Ilya Salkind is one of the movie's executive producers that started the superhero genre. Superman: The Movie in 1978 taught audiences that you can believe a man can fly. Salkind's father Alexander acquired the rights to make the movie, and its sequels, Superman II and Superman III. He also exec-produced 1984's Supergirl starring Helen Slater. In this episode, Salkind gives an in-depth conversation about making those movies. He discussed casting Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman, and the legendary Marlon Brando. He also revealed that there was a draft of a never-made Superman V. Entitled Superman Reborn, this script was performed recently as a stage reading, the audio of which will be featured in next week's podcast episode. Salkind explains how the idea of doing the reading came to be, and how he uncovered the draft of Superman Reborn. Proceeds from the reading went to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. "From this day on, now and forever, you will bring all our gifts to all the children in all the world and all this to be done on Christmas Eve" Santa Claus the Movie is what you'd call an 80's cult classic. It's a Christmas movie that most people don't like, but I find it a major guilty pleasure. Learn why I defend this movie, along with going into the history of the Salkind family, which involves Greta Garbo, a Japanese monster movie, the Three Musketeers and how the production of Superman would set in many of the ideas that would be reused on Santa Claus the Movie. It's a future-shock story of the magic of computers and how they can make a Superman a grumpy gus. Join SimonUK, Stuart and Ryan as they get super excited over the sharp turn the franchise took into goofiness.

Superboys parents, that is as Jor-El and Lara, bearing a striking resemblance to Marlon Brando and Susannah York from Superman: The Movie, have arrived to take their boy home? And then were going hunting. Is this enough to combat, “The Power of Evil”? And then were going to play homage to one of the most popular science fiction films of the 1980s. Thats right, “Superboy” takes a stab at the plot of “The Terminator” as an android comes back through time to destroy Superboy so his descendants cant protect the future. In episode 169 of the Man of Screen podcast, Mike Zummo will begin his coverage of Season 2 of the Salkind-produced “Superboy” television show and all the changes that brings. First, Mike will discuss quickly some of the changes made to the show behind the scenes as he gives a brief introduction to Season 2. The show made wholesale changes in front of the camera, including the title character and introduces Gerard Christopher as Superboy, taking over for John Haymes Newton. First, were going to be cordially invited to a familiar character with a new face. Lex Luthor is back in town and hes hearing wedding bells. And whos the blushing bride-to-be? Well, hes after Lana. Whose face does Luthor have now? If hes trying to hide from Superboy, why is he telling Superboy who he is? But practice your vows and repeat after me, “With This Ring, I Thee Kill”. And then what weve got here is the second part of a story started in the first officer. Superboy has to recover from what happened to him in the first episode. Hes hurt and his powers are week, and hes in costume at the hospital. Lex and Lana are still married, but the situation is going to resolve itself as we get “Lex Luthor: Sentenced to Death”. Next time: Coverage of Season 2 of “Superboy” continues with “Metallo” and “Young Dracula”.Feedback for this show can be sent to: manofscreen@gmail.comCheck out the homepage for the show. In episode 166 of the Man of Screen podcast, Mike Zummo begins his final three episodes covering the first season of the Salkind-produced Superboy series. First, were going to meet some aliens. Or are they aliens. Maybe not. Theyre from somewhere or someone else. Theyve got a ship that may be a time machine. The one thing it isnt is as sickly sounding as another time travelers ship. Well, they need something because of course they do. And theyre going to have Superboy get it for them. Or theyre going to do something awful to someone Superboy cares about. Sound familiar? Of course it does. But who is this woman? Is she human? Or is she a “Mutant”? And then were going home. Yes, to Smallville where Jonathan Kent is going to find himself stalked by an old army buddy. Weve seen Jonathan Kent fight with his fists so far in this show, but does he fight also with his mouth and his mind? Youre going to have to find out as we encounter the “Phantom of the Third Division”. Next time: Its the penultimate episode of Season 1 coverage with “Black Flamingo” and “Hollywood”.Feedback for this show can be sent to: manofscreen@gmail.com Check out the homepage for the show. In episode 165 of the Man of Screen Podcast, Mike Zummo continues his run through two more episodes of the Salkind-produced “Superboy” television show. Were getting toward the end of Season 1 as this episode brings us into the seasons 20th episode. First, our Shuster Herald gang is going to check out this corporation and its scientist who is trying develop artificial intelligence. Because this ALWAYS leads to something good in a science-fiction series, doesnt it? I guess some writers never learn. And apparently the military doesnt learn either. Will there be peace or will we face the “War of the Species”? And then were going to encounter an episode with a guest star with a bright future. Thats right, Joaquin Phoenix, the Boy Who Would Be Joker, gets an early-career guest spot on “Superboy”. Hes going to be a computer genius. Hes going to hack the Pentagon, all in an effort to win over the girl of his dreams with some poetry. So Ill get the bucket, while you take in “Little Hercules”. Next time: The next two episodes of Season 1, “Mutant” and “Phantom of the Third Division”.Feedback for this show can be sent to: manofscreen@gmail.com Check out the homepage for the