Totally Rad Christmas!
Santa Claus: The Movie, the Score and Soundtrack (w/ Robert Nicholas)

What's up, dudes? Merry Christmas 2!! “Santa Claus: The Movie” is a fantastic origin story, made better by Henry Mancini's score and a killer song of Sheena Easton. Thus, Robert Nicholas from Behind the Bells joins me to really dig into a particular cue from the “Santa Claus: The Movie” score and dish about the Christmas carol medley of it all as well.First, we get into the nostalgic synths with "It's Christmas All Over the World". Played during the end credits, the mid-tempo song set the stage for the emotions of Christmas, washing over the audience like a warm blanket. Written originally with Freddie Mercury in mind, the song eventually was recorded by Sheena Easton. Likewise, the film also features a track by Aled Jones of "The Snowman" fame.Mancini purposely chose to score and arrange the orchestra as traditionally as possible. Subsequently, his score evoked a sense of wistfulness and comfort, harking back to days of yore. According to an interview with Randall D Larson for CinemaScore in 1987, Mancini stated:"One thing we had to satisfy was that you can't have picture about Christmas or Santa Claus and not touch on the traditional. I decided that it would be a good idea to get all of those numbers in one place, rather than spotting them here and there throughout the film. So on Santa's first flight I used them in a piece by itself, and it all worked out well because the montage was well conceived and it made sense. But from there on we went to original music.”Of course, the piece he was speaking of was "Christmas Rhapsody." The cue begins with a triumphant rendition of Deck the Halls before segueing into Joy to the World. A melodic and intimate version of Hark! The Herald Angels Sing follows, succeeded by The 12 Days of Christmas, God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, and O Tannenbaum. Finally, the cue ends with majesty and serenity with The First Noel and Silent Night.Tchaikovsky-esque instrumentation? Check. Catchy Santa Claus theme? Got it. Synthesizer? Yes, but only if a pop star is singing! So grab your celesta, join the orchestra, and play along to this episode all about the “Santa Claus: The Movie” score and soundtrack!Behind the BellsFB: @BehindtheBellsIG: @behind_the_bells_podcastGive us a buzz! After the worldwide success of SANTA SANGRE, Jodorowsky was inundated with offers to make horror films, but he found himself more interested in - for the first time - working with a large budget and big stars. His opportunity came in the form of producer Alexander Salkind, who approached Jodo to direct his wife script for a project called THE RAINBOW THIEF, starring Omar Sharif, Peter O'Toole and Christopher Lee. The result (nearly) ended Alejandro Jodorowsky's directing career, with the film barely being release before being dumped onto VHS in the US four years after its completion. But is the final result truly disaster? On this episode of JODOWOWSKY we're breaking down the complicated history and tangled legacy of THE RAINBOW THIEF and asking what the heck went wrong. We also pay tribute to the late Cristóbal Jodorowsky, and discuss Jonathan Ross's 1990 episode of his program For One Week Only devoted to Jodorowsky. Check it out!

Superman II came out in 1980 as a follow up to the 1978 Superman. Christopher Reeve returns as Clark Kent / Superman along with Margot Kidder as Lois Lane and Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor. Terrence Stamp is also back as the main baddy, General Zod. And all the side characters are back, like Jackie Cooper as Perry white and Ned Beatty as Otis. For this film, Richard Donner had left the production because of issues with producers Ilya and Alexander Salkind, so Richard Lester was brought in to finish the film.Richard Donner had recorded a lot of footage for Superman II while recording the first installment, most of which was lost as Richard Lester came in to finish. In 2006, Warner Bros. worked with Donner to restore his original footage and mix it with the existing film to allow Donner to finish his vision for the movie. This was released as Superman II: The Donner Cut.Join Jake, Tracy, and Val as they welcome special guest Craig Price from Matinee Heroes, as they discuss Superman II! They breakdown bad trailers, the differences between the Donner cut and the theatrical cut, Ursa’s outfit, garbage eating garbage, Superman Mondays and Craig discusses yogurt enemas (thanks Craig). In the late 1970s, the team of Ilya and Alexander Salkind did an amazing thing, created the first Superhero film, Superman: The Movie. The film was a huge success. The franchise continued for another four films, each film being of worse quality than the last. It was a steady decline until the character was given up on in Hollywood for 17 years. Today I tell the story of the fall of the Superman Franchise in the 181 episode of Sunday Morning Coffee with Jeff.
