George Chidi, journalist with The Guardian, Rolling Stone and the man behind The Atlanta Objective, sat in on recent town halls hosted by Reps. Nikema Willilams and Hank Johnson and came away with more questions than answers - not unlike their constituents. He and I had a free-wheeling conversation about a lot of what's going on, politically. Preparing the American population for Medicaid cuts shuttering nursing homes and families having to take their loved ones in ... the "fajita sizzle" media manipulation with ICE raids not adding up in gaudy numbers despite the salacious headlines ... news nuggets he brought that included the date we learn the fate of Rep. Williams as head of the Georgia Democratic Party ... his sense that there's a bubbling scandal in Atlanta City Hall ... his FOIA request for benign documents from Fulton District Attorney Fani Willis.Chidi - like many of us - is wondering who's going to step up and "do something!" to take on MAGA. Hear us discuss all that and project towards 2026 and beyond (if it even matters) ... Oh, and I promised I'd let y'all know: Georgia is looking for a freelance writer (or multiple) to help him cover the stories he's known for covering in the Atlanta Objective. If you're interested, drop him an email: george@atlantanext.com

In this episode of The Breakdown with King Williams, I sit down with Tommy Andres, one-half of the producing duo behind the new Wondery Podcast limited series We Came To The Forest. We Came To The Forest explores the ongoing 'Cop City' movement in Atlanta through direct interviews with those involved in the protests, including a never-before-heard interview with Manuel Esteban Paez Terán, also known as Tortuguita, the protestor who was killed by a Georgia State Patrol officer in January 2023.  In this conversation, we discuss how Tommy learned about Cop City, the controversial Atlanta Police Training Center in Southwest DeKalb County. He also shares insights on the journey to produce the podcast and what he has discovered since starting the series.  Tommy also produced the award-winning King Slime podcast with fellow Atlanta-based journalists Christina Lee and George Chidi, which focuses on the Young Thug, YSL Trial, and we touch on that towards the end.  This podcast is available for Wondery subscribers on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and all major podcast platforms. If you haven't already, please subscribe to my podcast and newsletter at iamkingwilliams.substack.com.

The headline for today's podcast came from the lips of Brit Hume on Fox News, and if that doesn't set the table for the conversation today, maybe it was the handshake she charged towards Donald to give well past midway on the stage to pronounce her name correctly for him. He never said her name; he invoked Joe Biden several times, but never once said her name. George Chidi from The Atlanta Objective and Melita Easters, executive director at the Georgia WIN List join me today for some post-debate analysis. On the 23rd anniversary of 9/11, it's Melita - mother of a female Naval Academy graduate who was at Annapolis that day - who reminds us all the importance of global standing for our country. That's a noteworthy distinction to make the morning after the Vice President drew stark contrasts between she and President Biden's standing and what world leaders think of one Donald John Trump.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz indeed was the choice VP Kamala Harris made (as I asserted should be the case back on July 29th) to be her running mate, and his first test - accepting and giving his first stump speech - didn't disappoint. [Transcript here] Well, the New York Times editorial board mostly approved, anyway, but a raucous crowd of 12,000-plus in Philadelphia sopped it up. Near-immediate right wing attacks on his Congressional record, his time as governor, and even his 24-year National Guard service came, and are mostly eviscerated by historical context and facts as we now know them, but we'll give them their time and fact-checking, here, too. George Chidi from 'The Atlanta Objective' joined me to provide context. Oh I forgot the 'antisemitism' swipes; Mehdi Hassan quickly wiped those out last night on CNN. Also, it turns out Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro 'wrestled' with even wanting the job. '

Now that we're (hopefully) in the final hours of "Aquapocalypse" (or are we going with "Watergeddeon?"), city council had the chance yesterday to grill its watershed commissioner, Al Wiggins, Jr., yesterday, and for the most part, the engagement was polite - with a lot of deserved commendation for the department's employees' putting in the work. That said, communications was the key gripe, and it extends to the mayor, per Bill Torpy at the AJC. Local media finally picked up on Mayor Dickens' Memphis trip in the throes of the water crisis after George Chidi and I discussed it on this show (maybe local journos are paying attention to me?) I got to catch up with Democratic Socialist - and Democratic nominee for Georgia's House district #42 - Gabriel Sanchez today for an extended Q&A as well. He upset Rep. Teri Anulwicz in the party's primary last month, so now that he's in "general election" mode, learn with me what events shaped this "under-30" candidate ideology and platform.

