In this deeply human episode, Dr. Mark Bonta sits down with cardiac surgeon, scientist, and writer Dr. Paul Fedak for an honest look at the hidden cost of excellence in medicine. Dr. Fedak shares the story of the injury that forced him out of the operating room and into a profound reckoning with identity, purpose, and the culture of silence that surrounds clinician suffering.Drawing from years as Professor at the University of Calgary and Director of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute, he unpacks why perfectionism is so common in medical training, how surgeons learn to mask pain behind composure, and why emotional detachment has long been mistaken for professionalism. Together they explore the unseen burden clinicians carry, the pressure to perform without pause, and the moments when the mask finally cracks.Dr. Fedak speaks candidly about ego death, vulnerability, and rebuilding a life after losing the work that once defined him. He describes the colleagues who opened up only after he shared his own story, highlighting how connection and honesty can transform a profession built on quiet endurance. This episode examines the human side of medicine that rarely makes it into textbooks. Identity. Injury. Recovery. Presence. What it means to care for others while trying to stay whole yourself.A moving conversation for anyone in healthcare or anyone who has ever struggled with the weight of impossible expectations.Paul Fedak, MD, PhD's website : paulfedak.comEpisode Takeaways1. Surgeons are trained to push through pain, not acknowledge it.Medical culture rewards resilience and persistence, but that same conditioning prevents clinicians from recognizing and responding to their own injuries.2. Perfectionism is wired into medical training.Traits like list making, obsessive task completion, and performance under observation are common in medicine and often go unexamined despite their psychological cost.3. The mask of competence becomes automatic.Clinicians become so skilled at hiding distress that even close colleagues fail to notice warning signs. This silence leaves suffering invisible.4. Vulnerability creates connection and protects lives. When Dr. Fedak shared his story, dozens of peers came forward with their own hidden experiences. Openness is not weakness. It is safety.5. Ergonomic injuries in surgery are far more common than most people realize. The physical demands of operating are intense, yet surgeons lack the protections that other healthcare workers receive.6. Leadership shows the true burden physicians carry.Once in leadership roles, clinicians see the depth of burnout, fear, and quiet endurance happening behind the scenes.7. Losing the identity of “surgeon” creates an existential crisis.Stepping out of the operating room forced a complete reevaluation of purpose, ego, and self worth.8. Technical excellence is not the full measure of a doctor.Relational skill, empathy, presence, and human connection matter just as much as procedural skill.9. Medicine needs protected space for reflection.Without pause and presence, clinicians lose touch with themselves and the people they care for. Healing requires time, community, and grounding.10. System structures shape clinician wellbeing. The fee for service model rewards quantity over recovery, creating pressures that make self care feel impossible.11. Paying clinicians to care for themselves could change outcomes. If mental health visits, ergonomic care, and recovery time were compensated, more clinicians would seek help early.Episode Timestamps07:10 How one surgeon's work related injury forced a career pivot and a deeper conversation about wellbeing.08:25 The secret stories colleagues shared only after Paul opened up about his own suffering.10:30 Independent contractor status and why doctors lack the ergonomic protections nurses receive.13:00 The unseen emotional toll behind surgical careers and what leadership reveals about clinician suffering.16:00 Training teaches perseverance, but injury demands honesty. Shoot us a Text.Episode #1119: Ford's factory revamp signals a new EV era, GM doubles down on autonomy without the taxi business, and AI takes over lesson plans as teachers lean into technology's potential.Show Notes with links:Ford will invest $2B to transform its Louisville, KY plant into a high-efficiency hub for an affordable, tech-packed electric pickup—aiming to rival low-cost Chinese EVs when it launches in 2027.The new process cuts parts count by 20% with large single-piece aluminum castings.Parallel assembly lines replace traditional conveyors, boosting efficiency by 15%.Lighter, shorter wiring harnesses save weight and simplify assembly.Ergonomic workstations improve build quality while reducing labor strain.“This is a bold and difficult undertaking to compete with the best in the world,” said Doug Field, Ford's Chief EV & Digital Systems Officer. From Cliff Banks on LinkedIn “One tiny fact -- that is big news, in our opinion -- that came out of Ford's second earnings call: Ford reduced the per-vehicle loss on its EVs from $44k to $22k last quarter. Keep that up, and its Model E division will be profitable much faster than expected.”After shutting down its Cruise robotaxi unit, GM is reigniting its autonomous ambitions—this time targeting personal-use driverless cars instead of fleet services. The new program starts with hands-free, eyes-free driving while a human is in the vehicle, progressing toward fully driverless capability.Sterling Anderson, former Tesla Autopilot chief is building a team by hiring new talent and inviting former Cruise employees back.GM is deploying lidar-equipped, human-driven test vehicles to log data and train simulation models that guide development. On GM's Q2 earnings call, CEO Mary Barra named autonomous tech, expanding the domestic supply chain, and battery innovation as “our clear priorities.”Three years after ChatGPT's public debut, many K-12 educators are moving from banning generative AI to using it as a tool for critical thinking, creativity, and tailored instruction.About 60% of teachers now use AI for lesson planning, grading, and parent communication, saving an average of 5.9 hours weekly.Early bans led students to hide AI use; now some districts are forming committees to guide ethical adoption.Teachers also use AI for individualized lessons, translation, accessibility, and real-world project design.Concerns remain about bias, privacy, and over-reliance, but advocates say benefits outweigh risks when guardrails are in place.