Join the Shutter Brothers, Kevin and Kelley Lane, as they journey ever onward toward a return to film photography. Each new episode will feature specific film related topics, such as cameras, film selection, home processing, and photography techniques, and the brothers will attempt to answer your qu…
The Shutter Brothers are waxing nostalgic about the old days of local camera and photography shops - and that's easy for them to do, because Kevin spent many happy hours hanging out in them, and Wayne actually work in and owned one. All we can say is "you should have been there," because it was a magical as you would expect - if you are as crazy about cameras as we are. The official start of summer is just days away, and both Wayne and Kevin are thinking about travel photography and (of course) travel film cameras. So, Wayne gives a run down of his recent acquistion the Fuji GS645 Professional Wide 60 medium format rangefinder camera and how it might be a good choice for travel photography. Meanwhile, Kevin is preparing for his first ever trip to California by choosing a camera to take along. You guessed it, it's his Leica M2. What is your go to travel film camera? The Shutter Brothers are excited about a photowalk that will take place in Chattanooga on August 9-12 involving many of your favorite film photography podcasters. Listen for details. Oh, and we also give away a Minolta Maxxum XTsi AF 35mm AF camera complete with a Minolta AF 35-70mm f4 zoom lens. As always, we'd love to hear from our listeners, so drop us a line at unclejonesyscameras@gmail.com and tell us abour your photography. Also, you can follow us on Facebook and Instagram, and feel free to leave your feedback there. And don't forget to check out our show notes. Until next time . . . Happy Photography!
The Shutter Brothers (Wayne and Kevin) are back and ready to talk about photobooks. Kevin has recently become acquainted with the published work of the American photographer, Robert Adams, and in particular his book, Summer Nights, Walking. Having found several YouTube about Summer Nights, Walking, Kevin made the decision to find a copy and purchase it, and now he is able to view the photographs in the manner Robert Adams intended - in a finely published book. Does this matter? Listen to find out. Next, the Shutter Bros. discuss the concept of revisiting past photographic efferts and the good things that might result. Whether it be revisiting a subject, a darkroom print, or even a piece of grear, sometimes the passage of time alone can be worth the effort and produces a 'remake' that becomes the keeper. Kevin wants to give a big shout out to listener's Todd and Jason for generaouly sending him several darkroom prints over the past year or so. And speaking of sharing, Kevin is giving away his Minolta Maxxum XTsi 35mm camera paired with a Maxxum AF 35-70mm f4 zoom lens to a lucky listener. Finally, Wayne and Kevin have decided on a location for the 4th Annual Photowalk with the Shutter Brothers. You can enter the contest and/or send us comments, questions, tips, reviews, and stories to unclejonesyscameras@gmail.com. You also can find us on Facebook and Instagram, and feel free to leave your feedback there. Until next time . . . Happy Photography!
The Shutter Brothers are back fresh from an early morning photowalk to Richey Ridge Falls (near Soddy Daisy, Tennessee) and are ready to share their recent experiences photographing both together and also with a group of fellow film photography podcasters at Old Car City in White, Georgia. Along the way, Wayne and Kevin disuss ideas for the 4th Annual Photowalk with the Shutter Brothers. It all starts with getting out with your camera ends with having a photograph to share. Ane speaking of sharing, Wayne is sharing some of his photography at the Annual Photography Exhibit & Competition at the Arts Center in Athens, Tennessee. The show is presented by the Athens Area Council for the Arts and runs from March 24 to May 30, 2025. If you live anywhere near East Tennessee, then make the trip to Athens to check out Wayne's work. Now that Kevin has the Leica M2 he's wanted for so long, it didn't take long for him to think about adding a 35mm lens to his kit. Actually, he already has a Leica 35mm lens, but it is a screwmount Elmar f3.5. Can it be used with a Leica M camera? The answer is "yes," if you have a LTM to M mount adapter. Leica made them back in the day, and now they are made cheaply in China. But just how compatible are they. Find out in the show. it's spring, and that means time