This week Rachel is joined by the writer and historian Rachel Cockerell, whose debut book ‘Melting Point: Family, Memory and the Search for a Promised Land' tells the story of the long-forgotten Galveston Movement. Together they discuss how Rachel stumbled upon the significance of her great grandfather, David Jochelmann, in the movement, after she searched his name as part of her research for her family memoir. Rachel also explains why delusion is a key ingredient for anyone wanting to become a writer, and even teases what her next book will be about.

What happens when a writer discovers her "boring" great-grandfather was actually a household name across the Russian Empire who helped 10,000 Jews escape to Texas? Rachel Cockerell's The Melting Point traces this forgotten history through an audacious technique: she removed herself entirely, letting only primary sources--newspaper articles, diaries, letters--speak across time. Her journey uncovers great-grandfather David Jochelmann's partnership with Israel Zangwill, the "Jewish Dickens" and their ambitious Galveston Project to divert Jewish refugees from overcrowded New York to Texas. The conversation with EconTalk's Russ Roberts spans the early Zionist movement's schism over the right location for a Jewish homeland, 1920s New York experimental theater, and one family scattered across London, New York, and Jerusalem.

The Hovercraft SR-N1, piloted by Captain Peter Lamb, sailed from Calais to Dover on 25th July 1959, fifty years to the day after Louis Blériot made the first crossing of the English Channel. It took 2 hours, 3 minutes.  The brainchild of British engineer and inventor Christopher Cockerell, Hovercraft was described as a cross between an aircraft, a boat and a land vehicle, hovering just above the water on a cushion of air. Ultimately over 80 million people and 12 million cars crossed the Channel using Hovercraft.  In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how Cockerell eventually got the UK Government on-side; consider the role of Duty Free regulations in its popularity and demise; and attempt to settle for good whether this iconic craft is *really* a boat, or a plane…  Further Reading: • Cross-Channel Aviation Pioneers: Blanchard and Bleriot, Vikings and Viscounts - By Bruce Hales-Dutton' (Pen and Sword, 2021):  https://www.google.co.uk/books/edition/Cross_Channel_Aviation_Pioneers/S90SEAAAQBAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=Captain+Peter+Lamb,+John+Chaplin+,+Christopher+Cockerell&pg=PA171&printsec=frontcover • ‘Back to the future — amphibious travel gets a fresh lease of life' (FT, 2016): https://www.ft.com/content/c986c712-3dd3-11e6-8716-a4a71e8140b0 • ‘What Happened To Giant Hovercraft?' More than a century ago, 10,000 Russian Jews immigrated to Texas through a coordinated effort led in part by Rachel's great-grandfather and inspired by Zionist thinker Israel Zangwill. Rachel shares the personal journey that led her to uncover this buried history and write Melting Point, which explores themes of migration, memory, and identity. Together, Brad and Rachel examine how this movement reframes common narratives about Jewish immigration, the American frontier, and what it means to seek a homeland. They discuss the spiritual dimensions of migration, the complexity of assimilation, and the ongoing relevance of these themes in the context of current immigration debates. How did Russian Jews wind up migrating to Galveston, Texas in the early 1900s? How did the image of America as melting pot come into existence? How did a family memoir evolve into a forgotten history of Zionism? Find out during my conversation with Rachel Cockerell about her amazing new book, MELTING POINT: Family, Memory, and the Search for a Promised Land (FSG)! We talk about the tightrope walk of composing a history solely out of primary sources and why she eschewed the author's voice for this book, her grudging acceptance of Robert Caro's maxim to Turn Every Page, and how her perspective on Jewishness changed over the course of writing the book. We get into the once-titanic literary figure of Israel Zangwill and how he gave it up to find a homeland for the world's Jews, how Zangwill invented the notion of the melting pot and whether he truly believed in assimilationism, the inspiration of George Saunders' Lincoln in the Bardo on Melting Point, and how Rachel got over the notion that the past was just a lead-up to now. We also discuss her next book on Halley's Comet and whether she'll stick with her primary sources-mode in future books, how her family reacted to seeing their stories (& contradictions) on the page, how a 90-year-old distant relative stole the show, and a lot more. From the