Meanwhile, questions arise as to why Mayor Andre Dickens knew of the break and still got on a plane headed to Memphis for a fundraiser for his re-election. Also, why is he fundraising in Memphis at all? Lastly, the matter-of-fact sports pundit Colin Cowherd ventured into politics for just under 9 minutes on his podcast last week and gave about the most succinct post-conviction response after former President Donald Trump was found guilty by a jury of his peers on 34 charges in New York last week. When 16 Georgia Republicans met at the state Capitol on Dec. 14, 2020, they cast Electoral College votes for Donald Trump, who had not won the state's presidential election. The 16th episode of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Breakdown podcast – “The Trump Grand Jury” — revisits what happened that day and the consequences going forward. The false electors cast their votes the same day 16 Democrats, the official Electoral College electors, publicly cast votes for the man who'd been certified as the victor: President Joe Biden. Fulton County prosecutors heading the special purpose grand jury investigation of former president Trump and his allies have notified the 16 fake electors that they are targets of the probe. This means they could be criminally charged for what they did. In the episode “The Fake Electors,” Breakdown hears from three reporters — the AJC's Greg Bluestein, Channel 2 Action News' Richard Elliot and independent journalist George Chidi — who stumbled across the GOP meeting where the GOP “electors” cast votes that were later sent to Congress and the National Archives. The podcast also interviews legal experts who are closely following the case and who give their takes on what occurred. Among those members of the phony slate of Republican electors trying to overturn Biden's victory was state Sen. Burt Jones, the GOP nominee for lieutenant governor. This summer, Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney handed Jones a victory by disqualifying the Fulton DA's office from further investigating him because District Attorney Fani Willis hosted a fundraiser for Jones' opponent, Democrat Charlie Bailey. But Jones is not in the clear yet. The Prosecuting Attorneys Council of Georgia now has jurisdiction and could appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Jones. This means Jones, who is leading in the polls in the race for lieutenant governor, could face a possible indictment. The last two times a new president confronted his first midterm election, it turned out to be a wave year for the opposition party. 2022 is confounding that pattern, with Democrats slightly favored to hold the Senate and Republicans slightly favored to take the House. Journalists Jon Ralston and George Chidi join Ryan Grim to discuss two potentially pivotal states, Nevada and Georgia, where tight races for the Senate are underway.https://join.theintercept.com/donate/now Hosted on Acast. Hey Identifier, #youngthug #gunna #rico https://www.gq.com/story/young-thug-gunna-rico-case-update-bond-denied Court proceedings for the colossal, 56-count RICO case against Young Thug and his YSL collective are underway in Georgia, where initial pretrial release proceedings are beginning to give us a sense of the prosecution's approach, which includes using Thug and Gunna's song lyrics and social media posts. Here's what to know from the reporting around the trial, as well as a sense of what may come next. A police shooting could have been the case's inciting incident. In an interview with DJ Vlad, journalist George Chidi, who covers crime in Atlanta and has reported on Thug and his associates, claimed that YSL member Big Bhris shooting a police officer “set off the chain” of events leading to the arrests. Chidi also said he believes Thug “was aware that there was legal trouble brewing, that the cops were looking at him.” Leave us a Voice Mail or Support https://anchor.fm/the-identity-booth/message https://anchor.fm/the-identity-booth/support Sub to the channel here https://www.twitch.tv/theidentitybooth Donate https://streamlabs.com/projecteto/tip The Goal: Try to Identify with you as you try to Identify with me. In this episode of The King Williams Podcast, I talk to my fellow Atlanta journalist, George Chidi. George is a former AJC reporter who has launched his own newsletter The Atlanta Objective. .The Atlanta Objective often covers the intersections of crime and corruption in metro Atlanta. And since last year, he has taken a focus on looking at the rise in violent crime in Atlanta. His reporting has some startling findings including that in 2021, 142 of 158 homicides were Black perpetrators on Black victims, that over 90% included a firearm, and over half were from people who were poor. We spend the beginning of the interview (starting at 3:00) to about the halfway point talking directly about the recent announcement that Atlanta rappers Young Thug, Gunna, and several members of the record label/clique YSL have been implicated in a wide-reaching set of charges related to gang activity and Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO). YSL has been a recurring series of investigations in The Atlanta Objective. In this conversation, we talk directly about misnomers in this labeling of gangs and gang violence. We also talk about the portrayal of hip hop in NYC's drill scene and media portrayals in Atlanta. We also talk about whether or not labeling YSL a 'gang' is the correct terminology. We also talk about whether or not Atlanta 'gangs' are even that, and what makes Atlanta gang culture different. We even talk about his own work, which he got wrong according to George. In addition to the political motivations of being tough on Atlanta crime, in particular, gang activity by both the Fulton County District Attorney and the state Attorney General during the 2022 election cycle. George is also the host of a quarterly Fox 5 Atlanta program, The Next Atlanta (also available on YouTube), featuring interviews with various Atlanta thought leaders. For some reason, he even thought to include me in one. He also is a contributor to the DeKalb County-centered publication Decaturish, where he has a column there as well. Jurors in the trial of three men accused of killing Ahmaud Arbery began deliberations Tuesday. Last week, a jury acquitted Kyle Rittenhouse of all charges, including two counts of homicide. This week on Intercepted: We discuss the details of these two cases, how they differ, and the questions they raise about the normalization of violence in the U.S. On Friday, Rittenhouse, the teenager who killed two protesters and injured a third at a Black Lives Matter protest, was found not guilty on all charges. Meanwhile, the trial for three men charged with the murder of Ahmaud Arbery — Gregory McMichael, Travis McMichael, and William Bryan — was wrapping up. The Intercept's Washington Editor Nausicaa Renner is joined by George Chidi, a writer for the Atlanta Objective and contributor to The Intercept, and Robert Mackey, a senior writer for The Intercept. Renner, Chidi, and Mackey break down the Rittenhouse verdict, the video evidence presented during the trial, and bigger questions about what this means for the future of protesting, the far right, and racism in the U.S. join.theintercept.com/donate/now See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