for some de-cluttering. So, Kevin is giving away a camera! It's a fully functional Minolta Maxxum XTsi with a Minolta AF 35-70mm f4 zoom lens. It's the camera Kevin used for color photography on his Alaskan cruise last September, and now it can be yours. You can enter by email at unclejonesyscameras@gmail.com. Once agaiin our listeners chime in with some great email. We'd love to hear from you, too. Happy Photography! Wayne's photography can be seen at The Arts Center in Athens, Tennessee through May 30, 2025. Gegory Davis (The Naked Photographer) created two YouTube vieos about his experience with the Intrepid Enlarger, which used LED light to emulate contrast filters. https://youtu.be/Rqq_wwrZxk0?si=3JEXYBVQje9gBS3S https://youtu.be/bp7SN4ua1cw?si=XFeM1J4uo6lK3B_h
Wel it finally happened. Kevin now owns a Leica M2 after an unexpected local ad pops up. Not an impluse buy, mind you, as his search for the right M2 and the right time to buy it has been years in the making. but to say that Kevin is excited is quite the understatement. Meanwhile, Wayne has been playing with a compact German designed camera of his own, the Rollei 35. And compact doesn't really describe just how small this full frame 35mm rangefinder camera is. Ergonomic it is not, but could Wayne like it anyway? After some show and tell, the Shutter Brothers dive into some listener feedback, and once again, we all learn something in the process. We are thankful for our listeners, and we love hearing from them. So, please consider sending us an email (unclejonesyscameras@gmail.com) or posting a comment on our Instagram or Facebook pages (@UJCpodcast). And as always, you can find our show notes at https://unclejonesyscameras.blogspot.com. Happy Photography!
The Shutter Brothers are back with the first show of 2025, and its time to read some of the listener feedback that's in the UJC mailbag. Our listeners have lots of great questions and tips for us on topics like the best ways to meter with and without a light meter and the importance of shooting digital images in RAW format. And two of our listeners weigh in on why Kevin (who, as you no doubt know, has red green color blindness) can see colors more accurately when they appear on a screen as opposed to seeing them in person. We love the feedback we get from our listeners, and we will have more listener questions in our next show. Meanwhile, both Wayne has been having unexpected troubles with hs film development process. As you know, Wayne develops his Ilford FP4+ 4x5 inch film sheets in a self-mixed modified Caffenol CL developer. This highly compensating process is cental to getting the negatives to which he is accustomed, namely detail in both shadows and highlights. This results in negatives that, because they contain all the important "information," are easier to print. However, Wayne's last two batches have had brown streaks and over developed highlights. Wayne wants to know why and what he can do about it. you can always reach the Shutter Brothers at unclejonesyscameras@gmail.com or at our Facebook and Instagram pagers (@UCJpodcast). Happy Photography!
The Shutter Brothers are back with their last show of 2024! Wayne and Kevn recap their 2024 Photowalk with the Shutter Brothers, dive into some darkroom tips, discuss some holiday photography ideas, and read some listener email. Thanks for listening, and Happy Photography!
The Shutter Brothers are in improvisation mode for this impromptu yet informative show with a full range of film photography related topics. And yes, they always have some "showing and telling" to do. Wayne begins with a discussion of his Canon Canonet QL17 G3, an excellent little compact 35mm rangfinder camera (often called "The Poor Man's Leica"). When this very capable camera is paired with the Canon Canolite D flash, it produces some of the best flash photography the Bros. have ever seen. Wayne explains how in the show. Meanwhile, Kevin reveals what camera he bought after declaring his Wisner 4x5 would be the last camera he would ever buy? Would you believe it was a DSLR? Listen to the show to learn what and why. As usual, our listeners contribute some excellent questions and comments on topics ranging from how a camera's depth of field preview feature works to ideas for macro photography on the cheap. Show notes for this and all our shows can be found at www.unclejonesyscameras.blogspot.com, and we hope you will check our blog site out. And please follow us on Facebook and Instagram by searching @UJCPodcast. Until next time, Happy Photography!
