From strange cameras to films and developers! Join Alex, James, and Bill as they sit down for a quick roundtable on some of the stranger things they've encountered in their film photography: a Miranda and Rollei 35 to an Exacta, expired films, and oddball developers. It isn't that any of these things are bad; they just happen to be a bit odd when compared to modern cameras, films, and developers that are pretty similar to similar offerings.

Wel it finally happened. Kevin now owns a Leica M2 after an unexpected local ad pops up. Not an impluse buy, mind you, as his search for the right M2 and the right time to buy it has been years in the making. but to say that Kevin is excited is quite the understatement. Meanwhile, Wayne has been playing with a compact German designed camera of his own, the Rollei 35. And compact doesn't really describe just how small this full frame 35mm rangefinder camera is. Ergonomic it is not, but could Wayne like it anyway? After some show and tell, the Shutter Brothers dive into some listener feedback, and once again, we all learn something in the process. We are thankful for our listeners, and we love hearing from them.

We return with the first episode with all four hosts in nearly two months with a great show.  We had plans to discuss Fuji and Ricoh on this episode, but like our reputation as the first and only open source film photography podcast, sometimes things don't go as planned. Recorded within a week of the release of the new half-frame Pentax 17 and a video preview of the upcoming Rollei 35 AF, the gang and I just knew we had to share our thoughts on these two new cameras.  But since none of us have actually seen either camera, we called someone who we knew would have some insight into what it is like to make a new camera in 2024, Marwan El Mozayen from Silvergrain Classics.  As you remember, in Episode 52, Marwan came on the show and talked about his project re-releasing the Widelux panoramic camera, along with the support of none other than Jeff Bridges. Joining Marwan, Anthony, Paul, Theo, and Mike on this episode are returning callers AJ Gentile, Daniel Bemes, Patrick Casey, Patrick Rapps, Skip Williams, William Pinkham, and first time callers Antony Hands, John Frank, and Brad (we never did get Brad's last name!) We extensively cover the Pentax 17 and the announcement of the Rollei 35 AF with some behind the scenes thoughts on the development of both cameras, but after covering those two models, Marwan shares with us what's new with the new Widelux, where in development it is at, and possible futures for the camera. Beyond that, we discuss other swing lens cameras like the Noblex and Viscawide 16, and after that we finally manage to get into Fuji a bit, mainly with their instant film cameras, we cover models like the FP-1, the merits of Instax Wide, and even a brief mention of Fuji's Integral film, called Fuji Ace.  Antony shares with us his love for the Fuji GF670 and GF670W, and Mike promotes a new Argus book that was recently released. This was a very fun episode chock full of great discussion and interesting information.  As always, the topics we discuss on the Camerosity Podcast are influenced by you! Please don't feel like you have to be an expert on a specific type of camera, or have the level of knowledge on par with other people on the show. We LOVE people who are into shooting or collecting cameras, no matter how long you've been doing it, so please don't consider your knowledge level to be a prerequisite for joining! Silvergrain Classics Discount Code: During the show, Marwan El Mozayen mentioned that listeners of this show get a discount when ordering a copy of issue #23 of their magazine.  To receive this discount, use code: CAMERO24510 when ordering. For the next episode, since we barely scratched the surface of Fuji and never got to Ricoh like we had planned, maybe we'll do that...or maybe we'll do something else.  WHO KNOWS?!  All I can tell you is that we are back to our regular 2 week cadence of recording new episodes, so whatever we end up talking about, Episode 73 will be recorded on Monday, July 8th at 7pm Central Daylight Time and 8pm Eastern Daylight Time. For this, the 64th episode of the Camerosity Podcast, the gang finally devotes our full attention to one of the most popular brands of cameras ever made.  A camera brand that was so popular, they named the entire company after it, the Rolleiflex! Originally founded by two ex Voigtländer employees who had an idea on how to build a better soldier's camera, a new company called Franke & Heidecke was created, and from there, a whole legacy of twin lens, and eventual single lens reflexes was born. Joining Anthony, Paul, Theo, and Mike are returning callers Bill Smith, John Roberts, Marc Gordon, Patrick Casey, Rafael Espinosa, Tim Peters, and first time callers Dean Robinson and Steve "Johnny Appleseed" Lederman. In this episode, we will cover the early history of the company, how Paul Franke and Reinhold Heidecke first got started, the early and later Rolleiflex and Rolleicord TLRs.  We also cover their transition into both medium format and 35mm SLRs, the compact Rollei 35, the Cosina made Rollei 35 RF, and a few other Rollei models. We ask the tough questions like what is the difference between a Rolleiflex and Rolleicord, are the triplet lenses really that much worse than the Tessars, are German Rolleis better than Singapore Rolleis, and what are everyone's favorite models.  In addition to Rollei GAS, we briefly discuss a strange Japanese Rollei copy, why people tend to blend in better using cameras with waist level vs eye level viewfinders, the confusing transition from Voigtländer, Zeiss-Ikon to Rollei, and whether or not Vivian Maier was creepy. As always, the topics we discuss on the Camerosity Podcast are influenced by you!  Please don't feel like you have to be an expert on a specific type of camera, or have the level of knowledge on par with other people on the show.  We LOVE people who are new to shooting and are interested in having an episode dedicated to people new to the hobby, so please don't consider your knowledge level to be a prerequisite for joining! In Greek mythology, Mount Olympus was the home of the Twelve Olympian Gods, Zeus, Hera, Apollo, Athena, and others looked upon the mortals of the world and accepted their worship.  In modern times, Mount Olympus is also home to the Camerosity Podcast where Anthony, Paul, Theo, and Mike gaze down upon their followers, accepting tributes and praise. No, just kidding, none of us are that egomaniacal, no, the real Mount Olympus is in modern day Greece on the border between Thessaly and Macedonia near the Aegean Sea.  