Welcome to the Scottsdale Vibes Podcast, I'm Alicia Haygood. This week we're talking about an exciting cultural event returning to our city this week. Scottsdale Art Week is bringing galleries, artists, and collectors from around the world to WestWorld, and today we're getting a behind-the-scenes look at what makes this international art fair so special. Scottsdale has long been known as one of the Southwest's premier arts destinations, from our galleries in Old Town to world-class museums and public art throughout the city. And this week, that reputation takes center stage once again with the return of Scottsdale Art Week, a four-day international art fair happening March 19th through the 22nd at WestWorld of Scottsdale. The event brings together 120 galleries from 15 countries, along with artists, collectors, and art lovers from across the globe. But what makes Scottsdale Art Week unique is its emphasis on the Southwest — highlighting Indigenous expression, regional influences, and the cultural stories that shape this place we call home. Joining me today are Trey Brennan and Amy Gause from Scottsdale Art Week. Amy serves as the Fair Director and has been instrumental in shaping the vision of this event, while Trey plays a key role in helping bring the experience to life. Let's chat about what visitors can expect this year, the inspiration behind the fair, and why Scottsdale is the perfect place for an international art event like this. Scottsdale Art Week runs March 19th through March 22nd at WestWorld, and it's shaping up to be an incredible celebration of art, culture, and creativity right here in our city. This episode is a great example of how Scottsdale continues to be a home for creative, unexpected, and exciting events. I'm joined by Logan Rose from Big League Wiffle Ball, also known as BLW — America's first professional wiffle ball league. What started as a backyard league during the COVID-19 pandemic has grown into a national phenomenon with city-based franchises, major tournaments, and even a World Series played at AT&T Stadium. The 2025–2026 season features 10 teams competing across the country, and some of BLW's biggest moments are happening right here in Scottsdale. This March, BLW will host postseason events, an All-Star Day, and a Home Run Derby at the Miracle League of Arizona — all while raising money to support athletes with special needs. Today we're talking about how BLW got started, why Scottsdale plays such a key role in its story, and what fans can expect when wiffle ball goes pro. Today's episode is an important one because we're diving into public safety, innovation, and what it takes to serve a growing and dynamic city like Scottsdale. I'm honored to be joined by Scottsdale Police Chief Joe Le Duc. Jesse James LeijaTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know San Antonio's very own Jesse James Leija. Jesse is a 2-time world champion boxer; having won the WBC belt in 1994 and the IBA belt in 1998. In this episode, we chat about growing up in San Antonio, and the series of events that led him to become a fighter. We also dive into a couple of his fights; especially his 4-fight series against Azuma Nelson. The Champ explains the difference between being a 'tough' fighter, and a 'smart' fighter, and then we jump into why his father was his trainer for Jesse's entire career. Along the way, Jesse James shares stories of hanging out with Sylvester Stallone, and even how he managed to sneak his way into a meeting with Muhammad Ali himself! I ask him about some of his other fights with Sugar Shane Mosely, Louie Espinoza, Arturo Gatti, and Oscar De La Hoya; before we trade opinions on the new spectacle of "boxing" involving Jake Paul, and what that is doing to the sport of boxing. Jesse James Leija is an advocate for mental health, started The Miracle League of San Antonio, owns Leija Boxing and Fitness gym, has the longest running charity golf tournament in San Antonio, and even started his own charitable foundation called The Leija Family Foundation. We touch on ALL of these things and more! Jesse James Leija has been a fixture in the city and is a name I have known for as far back as I can remember. It was an honor to speak with such a fantastic steward of my hometown. THIS IS EPISODE #500! THANK YOU, STREETWALKERS!!

Born to blue collar workers in rural Illinois, Peggy McCall-Robertson inherited a strong work ethic, and from her father gained a love of tinkering and learning how things work. Peggy served as a Youth Director for the Methodist Church in central Arkansas for nearly 20 years, followed by retail work that gave her the experience needed to develop a business plan of her own. The first Miracle League was created in Georgia in 2000 with the goal of providing opportunities for children with disabilities to play baseball, offering a huge boost to their physical and mental wellbeing. Inspired, Peggy partnered with the Little Rock Rotary Club 99 to bring the program to Arkansas. In 2006, the first Miracle League of AR season opened with Peggy as Executive Director. When she isn't organizing "the greatest game on turf", Peggy enjoys camping, cooking, and helping her husband with his own creative projects.
Send us a textBaseball journeys rarely follow a straight path, and Sean Casey's story proves just how winding and meaningful that road can be. The man known as "The Mayor" opens up about the Pittsburgh mentors who shaped his career long before he reached the majors, revealing the profound impact of figures like Joe Ringel and Frank Porco who believed in him when college scouts weren't calling. In this emotionally charged conversation, Casey takes us back to his teenage years when his father delivered the tough message that would change his life: "Nobody's coming for you." That lesson sparked a determination that led him to write 31 college recruitment letters—the final one opening the door that would eventually lead to a stellar MLB career. The podcast captures several tearful moments, including a surprise live call to Joe Ringel, the man who took teenage Casey to Three Rivers Stadium for batting practice sessions that helped him develop into a .296 hitter against lefties. When discussing his trade to his hometown Pirates, Casey's voice breaks as he describes the pride of representing Pittsburgh and seeing his family in the stands.Casey also shares fascinating insights from his recent stint as Yankees hitting coach, discussing the delicate balance between analytics and simplicity in modern baseball. His perspective on transitioning from player to coach to broadcaster offers valuable wisdom about life after playing days end.Whether recounting borrowing Manny Ramirez's bat for his first MLB hit or describing the Pittsburgh dedication to community that shaped his character, Casey's stories illuminate why baseball connections run so deep. For anyone who understands that sports careers are built on the shoulders of unsung heroes, this conversation will remind you why we fall in love with the game in the first place.Check out Hold My Cutter podcast for more conversations with baseball's most insightful personalities. On this week's edition of the Flavors of Northwest Arkansas podcast, things will be a little different, as we're going to be talking to a chef from Australia that has, literally, millions of social media followers and is going to be part-owner of a restaurant opening here. More on that in a second. But first, what a road it's been for the Mellow Moose Burger food truck of Siloam Springs! They won the Miracle League's Northwest Arkansas Burger Competition in September, giving them a Golden ticket to World Food Championships in Indianapolis. That happened this past weekend. We'll hear how it ended and hear from Adrian Lem of Mellow Moose Burgers. Now onto some somber news. Smoke and Barrel in Fayetteville is now closed. They decided to sell to someone else and announced it on social media this past weekend. We'll hear from them. If you're online and follow the top influencers in the Chinese food world, you've no doubt heard of Vincent Yeow Lim, or @DimSimLim, as his millions of social media followers know him. If you don't follow him, you might want to check out his TikTok or Instagram feeds to see what kind of food will be coming to our area. And oh, by the way, Catherine Zhang is one of his partners in this. She's a pastry chef that won Zumbo's Just Desserts on Netflix and was the youngest to do it. They'll be partnering with our guy Barry Furuseth of Blu in Bentonville. So, what is it? Where will this restaurant be? What's the meaning behind the name? Why did they decide on Northwest Arkansas and when will it open? So many questions and we'll get the answers next, right here on the Flavors of Northwest Arkansas.

Hello All! It appears people have enjoyed hearing some classic moments from my career. As long as I keep finding them, I'll keep posting. This was December 7, 2012. That would have been nearly a decade ago. I asked Gavin if we could do some sort of Holiday event to raise money for a good cause. We ended up raising money for a Women's Center. The next year we raised cash for a Miracle League field. This is the final segment of our event. I miss these days. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