The 3rd Annual Photowalk with the Shutter Brothers is just around the corner, and both Kevin and Wayne are getting ready for a fantastic day of photography and fun. It all happens on Saturday, October 26 at Fort Southwest Point in Kingston, Tennessee. Hundreds of late 18th centery military and civilian reenactors will converge for Kingston's Living History Reenactment Weekend to celebrate the city's 225th birthday, providing a unique photographic opportunity. All the details are in the podcast, including what cameras Kevin and Wayne will be using. And speakig of choices, Kevin must decide which of three 50mm lenses to use for the photowalk. Is one better than the other? Of course, Wayne has some great advice for testing lenses. Meanwhile, Kevin has been learning how to make better scans of his color negatives. Listen to find out what software he's been using. Finally, Kevin and Wayne read some great listener email. You can always contribute to the show by sending your input to unclejonesyscameras@gmail.com. And check out our show notes at www.unclejonesyscameras.blogspot.com. See you at the photowalk, and Happy Photography!
The Shutter Brothers are in the studio - and so is Wayne's new camera! And what a camera it is! The Canon VI-L is as impressive a 35mm meter-less mechanical shutter rangefinder camera we've ever seen. Could it be better than a Leica? Listen and find out. Meanwhile, Kevin is back from his amazing Alaskan cruise with six and a half rolls of exposed film. Listen for a report on how his two SLR cameras and three lenses performed on the 2000 mile journey. Next, the Shutter Bros read some listener questions about focus loupes and stand development, the latter of which serves as a chance to discuss Wayne's updated Caffenol CL formula. Both Wayne and Kevin have used it with 4x5 sheet film with excellent results, but would it work with roll film? Wayne's Leica-busting Canon VI-L isn't the only camera Wayne had been testing out lately. The Goerz Minicord is one of the most unique cameras we've ever seen. It's a subminiature twin lens reflex camera that uses double perforated 16mm film. Was it intended to be used as a spy camera? We've got opinions, as usual. Fiinally, Wayne and Kevin preview our 3rd Annual Photowalk with the Shutter Brothers, which is going to happen on Saturday, October 26, at Fort Southwest Point near Kingston, Tennessee. The city of Kingston will be celebrating its 225th birthday with period military reenactments, and the photography opportunities will be numberous and rich. No matter what kind of camera you bring, you will have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to make interesting photographs, as well as connect with other photographers. We hope to see you there. As always, our show notes can be found at www.unclejonesyscameras.logspot.com. Happy Photography!
If you have a camera with an automatic exposure mode (such as aperture or shutter priority), you may have wondered about that dial on your camera with +1 +2 and -1 -2? That dial is the way you access your camera's exposure compensation, and knowing how to use it will make you a better photographer. Shutter Brothers Wayne and Kevin do a deep dive into how exposure comensation works and when you should use it. Meanwhile, Kevin shares his thoughts about his opportunity to use his 'dream' camera. Was it a positive experience? Will Kevin be shelling out some big bucks? Or, is there a greater lesson to be learned here? Listen to find out. Next, Wayne and Kevin get philisophical again and share some of the deep 'dark' thoughts they have been having lately with "Thoughts from the Dark(room)." If you've been having some deep thoughts about your photography lately, you can share them with us by email (unclejonesyscameras@gmail.com), Instagram (@UJCPodcast) or Facebook (also @UJCPodcast). We'e love to hear from you! Happy Photography!
We all love taking pictures, but what happens next? Is there life after a screen goes black? There is if you get your photography on the wall. In this show, the Shutter Brothers discuss matting, framing, and displaying your photography. From buying premade mats and frames to making your own, Kevin and Wayne break it down for you. Once again, the US is experiencing record heat, so let's talk about 'hot photography in the summertime!' Wayne has some tips on how to protect your film and gear from the heat. Our third segment is listener feedback, and we have some great questions from listeners Chris, Sam, and Jake. In our final segment, Snapshots, the Shutter Brothers do quick takes on a brand new photography newspaper (yes, we said newspaper!) Also, Kevin may have purchased his last camera. And finally, our 3rd Annual Photowalk with the Shutter Brothers is less than four months away! Thanks for listening, and Happy Photography!