publisher: On June 7, 1907, a ship packed with Russian Jews set sail—not to Jerusalem or New York, where many on board had dreamed they would go, but to Texas. The man who encouraged the passengers to go was David Jochelmann, Rachel Cockerell's great-grandfather. The journey marked the beginning of the Galveston Movement, a forgotten moment in history when ten thousand Jews fled to Texas in the lead-up to World War I.The charismatic leader of the movement was Jochelmann's closest friend, Israel Zangwill, an internationally acclaimed novelist. As antisemitic violence rose in Eastern Europe, Zangwill embarked on a desperate search for a temporary homeland—from Australia to Canada, Angola to Antarctica—before reluctantly settling on Galveston. He feared the Jewish people would be absorbed into the great American melting pot, but there was no other hope.In a highly inventive style, Cockerell gives us history exactly as it unfolds, weaving letters, diaries, memoirs, newspaper articles, and interviews into a vivid account. MELTING POINT follows Zangwill and the Jochelmann family through two world wars, to London, New York, and Jerusalem as their lives intertwine with some of the most memorable figures of the twentieth century. As each person chooses whether to cling to their history or melt into their new surroundings, the book ultimately asks what it means to belong, what can be salvaged from the past, and whether a promised land can ever live up to its promises.Rachel Cockerell's website can be found at https://www.rachelcockerell.co.uk/Her social media feed can be found at https://x.com/rachelcockerellInformation on her book can be found at https://us.macmillan.com/books/9780374609269/meltingpoint/Axelbank Reports History and Today" can be found on social media at https://twitter.com/axelbankhistoryhttps://instagram.com/axelbankhistoryhttps://facebook.com/axelbankhistory

In today's episode I have the pleasure of speaking with Rachel Cockerell, a London-based author, whose first foray into writing began as a family memoir, and evolved into a remarkable and innovative work of historical non-fiction called Melting Point. Melting Point is a great 2024 release from Headline, and will be coming out in Spring of 2025 in the States. The book was longlisted for the 2024 Baillie Gifford Prize, and explores the origins of the Zionist movement, and one of its particular, little-known chapters – the Galveston Plan.  Most interestingly, perhaps, is the structure – it's a polyphonic blend of primary sources and texts, which she splices to build a story arc. The book is an absolutely fascinating read that touches on identity, belonging, and the search for a place to call home. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and would strongly recommend it. In this episode of Derms and Conditions, host James Q Del Rosso, DO, is joined by Clay Cockerell, MD, a practicing dermatopathologist at Cockerell Dermatology in Dallas, TX, whose expertise in dermatopathology and commitment to ongoing education offer listeners practical advice on enhancing patient care and professional fulfillment. They begin by discussing some common pitfalls that can lead to missed diagnoses. Dr Cockerell emphasizes the importance of proper biopsy techniques, noting issues such as inadequate superficial biopsies that miss diagnostic areas and improper punch biopsies that fail to assess critical features. He also addresses insufficient preset menu options in EMR systems that lack necessary detail, advocating for including clinical photographs with unusual skin biopsies to improve diagnostic accuracy. They then expand on the topic of the underutilization of EMR systems to send clinical photographs to dermatopathology labs, urging more offices to adopt this practice to provide valuable context for difficult cases. Dr Cockerell then shares his journey of continuous learning, having pursued multiple MBAs and a law degree. He emphasizes the value of business and legal knowledge in medical practice, noting that his MBA education helped him with personal finance, hiring, leadership, and people skills, while his law degree provided valuable insights into understanding legal documents and advocating for his rights. Dr Del Rosso and Dr Cockerell then speculate on the increasing rates of burnout among dermatologists and emphasize the importance of hobbies and interests outside of medicine, with both agreeing that diversifying one's interests is crucial to maintaining passion and satisfaction in one's career. Tune in to the full episode for more valuable insights into improving dermatology practices, the importance of continuous learning, and strategies for maintaining work-life balance to prevent burnout.

