Editors - Julie Cohen ACE and David Rogers ACE The Paper editors Julie Cohen and David Rogers first began collaborating on another Greg Daniels series, Space Force. Although that series was not in the same "mock doc" format as The Paper, David's first show with Daniels was. And that series was The Office, where he served as both editor and director. Both Julie and David felt at home with The Paper's faux documentary format however, with David having worked on The Office and Julie receiving multiple Emmy nominations for her work on the unscripted series, Project Runway. The Paper follows up on the story from The Office, as the documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch discovers a disappearing Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters. This mockumentary follows the daily lives and struggles of dreamers in love with journalism, and their less-than-competent co-workers, trying to deliver accurate news without the resources or training to do a great job. JULIE COHEN ACE Julie Cohen "loves to edit!" and considers herself lucky to have done it a lot over the last twenty years. She's edited across genres: documentary, reality, comedy, drama, sometimes all at once. Highlights include Project Runway, On Becoming a God in Central Florida, and Space Force. Most recently, she edited a bunch of episodes of Hulu's Tell Me Lies, starting with the pilot and including both season finales. DAVID ROGERS ACE David Rogers wanted to be a director since seeing Superman The Movie at the age of 8, and shot videos and films throughout high school and college. Following that he would move to L.A. and work as an Assistant Editor and then Editor on such shows as Seinfeld, NewsRadio, Andy Richter Controls The Universe, Entourage, The Comeback, and The Office. David started directing on The Office and directed shows like Parks and Recreation and The Mindy Project, where he also served as Co-Executive Producer. David is also the owner of a huge Superman collection and a Knight Rider replica which he's currently in the process of modifying. It's our 300th episode. Why not celebrate with a bang. One of the best superhero movies of all time according to some. Maybe we will think the same thing.
Christopher Reeve donned the blue tights and red cape of the Man of Steel while Margot Kidder played the plucky, spelling-challenged reporter Lois Lane in 1978's “Superman: The Movie.”
With James Gunn's Superman still in theaters, Mark and John try to understand why the modern Right hates it so much - not just the movie, but the character. Why do they fixate on words like "refugee" in their anti-"woke" hysteria and why is Superman just not Homelander enough for them?
In light of the new James Gunn film Superman, Mark, Lawrence, Sarahlyn, and Al talk about the character, his stories, and past films and shows. Did Zack Snyder (Man of Steel) miss the point? Are the Richard Donner films (chiefly 1978's Superman: The Movie) as good as nostalgia would have us recall them? How does one write a convincing plot centered around a flawless, basically all-powerful hero? How should the Lex Luthor character fit in? Get an ad-free experience, plus bonus talking for this and nearly every episode at patreon.com/prettymuchpop for only the tiniest per-month financial pledge, or you can sign up directly with Apple Podcasts for a subscription for ad-free and bonus material for three of Mark's podcasts together on the Mark Lintertainment Podcasts Channel.

Send us a textChristopher Reeve soars into cinema history in 1978's "Superman," a groundbreaking film that established the superhero blockbuster format we know today. Before Marvel, before Batman's dark reinvention, this was the movie that convinced audiences a man could truly fly. What makes this film so captivating decades later isn't just its place in history, but how it fearlessly embraces both cosmic scale and intimate humanity. From the crystalline landscapes of Krypton to the bustling newsroom of the Daily Planet, the film takes viewers on a journey that feels both alien and deeply familiar. Reeve's performance remains the gold standard for superhero portrayals - his ability to transform between the regal Man of Steel and the bumbling Clark Kent with nothing more than posture, voice, and confidence is a masterclass in acting that later Superman actors still measure themselves against. The film's vintage charm extends to its supporting cast and villainous plot. Margot Kidder's Lois Lane balances professional ambition with romantic vulnerability, while Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor occupies an underground lair beneath Grand Central Station that ranks among cinema's most memorable villain headquarters. The special effects, revolutionary for their time, might seem quaint today but still evoke wonder in their creativity and ambition. When Superman reverses Earth's rotation to turn back time - a moment of pure comic book logic - the film confidently embraces its fantastical nature rather than apologizing for it.Superman (1978) wasn't constrained by