After a fun morning of photography, the Shutter Brothers are back to the podcast table - and Kevin has questions! Lately, he's been in the darkroom trying out fiber based paper for the first time, and he has much to learn about the differences between resin coated and fiber based paper when it comes to exposing, developing, fixing, washing, and drying processes. Fortunately, Wayne has been printing on FB paper for decades, so get ready to learn, everybody! The look and feel of FB paper makes mastering the learning curve worth it. Kevin also reviews a fine photo book, New York Changing: Revisiting Berenice Abbott's New York by Douglas Levere. Berenice Abbott had a long and very successful photography career and is well known for her documentary photography of 1930's New York City. Levere attempts to rephotograph Abbott's subjects to demonstrate the changes time has brought about, and the book contains many side by side comparisons of both Abbott's and Levere's photography. Anyone who has interest in urban large format photgraphy will enjoy it very much! Next, Wayne leads a discussion about Edward Weston's quote, "To photograph a rock, have it look like a rock, but be more than a rock." Exactly how does a developing phoographer begin to make images that express feelings or tell stories? Wayne has some practical and useful tips. Don't forget about our 3rd Annual Photowalk with the Shutter Brothers, which will happen on Saturday, October 26, at Fort Southwest Point in Kingston, Tennessee. If you've ever thought about photographing a military reenactment, this is your chance. There will be hundreds of reenactors patroling the reconstructed Fort Southwest Point providing ample photographic opportunities. Mark your calendar! Our show notes can be found at https://unclejonesyscameras.blogspot.com. Happy Photography!
The Shutter Brothers have a take on camera shake, so ready steady go! Our listener email offers some advice on how to avoid camera shake and get sharp images with handheld camera. Also, the Bros. have some advice to a listener who is ready to develop fim for the first time. Next, Wayne and Kevin read some listener-submitted messages on postcard sized darkroom prints. And one of those prints came with a special gift for Kevin: a Minolta Maxxum XTsi camera body for Kevin to use on his Alaskan cruise in September. Our listeners are truly the best! Happy Photography!
The two Shutter Brothers are talking twos! First, Kevin gets a breakdown from Wayne regarding the pros and cons of various camera pairs for his forthcoming Alaskan cruise in September. Why two? Because Kevin wants to shoot two films, color and b&w on this trip. But Kevin likes to travel light, so the gear has to be right (Hey, we Shutter Bros can rhyme too!) Next, dueces run wild with twin lens reflex cameras. Two viewing lenses, two taking lenses, etc. Kevin has been using his Rolleicord Va a lot lately, but there a problem: camera shake! Kevin gets fuzzy shots when handholding the camera (but not when it's on a tripod). Could the design and location of the Rolleicord's shutter release be the culprit? To investigate, Wayne gathers his quartet of TLRs for comparison (and he has some cool ones!) and makes a suggestion for a solution. Do you like slide shows? Want to double your fun? Wayne has something for you: a Stereo Vivid 3D slide projector with screen, extra bulbs, and a collection of 3D viewing glasses. It could be yours! Finally, we're already making plans for our 3rd Annual Photowalk with The Shutter Brothers on October 26, 2024. Mark you calendars! Happy Photography!
Most people find a lot of junk in their closet, but not Shutter Brother Wayne. He's been doing some spring cleaning lately, and what he found definitely is not junk. How about a Stereo Realist? And a stereo projector? Some stereo card mounts? A viewer? Imagine the cool slides shows at the Setser house Wayne has been using handheld cameras a lot lately, especially his Noblex panoramic camera. Since the Noblex doesn't have a strap and must be held with both hands, Wayne could use a third hand to hold his handheld light meter. Or, he could find a meter that fits one his hand. And he did! The Reveni Labs Incident Meter straps on the the back of Wayne's hand stays there. Also, just a flip of a switch and a turn of the hand, and it becomes a reflective meter. Very handy! Next, our faithful and clever listeners take over with some great questions, comments, and tips. And one of those questions leads us into a light meter deep dive. Reflective? Incident? Spot? No meter? We've got it covered. We finish with more talk of our Third Annual Photowalk with Wayne and Kevin, which will happen in October. Happy Photography!
