Puck's famed journalist-centric publishing model is changing. Sort of. The news outlet debuted in 2021 with its journalists as the company's audience-facing focal point, not the publication. People would subscribe less so to Puck than to Matthew Belloni's or Julia Ioffe's newsletters via Puck. And Puck's journalists were, in part, compensated directly for the subscribers they attracted. Lately though, Puck's newsletters have come to resemble publications in their own right. “You almost have sub-brands under Puck that are franchises anchored by core talent versus in probably that first two years, it was a newsletter anchored by core talent,” said Puck CEO Sarah Personette on the latest Digiday Podcast episode. Belloni's entertainment-oriented “What I'm Hearing” newsletter, for example, has enlisted contributors like legal expert Eriq Gardner and, most recently, former The Hollywood Reporter editor Kim Masters. Similarly, Lauren Sherman's fashion-centric “Line Sheet” regularly features entries from retail writer Sarah Shapiro and beauty journalist Rachel Strugatz. This development has coincided with Puck's paid subscriber base growing by 30% in the past year, with Personette expecting the company to become profitable this year. “Putting journalists at the center of our model still exists, but what we are trying to do, as our subscriber base has experienced incredible growth over the last few years, we want to make sure that we're rounding out the stories and we're rounding out the coverage by bringing other journalists in,” said Personette. The expanding nature of Puck's newsletters raises the question of to what extent does Puck's compensation model also have to change. Puck gained a lot of initial attention for paying bonuses to its journalists for the new subscribers their articles attract as well as for the subscribers they retain. But how's that work if an article by Masters attracts a subscriber via Belloni's newsletter? “So [Belloni] is a franchise manager, and there are different benefits to being a franchise manager. And he also is driving a ton of his own subs. And then we also want to make sure that the individuals that are contributing to that franchise also get bonus-ed,” Personette said.

While many in the fashion industry were already well-versed in the work of journalist Lauren Sherman, the early days of The Line Sheet sparked rumblings across the dinners and drinks that often define the social musings through which the industry connects. Having captured everyone's attention, she went on to launch her podcast, Fashion People, and has since amassed a dedicated audience. In this episode, Lauren shares her personal journey while helping us dissect the cultural moment we're navigating—a world fractured into countless niches yet searching for universal connections. From the evolving role of journalism in an oversaturated media landscape to the rise of authenticity as a cultural currency, Lauren offers a compelling look at what it takes to thrive in a world that rewards staying true to yourself. “There's no need to compare yourself to other people because everybody is coming from a different perspective. And so, I don't believe in objectivity in any way. I think that people who claim it exists should strive for it, but you also have to know that it's not a real thing.” - Lauren Sherman Episode Highlights: Lauren knew at a young age that she was interested in journalism, specifically fashion, but somehow ended up studying computer programming first. Her two biggest influences early on were Liz Tilberis and Jane Pratt, who were the editors of Harper's Bazaar and Sassy, respectively. The business aspect of her career in journalism was not planned, but it was the first way she found to get into the industry. Having come up during the time when conglomerates like Kering and LVMH were first taking shape, and the industry was rapidly becoming big business, she learned early on how important the business aspect of the fashion conversation actually was. Joining Fashionista during the heyday of blogging, Lauren was suddenly expected to churn out several pieces a day. It was there she learned to write without having time to pick up the phone to sources and instead relied more exclusively on her own perspective about the topics she was writing about. Despite being rooted in fashion, both The Line Sheet and Fashion People speak to broader cultural issues, from Ozempic to musical chairs with creative directors at major fashion houses. Lauren breaks down the reality behind the seismic shifts in the luxury sector and consumer behaviors shaping them. The impressive efficacy of certain creative choices is often beyond the reach of data farming and analytics platforms, and can end up getting overlooked by those who now exclusively let data govern their choices. Critical thinking is not taught in schools, and the impact of that missing link is evident in the cultural behaviors we often encounter today. According to Sherman, we live in such a fragmented culture that, to succeed, you must truly understand what's right for you and do what's right for you. Those who do that often achieve significant success. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Last night marked the return of the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, which had been on pause for a few years. Once a dominant women's underwear and lingerie brand, Victoria's Secret has struggled to keep up with modern notions of beauty and desirability... and the former CEO, Les Wexner, became embroiled in the scandal surrounding Jeffrey Epstein. Co-author Lauren Sherman  joins us to discuss her new book, Selling Sexy: Victoria's Secret and the Unraveling of an American Icon. The book was co-written with Chantal Fernandez.

Today on the show we are talking about Victoria's Secret, the retail giant that, as my guests Lauren Sherman and Chantal Fernandez write in their new book Selling Sexy: Victoria's Secret and the Unraveling of an American Icon, “defined a generation's idea of sexy.” Selling Sexy is out October 8 and tells the story of a company that, at its peak, pulled in $8 billion in annual sales. We talk in today's episode about Les Wexner, what Victoria's Secret was like at its apex, its ubiquitous presence in malls, its revolutionizing of bras and underwear, its Angels, and its fashion show. We talk about how Victoria's Secret fit into the business conversation (including a look into its business model), how Victoria's Secret fit into the fashion conversation, and how Victoria's Secret fit into womanhood and girlhood for a generation of women, including myself. We also talk about its downfall, from an American icon to where it is today. How is Victoria's Secret doing today, you may ask? Well, you'll have to listen to find out. Here to guide us through it all is Lauren Sherman, who hosts one of my favorite podcasts, “Fashion People.” Lauren has been reporting on the fashion industry for more than 15 years and is a special correspondent at Puck. Prior to that appointment, she was Business of Fashion's chief correspondent, and before that a reporter at Forbes. You may have seen her work in The Wall Street Journal, Fast Company, Women's Health, or The New York Times. Chantal Fernandez is a writer that covers fashion, retail, luxury, and beauty with a focus on business and culture. She is currently a features writer at New York Magazine's The Cut, which I am completely obsessed with and read every day. She, like Lauren, is a Business of Fashion alum, where she was a former senior reporter. You may have read Chantal in The New York Times, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, or The Financial Times, and these two women are just about as knowledgeable and impressive as it gets. I enjoyed this book and this conversation so much. Take a listen.   Selling Sexy: Victoria's Secret and the Unraveling of an American Icon by Lauren Sherman and Chantal Fernandez
