Ilya Salkind is one of the movie's executive producers that started the superhero genre. Superman: The Movie in 1978 taught audiences that you can believe a man can fly. Salkind's father Alexander acquired the rights to make the movie, and its sequels, Superman II and Superman III. He also exec-produced 1984's Supergirl starring Helen Slater. In this episode, Salkind gives an in-depth conversation about making those movies. He discussed casting Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman, and the legendary Marlon Brando. He also revealed that there was a draft of a never-made Superman V. Entitled Superman Reborn, this script was performed recently as a stage reading, the audio of which will be featured in next week's podcast episode. Salkind explains how the idea of doing the reading came to be, and how he uncovered the draft of Superman Reborn. Proceeds from the reading went to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. After the box office success of Superman II, the Salkinds wasted no time developing a story for the next entry in the cinematic saga of the Man of Steel. Ilya Salkind created an 8 page story outline for a third … Continue reading →
Original Airdate 6/18/13 - This episode has been edited from it's original broadcast. To celebrate the release of Man of Steel we look at the entire Christopher Reeve Superman franchise in a special 2-hour + podcast! It features the usual hosts of Mark Radulich and Sean Comer and they are joined by Robert Winfree and Robert Cooper. In 1973, producer Ilya Salkind convinced his father Alexander to buy the film rights to Superman. They hired Mario Puzo to pen a two-film script, and negotiated with Steven Spielberg to direct, though Alexander eventually landed on someone else. Superman (1978) and Superman II (1980) were shot simultaneously. For the third installment, Ilya Salkind wrote a treatment that expanded the film's scope to a cosmic scale, introducing villains Brainiac and Mister Mxyzptlk, as well as Supergirl. Warner Bros., however, rejected and retooled the script into their own film, trimming Brainiac down into the film's evil "ultimate computer". The final product co-starred comedian Richard Pryor as computer wizard Gus Gorman, who—under the manipulation of a millionaire magnate—creates a form of Kryptonite that turns Superman into an evil self.Cannon Films picked up an option for a fourth film, directed by Sidney J. Furie, with Reeve reprising the role due to his interest in the film's topic regarding nuclear weapons. Several others reprised their roles as well, including Kidder (Lois Lane) and Hackman (Lex Luthor). However, Cannon decided to cut the budget, resulting in poor special effects and heavy re-editing, which contributed to the film's poor reception.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsoFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's Verbal Diorama's Heroes Across the Decades miniseries, continuing into the 1970s! Whether you know him as Clark Kent, Kal-El, the Man of Steel, the Man of Tomorrow, or just as Superman, that famous tights-and-cape combo emblazoned with the S on his chest is a symbol of a lot of things: Hope, courage, freedom, love... truth, justice and the American way, and a movie with a rich history in comic books, that was made in part because of Zorro, and in another due to 1966's Batman. The late Christopher Reeve is perfectly cast as both Clark Kent and Superman, in a landmark superhero film by the late Richard Donner. Donner's personality clashes with father-and-son producers Alexander and Ilya Salkind led to him being fired from Superman II, despite him completing reportedly 75% of the sequel.... It's Christmas commentary time again as Dustin & Nik trim the cherry bomb tree and watch the 1985 mega-budget Kris Kringle origin story, Santa Claus The Movie! What other Christmas classic opens with Santa Claus, his wife and reindeer freezing to death in a blizzard and closes with John Lithgow tumbling to a nightmarish death in the cold, lonely vacuum of space? Superman producers Alexander and Ilya Salkind squeeze Santa through their Man of Steel mold and deliver a truly bizarre yet good hearted tale of a resurrected Zombie Claus who delivers crappy wooden toys to ungrateful brats who prefer explosive, radioactive candy from a traitorous, sell-out elf. Join us for a nostalgic trip through a sweet, disturbing and magical holiday gift from grinchy, elf-hating director Jeannot Szwarc that Lithgow called "the tackiest movie I've ever been in". Season's Greetings!

Richard Donner had just directed The Omen when he was asked he would direct a Superman movie for one million dollars. He would then spend over two years of his life dealing with problems and frustrations that he couldn’t have imagined. Just as Kal-El was sent by his parents to Earth from a dying planet in order to save him, so too did Alexander and Ilya Salkind try to save their dying franchise by trying to spin it off with a new character with Kara, Superman's cousin, better known as Supergirl! Things didn't quite go according to plan, however. Helen Slater is fetching in the title role, and Faye Dunaway suitably sinister, in the best of ways, as Selena, the sexy and scheming sorceress out to conquer the world. Is it fun? Is it dumb? Is it dumb fun? Yes, yes, and yes!

We talk about the first 2 Superman movies (1978 and 1980), and in particular the craziness that was going on behind the scenes with Alexander and Ilya Salkind and Richard Donner, just to get these movies made! What was the original story arc supposed to look like? Why is it that when you watch the Donner cuts of Superman I and II they essentially have the same ending, with Superman turning the earth backward? We explain all this and more, including the cutthroat methods of the Salkinds, the removal of Richard Donner as director before Superman II and the subsequent rewrites and reshoots of much of his work on Superman II, the addition of Richard Lester, and the eventual creation of the Donner Cut of each film.

When you make a Christmas film whose message is against the commercialization of Christmas, the one thing you shouldn't do is fill it with a bunch of gratuitous advertising. Also, if you are trying to right a ship that has gone very wrong with Superman III and Supergirl, you may not want to hire the same director as one of those flops for your next big budget idea. Sadly, that's exactly what Alexander and Ilya Salkind did with the big budget Santa Claus: The Movie (1985) starring Dudley Moore, John Lithgow, David Huddleston, and Burgess Meredith. Despite a whole lot of wrong, the film has since gone on to become a holiday favorite and cult classic. It's so bad, it's good. But we think we can do it better. We rethink the plot, shave some things off, add a lot more, and recast it. We also tease what a David Cronenberg version of the film might look like. Leave it to the Invasion of the Remake podcast to turn a sweet holiday film into your worst nightmare. Hilarious!