One of the recurring themes of this podcast is leadership. Writing and creativity are, of course, a huge part of what we do. But if we want to operate a successful business, we have to be able to manage all the moving pieces in order for things to run smoothly and grow over time. I'm excited to have a guest today who can help us do that. Valerie Cockerell was born and raised in France, where she graduated with a degree in Business Hospitality. She eventually joined Disneyland Paris in 1991 as a retail manager. After succeeding in a number of roles, she eventually oversaw the planning for all Resort merchandise locations in the park. Upon moving to Florida in 1997, Valerie worked as the Assortment Planning Manager at Downtown Disney and Epcot Center, eventually moving to Merchandise Brand Management for both Epcot and the Disney Cruise Line. Valerie left the company and started consulting for outside organizations in the retail world. She returned to Disney in 2013 to become a contract facilitator for Disney Institute, where she facilitated professional development classes and custom programs in both French and English. She drew from her international management experience in retail and operations to teach Disney's approach to Leadership Excellence and Customer Service. Since May 2019, Valerie has been a keynote speaker and workshop facilitator with her husband, Dan Cockerell. In her speaking, she shares her expertise and methodology in leading teams and delivering outstanding customer service. Valerie joins me today for a conversation about her new book, Manage like a Mother: Leadership Lessons Drawn from the Wisdom of Mom, which offers a simple-to-understand and easy-to-implement take on leadership inspired by a mother's playbook. We talk about her career working for the Disney organization, how everyone can learn to become a better leader and manager by borrowing concepts from mothers (even men!), how writers can implement these principles, and more. Valerie Cockerell is a Leadership Coach and celebrated author, best known for her new book, Manage Like A Mother. Valerie found her passion for working with people when she moved to London at 16. Exposed to diverse cultures, she developed a profound love for learning about people and their behaviors. Following this, she moved to Florida, where she worked at Walt Disney World before becoming a part of the opening team for Disneyland Paris. Today, Valerie leverages her distinctive experiences and insights as a leadership consultant, assisting leaders in their growth journey and fostering the development of their teams. In this episode, Valerie talks about being an expat, how to manage like a mother, and bridging the gender gap.    Being an Expat "You have to be an expat once in your life." After relocating to London at 16, Valerie realized the value of being an expat. Valerie emphasizes that on some level, we're the same, but people need to learn to appreciate cultural differences, as it teaches us priceless lessons about learning to work with different people and different personalities.  Valerie shares that when you become an expat, you develop a critical eye and begin to notice things that most people typically can't see. By developing this critical eye, you can begin to see why people have the behaviors they do and why every person has a different approach to work and to leadership.    How to Manage Like a Mother "A mom gives feedback every day. She doesn't wait until the performance evaluation at the end of the year." Valerie knows that being a leader is overwhelming, and she wrote her book Manage Like A Mother to help. After all, looking at leadership through the perspective of a mother answers a lot of tough questions. The skills that are required to be a mother are very similar to the skills required to be a leader. Having that long-term vision for your team and nurturing growth can take the work environment to the next level.  Valerie says that similar to the investment you would have with a child, you should have a similar investment in your team. Taking an individual from a ‘young age' and giving daily feedback and sharing your vision for them can make a distinctive difference in their growth as an employee, while also helping them spread their wings. Additionally, every child is different, and knowing that you can't repeat the same behavior with everyone is key to being a good leader.   Bridging the Gender Gap “The emotional intelligence that women bring to the workforce really makes a difference.” Most leaders in the world are men, and if you ask them who the most influential figure in their life is, most of them would say that it was their mother. Valerie says that it's important to bring this into the workplace as well, because women are also incredibly strong and passionate leaders that can make a difference. Additionally, Valerie shares that workplaces shouldn't view maternity as time away from work, but rather a time where women can gain skills. Caring for a child can teach many important lessons, and these lessons translate very well into the workplace from a leadership perspective.  To connect with Valerie, you can find her on LinkedIn. It took 2 hours, 3 minutes.  The brainchild of British engineer and inventor Christopher Cockerell, Hovercraft was described as a cross between an aircraft, a boat and a land vehicle, hovering just above the water on a cushion of air. "Are Lee and Dan Cockerell really like that everywhere? That's right, they are." Author and speaker known as Dr. Disneyland, Jeff Barnes, returns to the Jody Mayberry Show to ask me three questions. He hit it out of the park with his questions, including my childhood inspiration to become a park ranger. We also get into some of the experiences I've had with former Disney executives, Lee Cockerel and Dan Cockerell. As a kid I can remember going on family vacations and admiring the hats and uniforms of park rangers. The more I learned about them and their dedication to protecting the parks, I became even more interested in becoming a ranger. In a similar sense, the more I got to know Dan and Lee Cockerell, my understanding and appreciation for the Cockerell legacy grew. Their lessons gave me a unique determination to excel in the new direction of my career. One of my favorite memories with Lee Cockerell came during a recent visit to Hollywood Studios. It was the first time we had gone to a park together after working together for nine years. Lee had never been to Galaxy's Edge before, and it was amazing to experience the ride together. Lee and Dan have been great examples of pursuing new opportunities, while cherishing where you've been and what you've done. For me, that includes the fond memories of the parks and park rangers that ignited my dreams in the first place.
