Flawed Models, Fragile Systems: The Risks in Energy & Food Policy

Climate Risk Podcast

Hear from Prof. Aled Jones, Director of the Global Sustainability Institute at Anglia Ruskin University, as we dive into the role of models in shaping policy, and particularly their weaknesses.  Models are not neutral – they reflect the assumptions, values, and agendas of those that create and use them. Using the energy system as an example, models can (and have been) used to protect the status quo. In part, this is because many of the models are based on the notions of ‘equilibrium' and so they simply can't cope with major structural changes, such as the current energy transition. But it can be difficult for policy makers to switch towards models that are arguably more suited to the job. So, what can we do to supplement the models? One very effective approach is to adopt a structured process of expert elicitation, where we use the insights of experts to uncover vulnerabilities and risks. To bring it to life, we explore how this has worked in the case of the food system. We discuss: The role that models play in shaping energy policy, and how they can lead us astray; How expert judgment and insight can help address model blind spots; and Finally, what are the key lessons for risk professionals? What's up, dudes? Merry Christmas 2!! “Santa Claus: The Movie” is a fantastic origin story, made better by Henry Mancini's score and a killer song of Sheena Easton. Thus, Robert Nicholas from Behind the Bells joins me to really dig into a particular cue from the “Santa Claus: The Movie” score and dish about the Christmas carol medley of it all as well.First, we get into the nostalgic synths with "It's Christmas All Over the World". Played during the end credits, the mid-tempo song set the stage for the emotions of Christmas, washing over the audience like a warm blanket. Written originally with Freddie Mercury in mind, the song eventually was recorded by Sheena Easton. Likewise, the film also features a track by Aled Jones of "The Snowman" fame.Mancini purposely chose to score and arrange the orchestra as traditionally as possible. Subsequently, his score evoked a sense of wistfulness and comfort, harking back to days of yore. According to an interview with Randall D Larson for CinemaScore in 1987, Mancini stated:"One thing we had to satisfy was that you can't have picture about Christmas or Santa Claus and not touch on the traditional. I decided that it would be a good idea to get all of those numbers in one place, rather than spotting them here and there throughout the film. So on Santa's first flight I used them in a piece by itself, and it all worked out well because the montage was well conceived and it made sense. But from there on we went to original music.”Of course, the piece he was speaking of was "Christmas Rhapsody." The cue begins with a triumphant rendition of Deck the Halls before segueing into Joy to the World. A melodic and intimate version of Hark! The Herald Angels Sing follows, succeeded by The 12 Days of Christmas, God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, and O Tannenbaum. Finally, the cue ends with majesty and serenity with The First Noel and Silent Night.Tchaikovsky-esque instrumentation? Check. Catchy Santa Claus theme? Got it. Synthesizer? Yes, but only if a pop star is singing! So grab your celesta, join the orchestra, and play along to this episode all about the “Santa Claus: The Movie” score and soundtrack!Behind the BellsFB: @BehindtheBellsIG: @behind_the_bells_podcastGive us a buzz! Rosebud with Gyles Brandreth

Aled Jones has been famous since he was only 13, when he was a choirboy at Bangor Cathedral in North Wales with a beautiful voice. In this interview he tells Gyles about his first ever public performance, in a village hall on Anglesey; about how he was discovered and asked to record an album, and about his incredible, and rapid, rise to fame. The next 4 years were a whirlwind - trips to London to be on Wogan, best-selling albums and Top of the Pops, a concert in the Hollywood Bowl in LA, singing at Paula Yates and Bob Geldof's wedding - Aled tells Gyles about all this, and about how his down-to-earth parents supported him and kept his feet on the ground. Thank you to Aled for bringing all these stories to life so vividly and for this charming interview. Enjoy this! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

