My guests for this episode introduce us to an updated version a type of organization which has been around since the earl 1900s, but which most of us have never heard of or know anything about. The type of organization is a Settlement House. The updated version is modeled in a Settlement House one of my guests founded and the other has helped strengthen and maintain. It is called The Good Neighbor House and is located in Waco, Texas. As my guests will discuss, in its updated version, a Settlement House offers local communities, towns, and cities a resource to strengthen the peaceful bonds of it residence; it offers our nation a resource to strengthen the practice of our democracy; and it offers Christian churches a resource for fulfilling a key mission and mandate of the Church's work--that of showing hospitality to the stranger. In considering the current challenges of both our nation and the churches in the U.S., Settlement Houses can provide a relevant and needed contribution, and are thus something worth knowing more about and considering. The founder of the Good Neighbor House, Dr. Laine Scales, has been on this show before. Laine is Professor and PhD Program Co-Director for the Diana R. Garland School of Social Work. She completed 15 years as Associate Dean in Baylor's Graduate School from 2004-2019. Her scholarly work led to her appointment as co-director of Baptist Scholars International Roundtable (BSIR). Laine is the author of All That Fits a Woman: Training Southern Baptist Women for Charity and Mission, 1907-1926 and co-author/co-editor of several works, including the 6th Edition of Christianity and Social Work: Readings in the Integration of Christian Faith and Social Work Practice, and Christian Faith and University Life: Stewards of the Academy. Her research interests include doctoral education, history of Baptist women in social work and missions, and rural social work. Laine's research on historical settlement houses led her to establish Good Neighbor Settlement House in Waco Texas, a social innovation experiment in nurturing community through an intergenerational experience of the arts, music, education, recreation, and worship. Tyler Mowry is a PhD candidate and in the Department of Religion and a Content Specialist on the Learning Design team at Baylor University. He has participated in a number of community development efforts, including K–12 educational advocacy in Bogotá, Colombia and West Chicago, IL, and urban agricultural development in East Atlanta, GA. Tyler is a member of the board of trustees and the maintenance team at the Good Neighbor House, and his family and church are frequent users of the space. You can learn more about Good Neighbor House in an article title, "Good Neighbor House: Reimagining Settlement Houses as a Response to Contemporary Community Challenges," in Chapter 3 of Christianity and Social Work: Readings on the Integration of Christian Faith and Social Work Practice, Fifth Ed., by T. Laine Scales and Michael S. Kelly.  The intro and outro music for this episode is from a clip of a song called 'Father Let Your Kingdom Come' which is found on The Porter's Gate Worship Project Work Songs album and is used by permission by The Porter's Gate Worship Project.

Monte Hewett Homes: Emphasizing the Attachment to Place

President Monte Hewett with Monte Hewett Homes joins the Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio podcast. He sits down with the President of Denim Marketing and Show Host Carol Morgan to discuss the company's rise in mixed-use development and currently selling opportunities. At just 16 years old, Hewett began working with a focus on framework and placing the first nail in his celebrated homebuilding career. He attended Colorado State University for the construction management program and, after graduating, moved to Dallas, Texas, in 1984. In Texas, it was typical for a builder to be production-oriented, unlike in Georgia. Over time, he moved to better locations and built better products, eventually landing in the Atlanta market. In the 1990s, Hewett decided to be an infill builder. During this time, he observed markets in North Buckhead, Smyrna, Vinings, and, during the recession, Decatur, Roswell and Alpharetta to get a clear picture of the local demographic. He noted that many homebuyers were attached to the idea of a “place” and the amenities and walkability offered in that location. Locations such as Avalon in Alpharetta or downtown Roswell provide walkability, green space and all the tools necessary to construct a sense of place for homebuyers to call home through the generations. By the year 2010, Hewett was mainly focusing on creating mixed-use developments to meet this market need. His first project was Palisades at Milton Park in Alpharetta, followed by Avalon and Halcyon in Alpharetta, Madison Yards in Reynoldstown and more. Hewett noted that after the recession, it took more work to replicate the locations and prices he secured and had to switch strategies. The company shifted its focus on product pricing to create work-live-play communities that are more cost-efficient. Hewett said, “It's a big accomplishment to be able to go and change the culture of the