show. In episode 162 of the Man of Screen podcast, Mike Zummo takes a look at the first two-part episode of the Salkind-produced “Superboy” series. This episode is going to have everything you would come to expect from Mikes coverage of a two-part episode. Its going to be covered as two separate episode since thats how it aired and how do you like that? This episode is going to have something that you wouldnt expect from a show of this vintage. There will be CONTINUITY as this episode is written by Mike Carlin and Andy Helfer, two DC comics creators. See how they tie up all four of their episodes in one go. See the return of the gaseous opponent. See a possessed cop, see Pa Kent become accused of being a terrorist and see what happens when Pa and Lana are alone together. Its not what you think. But all that an “Revenge of the Alien.” Next time: “Stand Up and Get Knocked down” and “Meet Mr. Mxyzptlk”Feedback for this show can be sent to: manofscreen@gmail.com Check out the homepage for the show. It's Superman II - both versions! One of these cuts is an excellent movie, the other is so poor that it should be buried like the Arc of the Covenant and never viewed by human eyes again.Plus! It's part two of the tale of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and how Superman was taken from them. There's tragedy, their betrayal and there's a letter written to put a curse on the Superman movie. Really. Also! We bicker and undermine one another throughout. If that isn't what podcasts are for then I want no part of it.Please stay safe everybody. Listen to advice and tell all your friends about Is It A Bird. Thanks for downloading!email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod Instagram: search 'isitabirdpod' and look for the usual logoyoutube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g - stuff coming soon. It's Superman! And let me tell you: it's an utterly fantastic movie, this one! There's a baby in the room again. He's having a lovely old time but sometimes yelps when you're trying to say something pertinent about the history of comic books or the craft of filmmaking. If it bothers you, please email.Plus!Christopher Reeve completed Superman in the late 70s/early 80s and nobody else should even try. Honestly, Dean Cain aside, there's never been a better Superman on screen. We go into a number of reasons why and are sure you'll agree. Also!Hear the tale of Superman's origins. The villain, turned scientist, turned alien changed the world but the two lovely lads who created him weren't exactly lucky when shopping the Man of Steel around to comic book companies in the thirties. So unlucky in fact that they signed it all away at the first opportunity. Well, last week was rough, folks - I'm not going to lie. Losing a friend is always tough, especially when your friend had his head cut off by a psychopathic fan. But nevertheless, we here at Apocalypse Video are dedicated to bringing you the lost art of cinema, 24/7, and I'll be damned if we're going to end up missing our first ever Christmas Special just because of a simple little murder. I'm your host, David Snider, and joining me as we try our best to spread the magic of Christmas are fellow cinephiles Michael Althouse, our man in the machine Chad Griner, and the recently deceased Ryan Caldwell. Listen as we dissect the most magical product placement ever put into a film; the Salkind's try their best to ruin another beloved character; and finally, we find unexpected holiday cheer in seeing children become horribly disappointed by playing with defective toys. Be sure to rate, review, and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. What do you get when you cross a comedian with a squirrel? You get our next guest, formerly known as squirrel lady, Betsy Salkind. Betsy is a stand-up comedienne, Author, writer, and actress. After a short-lived career as a bank examiner for the Federal Reserve, Betsy discovered her true calling in comedy. Alongside writing for the popular sitcom Roseanne, she has written and performed three one-woman shows, authored an illustrated children's book called More Than Once Upon A Time and most recently featured in the Showtime special, Fierce Funny Women. Betsy is also is a paid regular at The World Famous Comedy Store. Betsy discusses how her skills in math helped her to develop a saving habit that enabled her to do a six-month trial run as a comic when she first started. Her healthy financial habits paid off, allowing her to stay in the game 30 years strong. One of her biggest lessons was learning to separate what she got paid as a comedian, to her true value as a person. Listen, learn and laugh with Bob and Betsy.
Jay Towers & Jim Bowers chat with Sam Rizzo about the Superboy TV show. From John Haymes Newton to Gerard Christopher and all of the Superman connections in the Salkind Universe.

GUYS. Really cool story on how Betsy met Roseanne and the unconventional way she got to be a writer on the original show. The cancelation of this show AND the reason for it affects her because all re-runs were pulled. Writers sometimes survive on money from re-runs. We talk about what it was like working for Roseanne back in the day and what she was like then vs. what she's like now. The difference is STARK, ya'll. We talk about the first 2 Superman movies (1978 and 1980), and in particular the craziness that was going on behind the scenes with Alexander and Ilya Salkind and Richard Donner, just to get these movies made! What was the original story arc supposed to look like? Why is it that when you watch the Donner cuts of Superman I and II they essentially have the same ending, with Superman turning the earth backward? We explain all this and more, including the cutthroat methods of the Salkinds, the removal of Richard Donner as director before Superman II and the subsequent rewrites and reshoots of much of his work on Superman II, the addition of Richard Lester, and the eventual creation of the Donner Cut of each film.
