In this episode of The Breakdown with King Williams, I sit down with Tommy Andres, one-half of the producing duo behind the new Wondery Podcast limited series We Came To The Forest. We Came To The Forest explores the ongoing 'Cop City' movement in Atlanta through direct interviews with those involved in the protests, including a never-before-heard interview with Manuel Esteban Paez Terán, also known as Tortuguita, the protestor who was killed by a Georgia State Patrol officer in January 2023. In this conversation, we discuss how Tommy learned about Cop City, the controversial Atlanta Police Training Center in Southwest DeKalb County. He also shares insights on the journey to produce the podcast and what he has discovered since starting the series. Tommy also produced the award-winning King Slime podcast with fellow Atlanta-based journalists Christina Lee and George Chidi, which focuses on the Young Thug, YSL Trial, and we touch on that towards the end. This podcast is available for Wondery subscribers on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and all major podcast platforms. King Williams hosts L. Benjamin Rolsky, a professor and author, to discuss his book "The Rise and Fall of the Religious Left." Using Norman Lear as a case study, Rolsky explains his work on the intersection of religion, politics, and popular culture since the 1970s. He critiques the term "Christian nationalism," arguing it emerged post-2016 and oversimplifies conservative activism. Rolsky also discusses the complexities of evangelicalism and its political leanings, noting the influence of media and marketing. He emphasizes the need for robust academic analysis and critical thinking in understanding contemporary political dynamics. This interview references two books worth reading in addition to Dr. Rolsky's book: Nicole Hemmer's “Messengers of The Right,” a History of conservative media in America, and Kevin Kruse's “One Nation Under God: How Corporate America Invented Christian America” a look at how corporate conservatives infiltrated Christian politics. In this conversation, we talk about the history of conservative media in the US. Nicole is also the host of a popular history podcast called Past Present, which talks about the historic parallels of top news stories. We talk about its roots in anti-war activists and its anti-New Deal stance/ We talk about the rise of outlets such as Human Events, National Review, and others bringing in a socially acceptable version of conservatism, that still holds true today. This was in contrast to the brash anti-civil rights, and anti-integration ethos of the 1950s/1960s. We also talk about the role of talk radio in the 1970s leading to the growth of conservative podcasts today. In addition, this interview talks about how conservative media frames narratives and how it shapes public policy goals using media. This includes Ronald Reagan's efforts in the 1980s to eliminate general standards along the fairness doctrine and the role of the 1996 telecommunications act. We also talk about the role of former talk radio Rush Limbaugh on conservatism and the model he set forth in the 1990s. We end this conversation by talking about the role of YouTube and social media plays now in conservative media. *ALSO, my apologies on my microphone. In this interview of the King Williams Podcast, I talk to Dr. Michelle Schreiner. Dr. Schreiner is one of two candidates in the June 21st runoff to represent HD90 aka 'The Stacey Abrams' district. (Interview starts at 3:00) HD90 formerly HD89 (via the controversial fall 2021 statewide redistricting) is one of the most demographically diverse districts in metro Atlanta both racially and economically. The district includes both the city of Atlanta and DeKalb County. This district includes on the DeKalb side parts of unincorporated Decatur, Panthersville, Cedar Grove, Conley, Gresham Park, and parts of Ellenwood. While parts of Atlanta include East Lake, Kirkwood, East Atlanta, Lake Claire, Edgewood, Piney Grove, and parts of Candler Park. In this conversation, we talk about Dr. Schreiner's motivations for running, the most pressing issues of the district, and address the needs of a very diverse district. This includes the needs of south DeKalb such as the various environmental waste corridors in the area, the 'cop city' controversy happening in that part of the district, and lack of economic development. We also talk about the issues on the northern side of the district including concerns over housing affordability, bad roads, and concerns over rising violent crime. We talk about Michelle's upbringing in metro Atlanta after leaving her native Puerto Rico at a very young age as well as what it would mean to be potentially the only Latina in the state legislature this year. If you want to know more about Michelle you can visit her website https://www.michelle4georgia.com/. Or you can also check out her Instagram account or Twitter page. Also please check the Secretary of State's website to check your voter registration status.
