Send us a textSamson “Sam” Grisman has been surrounded by music his entire life. From a young age, he fell in love with the music played around him by family, friends, and especially his father, David.David, a multi-instrumentalist, has performed for decades with and/or alongside Peter Rowan, Red Allen, Maria Muldaur, Darol Anger, Doc Watson, Mike Marshall, Tony Rice, and Andy Statman.David has called his particular stylings “Dawg music,” embracing his nickname, “Dawg.” That nickname was first given to him by close friend and frequent collaborator Jerry Garcia.Music has been so prevalent in Sam's life that from a young age, he assumed everyone played music. He saw people's instruments as part of their personality, and he thought everyone was born with a proclivity towards their instruments.Though he has since realized that learning an instrument comes with time and practice, he has never lost what he considers a sense of duty to perform, and he wholeheartedly embraces the music he grew up around.David always encouraged his children to learn instruments, practice playing other people's songs, and work on original compositions to build their musical experience. District 2 covers most of North and Northeast Portland, including neighborhoods such as Irvington, St. John’s, Kenton and Cully. On Oct. 17, “Think Out Loud” convened a District 2 candidates forum at Oakshire Beer Hall. As the Dodgers get ready to play in the World Series this coming week, we look back at the Series they played in October of 1974 against the Oakland Athletics. It didn't go well for Los Angeles, but that didn't deter a young kid from South Pasadena who fell in love with the Dodgers as a 9-year old and has kept that love affair with the team for half a century. Mark Langill knew from a very young age that he wanted to be around baseball... and the Dodgers in particular. And so he became a sportswriter and covered the team he adored fora few years. But that wasn't enough for Langill. He wanted to be even closer to the team... a part of it if you will. And that's just what happened. The Dodgers hired him to be their team historian. Never has someone been more perfect for a position. Mark's recollection of Dodgers history is unparalleled. He can tell you about every start Don Drysdale had in August of 1968. He can tell you the date Maury Wills was traded away from the Dodgers. He can tell you what Tommy John's record was in 1974 before his season ended with a surgery that would be named after the Dodgers lefty. He can tell you more than you'll ever want to know... and he's the first to admit that he crosses that line enthusiastically. But in this case, he'll tell you about that '74 series when Mike Marshall picked off Herb Washington in Gm 2 to help secure the Dodgers lone win of the series.. He'll tell you about the throw Joe Ferguson made to nail Sal Bando at the plate in Game 1. He'll tell you about Tommy Lasorda wearing two different shoes while coaching third base. And he'll tell you how he told his favorite player, Jimmy Wynn, about a grand slam that Wynn hit that Mark never forgot... but the Toy Cannon sure did. Before there was Wikipedia, there was Mark Langill... and he's way more fun and interesting. It's time for Dodgers Baseball on the Past Our Prime podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. In 1973 the Dodgers had an 8 1/2 game lead in the Cincinnati Reds before the Big Red Machine hunted them down and won the division. So in the offseason, the Dodgers acquired Jimmy Wynn... and relief pitcher Mike Marshall... and they both made quite the difference... The Toy Cannon provided a big bat in the middle of the lineup and Marshall was sensational out of the pen. Pitching in a MLB record 106 games including 13 in a row at one point, the relief pitcher was on the cover of the 8/12/74 issue of Sports Illustrated because of a season that would see him notch 208 1/3 innings pitched while winning 15 and saving another 21 en route to the Cy Young Award, and helping the Dodgers capture the NL West crown over Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan and the Reds. And while the Reds had a surplus of stars, so did the Dodgers... with a pitching staff of Don Sutton, Tommy John, Andy Messersmith and Marshall and an infield of Ron Cey, Bill Russell, Davey Lopes and Steve Garvey that would play together for a record 8 1/2 seasons. Cey would make his first of 6 All-Star teams in 1974 and manned the hot corner for the Dodgers until leaving for Chicago after the 1982 season but not before amassing the 2nd most HR's in L.A. Dodgers history with 228. The Penguin talks about being a part of the most successful infield in baseball history, why the Reds are in the Hall of Fame and he and his Dodger teammates are not, what it was like to go up against his boyhood idol, Willie Mays and much more when he joins us for a candid conversation on the Past Our Prime podcast. If you like baseball you'll love this interview. I you like Pittsburgh sports, you'll love this interview. Former Pittsburgh Pirate closer and World Series Champion Kent Tekulve joins Tim in this special extended episode. Kent talks baseball, Pittsburgh, how to teach kids about sports, and somewhat about life. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Kent_Tekulve_-_The_Closer_auphonic.mp3 This is an extended conversation where I promise you that after you listen to this, you'll feel like you made a new best friend. With that in mind, we're going to get right to our interview. But before we do, I think I owe it to you to give you some of the basics. Kent Tekulve is a former Major League Baseball pitcher. He was a tall, skinny reliever and a closer in his career, which included stops in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Cincinnati. You can learn a ton if all you do is search for his name online, and you'll get all his stats. But I have to say, there is one stat they got wrong. Kent is listed at 6'4” on all of the breakdowns. That is simply not true. Kent Tekulve pitched in more than 1,000 major league games during the 1970s and 80s. He recorded an unbelievable 184 saves. He was a closer, and if you know anything about baseball, closers are the coolest dudes on the roster. They come in when the pressure's on and they close out the game. He's most known as a Pittsburgh Pirate, but not just any Pirate. Kent was the pitcher on the mound to get the last out of the seventh game in the 9th inning of the 1979 World Series. This was the last time the Pirates made it to the World Series, and the last time they won a World Series. Kent was on the mound in Baltimore for that feat. He came up in the minors with the Pirates and played in his first major league game in 1974. He's  was a relief pitcher in Major League Baseball for 16 years, playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Philadelphia Phillies and Cincinnati Reds. He was best known as a side-arm pitcher who threw the final pitch to help the Pittsburgh Pirates win the 1979 World Series. Tekulve graduated from Marietta College in Ohio, and then signed as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He played for them until 1985.  His most memorable seasons were 1978 and 1979 when he saved 31 games and posted ERAs of 2.33 ('78) and 2.75 ('79). In 1979, he was key to the Pirates World Series season and in Game 7 of the World Series that year in Baltimore. In 1985, the Pirates traded him to the Phillies. In 1989, he signed with the Cincinnati Reds, retiring from baseball at mid-season. Tekulve led the National League in games pitched four times, appearing in 90 or more games three times. He is one of two pitchers (also Mike Marshall) in baseball history to appear in 90 or more games more than once. They did it three times each. Tekulve had three saves in the 1979 World Series, which tied the single-Series mark set by Pittsburgh Pirate Elroy Face in the 1960 World Series. That record would stand until 1996. Tekulve holds the National League record for career innings pitched in relief (1,436+2⁄3). For a time, he held the major league record for career relief appearances - 1,050 career games, all in relief. Tekulve holds career records for most appearances and innings pitched without making a single start. He still resides in the Pittsburgh area.