Betsy is a comic, writer, actor, and a foster mom. Sort of. She'll explain. We talk about her work at group home for teen girls, connecting with her foster daughter, her work in SAG, writing on Roseanne, and getting involved. When you make a Christmas film whose message is against the commercialization of Christmas, the one thing you shouldn't do is fill it with a bunch of gratuitous advertising. Also, if you are trying to right a ship that has gone very wrong with Superman III and Supergirl, you may not want to hire the same director as one of those flops for your next big budget idea. Sadly, that's exactly what Alexander and Ilya Salkind did with the big budget Santa Claus: The Movie (1985) starring Dudley Moore, John Lithgow, David Huddleston, and Burgess Meredith. Despite a whole lot of wrong, the film has since gone on to become a holiday favorite and cult classic. It's so bad, it's good. But we think we can do it better. We rethink the plot, shave some things off, add a lot more, and recast it. We also tease what a David Cronenberg version of the film might look like. Leave it to the Invasion of the Remake podcast to turn a sweet holiday film into your worst nightmare. Hilarious! On this episode, I am joined by Neil Salkind, who received his PhD from the University of Maryland in Human Development, and after teaching for 35 years at the University of Kansas, remains a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychology and Research in Education. His early interests were in the area of children’s cognitive development, and after research in the areas of cognitive style and (what was then known as) hyperactivity, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina’s Bush Center for Child and Family Policy. His work then changed direction to a focus on child and family policy, specifically the impact of alternative forms of public support on various child and family outcomes. He has delivered more than 150 professional papers and presentations; written more than 100 trade and textbooks; and is the author of Statistics for People Who (Think They) Hate Statistics (Sage), Theories of Human Development (Sage), and Exploring Research (Prentice Hall). He has edited several encyclopedias, including the Encyclopedia of Human Development, the Encyclopedia of Measurement and Statistics, and the recently published Encyclopedia of Research Design. He was also the editor of Child Development Abstracts and Bibliography for 13 years. Betsy Salkind is an actress, comedian, writer and former drummer for the PHENOBARBIDOLLS. She was a founding member of the TERRORIST BRIDESMAIDS (4 comediennes determined to get a second use out of those dresses), and alumna of the improv troupe GUILTY CHILDREN and the sketch comedy group THE OTHER WHITE MEAT. She was also a staffwriter for "SATURDAY NIGHT SPECIAL" and "ROSEANNE" (the sitcom), and a jokewriter for Anthony Robbins. Her stand up career includes an early banning in Boston, where she performed "The Emperor's Getting Fucked," a short piece about misogyny, racism, and viciousness in the comedy clubs. Performed only twice, it caused a stir in the comedy community and took her for several years into the world of performance art. Several years later she reemerged in New York and LA comedy clubs and is a regular at NY's Comic Strip and LA's Comedy Store, and has appeared on "Girls Night Out," "Stand-Up, Stand-Up," "ARLI$$," "Pet Shop with Andy Kindler," the "TONIGHT SHOW WITH JAY LENO," and most recently in the SHOWTIME special "Fierce Funny Women." She has written and performed 3 one woman shows to date, including "ALL MY LIFE" (the darkest comedy this side of hope), "MASTER OF SCIENCE" (an irreverent look at science and scientists), and most recently "ANNE FRANK SUPERSTAR: THE ETHEL SPILIOTES STORY" (a satire of Anne Franxploitation). Born in Troy, New York and razed in Connecticut and Virginia, she was not the funny one in her family. As a child she put on plays with her brothers in which she was always cast as the wicked witch or cruel stepsister. She graduated from MIT with a BS and a Master's degree from the Sloan School of Management. Her master's thesis was titled: "Can't You Take A Joke? A Study of Sexual Harassment Among Peers." Preferring the security of the arts, she left her career as a Federal Reserve Bank Examiner to become a comedian. She is perhaps best know for her squirrel impression, but refuses to be pigeonholed as a squirrel. She is currently developing an animated series based on Ethel, the lead character from Anne Frank Superstar, as well as a comedic play about depression. She is also producing a feature documentary with Amy Kofman of Jane Doe Films ("Derrida"), and writes for "ETHEL'S LAW"(a blog by a 5th grade activist who has turned her girl scout troop into a revolutionary cell.) She is the author of "More Than Once Upon A Time" (2006), a short, illustrated children's-style book that tells the story of a child who is raped by her father and his friends, but manages to overcome it and then ruin his life, as well as the hilarious "Betsy's Sunday School Bible Classics" (2008). In her spare time, Betsy lobbies and organizes for the National Association to Protect Children, and was instrumental in changing CA law to offer equal protection to children sexually abused by family members. Betsy was Andy Kindler's Tae Kwon Do sparring partner, and hangs her own drywall. She has 28 teeth.