In this episode of the King Williams Podcast, I talked to Alfred 'Shivy' Brooks. Shivy is a public school teacher, activist, and influencer who advocates for teachers in Georgia. In this interview, we talk about what life-changing event made him decide to be a public school teacher. We also talk about why men, especially Black men aren't moving into and staying in the profession long enough to make a difference. We also talk about the recent attacks by the current state GOP on stopping the accurate teaching of history and intimidating teachers through a series of new laws. Shivy also gives his thoughts on why the school board is one of the most important positions in Atlanta, as well as why there aren't any educators o the board. Please read my guest newsletter entry from Slyvia Johnson and listen to my podcast episode on Georgia's bogus CRT bills. Shivy recently ran for public office by challenge, near 20-year incumbent in the city of Atlanta last year prompted by his own students. In addition, we talk about his growing online platform of 50,000+ Instagram followers and how he advocates for educators across the country. We also talk about his now-viral t-shirt of 'I'm the teacher Fox News warns you about' from his t-shirt line Alfred's Laundry. In this interview, I talk to the AJC's Joseph Ferguson (@Joseph_Fergie). Joseph is the creator and host of the AJC's video series AJC: In Context. AJC: In Context is an explainer series about news related to metro Atlanta. It's one of the AJC's newer ventures into the digital space and is a reference of my own when creating content. In this conversation, we talk about Joseph's journey into video production, how he ended up at the AJC, and how he pitched them on creating a video series. We also talk about the creator economy, and what traditional media companies misunderstand about video. We also spend time talking about the recent acquisition of Twitter, a hub for journalists and Black creativity in Black Twitter. Including what would Joseph's strategy if he were Elon Musk as well as what the threat of ownership of Twitter means for both the journalism community and Black Twitter. We also talk about his stutter, something he's overcome to become a great creator. You can watch videos of AJC: In Context on Facebook and on YouTube. The interview starts at 2:00.
In this episode of The King Williams Podcast, I talk to my fellow Atlanta journalist, George Chidi. George is a former AJC reporter who has launched his own newsletter The Atlanta Objective. .The Atlanta Objective often covers the intersections of crime and corruption in metro Atlanta. And since last year, he has taken a focus on looking at the rise in violent crime in Atlanta. His reporting has some startling findings including that in 2021, 142 of 158 homicides were Black perpetrators on Black victims, that over 90% included a firearm, and over half were from people who were poor. We spend the beginning of the interview (starting at 3:00) to about the halfway point talking directly about the recent announcement that Atlanta rappers Young Thug, Gunna, and several members of the record label/clique YSL have been implicated in a wide-reaching set of charges related to gang activity and Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO). YSL has been a recurring series of investigations in The Atlanta Objective. In this conversation, we talk directly about misnomers in this labeling of gangs and gang violence. We also talk about the portrayal of hip hop in NYC's drill scene and media portrayals in Atlanta. We also talk about whether or not labeling YSL a 'gang' is the correct terminology. We also talk about whether or not Atlanta 'gangs' are even that, and what makes Atlanta gang culture different. We even talk about his own work, which he got wrong according to George. In addition to the political motivations of being tough on Atlanta crime, in particular, gang activity by both the Fulton County District Attorney and the state Attorney General during the 2022 election cycle. George is also the host of a quarterly Fox 5 Atlanta program, The Next Atlanta (also available on YouTube), featuring interviews with various Atlanta thought leaders. For some reason, he even thought to include me in one. He also is a contributor to the DeKalb County-centered publication Decaturish, where he has a column there as well. If you like this interview feel free to subscribe to my newsletter, iamkingwilliams.substack.com and if you want to donate, you can via my Patreon at patreon.com/iamkingwilliams.

(Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Audible) In this interview, Professor Segall and I talk about The Supreme Court, the history of the court, and its role in shaping society. We also talk about court staking, Justice Amy Coney Barrett, and the role of 'originalism', alongside her mentor Justice Antonin Scalia. We also spend a decent half of the back twenty minutes on the legacy of Clarence Thomas and Thurgood Marshall. We also talk about abortion at the end of the episode. This is a re-release of an interview series I did during last year's lockdown entitled Covid Conversations. That series featured me interviewing with other people from around the Metro Atlanta area to discuss how the newly arrived covid was affecting their businesses. This interview I chose because it pairs well with Amber Scmidtke's Covid Digest interview. So here is for the first time in an audio-only format the interview I did with Atlanta tech entrepreneur TJ Muehleman's regarding his Covid project website, The Covid Mapping Project. From 2020: TJ recently has turned his attention to creating a better data set based on public health records related to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak called The COVID Mapping Project, an aggregation of public health data from around the world and making that data easily accessible for anyone to understand. We talked about why he created the covid mapping project, problems he sees in people reporting data and how the covid mapping project is trying to make everyone more knowledgeable about the coronavirus spread. Please visit: covidmappingproject.com And you can learn more about his company The Standard Co at https://www.standardco.de/ and if you want to follow him on Twitter, @tjmule or https://twitter.com/tjmule. Back in the spring I interviewed @AmberSchmidtke, she is a Ph.D., she has the most popular Covid-19 account on Substack, amberschmidtkephd.substack.com. The reason I did not push out this interview as I thought that I had waited too long and that Covid-19 would be ending due to the availability of more vaccines. Boy was I wrong. So here is my April 2021 interview with Amber Schmidtke. Almost since the pandemic started, Amber has run her own personal substack, The COVID Digest. Which has been the #1 Substack on public health data related to tracking the spread of Covid-19. Initially starting out as an Atlanta-specific Substack, it has now branched out to cover the US.
