Nerds Talking: Deadpool and Wolverine Hit Theaters, Joker 2 Trailer, Land of Bad Review, and Olympics Debate This week on Nerds Talking, we dive into the highly anticipated release of Deadpool and Wolverine! The movie has finally hit theaters, but will you watch it? Carlos already has, but he's keeping tight-lipped to avoid any spoilers. The excitement doesn't stop there; the trailer for Joker 2 has just dropped, and Marie has some strong opinions about the upcoming film that you won't want to miss. Next, we review the intense American war film *Land of Bad*. Directed by William Eubank and co-written with David Frigerio, this film stars an impressive cast including Liam Hemsworth, Russell Crowe, Luke Hemsworth, Ricky Whittle, and Milo Ventimiglia. The story follows Captain Eddie "Reaper" Grimm, a US Air Force drone pilot, and Staff Sergeant Nia Branson as they provide air support for a US Army Delta Force team on a mission to rescue a CIA spy in the southern Philippines. Amidst a fierce firefight with the Abu Sayyaf, Sergeant JJ "Playboy" Kinney, a young Air Force TACP Airman attached to the Delta Force team, is seemingly the only survivor and must rely on the Reaper's remote air support to reach the extraction point. Lastly, we turn our attention to the Olympics. We debate the inclusion of certain "sports" in the games—are they truly sports, or just games? Join us as we break down what belongs in the Olympics and what doesn't. This week on Hotel Vicarious, the Countdown to Bridgerton has begun! Daria and Jenny are back from break and we are talking about Jerusha Hess's 2013 romp, Austenland! Based on the novel by Shannon Hale. Austenland follows the story of single 30-something Jane Hayes, a self confirmed Jane Austen superfan and Mr. Darcy aficionado, who spends her life savings to spend a week in an immersive Austen experience in the English countryside. Austenland is a ridiculous fun romcom with a swoon worthy cast (Keri Russel! JJ Feilds! Ricky Whittle!), a charming love story and the scene stealer herself, the ever delightful Jennifer Coolidge. Join us as we recap the movie, talking through our favorite parts, the scenes that made us side-eye and everything in between. Jenny and Daria also talk about the new section of the podcast, Book of the Week - and the inaugural piece of work is Elena Armas's The Spanish Love Deception. A book both of us read in less than 24 hours because this delicious slow burn Enemies to Lovers/Fake Dating romcom had such amazing tension, and was so steamy…we couldn't put it down! We also talk about how we have a new VIP Discord group if you want to talk to us! And our Mr Darcy bracket starts shortly, so keep your eyes out for the first round coming soon on our socials! Ricky Whittle made his acting debut in 2002, playing Ryan Naysmith of fictional football club Harchester United in Dream Team. What followed was a four-year stint as Calvin Valentine in the Uk's hit show, Hollyoaks. A successful stint on Strictly Come Dancing duly followed all whilst making an incredible impact in the UK with his career, Ricky harboured bigger ambitions and wanted to give Hollywood a go and in 2009, he boarded a plane to go after his dreams. Success came with his casting in the popular show The 100, with Ricky becoming a popular character, and then came the lead role in one of Hollywoods biggest shows 'American Gods' with Ricky being cast as the lead 'Shadow Moon' During this incredible episode, Founder Glenn Marsden chats with Ricky about his start into entertainment, through an undeniably incredible career in the UK through to taking a leap into the unknown that is Hollywood, to have some amazing success then cast as the lead in one of the US's biggest shows. Not only do we hear all about his amazing work, we also get to know all about the man behind the profession, his upbringing, how he navigated his whole mental wellbeing through his younger years and how things may have been completely different had he not internally chosen himself and changed his mindset on how he looked at life. The final episode in this Season! Our good friend Ricky Whittle aka Shadow Moon weaves this tale. An old man, helpless and lost in one kind of way - befriends some furry babies who are helpless in an entirely different way. The old man is helpless because he knows ONLY what he can see and touch. The old man can no longer see or touch the one thing he ever loved. And now he feels ONLY - all that he has lost. The furry babies are helpless because they know NOTHING of the visible world around them. They understand only what they sense of that world... The furry babies lost their greatest love also. But they can sense love anywhere. They are not blind in the light. And so the babies become father to the man. narrated by Ricky Whittle written by Nick Gillie produced by Avila Santo music scored and soundscape by Ron Blake original music and orchestration by Matthew Pittman post photo designed by Blanchard Marketing A Black University Production

Actors talk about how their characters intersect in the series.