established superhero formulas because it was creating them. This freedom allowed for creative choices that modern superhero films might shy away from, yet they contribute to the film's enduring charm. Want to understand why superhero films dominate today's box office? Look no further than this pioneering classic that made us all believe a man could fly. Watch (or rewatch) it today and experience the birth of a genre that would eventually reshape cinema itself.Twitter handles:Project Geekology: https://twitter.com/pgeekologyAnthony's Twitter: https://twitter.com/odysseyswowDakota's Twitter: https://twitter.com/geekritique_dakInstagram:https://instagram.com/projectgeekology?igshid=1v0sits7ipq9yYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@projectgeekologyGeekritique (Dakota):https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBwciIqOoHwIx_uXtYTSEbASupport the show

In this special episode of Fan Effect, ripped from the streams of our friend Rachel Wagner at the Hallmarkies Podcast, producer KellieAnn Halvorsen discusses the latest “Superman” movie, and in particular, the lasting love of Lois Lane and Clark Kent. Darin Lundberg of the NostalgiaCast Podcast joins Rachel and KellieAnn for a masculine perspective on the beloved pair. Not only do they dive into a (spoiler-filled) review of the 2025/James Gunn’s version of the Man of Steel, but they look deeply into the 1978 “Superman: The Movie,” which provides a great foundational gateway for learning about The Man from Krypton. “You've got ME? Who's got YOU?!?Lois LaneWith a new Superman movie now in theaters (James Gunn's aptly titled Superman) it's time to take a look at one of the biggest conundrums in all of popular culture. Just where do Superman's powers come from? While there have been conflicting explanations for this given by comics, TV shows, animated series, and movies through the decades, one point has taken hold pretty solidly for most of the character's eight-plus decades: many of Superman's powers come from the fact that he comes from a race of aliens who developed under a red sun, which means our more intensely radiant yellow sun charges up his cells and gives him his amazing abilities. The nature of Superman's powers had been addressed in different ways in the comics over the years (at one point, ALL Kryptonians were simply born with super powers, before explanations like Earth's lighter gravity, our yellow sun, and others were added to the mythos). But the first media adaptation that really tried to address the source of his powers came with Richard Donner's masterful Superman: The Movie (1978). In that film, no less than Marlon Brando as Jor-El patiently explains to the audience the ways a Kryptonian would adapt to Earth's environment and the powers one might get.Look, there's only so much realism we can expect with a character like Superman, who is more of an ideal to strive for than a hard science fiction character. But we dive into the science and the story, and also discuss the timeless vibes that make that first proper Superman movie such an enduring classic in this episode.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9jeGwHn57EFURTHER VIEWINGMuch of this episode's discussion was based around two of the best superhero movies ever made, Superman (1978) and Superman II (1980). While Christopher Reeve might be the most perfect piece of superhero casting ever, the other two movies in that franchise are uneven at best. But there's other Superman media that address the source of the Man of Steel's powers! While divisive, Zack Snyder's Man of Steel made a valiant effort to explain why Superman can do the things he does (including the yellow sun). And James Gunn's currently in theaters Superman (2025) leans heavily on the solar power angle. It's also just an absolute blast and the best superhero movie in years.FURTHER READINGKrypton and Its SunThere are two main ingredients in Superman's home planet that are said to contribute to his powers on Earth. One is that Krypton itself is habitable (and potentially with heavier gravity), and in order for that to be the case, it has to exist in the habitable zone of the star it orbits. Proxima Centauri B is one such world that has captured scientists' attention. The one more relevant to today's discussion is that Superman was born under a red sun, which makes Earth's yellow sun supercharge his cells. In Krypton's case, that's a dying star known as a red giant. Which brings us to…A quick guide to the different colors of stars. Although, as Hakeem points out, Earth's sun isn't yellow, but green! Eventually, it will turn red, but that's a problem none of us will be around to see.KryptochondriaWe all remember photosynthesis from elementary school, right? But in order for human (or animal in the case of Krypto the Superdog) cells to be charged up with solar radiation to the degree necessary for superheroics, cellular organelles and ribosomes would have to function differently. Also the amount of the neurotransmitter known as adenosine triphosphate (creatine devotees know