Dana and Tom with 5x Club Member, Shane Rogers (Comedian and Host of Midnight Facts for Insomniacs) discuss the sci-fi thriller, Ex Machina (2015): written and directed by Alex Garland, cinematography by Rob Hardy, music by Geoff Barrow and Ben Salisbury, starring Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac, and Alicia Vikander.Plot Summary: Ex Machina is a cerebral sci-fi thriller written and directed by Alex Garland. The story follows Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson), a young programmer who wins a company contest to spend a week at the secluded estate of his reclusive boss, Nathan (Oscar Isaac), a brilliant but eccentric tech CEO. Upon arrival, Caleb learns he has been selected to participate in a Turing test for Ava (Alicia Vikander), an advanced AI housed in a humanoid robot. MONSTER PARTY GETS TIME STONED! JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD use THE EYE OF AGAMOTTO to predict the fate of the current trend of meta-human films. It's a cacophony of caped crusading conjecture, presenting the question, "What is ... THE FUTURE OF SUPERHEROES!!!" In this episode, we chronicle the fantastic evolution of screen superheroes from past to present, and what might lie ahead. Expect some mutant level banter about the racist Batman serials of the 1940's, TV offerings including THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, WONDER WOMAN, and THE INCREDIBLE HULK, the lightning in a bottle that was SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE, the unrivaled success of the MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE, the hit-but-mostly-miss offerings of the D.C. EXTENDED UNIVERSE, and so much more! But is the world's obsession with superheroes dwindling? Have recent big-budget failures contributed to this "cape fatigue." Will D.C. ever get its superpowered act together? And is the MCU's Phase IV a gamble that will pay off? We're talkin' to you FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS! Graciously helping us tackle these questions is a first-time guest of MONSTER PARTY! He's a critically acclaimed comedian, talk show host, political satirist, actor, podcaster, author, and superhero aficionado, who happens to be great at just about everything. Please welcome... In this episode of Challenge Accepted, Frank and Thomas wrap up John Williams Month with a deep dive into the 1978 classic Superman: The Movie! They explore the film's lasting impact on superhero cinema, Christopher Reeve's legendary performance, and how John Williams' iconic score helped define the Man of Steel. From emotional storytelling to groundbreaking special effects, they discuss why this film remains a gold standard for superhero origin stories. Plus, they analyze how this Superman set the stage for the modern superhero genre and what lessons James Gunn might take for the upcoming Superman: Legacy. Strap in for a nostalgic and insightful discussion on the film that made audiences "believe a man could fly!" Timestamps and Topics: 00:00 – Introduction: Wrapping up John Williams Month with Superman (1978) 00:14 – First Impressions: How many times have we seen this classic? 00:24 – Christopher Reeve's Impact: The definitive Superman 00:47 – The Heart of Superman: Why this film still resonates 01:09 – The Film's Strengths & Weaknesses: Does it hold up today? 01:50 – Superman's Influence on Modern Superhero Films 02:30 – Lex Luthor's Portrayal: Gene Hackman's unique take on the character 03:00 – Iconic Moments & Special Effects: The magic of practical effects 04:00 – John Williams' Score: How music makes Superman feel larger than life 04:45 – The Legacy of Superman (1978): What it teaches today's superhero movies 05:30 – Looking Forward: Hopes for Superman: Legacy Key Takeaways: Christopher Reeve set the gold standard for Superman. His portrayal remains unmatched in charm, confidence, and hope. John Williams' score is a character in itself. The music elevates key moments, making them feel larger than life. The film's practical effects were groundbreaking. The flying sequences and large-scale destruction still hold up in many ways. Lex Luthor was portrayed with a mix of comedy and intelligence. Gene Hackman's take on the character remains a unique interpretation. Superman's humanity makes him relatable. His emotional reactions, especially to Lois Lane, show why he's a compelling hero. The newsroom setting perfectly captured the hustle of journalism. Perry White, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen brought energy to The Daily Planet. Without Superman (1978), modern superhero films wouldn't exist as we know them. The film paved the way for serious and big-budget superhero storytelling. Memorable Quotes:

"I'M GOING TO GET SICK." Long before the days of Blade, X-Men, and Spider-Man, Marvel films were borderline nonexistent. Only a handful got made, and none on the theatrical level of endeavors such as Superman: The Movie or Batman 1989. One such endeavor was the Yugoslavian-produced venture based on Marvel's Star Spangled Man with a Plan. The film has become subject to jest and ridicule over the years, and it's time to kick the dead horse yet again. So, come join Brian, Alec, Trey, and Darby as they take a look at Albert Pyun's CAPTAIN AMERICA!