One of the UK's most popular vocalists and broadcasters, Aled Jones MBE, today announces the release of his brand-new album which not only celebrates 40 years in show business but reveals some previously unreleased tracks, recently unearthed by Aled himself. Whilst visiting his family home in Anglesey earlier this year, Aled began reminiscing over the 40 years of memorabilia his parents have collected throughout his career. They literally had everything, even a collection of multi-coloured shirts and bow ties. Aled's mother explained they had been handmade for him by a BBC employee for a series he made in 1983, at the age of 13. This prompted Aled to go and find the original programme. He began to go through the footage and discovered recordings, which have never been released or even heard since the original broadcast 40 years ago. The album includes brand new arrangements of those classics including Ave Maria and Bright Eyes.Aptly titled, ‘One Voice – Full Circle', the new record is the fourth (and probably final, says Aled!) instalment in his utterly unique ‘One Voice' series in which, through the magic of technology, Aled is able to duet with his younger self: man and boy, baritone and treble. Here, album highlights include ‘Sailing', The Sutherland Brothers' 1972 track best known as a hit for Rod Stewart, Handel's ‘Where'er you Walk', from the musical drama Semele, Welsh love song ‘Bugeilo'r Gwenith Gwyn' and traditional ballad ‘Scarborough Fair'. Aled even tracked down the original 80's guitarist, Dylan Fowler, to re-record his part for this new recording. TRACKLIST:1. Bright Eyes 2. Sea Fever 3. Scarborough Fair 4. Where ‘ere You Walk 5. We hear from Mark Humphrey, a dairy farmer near Taunton on the edge of the Somerset levels, whose farm is underwater. All this week, we've been talking to farmers preparing their farms for winter. For sheep farmers though this is a time for planning next year's spring lambs. It's tupping season when they put the rams, or tups, out with the ewes. A Norfolk sheep farmer explains why Lynx body spray is apparently really useful for sheep farmers. Welsh farmers are facing multiple challenges but given the right government support can produce healthy food and tackle climate change; so says Aled Jones the President of NFU Cymru, speaking at the Union's annual conference this week. Unlocking the power of female entrepreneurs from the inside – social impact pioneer Jenny Stojkovic, joins us to share her journey. As Silicon Valley tech industry professional Jenny experienced first-hand that even in the most progressive markets women are being left behind. So she pivoted her career. Bringing together her love of food, her care for other women leaders and her focus on a sustainable future – Jenny started the Vegan Women's Summit to accelerate change in the food industry by bringing together powerful and innovative women. During this podcast, Jenny share's succinctly what she has learnt. Listen into the conversation to hear why funders are missing out by overlooking amazing women entrepreneurs; learn about the food trends of our future; and gain practical insights how to better navigate leadership – from upping networking skills to overcoming imposter syndrome. Jenny explains: “There's no single day where somebody wakes up and gives you a stamp of approval and says, ‘okay, you're an expert, okay, you're a leader.' You just kind of start doing it. It's a habit…you start homing in on your beliefs and your styles and what you want to see builds and eventually at some point, you're just a leader.” In addition, Jenny invites you to become part of the Vegan Women's Summit – joining over 60,000 professionals across six continents, with an annual conference and reports on women founders. Jenny is on a mission to make the food industry more inclusive. And she believes in the power of women. As she explains, “Women drive most of the food purchases - 93% of consumer food purchases are made by women. So, it just would follow suit that if we want to be able to sell to those that buy these foods, we should be tapping into leaders from those communities.” Listen in to find out more and to get involved. Interviews with pioneers in business and social impact - Business Fights Poverty Spotlight

