Moving on with Sondheim B-Sides, we come to his very next show after Forum, namely the complete catastrophe that was Anyone Can Whistle. Co-written with Arthur Laurents, who also directed, the show was a massive flop, but it did give the world Broadway star Angela Lansbury, as well as an incredicle score. In this episode, we look at "With So Little To Be Sure Of," but not how it is in the show, necessarily. Curious? Listen and find out! In 1964, Carol was bringing down the house as Dolly, Barbra was blowing the roof off as Fanny, and for 9 performances only, Angela Lansbury belted out Sondheim as Cora Hoover Hooper in ANYONE CAN WHISTLE. It's no surprise to hear that "flop" is not a curse word on "A Musical Theatre Podcast," but that goes double for a show with an incredible score and some of the biggest storytelling swings in musical history. (Some of which are brilliant!) Join special guest Mike Meaney (off-Broadway's Do Re Mi) as we explore this listener request with a larger cultural footprint than many musicals with 10 times as many performances. As promised, there will be plenty of cookies. ;) Head over to PATREON! where subscribers of $1 or more will find even more Sondheim as Mike also guests in our final installment of "Something Worth Singing About." 00h 00’00” Presentación 00h 02’02” Cabecera 00h 02’39” ANYONE CAN WHISTLE (1964) 00h 02’39” There won’t be trumpets 00h 06’21” A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC (1973) 00h 06’21” Send in the clowns (con Alexander Hanson) 00h 11’26” COMPANY (1970) 00h 11’26” Barcelona (con Richard Chamberlain) 00h 14’07” Being alive 00h 16’47” You could drive a person crazy 00h 19’30” DICK TRACY (1990) 00h 20’13” Sooner or later 00h 24’13” EVENING PRIMROSE (1966) 00h 24’13” I remember 00h 27’23” When (con Mandy Patinkin) 00h 31’51” Take me to the world (con Mandy Patinkin) 00h 36’22” FOLLIES (1971) 00h 36’22” Broadway baby 00h 39’37” Losing my mind 00h 44’08” Too many mornings (con Ron Raines) 00h 48’58” GYPSY (1959) 00h 48’58” Everything’s coming up roses 00h 52’30” Rose’s turn 00h 57’28” Some people 01h 00’53” You’ll never get away from me (con John Dossett) 01h 03’07” INTO THE WOODS (1987) 01h 03’07” Into the woods - Children will listen 01h 08’14” Lament 01h 10’17” Last midnight 01h 13’18” No one is alone 01h 17’37” Stay with me 01h 19’33” MERRILY WILL ROLL ALONG (1981) 01h 19’33” Not a day goes by 01h 23’17” PASSION (1994) 01h 23’17” Happiness 01h 27’09” SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE (1984) 01h 27’09” Children and art 01h 31’57” Everybody loves Louis 01h 34’44” Move on 01h 38’28” SWEENEY TODD (1979) 01h 38’28” Johanna 01h 41’13” Not while I’m around

00h 00’00” Anyone can whistle 00h 01’39” Presentación 00h 03’00” Cabecera 00h 04’11” Inicio 00h 04’39” Prelude Act One 00h 06’21” I’m like the bluebird 00h 08’17” Me and my town 00h 13’58” Miracle song 00h 20’50” Now point one 00h 24’04” There won’t be trumpets 00h 27’14” Excuse me (Hapgoods’s entrance) 00h 31’32” Simple 00h 45’33” Finale act one 00h 46’28” Prelude act two 00h 47’42” A One march 00h 49’33” The lady from Lourdes - Come play with me 00h 55’33” You’re my downfall 00h 59’50” Anyone can whistle 01h 04’04” A parade in town 01h 08’10” Everybody says don’t 01h 10’54” Don’t ballet 01h 20’54” I’ve got you to lean on 01h 28’53” See what it gets you 01h 32’10” The cookie chase 01h 43’12” It’s an old game - With so little to be sure of 01h 50’56” Now point one 01h 52’52” Finale ultimo 01h 53’42” Curiosidades y anécdotas 01h 56’26” The lame, the halt and the blind 02h 00’29” There’s always a woman 02h 04’23” With so little to be sure of 02h 07’55” Exit music

For the best part of a decade, Jordan Broatch has already been performing up and down the country in various productions from Ellen Kent operas to playing in Oliver at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Since graduating however, Jordan has established themselves at one of the most exciting newcomers onto the London stage, starring in 2 stellar productions at Southwark Playhouse. Many musical theatre fans saw them redefine the role of J. Bowden Hapgood in Anyone Can Whistle, starring opposite Alex Young and Chrystine Simone. The show was one of the biggest Sondheim revivals since the composer's passing and critics hailed Jordan as a "blazingly engaging" performer. An openly non-binary performer, they have also been a vocal advocate for more diversity and representation of queer characters in the industry. It seemed particularly appropriate that in Lift, he got to play an Avatar - one