It was the inspiration for a small Japanese company formed on October 12, 1919 as K.K. Takachiho Seisakusho, or Takachiho Works Co., Ltd. in English.  The company would originally make microscopes, one of which was branded the "Olympus".  A series of cameras would come next with the same name, and in 1949, the entire company would then become known as the Olympus Corporation. In the years since, Olympus has created some of the best lenses and cameras the Japanese photo industry ever produced.  In the time doing this show, we've mentioned a variety of Olympus cameras here and there, but we had never dedicated an entire episode to them, until now. Tune in to Episode 63 where Anthony, Paul, Theo, and Mike are joined by returning callers A.J. Gentile, Howard Sandler, Mark Faulkner, Matt Murray, Patrick Casey, Patrick Rapps, Robert Coates, Tim Peters, and first time callers Josh Barker, Stephen Strangway, and Tony Plescia discuss their favorite Olympus models, some tips and tricks to using them, and a little bit of history. The episode barely gets started before we go down the academia route and debate what the plural form of "Olympus" is, but then we get to other questions such as why half frame was so popular in Japan, when did Olympus become a point and shoot company, and what are some tips and tricks to get an Olympus OM-2 or OM-4 cheaply at a thrift shop. We're back....sorta! For the month of August, the Camerosity Gang has been on vacation, traveling all over the United States Southwest and Northern Dairylands, battling Florida storms and insect borne illnesses, and handling the stress of a new job and shopping for a new home. In a moment of spontaneous availability, the guys and I jumped on a Zoom call, hit record and just started talking.  If you've ever wanted to know what it would be like to be in a room (virtual or real) with Anthony, Paul, Theo, and Mike, this episode is what it's like, just four guys sitting around talking about whatever comes to mind.  In the spirit of Cocaine and Waffles, we put no effort into this, had no agenda, and just started talking. As promised at the end of Episode 53, we will return soon with Season 3, featuring (slightly) more organized and thought out episodes.  We have a ton of great ideas for topics coming up, so please keep a look out for our next show announcement soon.  If you'd like to join us on a future episode, be sure to look out on our Camerosity Podcast Facebook page, and right here on mikeeckman.com.  We will record our next episode on Monday, September 18th at 7pm Central Daylight Time.  Stay tuned! We first interviewed today's guest over 4 years ago, in fact he was our first proper guest to help us and our listeners along the “new to LF path”.  Show 2 with Graham Vasey is worth a listen as we touch on many interesting subjects, one area Simon and I wanted to return to was Graham's use of liquid emulsion on watercolour paper and that's pretty much what we covered in show 65. So thank you Graham for indulging us once again and we look forward to following up another topic in 4 years time.     Things we chatted about on the show:   We mentioned a few books that Graham has found useful. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Silver-Gelatin-Liquid-Photographic-Emulsions/dp/1902538153   This is probably the only printed definitive guide to using liquid emulsions and copies are getting more expensive, if you can get a copy then it's an excellent resource for all things “liquid emulsion”   After relistening to show 2 Simon went out and bought a copy of Fred Picker's book on the fine print, turns out its not the same one Andrew has, and Erik has neither (maybe he should make one). Anyway here are some links to both (shop around is my advice as some silly money is being asked for )   https://www.amazon.co.uk/Zone-VI-Workshop-Photography-Hardcover/dp/B00JYHSZE8/ref=sr_1_1?crid=389LBHG4EFQZP&keywords=fred+picker&qid=1690189053&s=books&sprefix=fred+picker%2Cstripbooks%2C75&sr=1-1   https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fine-Print-Fred-Picker-1975-08-02/dp/B01K3NHYJS/ref=sr_1_2?crid=389LBHG4EFQZP&keywords=fred+picker&qid=1690189173&s=books&sprefix=fred+picker%2Cstripbooks%2C75&sr=1-2   Graham mentioned several commercially available liquid emulsions from Rollei, Forte, Fotospeed and Foma – the latter is his favourite.   https://www.foma.cz/en/catalogue-photographic-emulsion-detail-1082   https://parallaxphotographic.coop/shop/foma-photo-emulsion-250g/   Graham found that 300g NOT watercolour paper from Bockingford works well. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bockingford-300gsm-Watercolour-Spiral-180mm/dp/B008OVA49Y/ref=asc_df_B008OVA49Y?tag=bingshoppinga-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=80058247183242&hvnetw=o&hvqmt=e&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=&hvtargid=pla-4583657823004312&psc=1   Graham's links   Best to head over to IG as his website is a bit broken. https://www.instagram.com/graham_vasey_photography/   https://www.instagram.com/the_black_tor/     Graham's work is represented in a local arty gallery – take a look https://www.gallerina.co.uk/graham-vasey     Graham's film work can be hunted down on YouTube and Vimeo but here is an interesting insight into what we have been talking about in show 65 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Io9WjR826k       LFPP links - https://largeformatphotographypodcast.podbean.com/ ko-fi.com/largeformatphotographypodcast   You can join in the fun at our Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/2296599290564807/   And now our Flikr group curated by Colin Devroe https://www.flickr.com/groups/lfpp/   Get Twitter updates for the show from Andrew – https://twitter.com/warboyssnapper   Or from Simon – https://twitter.com/simonfor   Email feedback, ideas and questions for the podcast largeformatphotographypodcast@gmail.com   Podcast Hosts Social Media presence   Simon Forster www.classiclensespodcast.com www.simonforsterphotographic.co.uk https://stores.ebay.co.uk/itsfozzyphotography https://www.flickr.com/photos/125323761@N07/ https://www.facebook.com/SimonForsterPhotographic/ https://www.instagram.com/simonforsterphotographic/ https://twitter.com/SimonFor   Andrew Bartram https://anchor.fm/thelenslesspodcast https://andrewbartram.wordpress.com https://www.instagram.com/warboyssnapper https://www.instagram.com/warboyssnapper_pinholes https://www.flickr.com/photos/warboyssnapper/ https://twitter.com/warboyssnapper   Erik Mathy A not updated website. https://www.erikmathy.com/about   IG probably best for all things including rabbits. https://www.instagram.com/erikhmathy/?hl=en   The East Bay Photo Collective https://www.ebpco.org/