company and emphasize time and budgets. It feels good.” Located near Emory, Monte Hewett Homes is currently working on Downing Park, a collection of 13 townhomes off Ponce de Leon Avenue priced from $2 million. Hewett also shared that he recently closed on a mixed-use project called Water Park, which is coming soon to Watkinsville, located 15 minutes outside of Athens. The project will feature 21 townhomes, 46 single-family opportunities and 20,000+ square feet of office, retail and food and beverage space. The community will also feature a baseball and basketball training facility. The builder is also currently selling townhomes starting at $959,900 at Interlock in West Midtown, townhomes starting in the high $500,000s at The Harman in East Atlanta and single-level flats and two-story condominium homes starting in the high $600,000s at Findley Row in Alpharetta. Olajuwon Ajanaku, the Founder of Eastside Golf grew up in East Atlanta. He gained a golf scholarship to Morehouse College and won a National Championship alongside his co-founder, Earl Cooper. After graduating with a degree in accounting, he worked in Commercial Finance for many years. Olajuwon left the corporate world to fully embark on entrepreneurship that would support his own dream of turning pro in golf. As a result, Eastside Golf was formed. Earl Cooper is a PGA Professional and is currently ranked as one of the best young teachers in America by Golf Digest. He has worked as the first African American golf professional at Detroit Golf Club and Wilmington Country Club. He graduated from Morehouse College where him and Olajuwon played on the golf team and won a National Championship.   Olajuwon and Earl had a number of amazing insights during our conversation. Some of them include: “I'm the type of person where I don't step into something until I really know what's going on” – Earl (17:10). “Tunnel vision hasn't worked for us very well” – Earl (17:50) “If you're going to make a logo of a black man, you have to explain, market, design, everything that comes with that” – Olajuwon (20:30). “It starts the conversation at country clubs” – Olajuwon (22:40). “With us, with our logo, I talk about everything that comes with it” – Olajuwon (23:20) “Open the door for some more people, open the door for the youth, open the door for the people that look just like the [Eastside Golf] logo” – Olajuwon (24:10) “We get to tell those stories that no other golf company can tell” – Olajuwon (24:20). “[Authenticity is] truly being yourself in all spaces” – Earl (24:50). “For me there's always been this love of the game and wanting to share it with people, that's why I love to teach” – Earl (26:00). “In the world of golf, in my experience particularly, they have all these rules and boxes that you have to check where it stifles creativity, and everyone looks the same” – Earl (27:00). “At the end of the day, it's still just grass” – Earl (28:15) “A lot of the morals and values you get from the golf course help you in life” – Olajuwon (29:05). “There's a solution for everything. It's all about how you go about planning, how you go about getting prepared for that actual problem” – Olajuwon (30:00). “Golf raised me” – Olajuwon (30:35). “You can be yourself when you come here” – Olajuwon (31:30). “Just because you don't look like everybody, walk like everybody, talk like everybody, doesn't mean you can't be a great golfer” – Olajuwon (32:30). “I'm hungry. I have a point to prove” – Olajuwon (38:15). “We're literally explaining to the world that there's always a solution for anything that you want to achieve, whether it's personal goals or changing anything in the world that needs improvement” – Olajuwon (39:40). “It's still going to be about how you're treating people… it's never going to be about ‘us' anymore. It's about how can we bring people in to buy in and work their asses off” - Earl (41:40). “You have to communicate because things are going to change every day” – Earl (42:30). “It's never just going to be one person or one role. It's truly a unit” – Earl (44:25). “We have an opportunity to change the game. We want to be measured on the impact that we have” – Earl (45:55). “How do we continue to remove barriers so people feel like this game is for them” – Earl (46:45). “The issue isn't golf… it is the way the game is being taught” – Earl (47:10). “Eastside Golf will make huge impact across the globe if we just continue to believe in ourselves, stay authentic, and play this game the way we know how “ – Olajuwon (55:10) “We're not an anomaly. There are so many other kids that think similar to us that go to HBCU's that don't get the opportunity. They're just overlooked” – Olajuwon (55:40). “Where a lot of other companies are more worried about the politics and the bottom line, our focus is elsewhere” – Olajuwon (56:20). “Work hard and go for everything you know you deserve” – Olajuwon (1:02:30). “There's always an analogy or there's always a certain way you can think about something, but you just have to take it and make it yours” – Olajuwon (1:03:05).   Additionally, you can follow Olajuwon and Earl on Instagram, and also check out the Eastside Golf website here and the Eastside Golf Twitter page here!
