Adrian Hanauer first became formally involved in the Seattle Sounders when he became the managing partner of the USL team in 2002. One of the first big hires he made was appointing Brian Schmetzer to be the head coach. While steering the ship on the business side, he also served as the team's general manager, a role he maintained for the first five years of the Sounders' MLS existence. I first met Hanauer in 2010, shortly after I started writing for Sounder at Heart. At the time, I was struck by how eager he was to share his thoughts on both the business and sporting aspects of the team. He stepped down as the GM following the 2014 season and has been the majority owner since 2015. As the Sounders and his role within the team have evolved, I've also had fewer interactions with him. Behind the scenes, though, he remains as active as ever. Hanauer is a near daily fixture at the team's new Longacres training facility, where his office overlooks the pitch. That's where Hanauer and I met about 10 days ago to broadly discuss the state of the franchise. My intention was to get a sense of where he sees the Sounders within the broader MLS landscape; what kind of preparations are in order for the 2025 Club World Cup; how he perceives the Sounders' handling of various off-field issues; and his vision for Longacres that goes beyond the training facility. We usually meet with Sounders majority owner Adrian Hanauer a couple times a year. The last time we talked, the global coronavirus pandemic was just setting in. Now several months later there are still many questions around how this will all affect the Sounders. One effect we do know about is the decision to close the 300s to season-ticket holders. We talked about man of those things in this episode. At least once a year, we try to sit down with Seattle Sounders majority owner Adrian Hanauer to basically get a state of the franchise. This year's interview comes at a particularly interesting time, as the Sounders are embroiled in a rough season both on and off the field. Our interview last Thursday was mostly focused on off-the-field issues, but we opened with the idea that the Sounders' place among the elite's is being questioned. “I'm sort of a slow and steady guy,” Hanauer said. “I like consistency over a yo-yo. If you can make the playoffs and host one or two games, you're going to win some trophies.” “If it gets to the point where I'm an owner who can't put the Sounders in position to win championships, I'm going to find an owner, a set of owners who can do that. This is a passion of mine, this is my community. I want this to be fun and meaningful and important for our community and I get that winning is a piece of that.” This week's music: Perry Como - "Seattle", "RVIVR - "Ocean Song", Woody Guthrie - "Roll On Columbia", "Your Journey Begins" - OurMusicBox (Jay Man) (CC BY 4.0) Thanks to James Woollard, Sounders Public Address Announcer, for doing our sponsor reads. In so many ways, 2016 has been the worst season in Seattle Sounders history. It started with one of the most tumultuous offseasons in their brief history as they lost several fan favorites, including Obafemi Martins. It continued with frustrating loss to Club America in CONCACAF Champions League and into the regular season with three straight losses, a 6-12-2 start and a week spent in last place. Even one of the biggest highlights — signing Nicolas Lodeiro — was preceded by nasty negotiations with Boca Juniors and followed by Clint Dempsey's heart issues. There were off-field issues as well, starting with the whole mobile-ticketing fiasco and several public disagreements between the front office and supporters groups. Given all that, it's not shocking that Adrian Hanauer still has mixed emotions heading into Saturday's MLS Cup, as he admits that he takes each failure personally. We talked to Hanauer in his Pioneer Square office above The Ninety on Thursday for what we feel is some interesting insight into a season that may well end on the highest high in Seattle soccer history.

So basically what happens is that you let Toptal know what type of developer or designer you're looking for, they understand your business and technical requirements and they search for the right person for you. You don't have to do all the screening and interviews that you normally would and they make it really easy for you. We're trying something a bit different this week. You've probably heard us talking about this story for awhile now, but we're finally ready to release Richard Farley's reported story on the Sounders Community Trust and how we got to the point that a refund was issued to Founders Club members. There's a lot to unpack, but the TL;DR version is that 17 months ago the Sounders launched a USL team that would be 20 percent owned by fans. The ownership stake was a gift, but fans bought into the "Founders Club" by plunking down $250 that would go toward a "capital improvement project." Plans changed, though, and with no resolution in sight, the team refunded all that money. Richard actually started reporting on this before the refund was issued, but talks to most of the key parties in this whole thing from Sounders owner Adrian Hanauer to S2 GM Andrew Opatkiewicz to SCT president Paul Cox. It's a fascinating tale and while we don't get all the answers we possibly wanted, we at least hope you come away with a better understanding for the whole situation.

Our first ever YachtCon XV was a smashing success, and for all of you who were unable to join us for the live event, we'd like to offer you the chance to listen back to our 197th, 198th, 199th AND 200th episode!! There's a ton of great stuff, including interviews with Brad Evans, Adrian Hanauer, Steve Zakuani, Roger Levesque, Bill Predmore and Dani Foxhoven. There's also lots of crowd interaction and questions, basically it's just an all around great time. So sit back in your captain's chair, tie on an ascot, and enjoy the full (well, full audio version anyway) YachtCon XV experience!

We're less than three days removed from the Seattle Sounders defeating the LA Galaxy 2-1 but finding themselves eliminated from the 2014 MLS Playoffs on away goals. We discuss the match and offer up some thoughts about the season in general while trying not to weep in our beer ... assuming we're drinking some. Sounders GM Adrian Hanauer joins us as well to discuss the playoffs, the 2014 season and to begin looking ahead a bit towards 2015. He even gives us a couple scoops about who might be staying with the club next season. There's also listener questions to be answered.

Another edition of Nos Audietis is here as we're get to bask in the glow of a second straight win over the Portland Timbers. We break down Sunday's win, and generally just enjoy the tears of our rivals from the south. We're also joined by Sounders GM and minority owners Adrian Hanauer for a discussion on a variety of topics including the state of the team, the potential transfer of DeAndre Yedlin, and more. There's also the MLS Wrap, and plenty of listener questions to answers as well.