that is not male or female. Whilst the role was less showy than Hapgood, Jordan remained enthusiastic about the time spent in the show and now proudly calls their company members friends. In this exclusive interview, Jordan Broatch sat down to reflect over the past year so far and expressed his gratitude for getting to make such an impressive debut. It doesn't seem surprising at all to learn that they've been involved in the industry for some time, albeit only recently graduating as an adult performer. Still, they are humble and insists they have more to learn and indeed, we should look forward to whatever Jordan has lined up next. They also describe to us their ambitions for their career, telling us their love for The Other Palace as well as Southwark Playhouse where they made their debut. Jordan also makes it clear they will only work on projects that make them happy and encourages others to do the same, hinting they would also be keen to explore work outside the realms of musical theatre too. It's a fascinating to hear the young graduate speak about his experience and we look forward to watching them continue to flourish in their career.

President Joe Biden says the U.S. would intervene militarily if China were to invade Taiwan. It was one of the most forceful presidential statements in support of Taiwan's self-governing in decades. Biden spoke at a news conference in Tokyo and said the burden to protect Taiwan was “even stronger” after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The U.S. traditionally has avoided making such an explicit security guarantee to Taiwan, with which it no longer has a mutual defense treaty. Biden's comments drew strong criticism from the mainland, which has claimed Taiwan to be a rogue province. A White House official said Biden's comments did not reflect a policy shift for the United States, a point echoed more firmly by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, asked by reporters if Biden's answer indicated the U.S. would do more to help Taiwan than it has done to help Ukraine and whether the U.S. was making a commitment to send troops to help Taiwan in the event of an invasion. A veteran Russian diplomat to the U.N. Office at Geneva says he handed in his resignation before sending out a scathing letter to foreign colleagues inveighing against the “aggressive war unleashed” by President Vladimir Putin in Ukraine. The 41-year-old Boris Bondarev confirmed his resignation in a letter delivered Monday after a diplomatic official passed on his English-language statement to The Associated Press. Bondarev confirmed to the AP in a phone call that he had resigned. He says the Russian invasion was a crime not only against the people of Ukraine, but against the people of Russia. He says the war has wiped out “hopes and prospects for a prosperous and free society” in Russia. Pfizer says three small doses of its COVID-19 vaccine protect kids under 5. The company released preliminary results on Monday and said it plans to give the data to U.S. regulators later this week. It's the latest step toward letting the littlest kids get the shots. Gov. Gavin Newsom met with leaders of the state's largest urban water suppliers Monday and implored them to step up efforts to get people to reduce water use as California's drought continues to worsen. He warned that if conservation efforts don't improve this summer, the state could be forced to impose mandatory water restrictions throughout the state. A law school student in Texas has been posting TikTok videos to help migrants navigate the immigration system. Health officials remain perplexed by mysterious cases of severe liver damage in hundreds of young children around the world. The best available evidence points to a fairly common stomach bug. That virus hasn't previously caused this kind of problem in otherwise healthy kids. Investigators in the U.S. and abroad are exploring a number of theories that might explain the mystery. One possibility that's not yet proven: that the stomach virus and the coronavirus are combining to provoke a liver-damaging immune system response. The folks who hand out Tony Awards believe five is not enough for Angela Lansbury. The Tony Awards Administration Committee announced Monday that the legendary actor will receive a 2022 special Tony for lifetime achievement in the theater, making it her sixth. Lansbury made her Broadway debut in 1957 in “Hotel Paradiso” and won Tonys for “Mame” in 1966, “Dear World” in 1969, “Gypsy” in 1974, “Sweeney Todd” in 1979 and “Blithe Spirit” in 