In S4Ep16 Pt1 of the PRP, Adam reconnects with seasoned marathoner, established cofounder of WeRun313, passionate local philanthropist and spiritual guru extraordinaire Joe Robinson who has been preparing for the Berlin Marathon on Sept 29th, 2024. Knox Robinson, legendary long distance runner, global cultural icon, remarkable vibe prescriber and Joe's running mentor joins the show to offer his take on all things bananas, race prep and of course, the running culture that is booming in Detroit! In a refreshing change of pace from traditional PRP episodes, the fellas link up out on Belle Isle 8 weeks out from race day to discuss what peak training is going to look like for Joe over the next couple months. Knox provides some key insight into his unique coaching philosophy and explains why his ad-lib style (that he picked up while training in Ethiopia with some of the best runners in the world) is truly a battle tested strategy for unlocking the best performances from his athletes. Just how far out does Knox let Joe see what the plan is? Not weeks, not days, not hours… we're talking minutes, people. A practice that has forced Joe to be prepared for any workout, any run, any level of output at any given time. When you're training with Knox it's best to not ask questions and you had better show up everyday with an open mind, ready to rumble. Things get vulnerable when Knox illustrates the deeply significant role WeRun313 is serving for its local community. For Detroit to see this version of itself, for black excellence to be at the forefront of cultural, economical and spiritual growth at such a staggering rate is something truly profound. From running, to community support, to philanthropy and beyond; Joe, Lance and everyone who has climbed aboard the WeRun313 rocket ship has made it unequivocally clear - not only do they belong, but they are leading the game, and you best believe, these cats are just getting started!! What's the difference between hope & faith?? Errr does Joe low key abuse voice notes?! Did the ice cream lady just tell Knox he has chicken legs?! We out here recording on wax! Park vibes! African Game?! Mt Kilimanjaro?! Natural wine, psychedelics, free jazz & queer theory oh my! This and so much more in this inspiring, encouraging and amazing episode of the PRP! Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me – from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa's cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I've photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I've tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that's the essential thing. In this episode, I talk to the Nosa Odiase - author of the new book A Cry to War (The Last Warrior King) by Enosadeda Odiase and Karen Pumpuni. We talk about the battles, politics, betrayal, love, 5 pre-colonial African civilisations, and 2 years of research that went into this fictional book dramatised from the stories of real people, places and events from the African continent. We discuss why balancing the last 500 years with at least 5000 years of African history is important to changing the brand that is Africa, and what it means for a person's perception of identity to hear stories of beauty and strength from where they're from. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tlltw/message
Marlon James is a Jamaican novelist and winner of the Man Booker Prize. His recent book Black Leopard, Red Wolf is the first in a epic trilogy that blends myth, fantasy, and history—what James has described as "African Game of Thrones." He spoke with fellow fantasy and comic book fan, Kevin Young, who is a poet and the Director for the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. They talked about James' two years of research for the series, map making, Afrofuturism, and books they love, while unleashing their inner nerd.
27/04/2019: Mohammed N. Al Khan joined us in the studio today for his fiction round-up. Man Booker Winner Marlon James is famous for A Brief History of Seven Killings - how does his latest book Black Leopard, Red Wolf, compare? The author mentioned that it’s an African Game of Thrones but is this actually true? If you’re looking for something different Mo also thinks you might like The Chronicles of Master Li and Number Ten Ox by Barry Hughhart and Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig.
Marlon James is best known for “A Brief History of Seven Killings”, a sweeping, violent novel about the attempted assassination of Bob Marley in 1976, which won the Man Booker Prize in 2015. His new novel “Black Leopard, Red Wolf” is the first in the “Dark Star Trilogy,” a fantasy series which James describes as an African Game of Thrones. On February 19, 2019, Marlon James came to the Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco to talk with fellow author Jeff Chang.

When the cast of the film “The Hobbit” was first announced, Marlon James was dismayed—though hardly surprised—by how white it was. A long-standing complaint of black fans of fantasy is that authors can imagine dwarves and elves and orcs, but not black characters. “I got so tired of this whole question of inclusion, and the backlash against asking to be included,” James tells the staff writer Jia Tolentino, “that I said, ‘I’m going to make my own damn universe.’ ” That was one origin point of James’s “Dark Star” trilogy, which he describes as “an African ‘Game of Thrones.’ ” The first book, which is about to be published, is called “Black Leopard, Red Wolf,” and it centers on the search for a missing boy by a disparate cast of characters. Another origin point for him was the TV show “The Affair”; James borrowed the structural device of a story related by multiple characters whose perspectives don’t quite add up. James talks about writing fantasy from a Caribbean perspective, where “magical realism” may not seem so magical. Plus, a successful C.E.O. says that activist investors’ quest for one quick stock bump after another is wrecking companies and eroding American competitiveness.
Creating his “African Game of Thrones”, the award-winning novelist reveals his notebooks. We join the Jamaican writer, Marlon James, as he works on his much anticipated Dark Star Trilogy. He won the prestigious Man Booker Prize for Fiction in 2015 for his novel A Brief History of Seven Killings, based around the assassination attempt on Bob Marley in the 1970s. He is in his studio in Minneapolis in the US.
