In this lively and irreverent episode of The Middle of Culture, Peter and Eden build a tier list ranking 29 DC movies, from the highs of Christopher Reeve's iconic Superman to the lows of Black Adam, which earns a new category all its own: "F*** You Forever." Along the way, they debate the merits of Nolan's Batman trilogy, praise Margot Robbie while trashing her material, and wax poetic about Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman and the ridiculous joy of Catwoman (2004). The episode also dives into recent reads, including the emotionally devastating Adachi and Shimamura 99.9, with Eden delivering an impassioned recounting that might just wreck you. Add in some heat-dome weather talk, tech-death music recs, and plenty of hot takes, and you've got one of the most entertaining episodes yet.Episode Notes:Welcome BackEden shares weather misery and emotional tales of crying over Adachi and ShimamuraPeter updates on his son's relentless swim meet schedule and praises the dedication of teen athletesWhat We're IntoEden continues to love The Apothecary Diaries, now reading it aloud with CassiDeep emotional dive into Adachi and Shimamura 99.9, including:Cozy slice-of-life momentsPost-apocalyptic existentialismA bittersweet afterlife reunion that left Eden in tearsPeter shares his current reading on behavior change and playing Mario Kart with the kidsMetal music recs from Peter:Fallujah and Exocrine (tech-death highlights)Sigh's re-recording of Hangman's Hymn (2007 → 2025 edition)The Tier List Begins29 DC movies ranked from S-tier to a newly invented bottom tierImmediate praise for Superman: The Movie -- the only true S-tier filmBatman Begins and The Batman hold strong in A-tierThe Dark Knight lands at a controversial B, Dark Knight Rises flops to DSurprising affection for Catwoman bumps it up to C, while Suicide Squad, Justice League, and Black Adam are rightfully trashedEden passionately defends the joyfully chaotic Batman & Robin, despite its executionZack Snyder's Justice League makes it to B solely for its absurdityLego Batman wins hearts, even from Eden who has a Lego movie vendettaNew Tier Created: "F*** You Forever"Reserved exclusively for Black Adam, a film so despised that Peter stopped watching anything with The Rock afterwardWrap-UpOne clear conclusion: 1978's Superman stands unmatchedRichard Donner hailed as the god-tier director James Gunn can't touchGentle roast of MCU's decline vs DC's chaotic legacyCall to action: listeners encouraged to weigh in via feedback@themiddleofculture.com

It's Timeline time everyone! Because we're continuing our look at Michael Crichton's movie adaptations that arn't Jurassic Park. The year is 2003, Richard Donner (director of Superman: The Movie) decided to gather up Paul Walker, Gerry Butler, Frances O'Connor and Billy Connolly to do a big time travel to the year 1357 in order to run around a bit and cause of ruckus. Not the best Michael Crichton adaptation, some would even consider it the worst. And maybe it is. YOU'LL BELIEVE A MAN CAN FLY! We are five weeks out from the next iteration of the man of tomorrow, which means it's time to go back to where it all began -- not only for him, but for comic book movies as a whole! This classic that introduced Christopher Reeve to the world changed the landscape of blockbuster filmmaking forever, but does it still hold up? Join Brian and Alec to find out as they begin the Supermanathon with the film that defined the character -- Richard Donner's SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE!
Episode 319. We quick-change into our capes for an episode on Richard Donner's 1978 Superman: The Movie. This has all the classic Superman iconography you know and love, plus a complicated real estate scheme where Lex Luthor wants to sink the California coastline to make a new one. We discuss the strange pacing that makes you wait nearly an hour to see Superman in action, the surprisingly sincere romance (and horniness), Jor-El being a busy dad with two jobs, Midwestern wheat fields, how we expect James Gunn's Superman to emulate this or step away from it, and if we'll ever see a big-screen Superman with a mullet like that one comic from the 1990s.Click here to watch a video of this episode. From the ice-planet origin of Kal-El and his upbringing as mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent (Christopher Reeve, Somewhere in Time, Deathtrap), to his first heroic rescue of Lois Lane (Margot Kidder, The Amityville Horror, Black Christmas) atop a perilous helicopter and the iconic flight over Metropolis, this film defined comic-book cinema. Gene Hackman (Oscar-winner for The French Connection, Unforgiven) delights as the conniving Lex Luthor, whose audacious plot to trigger a California earthquake with stolen nuclear missiles pits the Man of Steel against his deadliest foe. Marlon Brando (Oscar-winner for The Godfather, Apocalypse Now) lends gravitas as Superman's father Jor-El, while Ned Beatty (iconic in Network, Deliverance) brings comic relief as the bumbling henchman Otis. Jackie Cooper (veteran of The Bowery Boys series and The People vs. Noah Drake) anchors the Daily Planet as Perry White, and Glenn Ford (star of Gilda, Blackboard Jungle) moves hearts as Jonathan Kent. Expect some mutant level banter about the racist Batman serials of the 1940's, TV offerings including THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, WONDER WOMAN, and THE INCREDIBLE HULK, the lightning in a bottle that was SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE, the unrivaled success of the MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE, the hit-but-mostly-miss offerings of the D.C. EXTENDED UNIVERSE, and so much more! But is the world's obsession with superheroes dwindling? Have