In this episode Mark talks about one of favourite TV series, adapted from one of his favourite books by one of his favourite authors, Neil Gaiman: "American Gods". Mark talks about the premise of both the novel "American Gods" and the first two seasons of the television adaptation - which revolves around a war that is by incited between the "Old Gods" of mythology and the "New Gods" of technology and globalisation. The "American Gods" TV series is executively produced by Neil Gaiman and it can be seen on both the Starz cable channel in the US and on Amazon Prime world-wide. In this episode Mark talks about the characters and the Gods that populate the story - who in some cases are both the protagonists and the antagonists of the overriding story of both "American Gods" the TV series as well as the novel of the same name - and he explains who the characters are, what motivates them, and what influences their actions. The series stars Ricky Whittle as Shadow Moon, Ian McShane as Mr. Wednesday, as well as a cast of other phenomenonal actors who play some memorable, compelling, and out of this world characters - such of gods, goddesses, jinn, a leprechaun, a dead wife, and other modern personifications of legendary mythological beings. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

"Munnin" —episode 3 of American Gods' second season— showed us Mr. Wednesday really is pulling the strings behind many of our favorite characters. It also showed us a different side of Ricky Whittle when Shadow Moon loosened up for juuuust a second. New Media finally arrived on the scene and wasn't quite what we expected. Then things got REALLY unexpected as she ... interfaced with the god of surveillance, Argus. Iktomi and Sam Black Crow added Native American viewpoint to the kaleidoscopic cast, sending The King Bee and Gene Lyons rushing into research mode. And we found some interesting stuff. Listeners wrote in this week to speculate on Bilquis' power and correct us on perceptions of skin color in the black community. We have something very special for you on the Geektown Radio podcast this week. Due to the technical problems we mentioned last week, we decided not to do a normal show, but we do have two excellent interviews for your listening enjoyment relating to 'Strike Back' and 'American Gods'.The first interview is with Kenton Oxley, CEO of Knockout Productions. Kenton and Knockout help films and tv shows with creative, financial and logistical solutions when they are working abroad. This includes shows such as 'Top Gear', 'The Grand Tour', ITV's 'Next Of Kin' and, our main focus, Sky One's 'Strike Back', which recently returned for its 7th Season. We chat with Kenton about the complex problems organising shootouts in the streets of Kuala Lumpur, along with finding amazing locations, such as the rooftop where Jamie Bamber made his dramatic entrance. We also chat a little about some of the crazy things they had to organise for both those aforementioned car shows...The second interview comes from the recent press screening of 'American Gods' Season 2. We had the chance to watch the spectacular opening episodes of the new season as the battle between the Old Gods and New Gods continues to brew. When the new season opens, we join Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane) just a few short hours after his declaration of war and the epic showdown that ensued at Easter’s party. While Mr. World (Crispin Glover) plans revenge for Wednesday’s attack, Mr. Wednesday continues his quest to pitch the case for war to the Old Gods with Shadow (Ricky Whittle) Laura (Emily Browning) and Mad Sweeney (Pablo Schreiber) in tow. When things don’t go as planned after an encounter at the House on the Rock, both Old and New Gods, as well as those they meet along the way, find themselves on quests across America - all destined in some way for Cairo, Illinois. Shadow will begin to understand this strange world of the gods and carve out a place in it as a believer in order to survive. But change will require sacrifice...Before the screening, our old friend Jamie East conduced an interview/Q&A with stars Ricky Whittle, Ian McShane, and Emily Browning, which you can hear, in full, on this week's show. They discuss what's coming up in Season 2, Ricky's dislike of fizzy water, and Ian talks about becoming an exec producer, and the Season 2 production issues. It is a very interesting listen! (Quick apology for some of the audio this week, between missing microphones and babies, it has some issues, bear with us, it will get better...)This week's film — and the next in our Nicolas Winding Refn mini-season — is one close to Rob's heart: VALHALLA RISING (2009). We get the inside scoop on some of the decisions made by the director, as well as considering some of the mythical/religious ideas behind the film — and if this is a film about giving or withholding answers. SPOILERS! Season 3 of Better Call Saul was soooo freaking good, right?! We talk about all of the stuff that made this season pop. Nacho! Chuck! Jimmy! Saul! Kim! Howard! Mike! We also talk about the stellar first season of American Gods. The casting. The chemistry between Mad Sweeney and Dead Wife Laura. That scene between the Jinn and Salim. How much we love Ricky Whittle and Ian McShane. Plus, that speech from Mr. Nancy. Damn.
The ‘Nolanverse' rolls on, as we focus on THE DARK KNIGHT. Sam's view of the film may not be as predicted, before we talk about the origins of the Joker, what it means to really be chaotic, and the young loss of a phenomenal acting talent. This Week's Media JOHN WICK (2014): Chad Stahelski, David Leitch, Keanu Reeves AMERICAN GODS (2017): Neil Gaiman, Ricky Whittle, Emily Browning Recommendations BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN (2005): Ang Lee, Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal SPECTRE (2015): Sam Mendes, Daniel Craig, Christoph Waltz HEAT (1995): Michael Mann, Al Pacino, Robert de Niro THE MAN WHO LAUGHS (1928): Paul Leni, Mary Philbin, Conrad Veidt Footnotes Rob mentions that one of his recommendations this week is a piece of German Expressionism; read more about this movement here, here and here. Speaking of which, here's that eerily Joker-esque picture of Conrad Veidt. Not much else to add this week, apart from a great piece on Heath Ledger. And this is a fun article (not on movie mistakes, despite the page's title).
Another American Gods episode, another brace, and racy scene. Episode 3: Head Full of Snow brought us one of the most graphic gay scenes ever televised, but it was much more than that. We finally saw Ricky Whittle really shine as an actor. We saw, in the Anubis scene, how the gods interact with humans on an entirely different level. And we saw way more CGI than Gene could stomach. If you're upset about American Gods, commiserate with us. If you're loving the show, come celebrate its many wins. If one thing is for sure, there is a lot to talk about. Neil Gaiman’s fertile imagination has been entertaining and enthralling readers for decades. Whether you know him from his groundbreaking comic-book writing for “The Sandman,” his acclaimed novels like “Stardust” and “The Graveyard Book,” or his writing for film and TV (“Beowulf,” “Doctor Who,” and “Coraline,” just to name a few), if you like imaginative fiction, you’re likely a fan. This week on Happy Sad Confused, Gaiman joins Josh to discuss one of his most beloved works, American Gods, and its long-awaited television debut. In this conversation Gaiman discusses the process of bringing “American Gods” to the screen, why he hopes “The Sandman” will also end up on TV, and why he’s sick of grim and gritty superhero films.