What does it take to be a climate activist? Social Impact Pioneer and climate activist Pushpanath Krishnamurthy talks about what motivates and drives him to give up an easy life and devote it to campaigning for climate justice. Push to his friends has in the past 11 years walked over 35 million steps in the name of climate action. And in the process, he has walked with and listening to over 600,000 people. Push began his walking in 2009 when he set off from Oxford to walk to Copenhagen. In this conversation Push shares some of the stories from people he has met along the way. He paints a vivid picture of what climate change looks like in remote villages in Uganda and how people are innovating climate resilient solutions. Push is a passionate believer in better understanding everyone's perspectives. He says: “It is the darkest paradox of our times that those who caused so little to the climate crisis have paid with life and livelihood, and yet they are able to show us, with just a little power and voice - a clear way forward to adapt and mitigate as well as deliver Justice.” In addition, Push is a master in connecting the dots. Across his travels he has met so many people. You will hear a masterclass of how a connector and master networker connects ideas with entrepreneurs, farming cooperatives with big business supply chains, and policy makers with community builders. Listen to this podcast to hear Push share some of what he has heard during his listening walks. Get inspired to take action and empowered to listen. In his latest article with us here at Business Fights Poverty Push explains: “Leaders, businesses, civics and anyone listening - let us act together. Please take a step, as I have been doing since 2009. As I began my journey, walking from Oxford to Copenhagen for the climate conference and I continue to do so in the 11 years since. I have spoken with more than 600, 000 people in that time and I won't stop now. The 1970s … a boom time for smoooth music but dark times for The Beatles, torn apart and born again in their separate musical identities, each feeling their way to rediscover who they were before The Beatles, who they are now, and who they could become (before their soft new shells harden). All four would flirt with becoming Christmas Beatles, but only John Lennon and Paul McCartney would achieve immortality on Smooth Radio at Christmastime. Who is the “immortal snail” and will John and Paul have to face it before the Earth is destroyed? Deploying their weapons of passive-aggressive song writing from both ends of a troubled decade, John and Paul are locked in a very slow battle for Christmas Beatle supremacy. Paul harnesses the ear-piercing power of his new Commodore VIC20 home computer. John name-drops his family struggles, leaves one child and embarks on a life-long odyssey to find the another, but finds time to send us all on a guilt trip. A further two dark souls would also be born in this decade, their ultimate destiny would be to analyse, interpret, critique, speculate wildly, and sit in judgement of much greater people that came before them. This time with two songs and two artists to consider - can they upset two sets of fans at once? Challenge accepted. Is there really a debate as to which song is better? Is John idealistic, unrealistic or both? When was Paul cool, exactly? Is there a race of cowards? War is over if you want it (or fear it?) (or is it?). Also discussed: The Pogues, Maroon 5, Tom Mcrae, Eminem versus Moby, Madonna versus Aled Jones, Jay Z versus Burt Bacharach, Don't Look Now, In Bruges, and protesting in a bag. We also have brand new (and terrible) Christmas bob-bon puns to moan over. Learn the famous painters of history at the same time. What is Boxing Day anyway? Is it true that John and Paul had a physical fight? We have the exclusive audio of it going down. Simply wonderful regular segments: Misheard Lyrics, Internet Theories, and more. Would you like to appear (well, vocally) on the show? Do you have a pop song or ear-worm from the SMOOTH FM genre that's infested your mind and needs to be investigated? Visit this page https://speakpipe.com/lyrics to record us your own voicemail hot-take on your specific smooth song of suckiness. You could be on a future episode! Simon Barber, co-host of the Sodajerker on Songwriting podcast, joins us for our festive finale to 2022: and it's a doozy! The producing team behind the original Superman: The Movie (1978), its first two sequels and the spin-off Supergirl (1984) turned their attention to another origin story for a much-loved supernatural hero in 1985, and brought us Santa Claus: The Movie. Featuring Dudley Moore as a cheery elf determined to modernise the North Pole, David Huddlestone as the titular jolly gift-giver and scenery-munching John Lithgow as the nefarious business tycoon B.Z., the film has everything you could ever want in seasonal family adventure. Highlights include abducting homeless children to take them on flying reindeer joyrides with dangerous manoeuvres near the Twin Towers in Manhattan, John Lithgow screaming "FOR FREE?!!" and turning beetroot red when Dudley Moore attempts to explain the act of giving a gift, and Aled Jones singing on a glorious soundtrack by Henry Mancini. But is it the gift that keeps on giving, or is it failed super-dooper looper? Find out! Follow Simon Barber on Twitter, if it still exists, and visit the Sodajerker website. Planting trees can cause social harm. The simplest solutions are so often the best ones, but not always. Take climate change – we have put too much carbon into the atmosphere. The planet's main mechanism to take carbon from the atmosphere is trees – so the solution to climate change is tree planting. Right?! Not necessarily, if it means families lose their homes and food is taken out of production. This podcast unpacks the complexities of food security and climate change - their interwoven dependancies and knock on affects to poverty. Hear from Social Impact Pioneer Aled Jones. Aled is an eighth-generation farmer and the President of the National Farmers Union Cymru - the leading agricultural organisation that represents and champions all farmers and growers in Wales. Listen to this podcast as Aled shares his wisdom – he carefully picks apart deeply complicated systemic challenges and their knock-on effects – covering topics ranging across land management, agriculture, food supply, nourishing people and climate change. He explains why tackling food waste should be a priority and how upweighting the importance of agriculture and food systems in our political decision making will ensure better long-term outcomes in food supply, nutrition, climate action and helping to lift people out of poverty. Aled says: “We are now seeing food and energy being weaponised and I fear water can be a critical weapon and all will impact social stability.” Aled is a champion for ordinary people to be at the decision-making table. He implores us all to step up and be heard. Aled explains why experience and wisdom from all walks of life must be brought together if we are to find solutions that will genuinely benefit all. This is no black and white conversation of easy answers – but as Aled says: “There is a much, much, much larger picture…but we all have a responsibility.” Links: Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2021: https://www.fao.org/state-of-food-security-nutrition/2021/en/ World Health Organisation – Healthy Diet, 2020: https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/healthy-diet NFU Cymru, Growing Together 2022: https://www.nfu-cymru.org.uk/news-and-information/growing-together-mss-plant-trees-across-wales/ Oxfam, Tightening the net, 2021: https://www.oxfam.org/en/research/tightening-net-implications-net-zero-climate-targets-land-and-food-equity NFU Cymru: https://www.nfu-cymru.org.uk/about-us/ World Farmers Association: https://www.wfo-oma.org If you liked this podcast, try: Regenerative farming and climate change, with Patrick Nyaga, Farm Africa: https://businessfightspoverty.org/regenerative-farming-and-climate-justice/