all about ATP) it would take to generate the energy for super-feats is prohibitive. We confess that following Hakeem on the matter of the absorption spectrum is a little challenging, but don't just take our word for it! Failed Flying Techniques and More!Tamara gives us a red giant batch of story analysis and background info in this one, but because seeing is believing, some stuff is better watched than read. For more context on Superman: The Movie and the incredible effort it took to make you believe a man could fly, check out The Magic Behind the Cape (where we get the “best special effect of all” that Tamara quotes) and Front Projection 101. Also, somewhere on a Superman: The Movie Blu-ray extra that doesn't appear to be online, there is video evidence of the “dummy shot out of an air cannon” failed flying technique Tamara brings up, but we can't link it here! Show notes provided by Joe PelusoTen days before Christmas, 1978 cinema fans of all ages were the recipients of a wonderful gift--"...the gift of flight". It was THE Christmas Season that delivered the granddaddy of all super-hero films--SUPERMAN:THE MOVIE. Come with us now as we break through the earthly bonds of time and space, and join your hosts James, Richie and Joe for a trek back to the late 1970's (Disco, Yankees World Championships, polyester, and incredible films) as they critique the film that made "you believe a man could fly". From the sterile surface of Krypton, to the rolling corn fields of Kansas, onto the concrete canyons of Metropolis, the guys relive the grand adventure that reintroduced The Man of Steel toa world much in need of an iconic hero. Superman/Clark Kent, Jor-El and Lara, Ma and Pa Kent, Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Perry White, Otis, Miss Teschmacher(!), and of course the villain everyone loves to hate--Lex Luthor--all brought to vivid life by skilled actors, and a visionary director; a cast of creatives that took the spawn of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and delivered an offering that would forever alter the genre of heroic cinema. The guys discuss all these aspects of the film, and more as they have a "super" time getting caught up in a wild comic book fantasy that continues to deliver the adventure, excitement, romance, and laughs nearly a halfcentury after its bombastic debut! I know I speak for James and Richie, when I say we had aKrypton-sized blast recording this special episode.. And we hope you will experience the same fun when you give it a listen. Just be sure to look up in the sky because as Lois Lane found out to her amazement after Superman rescues her for the first time--in SUPERMAN you always have "a friend".
"You'll believe a man can fly" the tagline for one of the highest rated superhero movies ever made about who I believe is the greatest superhero ever created! That's right, we are talking about the Richard Donner 1978, Superman: The Movie starring Christopher Reeve and this week also happens to be the premier of the new Superman movie directed by James Gunn! DC Comics's Superman franchise, based on the character of the same name created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in June 1938, has seen the release of various films since its inception.[1]The character debuted in cinemas in a series of animated shorts beginning in 1941 and was the protagonist of two movie serials in 1948 and 1950. An independent studio, Lippert Pictures, released the first Superman feature film, Superman and the Mole Men, starring George Reeves, in 1951. In 1973, the film rights to the Superman character were purchased by Ilya Salkind, Alexander Salkind, and Pierre Spengler. After multiple scripts and several years in development, Richard Donner was hired as director, and he shot two films, Superman (1978) (marketed as Superman: The Movie), and Superman II (1980), at the same time, both starring Christopher ReeveHosted by Ausha. THE MOVIE SPIDER-MAN 2 OWED EVERYTHING TO! Superman: The Movie was generational. So much so that Donner and the Salkinds saw it preemptively and had a sequel made in tandem with the first! Unfortunately, despite the promise of a release the year after, the highly-anticipated sequel was delayed to 1980 in light of Donner being fired and a lot of the movie being reshot. After many years and public demand, his cut wouldn't release until 2006, making do with camera tests and newly-shot footage to fill out the blank spots. So, how did it fare? Tune in to find out as Brian and Alec continue the Supermanathon with Richard Donner's (close-to) original cut of SUPERMAN II!

It's Timeline time everyone! Because we're continuing our look at Michael Crichton's movie adaptations that arn't Jurassic Park. The year is 2003, Richard Donner (director of Superman: The Movie) decided to gather up Paul Walker, Gerry Butler, Frances O'Connor and Billy Connolly to do a big time travel to the year 1357 in order to run around a bit and cause of ruckus. Not the best Michael Crichton adaptation, some would even consider it the worst. And maybe it is.