Music is powerful! Independent Christian artist Mike Marshall left a stable job, taking a leap of faith in going into full-time music ministry, and he hasn't looked back. Along with releasing several singles (he plays some for us on this episode) and an album, he's also a leader in a ministry that will be hosting an annual event in a few weeks called "Revival on the River" in Alabama. (3:44) Why Christian music? Mike talks about the connection to something bigger, how he found God through music, which gave him a deeper relationship with the Lord. Now, he wants to share Jesus with others through music too, whether it be Christians or the unchurched. (10:05) He plays and sings part of his 1st single, an original song appropriately called "Jesus." Music can also (14:12) touch people through the love and healing power of God, he believes. He points to examples in the Bible and also how music is used in church services and even Beethoven. As a worship leader, Mike is led by the Holy Spirit but also believes in practicing, preparing to get it right and create those moments for God to move. For the last few years, (21:380 he's also been the Operations Director for the non-profit Take The City, a humbling experience to see real life challenges more and to play music for sometimes just one person in a prayer room - which has helped him make it intimate when he's leading worship for hundreds of people. (26:50) Thousands are expected at their "Revival on The River" (where I'll be the emcee) at the Phenix City AL amphitheater on Friday, April 14 - a free event with free Chick-Fil-A sandwiches! There will be music, fun, a message, water baptisms and more. The goal is unity for churches, salvations, and an opportunity to get involved with this street ministry's monthly outreaches. (33:22) Mike also shares with us how and why he trusted God to go into music ministry full-time. He also explains how he looks at life with God like a marriage covenant. And how does he write those original songs? Mike shares how he started writing his most popular one...while in a Chick-Fil-A bathroom. (40:15) He plays and sings another song for us: "Thank You" off his album that came out 1 year ago called "Come On In." You can find more information about Mike and download, listen to his songs at https://www.mikemarshallmusic.com/. Music helps him come alive and he's grateful to God for saving Him! Mike closes us in prayer. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast! Also, write a quick review about it, on Apple podcasts. For more info and all past episodes, go to www.wtvm.com/podcast/.

For about a quarter century, KQED Forum listeners have been getting dressed, brushing their teeth and driving to work to the sounds of “Peter Pan” by musician Mike Marshall. On Monday, they will have a new soundtrack. Each hour of the show is getting its own new theme song, composed by NPR's Ramtin Arablouei. To mark the occasion, we'll talk about what makes a great theme song, including the best TV themes through the decades. And we'll open the phone lines to ask our listeners: What TV theme song do you never skip?

For the last 15 years, Mike Marshall has been working in the land development side of real estate, specifically within land use entitlements. Entitlements are the first step in the development process, before the engineering and building permit phases. Essentially, entitlements are a set of approvals granted for a certain piece of property. Aspects that are included in entitlements are things like zoning, land use, architecture, and environmental review. Mike and his team work to change the entitlements of a property to make a piece of land more valuable. This is extremely attractive to developers who would much rather buy land that's already been through the process instead of spending the time and resources to do it themselves. When it comes to vacant land and entitlements, Mike says land on the urban fringe of an area is the sweet spot. Buying land and taking the time to add entitlements significantly increases its value without ever having set foot on it. Mike shares his tips on how to build out a strategy and marketing plan for land after it's been through entitlement. It's a great way for folks involved in other real estate markets to diversify their portfolios. Check out Mike's website, EntitleAndFlip.com, and Entitle and Flip Facebook Group. What's Inside:—Examples of entitlements and what the process looks like.—How Mike and his company use entitlements to increase vacant land value.—Strategy and marketing tips for entitled land.