Brand new year - Brand new show! And the Shutter Brothers are ready for it!! First, we have some great listener input about film testing and negative storage. Next, a listener asks us what happens when our photography inspiration goes "Poof!" Both Wayne and Kevin share their advice on how to get your photography mojo back. Both Wayne and Kevin are going on cruises this year, so we ask our listeners the question, "What camera would be best for a vacation cruise?" If you've got suggestions, please email us (unclejonesyscameras@gmail.com) or leave a comment on our Facebook page (@ujcpodcast). Finally, we've got ideas regarding our 2024 Photowalk. It's going to be fun! Happy Photography!
The Shutters Brothers wish you the happiest of holidays and the happiest of holiday photography, and to that end, Wayne and Kevin share their tips on how to best capture the spirit of the season on film (or sensor!) And since many of us use flash to make things merry and bright, Wayne does a deep dive on flash guide numbers and how to make them work for you. The Bros. also answer some listener email, discuss the Platypus, a cool 4x5 sheet film drying rack from Simon Forster, and look forward some photographic goals for 2024. The show ends with Kevin's brand new holiday single, "Christmas Home." Happy Holidays from the Shutter Brothers!
Wayne and Kevin are still thinking about the fun that was had on our 2023 Photowalk. We've seen some great photographs from participants, and there's more to come. Thanks to everyone who participated, and we look forward to doing it again next year! After a discussion of recent activities, the Shutter Bros. reach deep into the vitural mailbag for some great listener email. Topics include how to make fixed image test strips, choosing the right negative sleeves, network enabled enlarger timers, idiosyncratic photography, and whether or not we should keep shooting past 36 exposures. Where do you stand on that one? Happy Photography!
The Shutter Brothers are back, and the 2023 Photowalk is fast approaching! Wayne already knows what camera he is bringing, but Kevin can't decide. Leica iiia or Rolleicord Va? Your help is needed! The aforementioned 2nd Annual Photowalk with the Shutter Brothers will happen on 10/07/23 in Chattanooga, TN. Listen to the show to get all the details, then make your plans to attend. Wayne and Kevin wrap up the show with some great listener feedback, so we all are guaranteed to learn something. It's what we like to do best! Thanks for listening!
After a summer break, the Shutter Brothers are back with a show that addresses an unpleasant subject . . . MISTAKES! Yes, we all make them, so let's all learn from them! Our faithful listeners join Wayne and Kevin by sharing stories of mistakes so that we can avoid them. Also, both Wayne and Kevin have been making darkroom prints of their vacation photography and solving problems along the way. And Wayne and Kevin have print projects in the works! Finally, it's that time of year again - time to talk about a photowalk! The Shutter Bros proudly announce the 2nd Annual Uncle Jonesy's Cameras and Safelight District Community Darkroom Photowalk, which will be on Saturday morning, October 7. Listen to the show to get all the details. Our listeners played a big part in show #62, so please consider contributing to our next show! Send us an email at unclejonesyscameras@gmail.com. Also, check out our show notes at https://unclejonesyscameras.blogspot.com and our Facebook and Instagram pages. Happy Photography!
Kevin is here, Wayne is back from Norway, and the Shutter Brothers are together again and ready to take a deep dive into everything about depth of field - what is it, how can it be controlled, and why it matters. Learning how to make depth of field work for you can take your photography to a higher level, and that's a good thing! Wayne also shares his recent experiences in Norway and the approach to photography he took while there. He had many memerable experiences along the way, including a visit to a truly awesome analog photogrpahy shop in Bergen (where Wayne was able to replenish his film supply). He used all three of the cameras he brought wih him, and he shot mmost of his film. We can't wait to see the results! Finally, the Shutter Bros read some interesting listener email from a couple of Mikes, one of which may have an impact on Kevin's Condo Bathroom Darkroom Project. We always are grateful for our listeners who take the time to send us some feedback, so please keep those emails and comments coming! You can send us an email with comments, questions, tips, reviews, and stories to unclejonesyscameras@gmail.com You also can find us on Facebook and Instagram, and feel free to leave your feedback there. Until next time . . . Happy Photography!