recent big-budget failures contributed to this "cape fatigue." Will D.C. ever get its superpowered act together? And is the MCU's Phase IV a gamble that will pay off? We're talkin' to you FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS! Graciously helping us tackle these questions is a first-time guest of MONSTER PARTY! He's a critically acclaimed comedian, talk show host, political satirist, actor, podcaster, author, and superhero aficionado, who happens to be great at just about everything. Please welcome... From emotional storytelling to groundbreaking special effects, they discuss why this film remains a gold standard for superhero origin stories. Plus, they analyze how this Superman set the stage for the modern superhero genre and what lessons James Gunn might take for the upcoming Superman: Legacy. Strap in for a nostalgic and insightful discussion on the film that made audiences "believe a man could fly!" Timestamps and Topics: 00:00 – Introduction: Wrapping up John Williams Month with Superman (1978) 00:14 – First Impressions: How many times have we seen this classic? 00:24 – Christopher Reeve's Impact: The definitive Superman 00:47 – The Heart of Superman: Why this film still resonates 01:09 – The Film's Strengths & Weaknesses: Does it hold up today? 01:50 – Superman's Influence on Modern Superhero Films 02:30 – Lex Luthor's Portrayal: Gene Hackman's unique take on the character 03:00 – Iconic Moments & Special Effects: The magic of practical effects 04:00 – John Williams' Score: How music makes Superman feel larger than life 04:45 – The Legacy of Superman (1978): What it teaches today's superhero movies 05:30 – Looking Forward: Hopes for Superman: Legacy Key Takeaways: Christopher Reeve set the gold standard for Superman. His portrayal remains unmatched in charm, confidence, and hope. John Williams' score is a character in itself. The music elevates key moments, making them feel larger than life. The film's practical effects were groundbreaking. The flying sequences and large-scale destruction still hold up in many ways. Lex Luthor was portrayed with a mix of comedy and intelligence. Gene Hackman's take on the character remains a unique interpretation. Superman's humanity makes him relatable. His emotional reactions, especially to Lois Lane, show why he's a compelling hero. The newsroom setting perfectly captured the hustle of journalism. Perry White, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen brought energy to The Daily Planet. Without Superman (1978), modern superhero films wouldn't exist as we know them. The film paved the way for serious and big-budget superhero storytelling. Memorable Quotes:

"I'M GOING TO GET SICK." Long before the days of Blade, X-Men, and Spider-Man, Marvel films were borderline nonexistent. Only a handful got made, and none on the theatrical level of endeavors such as Superman: The Movie or Batman 1989. One such endeavor was the Yugoslavian-produced venture based on Marvel's Star Spangled Man with a Plan. The film has become subject to jest and ridicule over the years, and it's time to kick the dead horse yet again. So, come join Brian, Alec, Trey, and Darby as they take a look at Albert Pyun's CAPTAIN AMERICA!
In lieu of the upcoming reimagining of the character coming later this year by James Gunn, this month we are discussing the first two films from one of the most impactful superhero movie series in cinema history. Movies that continue to influence the comic book film genre we consistently enjoy these days. Writer-director Lowell Dean has two movies coming out this year; the first, Dark Match, hits Canadian theatres and lands on Shudder in the US this Friday, January 31st. And to celebrate its arrival, he's here to talk about Richard Donner's 1978 blockbuster Superman: The Movie -- which defined superhero cinema, made instant stars out of Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder, and got a generation to believe a man can fly. Your genial host Norm Wilner always knew, of course.
Ilya Salkind is one of the movie's executive producers that started the superhero genre. Superman: The Movie in 1978 taught audiences that you can believe a man can fly. Salkind's father Alexander acquired the rights to make the movie, and its sequels, Superman II and Superman III. He also exec-produced 1984's Supergirl starring Helen Slater. In this episode, Salkind gives an in-depth conversation about making those movies. He discussed casting Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman, and the legendary Marlon Brando. He also revealed that there was a draft of a never-made Superman V. Entitled Superman Reborn, this script was performed recently as a stage reading, the audio of which will be featured in next week's podcast episode. Salkind explains how the idea of doing the reading came to be, and how he uncovered the draft of Superman Reborn. Proceeds from the reading went to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. Host Anthony Desiato and guest Bernie Gerstmayr (Aw Yeah Comics) dig into what is generally regarded as one of the very best — if not THE best — superhero films of all time: 1978's SUPERMAN from director Richard Donner, which prioritized verisimilitude in its earnest, reverent approach and introduced audiences to Christopher Reeve as the Man of Steel. Anthony and Bernie discuss the four major acts of the film as they follow Kal-El from Krypton to Smallville, then Metropolis, and ultimately the deserts of California for the film's iconic (though debated) finale.Support the show and receive exclusive podcast content at Patreon.com/AnthonyDesiato, including the spinoff podcasts BEYOND METROPOLIS and DIGGING FOR JUSTICE!Visit BCW Supplies and use promo code FSP to save 10% on your next order of comics supplies.
