    Minimum Viable Activity

I'm Tom Hailey and this is The Break Out Session Podcast. Do you sometimes feel you have to THINK BIG all the time and fill each day with audacious activities? I'm working on not thinking like that, at least not for a while. My first quarter 2022 goal is to make significant progress on mastering the technical and workflow aspects of taping and posting podcast episodes. It takes a lot of little steps to do that, and it can be a bit tedious. So, I'm experimenting with doing very small projects to test each phase. Sort of a Minimum Viable Activity. I'm doing just enough of something to test a process or tool but not so much that it causes me to hesitate to spend time on it. The idea is to go ahead and make a mistake, learn, and move on…getting better each day. That's why I'm currently doing these short solo episodes. They take a fraction of the time of a long-form interview, and I'm learning lessons that will help me make the longer shows faster and better. This is a very brief episode that took about thirty minutes to outline and it's only about 253 words. But it makes a point and I get to practice all of the production steps. One small step at a time. So, what's the take-a-way for you? Try breaking a project down into the smallest possible segments, and work on improving one little bit at a time. It sounds like fun. Thanks for listening. I'm Tom Hailey and this is The Break Out Session Podcast. Well…it's been almost two years since I posted an episode here. I've been working on building another podcast named Bluegrass Region Voices and Views about interesting people, places, and activities around the Bluegrass Region of Kentucky. I live in Lexington and the idea for that podcast is to tape episodes with friends and make new friends, about a wide range of topics. Those shows are mostly taped in person in my home studio or at coffee shops and other sites around Lexington. Now that I have that show running pretty smoothly, I'm ready to get back to this project, The Break Out Session. Here I'll be doing some solo shows and talking with people around the country, not just here in The Bluegrass Region. My original vision for The Break Out Session was to host some in-person meet-ups and workshops here in Lexington. Covid sidelined those plans and here in January 2022, they are still sidelined. I'll ease back into The Break Out Session by taping solo shows about some personal development topics. This episode is to check back in with my subscribers and to do checks involving the podcast hosting service I use, my website, and other tech stuff. I'm not sure yet how often I'll be posting episodes. But…this is a start. Please stay tuned. You can find my website for this show at: https://www.thebreakoutsession.com/ My other show is at: https://www.bluegrassregionvoicesandviews.com/ Thanks for listening.

It's challenging for many technically oriented start-up or small businesses to handle all of the sales, business development, and marketing functions in-house. Often the existing team is focused on product development issues. That work can leave little time or other resources to build and manage the sales function. My guest today has a solution to that problem with the business he began a year ago. He was a guest on this podcast in March of 2019. We are checking in on him a year later to see how it's going. We also talk about five sales strategies and networking suggestions. If you're a small business owner or interested in sales processes, listen in on this conversation with Dwayne Buckles of Rainmaker Ideas.

I had the privilege of reading the draft of Ignite Your Magnificence. It is a practical guide to help readers understand how to deal with the confusion and conflict that often occurs between our Head and Heart. It introduces the concept of MQ which is our Magnificence Quotient. The Magnificence Quotient is a method of understanding how our Head and Heart can work together by using the tools of Self-Awareness and Heart-Sourced Vision. It helps deal with the things that get in the way of living our fullest, such as the three-headed monster of Fears, Self-Doubts, and Limiting Beliefs. In this podcast conversation, we dive into these concepts. Z's email address is: znewellinspires@gmail.com His website is at www.znewell.com

Tell a Story and Change a Life - A Conversation with Michael Davis

Play Episode Listen Later May 4, 2017 76:57

Episode Length: 1 Hour 16 Minutes I met Michael Davis at a National Speakers Association Kentucky Chapter meeting, and he immediately had a positive impact. We discuss that along with other stories about the importance and method of story telling, listening, and public speaking. Michael's passion for storytelling and public speaking was not obvious early in his life. As a child, he was shy and reserved – not an indication he'd grow up to be a professional public speaker and presentation skills coach. This is especially surprising because of an incident in first grade that caused so much embarrassment he became afraid of speaking to groups of any size. That experience carried over into adulthood. As a young financial planner, his seminars about money were poorly delivered. He was given an ultimatum – “Become a better presenter…. or ELSE!!” This stirred up all of his anxieties about public speaking. Because of that threat, he joined Toastmasters International in 1994. There he quickly discovered a passion for the art of public speaking. He learned that crafting and delivering impactful presentations is a learnable, repeatable skill. In the years that followed, he became a voracious student of public speaking and storytelling. He also realized that he loves to help others improve these skills. That inspired him to start the company Speaking CPR. In 2011, Michael earned the designation Certified World Class Speaking Coach. The processes and skills he teaches help you increase your visibility, create more opportunities for advancement, save you time, and may also increase your income. To keep abreast of new ideas from the speaking world, he works closely with World Champion and Hall of Fame speakers. He also studies the work of Hollywood screenwriters and professional comics to expand his knowledge of presentation skills and offer a unique perspective on these topics. Because of his dedication to the craft, Michael is sought by speakers all over the world. He has produced audio programs, is a contributing author to three public speaking books, has recently written his first book, ‘THE Book on Storytelling,' and presents public speaking and storytelling skills workshops throughout the year. Michael also works closely with speakers in the Ted X Cincinnati event and has successfully coached several speakers in Toastmasters International World Championship of Public Speaking annual contest. Michael is a candidate member of the National Speakers Association (Kentucky Chapter) and a member of Toastmasters International. He can be reached through his website at www.SpeakingCPR.com

#001: Here we go! Welcome to The Break Out Session Podcast! I'm Tom Hailey, the show host. The purpose of this podcast is to explore ways we can increase our confidence, connection and professional presence so we can achieve more, faster, with less stress. We'll do this by having conversations with achievers. These will be people who are doing things that matter and learning lessons along the way. I have a saying that goes "conversation is music to my ears" but I want these conversations to be more than entertaining. I want them to be educational and inspirational. We'll find take-a-ways that become action steps. And we'll have fun. I'm not a professional broadcaster, and I'm figuring this out as we go. We might end the year with a blooper highlight show! I'll probably post a couple shows a month, but I'll figure that out as I go along. At this age and stage of my life, I don't have five-year plans. I do six-month experiments. I welcome your ideas about how this project can be more valuable to you. I encourage you to do these three things: First, visit the website at thebreakoutsession.com or tomhailey.com. It's the same. On the Podcast page, you'll see pictures and links related to the shows. Second, sign-up for the newsletter. I think it will be a short monthly simple email recapping what we've learned. For signing up, you'll get an ebook you can download that lists the tools and resources I'm using to build The Break Our Session. In it, you might get some ideas and inspiration about doing a show of your own, or tools to help another of your projects. Third, "Like" our Facebook page. Search for The Break Out Session. I'll announce there when our first interview will be posted in February 2017. I'm looking forward to what we'll learn together!