The Shutter Brothers are back - and Wayne has his Normay camera bag with him! Today we get to find out what gear he plans to take with him to Norway in May. We also hear about Wayne's travel plans and what he expects to photograph there. Before we get to look inside Wayne's camera, however, it's time to empty the mailbag and read some listener mail. Listener Roger gives a tour of his "mini camera museum,' which you can see by going to our show notes. We also read two emails that refer to Pentax cameras, and as a coincidence, Kevin relates his recent fist time experiences with the Pentax Spotmatic SP and the Pentax ME Super. Meanwhile, Kevin talks about his second attempt at creating a darkroom space in his small condo, and Wayne shares more of his "Thoughts from the Field." Happy Photography!
Wayne and Kevin are back for a new show - and a giveaway! Three lucky winners will receive an Argus C3 camera or a Shutterhut tent straight from Wayne and Kevin's closets. Woohoo! Also, the Shutter Brothers read some excellent listener email and answer questions about panoramic photography and flash guide numbers. In the show's second half, Wayne delivers Thoughts from the Field Pt 1, and collection of photographic wisdom that he has been contemplating lately. As always, we love to hear from your listeners, so send us an email at unclejonesyscameras@gmail.com. Also, check out our show notes at https://unclejonesyscameras.blogspot.com and our Facebook and Instagram pages. Happy Shooting!
Wayne and Kevin are back, and Wayne finally has the camera he's wanted for over 30 years: the Noblex 6/150F, a motorized panoramic medium format camera that takes sweeping panoramic photographs on 120 fiilm. Meanwhile Kevin is looking forward to his newest camera addition, the Intrepid 4x5 Mk. 5 large format camera. Also discussed in the show are a review of the (according to Kevin) perfect 35mm point and shoot, the Minolta AF2 and the importance of using distilled water when mixing developing chemistry. Finally, Wayne and Kevin are extending the giveaway deadline and adding more prizes! Check our out show notes at https://unclejonesyscameras.blogspot.com. Happy Shooting!
Life happens, and when it does, podcasts go on hold. But the Shutter Brothers are back with an informal chat about life, travels, and, of course, cameras. And we love cameras! But sometimes we may have to consider getting rid of some of our cameras. Kevin and Wayne discuss the whys and hows of reducing the camera "inventory" and why it might even make us better photographers. And speaking of getting rid of stuff, we're in a generous mood. There's stuff in our closets that need to go, and you could be the beneficiary. Listen to find out how. As always, our show notes can be found at https://unclejonesyscameras.blogspot.com. You can email us at unclejonesyscameras@gmail.com Happy Shooting!
A very special evening for lovers of family and film. Seasons Greeting from the UJC!
The Shutter Brothers are back! We've missed you, and we have some catching up to do. First, we look back on our successful photowalk and thank everyone who participated. Second, Kevin reveals his Canada camera choices (prepare to be surprised). Third, the Shutter Bros. talk flash photography - how to do it right (and how to do it wrong). Wayne, of course, does it right by finding the perfect flash for his Makina 67 medium format camera, an Olympus T32. Kevin, on the other hand, does it wrong by ignoring the presence of the M/A switch on his Yashicamat TLR, resulting in some blank film failures. Lastly, Wayne is thinking of opening an Etsy store for his prints, so he seeks answers from Kevin regarding his Etsy store. You can find our show notes at www.unclejonesyscameras.blogspot.com. Thank you for listening!
In case you haven't heard, we're having a photowalk! Wayne and Kevin are super excited, and it's just a few days away. Listen for all the details. Next, Kevin and his wife, Debbie, are taking a week-long trip to Montreal and Quebec City in December, so what camera(s) should Kevin bring? Wayne and our knowledgeable listeners are here to help him decide. Lastly, the UJC Podcast now has over 400 Instagram followers, and to celebrate, Wayne and Kevin give away prints to two lucky winners. Thanks for listening!
