We have something very special for you on the Geektown Radio podcast this week. Due to the technical problems we mentioned last week, we decided not to do a normal show, but we do have two excellent interviews for your listening enjoyment relating to 'Strike Back' and 'American Gods'.The first interview is with Kenton Oxley, CEO of Knockout Productions. Kenton and Knockout help films and tv shows with creative, financial and logistical solutions when they are working abroad. This includes shows such as 'Top Gear', 'The Grand Tour', ITV's 'Next Of Kin' and, our main focus, Sky One's 'Strike Back', which recently returned for its 7th Season. We chat with Kenton about the complex problems organising shootouts in the streets of Kuala Lumpur, along with finding amazing locations, such as the rooftop where Jamie Bamber made his dramatic entrance. We also chat a little about some of the crazy things they had to organise for both those aforementioned car shows...The second interview comes from the recent press screening of 'American Gods' Season 2. We had the chance to watch the spectacular opening episodes of the new season as the battle between the Old Gods and New Gods continues to brew. When the new season opens, we join Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane) just a few short hours after his declaration of war and the epic showdown that ensued at Easter’s party. While Mr. World (Crispin Glover) plans revenge for Wednesday’s attack, Mr. Wednesday continues his quest to pitch the case for war to the Old Gods with Shadow (Ricky Whittle) Laura (Emily Browning) and Mad Sweeney (Pablo Schreiber) in tow. When things don’t go as planned after an encounter at the House on the Rock, both Old and New Gods, as well as those they meet along the way, find themselves on quests across America - all destined in some way for Cairo, Illinois. Shadow will begin to understand this strange world of the gods and carve out a place in it as a believer in order to survive. But change will require sacrifice...Before the screening, our old friend Jamie East conduced an interview/Q&A with stars Ricky Whittle, Ian McShane, and Emily Browning, which you can hear, in full, on this week's show. They discuss what's coming up in Season 2, Ricky's dislike of fizzy water, and Ian talks about becoming an exec producer, and the Season 2 production issues. It is a very interesting listen! Gears and Beers: The Unashamedly Unprofessional Automotive Podcast
We kick off this week talking about Holden, and Holden's ridiculous number of SUV's being increased by yet another called the Acadia. We then talk about the size of new cars today, and that they're only getting bigger. We then talk about 'The Grand Tour' coming out with a video game, that preliminary reviews are saying is rubbish, much like DriveTribe. A Ferrari 250 GTO broke auction records at Pebble Beach for selling for $48million. This then transitions into a discussion about insurance, and then we continue the Ferrari talks with the 488 Pista Spider, which was unveiled at Pebble Beach. We then talk about Chrysler, and how much longer we think they'll be around. This then transitions into talking about 'Merican car brands. Suzuki has overtaken BMW to become the most profitable car manufacturers (based on profit per vehicle). We then answer a listener's question about how much horsepower is enough and finish off by playing 'Show Me What You Got' and motorcycle minute.
As we all huddle around the fireplace to escape the wintery weather this week, what better way to pass the time, than to pop on Geektown Radio and catch up with the latest tv news, film info, and listen to an exclusive interview with composer Michael Wandmacher!Michael is an American composer of music for film, television, and video games. His work is an interesting eclectic mix of genres, from films such as 'Drive Angry', ‘Piranha 3D’, ‘Punisher: War Zone’, and 'Ben 10: Alien Swarm' to tv shows such as 'Imaginary Mary', and ‘Night Stalker’ to games like ‘Bloodborne’, and ‘Twisted Metal’. His latest 2 projects are equally polar opposites, as his main tv show day job is providing the music for 80’s period sitcom ‘The Goldbergs’, whilst his latest movie project is ‘Underworld: Blood Wars’, which he takes over from composers Paul Haslinger and Marco Beltrami. If working in tv, film and gaming wasn’t enough, Michael also performs as remixer under the pseudonym "Khursor", remixing popular songs into more cinematic versions for use on tv and film. Below is an example of a remix he did for Sting's ‘Every Breath You Take’, which was featured on the trailer for the 3rd season of 'The Americans'.Also On This Week's Show:We coax Bex out of winter hibernation to chat about the tv shows and films we've been watching including 'The Grand Tour', the 'Crisis On Earth X' DC crossover, and... 'Jonathan Creek'...We take a look at all the latest tv & film news, including a round up of the headlines from the past week, the Quentin Tarantino 'Stark Trek' movie, trouble on the Queen biopic, and Netflix’s ‘The Umbrella Academy’ casting. We give you our recommendations for upcoming TV in the next 7 days. Libby Purves is joined by food writer Ruth Joseph, musical theatre star Maria Friedman, documentary maker Michael Cockerell and grandson of Agatha Christie, Mathew Prichard. Ruth Joseph is a cook and food writer. Food has always been intrinsic to Jewish life and to her own - from the age of eleven Ruth cared for her late mother who had anorexia as a direct result of her experiences during the Holocaust. Ruth's new cook book, co-written by Simon Round, 'Warm Bagels & Apple Strudel' combines traditional and modern influences - for example explaining why chicken is synonymous with the Friday night Shabbat dinner and unleavened bread with the Passover feast. 'Warm Bagels & Apple Strudel' is published by Kyle Cathie. Maria Friedman is one of Britain's leading musical stars. Three-time Olivier award-winner, she's appeared in many Sondheim musicals including Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park with George, A Little Night Music, Passion and Anyone Can Whistle as well as Chicago and The King and I. She is performing in a one-off concert Maria Friedman - Sondheim & Me, as part of Chickenshed's Talking Points programme, at The Rayne Theatre, in London. Michael Cockerell is an award-winning documentary maker. His latest film features four controversial and colourful characters who regularly made headlines in the Seventies. Sir Jimmy Goldsmith, the billionaire financier; the Metropolitan police commissioner Sir Robert Mark who was on a mission to root out corruption from Scotland Yard; campaigning Labour peer Lord Longford and General Sir Walter Walker who sought to set up his own private army to save the country from a takeover by the Marxists. 'The Lost World of the Seventies' forms part of BBC Two's current Seventies season. Mathew Prichard is Agatha Christie's grandson and chairman of Agatha Christie Limited. He has edited the book 'The Grand Tour' about Agatha's trip around the British Empire in 1922. The book is a collection of Agatha's letters and photographs which she sent mainly to her mother from her year-long round-the-world trip. 'The Grand Tour - Letters and photographs from the British Empire Expedition 1922 is published by HarperCollins. Producer: Paula McGinley.