Freshly rescued from our tropical getaway where we started fires with Nikkor lenses, beat away native beasts with Arguses, and swam underwater with our Nikonos, the guys and I have come to the realization that we've spent a lot of time in recent episodes talking about some of the same camera brands.  We thought we would devote our next episode to some of the most underappreciated camera brands. Of course, this being the Camerosity Podcast, we don't always have control over what we talk about, so while some very underappreciated camera brands do get discussed, we go down several rabbit holes that are just as interesting.  If you want to hear about burglaries and what happens to camera collectors after they die, this is the episode for you! There are no bad batches here, the gang sits down for a lively discussion about rebranding. Let's face it, the idea of rebranding items especially in photography is nothing new. Kodak, Fuji, and Agfa have all sold their films to resellers even putting them in custom cartridges and boxes. Even some camera manufacturers are known to build more cameras for other companies and sell under those names than under their own name. And today the trend continues, with Agfa still making films but as a contract manufacturer with names like Rollei under Maco Direct selling their product, or Fomapan producing films stocks for Kosmo Foto, New Classics, and Lomography. Plus ORWO provides the sweet motion picture film for Lomography and our friends at Cinestill and their use of Kodak Vision3 and Double-X stocks. And being able to get these in medium format! So the team sits down at the table for a lively and sometimes hard to follow the discussion about rebranding and clone products.

Was genau? Nun, dafür müsst Ihr wohl selber mal reinhören ;)

We mentioned that Mike Novak was in Chicago town last week, and this week we find out what he got up to on his visit with friends and our own Johnny Sisson. Yes, that means lots of talk about “real” pizza, some stuff they call pizza and sell to tourists, dipped sandwiches and why a McDonalds does a roaring trade in ketchup sachets. In between culinary exploits, we learn more about the miniature wonder of the Rollei 35 and why scale/zone focussing does not make a camera useless, as well as comfort zones and Wirgins. ________ LISTEN TO THE PODCAST