Wayne & Kevin are back with a big announcement: Photowalk 2022 is on! It's our 3rd attempt, but we have a good feeling about this one. Find out all about it in the show. Next, the Shutter Bros. answer a listener question about how to make better negatives for printing. In segment #3, Kevin reviews the Minolta Maxxum 5. Could this be this best AF SLR body ever made? Finally, the Bros. announce a IG contest, and two lucky winners are going to get prints by Wayne and Kevin. Happy Shooting!
After a nice morning photowalk in the North Chickamauga Creek Gorge, Wayne and Kevin are back, and of course, Wayne has a camera to discuss, the very small and cool Kodak Signet 35, perhaps the best camera ever to come from Kodak. Next, it's a tale of two developers, as Wayne discusses the Thornton Two-Bath, while Kevin shares his experience with environmentally friendly D-76H. Finally, the Shutter Bros share listener feedback and announce a third attempt at the UJC/Safelight District Photowalk. Stay tuned . . .
Wayne and Kevin get together for an in-person show to have some fun and answer some great listener questions about composition techiques, homemade developers, and two-bath developers like DD-23. Next, Kevin seeks Wayne's advice about more selected photography and how to avoid amassing a collections of "fuzzy concepts." Finally, Kevin talks about his interest in RA-4 color negative printing. Enjoy!
After taking a midsummer break, the Shutter Brothers are back with a winning hand. Wayne announces the winner of his 35mm system shootout, while Kevin proposses a battle royale between his Rolleicord and Yashica-Mat TLRs. Next, Wayne talks about his "butcher cover" lens that appears to be an Otar 58mm f2. But when he "peeled off the cover," he found something quite different. Lastly, we announce the winner of our book giveaway! Yay!
What do you do when you're not sure about a film's actual ISO or about a film's actual development time with a particular developer? Testing is the answer! Wayne and Kevin discuss how to test for exposure index and dev times. Next, Wayne is thinking about shooting more 35mm in the future, so should he use his tried and true Pentax KX, or should he settle on his newly acquited Canon FTb? Finally, we read some listener email and talk about our big book giveaway. Happy Shooting!
Spring break is over, and Wayne and Kevin are back with a question: What kind of handheld camera would satisfy a large format photographer? Wayne seems to have found his, a Plaubel Makina 67. Wayne gives us the lowdown on this fine camera and also shares how he adjusts his large format workflow when using smaller negatives. Next, Kevin shares the problems he has faced when using a diffusion enlarger with cold head light source and how he solved them. Lastly, we're giving away a brand new book designed for the beginning film photographer. Listen to find out how to win!
Wayne and Kevin are back and ready to mix it up! No, we're not talking about fistacuffs, we're talking about home-mixed chemistry. Wayne has been mixing his developer and fixer for years, and in this show he shares how to do it and why it works for him. Also, we've got some great listener questions and comments. Enjoy, and Happy Shooting!
Shutter Brothers Wayne and Kevin are back and ready to answer questions from our failthful listeners. We're all here to learn something new and have fun doing it!
We made it to show #45! And to celabrate, we are dedicating the entire show to large format photography! Our resident 4x5 expert, Wayne Setser, takes us on a LF journey that includes discussion on cameras, accessories, lenses, film, development, and printing. Wayne and Kevin are back with more film chat! Wayne discusses his experience with his Automatic Rolleiflex 4x4 twin lens reflex camera, better known at the "Baby Rollei." This camera looks like a smaller version of the classic Rolleiflex and shoots 127 film. Wayne also developed the film he shot and made a print - and it was a challenging experience! Our next segment is a deep dive into focus and how to take charge of it and make it work the way you want with everything that will appear in your photograph. Finally, we answer a listener question about flash sync. Happy Shooting!
A new year, and new podcast, and a new host! We welcome Wayne Setser to the team, and he gives expert advice on testing a camera before purchasing. Also, we answer listener questions and give away a camera. What a great start to 2022! Happy Shooting!
Gather round the children as we share the old old story of one film photographer's very special Christmas. Happy Shooting!