2009. Other Broadway credits include “A Little Night Music,” “Gore Vidal's The Best Man” and “Anyone Can Whistle.” The head of the U.N.'s World Food Program is telling billionaires it's “time to step up” as the global threat of food insecurity rises because of Russia's war in Ukraine. Agency Executive Director David Beasley told The Associated Press at the World Economic Forum gathering on Monday that he's seen encouraging signs from some of the world's richest people, like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. The World Health Organization has identified close to 100 cases of monkeypox globally, including some here in the U.S. So exactly what is it and how does it spread? Despite a mixed reception over the years, Southwark Playhouse is currently reviving Stephen Sondheim's early classic Anyone Can Whistle. The show which has light discussions of faith in miracles, corruption and mental illness has seen the likes of Angela Lansbury, Bernadette Peters and Rosalie Craig take on key roles in the show's history. In this final episode of the season, we are joined by Mayoress Cora Hoover Hooper herself: Alex Young. Here, we are treated listening to Alex's experience returning to Southwark Playhouse after playing in Promises, Promises and workshopping The A-Z of Mrs P.  After also starring in the National Theatre's revival of Follies, Alex Young also takes time to talk about the enduring legacy of Stephen Sondheim and why his work will continue to live through the years.Over recent years, Alex Young has helped recreate some iconic roles in the musical theatre cannon including Nellie Furbish in South Pacific, Amalia in She Loves Me and Sarah Brown in Guys & Dolls. During this time, Alex has firmly established herself as one of the most exciting leading ladies working on Britain's stages today, taking on leading roles in the West End, Chichester and of course Sheffield Crucible where she has starred in 6 different productions. Today as Mayoress Hoover, Alex is still continuing to receive praise from audiences for her energetic performance as deliciously wicked politician with an equally delicious soprano. In this interview, we hear her reflect over the success of her career in recent years and what it's been like working alongside a new generation of talents in this revival Anyone Can Whistle. Synopsis On today's date in 1964, a new musical called “Anyone Can Whistle” opened at Broadway's Majestic Theater. The book was by Arthur Laurents, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The show told the story of a town that's gone bankrupt because its only industry manufactured something that never wears out. To spark tourism, the town's Mayor fakes a miracle – water flowing from a rock – and when patients from a local mental hospital called the “Cookie Jar” escape and mix in with townspeople and tourists, chaos ensues. The only conventional thing about the new Sondheim-Laurent musical was the inclusion of a love story. The New York Daily News called the first act "joyously daffy," and the Journal-American reported that the opening night audience cheered several numbers. The New York Times, unfortunately, panned the new show, opening its review with this statement: "There is no law against saying something in a musical, but it's unconstitutional to omit imagination and wit." Ouch! It didn't help that the new Laurent-Sondheim musical's competition on Broadway that year included crowd pleasers like Hello, Dolly, Funny Girl, and Fiddler on the Roof. The show ran for just one week. But one person who liked the show happened to be a Columbia Record executive named Goddard Lieberson, who assembled the original cast the day after it closed to make an original cast recording that became something of a cult classic. Music Played in Today's Program Steven Sondheim (b. 1930) — Me and My Town, from Anyone can Whistle (Angela Lansbury; orchestra; Paul Gemignani, cond.) RCA Victor 60515

Tune in to next week's first-ever two part episode when we discuss two different versions of Anyone Can Whistle; specifically, the Encores production's performance from April 11th 2011 and the Ravinia Festival production's performance from August 2005! This week's music: “Overture”, “Eve Was Weak”, “Carrie”, and “Out For Blood”, from “Carrie”. “Opening: Joseph Taylor, Jr.” and “The Gentlemen Is A Dope”, from “Allegro”, “Sweet Thursday”, “Overture”, from “Pipe Dream”, “Me And My Town” from “Anyone Can Whistle”, “Overture”, “Like It Was”, from “Merrily We Roll Along”, and “Who Needs Her” from “Breakfast at Tiffany's”.