“Educators are starting to realize that AI isn't going away—and that it's better to teach their students how to use it, rather than leave them to their own devices,” said a Drexel University professor.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

And doing this over and over again, throughout the course of the day, can be traumatic to our bodies. So it's imperative that we are aware of our body position and the patient's position in the chair so that we minimize wear and tear on our musculoskeletal system. That means developing and maintaining good ergonomic habits. To tell us about this is our guest, Katrina Klein. Katrina is a registered dental hygienist for 16 years, national speaker, author, competitive bodybuilder and certified personal trainer. She's the founder of ErgoFitLife, where ergonomics and fitness are a lifestyle to prevent, reduce or eliminate pain. The work-from-home culture has become popular recently, especially during the holiday season. While it is an excellent way to maintain productivity and achieve work-life balance, it is important to prioritize a healthy posture. Poor posture can result in persistent neck, shoulder, and back pain, tension headaches, and other painful conditions. Maintaining good posture while working from home is essential, especially during the holiday season. • Importance of Posture Maintaining a good posture is essential to your overall health and has significant benefits, including reduced back, neck, and shoulder pain, increased energy, and greater confidence. It also helps avoid muscle tension, fatigue, and other painful conditions. A good posture can reduce wear and tear on your joints, especially your spine. • Ergonomic set up Are you planning to work from home and enjoy the work-life balance while remaining productive? Good idea! However, don't think about working from your bed or sofa. Consider setting up a home office by investing in an ergonomic chair and a sizeable desk. A well-set-up home office will help promote good posture, preventing back, shoulder, and neck pain. Experts describe an ideal office chair with armrests and a seat height that allows the feet to rest flat on the floor. An individual's hips and knees should be slightly above a 90-degree angle. You may also consider investing in a chair that supports the curvature of the lower back. The optimal place for a computer monitor is an arm's length away, with the top of the monitor at or below eye level. While working, consider increasing the font size as necessary to reduce eyestrain. • How chiropractic care can prevent pain and discomfort from sitting long hours Practicing good posture and arranging your workspace correctly is essential for your health. However, regular chiropractic appointments are crucial too in helping to realign your spine, resulting in improved productivity at work. Chiropractic is a natural approach to pain relief without the need for medications. It is an effective and safe treatment that offers several benefits to work-from-home people. Chiropractic care helps reduce pain by identifying and fixing the source of your discomfort. Chiropractic can realign your spine to reduce or remove the underlying causes of neck and back pain. Chiropractors use natural remedies and non-invasive treatments tailored to your lifestyle to relieve chronic aches and pains. Treatments include hands-on manipulation, massage, electrical stimulation, or other techniques to adjust the spine and neck. Schedule an Appointment with a Chiropractor! Are you already experiencing back, shoulder, or neck pain from poor posture? Please don't wait until it is too late! Dr. Jason Jones Chiropractor Care is here to provide the natural treatment you need to relieve pain and be productive as you work from home. On the latest episode of the Work From Home Forever podcast, host Don interviews Mike Jones, a health coach, ergonomist, and author of "Stand Up! Upgrade Your Posture and Transform Your Life." Mike has been helping remote workers live and work pain-free for over 15 years. He operates a posture-based practice in Bangkok, Thailand, and works with clients both in-person and online. Mike discusses the importance of an ergonomic home office setup, emphasizing the use of tools like posture cushions to promote active sitting and prevent stiffness. He also recommends keeping a yoga mat nearby to encourage regular stretching and mobility exercises. These practices help maintain good posture and prevent pain associated with long hours of sitting. Mike shares his journey from solely remote work to a hybrid practice, driven by his desire for face-to-face interaction and the ability to help more people worldwide. He highlights the challenges of balancing a global client base and the importance of setting clear boundaries to avoid burnout. He also stresses the importance of recognizing signs of fatigue and taking time to re-energize. His book aims to educate desk workers on how to reverse poor posture and improve their quality of life through simple exercises and stretches. Mike's clients, especially those in tech, often see significant improvements in their posture and overall well-being through his programs.