I'm back with our sixth show in six weeks, and I begin it with five darkroom tips that I learned the hard way. You probably already know these, but if you don't, they will save you time and resources. It's the season for giving, and UJC is giving away a camera! Find out how to enter by listening to the show! Finally, I have a BIG announcement regarding the podcast. Yes, it's THAT big! Happy Shooting!

Kevin shares what he learned recently. We're having a photowalk! At least we hope we are, weather permitting. Get all the details here. Lastly, we are giving away a camera, and it's a real "conversation piece" (haha). Find out how to win in the show. Happy Shooting!
The UJC Podcast is back, and it's that wonderful time of year when us photographers will be capturing lots of memories on film. In fact, instant film is a great choice for the holidays, and Kevin shares some tips on how to get good results when using a vintage Polaroid camera with the new Polaroid film. Have you ever just happen to have your camera with you when something amazing happened? It happened to Kevin last month. Listen to find out what. Kevin also shares an update on his Leica iiia, which he just got back after servicing. And don't forget about our 2021 Photowalk with Wayne Setser. It's just around the corner! Happy Shooting!
One show a week for the rest of the year? Is it really possible? We don't know, but here we are with this "bumpy" show, as I discuss my ill-fated attempt to make contact prints in my small condo bathroom. Bottom line: the large format journey continues, but the printing at home idea goes "down the toilet." Our 2021 Photowalk with Wayne Setser is less than three weeks away, so make your plans to participate. All the details are here in the show. Finally, I take some time to share the photography related things for which I'm thankful. Oh, and you listeners are on the list! Happy Shooting!
We're back with our second show in as many weeks, and this one is special! Wayne Setser joins Shutter Brother Kevin to discuss our 2021 Photowalk (sponsored by Uncle Jonesy's Cameras and Safelight Community Darkroom). You won't want to miss this, so listen here for all the info. It's mail time here at UJC, and Kevin reads a couple of listeners letters. We'd love to get yours at unclejonesyscameras@gmail.com. Happy Shooting!
The Uncle Jonesy's Cameras Podcast together with Safelight District Community Darkroom are pleased to present our 2021 Photowalk, led by outstanding large format photographer, Wayne Setser. Listen to the show for all the details. And speaking of large format, Kevin has been exploring large format photography lately, and he reports on what he has learned so far. Happy Shooting!
We're back with a show dedicated to the heath and wellbeing of your vintage cameras. Kevin's newly acquired Leica iiia has a shutter problem that can be put aright by a qualified camera technician. Camera servicing (Clean-Lubricate-Adjust, or CLA) will help your camera to function properly for years to come and is well worth the expense. Although a camera should be serviced by an experienced technician, there may be a few things you can do yourself. In 2nd segment, Kevin talks about some repairs he has made successfully and one that was a fail. Lastly Kevin reads some much-appreciated listener email. Be sure to check out our show notes at Happy Shooting!
Shutter Brother Kevin is back with a solo show with a report on his first experience with Lomography's Lomochrome Purple XR film. This false color negative film is very popular with many artistic-minded film photographers, but what does Color-Blind Kevin think? Listen to find out. Next, flea market dreams do come true, as Kevin found out on a recent Saturday when he found a long lost Leica treasure. Finally, do you want to become a better photographer? Listen to find out how. Check out our blog (https://unclejonesyscameras.blogspot.com) and our Instagram and Facebook pages (@UJCPodcast). Happy Shooting!
Our featured guest on today's show is Mario Piper! Mario is a talented photographer who has a knack for getting the most out of expired films while also producing artful and expressive images. In addition, Mario produces the Gen-X Photography Podcast (which Shutter Brother Kevin has been really enjoying). In it, Mario chronicles his film photography journey and how it has changed his life. You can find Mario's photography on Instagram here and Flickr here, and you can listen to Gen-X Photography here. Happy Shooting!
Jerome Carter is the creator of the Earth Sun Film blog, which Shutter Brother Kevin has really been enjoying lately. Jerome began a film photography journey as a way to make better photographs of his garden, and he uses his blog to share what he learned along the way and the stories his garden and his photographs have shared with him. You will not be sorry that you checked out his blog. https://earthsunfilm.com Happy Shooting!
