the trademark Williamesque performance and critique the lengthy harried-paced script (based on a novel by Issac Asimov, and written by “Matilda” writer Nicholas Kazan).   Follow The Shiterion Collection!   Instagram: @ShiterionCollection   Twitter: @Shiterion_Pod   Facebook: facebook.com/theshiterioncollection   Email us theshiterioncollection@gmail.com.   You can find Kate Santos online @ocleoo on Insta and @funny_cat_gifs on Twitter.   Stevie Anderson is rolling as @spaghetti_witch on IG and @spaghetti_witch on Twitter.   Theme song by Honor Nezzo @nezzzie

The Hermetic Hour
Cliodynamics - Predicting Socioeconomic and Political Events

On Thursday, July 9th, 2015 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will have a discussion on "Cliodynamics" a new "science" of socioeconomic and political trend and event prediction. Contrary to popular belief this discipline was not spawned by Issac Asimov's Foundation Series (Hari Seldon's Plan) but is very reminiscent of it. One of the founders is Peter Truchin, a biologist at the University of Connecticut who has written a book called "War and Peace and War". In which he examines the rise and fall of empires on the cliodynamic scale. This book invites comparison to Oswald Spengler's "Decline of the West" which was avidly read by Hitler and George Bush's Neo-Cons.  It was the Machiavelli of the 19th century. Cliodynamics uses Malthusian mathematical formulas to predict economic and political events. So if you want to know what the boys in the think tanks are reading, tune in and we'll invoke the muse of history (Clio).