In lieu of the upcoming reimagining of the character coming later this year by James Gunn, this month we are discussing the first two films from one of the most impactful superhero movie series in cinema history. Movies that continue to influence the comic book film genre we consistently enjoy these days. With an iconic score by the equally iconic John Williams, a Life defining performance of Christopher Reeves as the titular character, and scripts written, surprisingly for this host, by the same man to create the godfather. Writer-director Lowell Dean has two movies coming out this year; the first, Dark Match, hits Canadian theatres and lands on Shudder in the US this Friday, January 31st. And to celebrate its arrival, he's here to talk about Richard Donner's 1978 blockbuster Superman: The Movie -- which defined superhero cinema, made instant stars out of Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder, and got a generation to believe a man can fly. Your genial host Norm Wilner always knew, of course.
Ilya Salkind is one of the movie's executive producers that started the superhero genre. Superman: The Movie in 1978 taught audiences that you can believe a man can fly. Salkind's father Alexander acquired the rights to make the movie, and its sequels, Superman II and Superman III. He also exec-produced 1984's Supergirl starring Helen Slater. In this episode, Salkind gives an in-depth conversation about making those movies. He discussed casting Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman, and the legendary Marlon Brando. He also revealed that there was a draft of a never-made Superman V. Entitled Superman Reborn, this script was performed recently as a stage reading, the audio of which will be featured in next week's podcast episode. Salkind explains how the idea of doing the reading came to be, and how he uncovered the draft of Superman Reborn. Proceeds from the reading went to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. Host Anthony Desiato and guest Bernie Gerstmayr (Aw Yeah Comics) dig into what is generally regarded as one of the very best — if not THE best — superhero films of all time: 1978's SUPERMAN from director Richard Donner, which prioritized verisimilitude in its earnest, reverent approach and introduced audiences to Christopher Reeve as the Man of Steel. Anthony and Bernie discuss the four major acts of the film as they follow Kal-El from Krypton to Smallville, then Metropolis, and ultimately the deserts of California for the film's iconic (though debated) finale.Support the show and receive exclusive podcast content at Patreon.com/AnthonyDesiato, including the spinoff podcasts BEYOND METROPOLIS and DIGGING FOR JUSTICE!Visit BCW Supplies and use promo code FSP to save 10% on your next order of comics supplies. In this episode we discuss whether reshoots are required for the new "Superman" movie, official synopsis for "Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story", special screenings for both "Superman: The Movie" and "Supergirl," Preview Trailer for "The Legend of Kingdom Come" documentary, Part 2 of our "Analyzing Clark Kent's Costume" series, your favorite Cyborg Superman comic book covers, and much more.
It's been a long time since we revisited the classics with Elijah (the last one was show 174 where we talked 60's Bond). It's way past time we returned to that fascinating series and our return is SUPER. Yes, we are talking Superman The Movie (1978) starring the late, great Christopher Reeve. A film so big we also had to bring in the talent that is Niall from Movies In Focus. Not only is Niall a fan of this film, he has previously discussed it with the film's legendary director Richard Donner. So, we have three fans in Niall, Graham and Jeff and newbe Elijah who had never seen it before (but, in an interesting contrast, is a fan of Zack Synder's take on the story). The scene is set for a fascinating discussion on a superhero from yesteryear. Just what will you learn listening to this podcast: - Who else was up for the role of Superman - How Brando jokingly described how he was going to play the role to Richard Donner - Who else was in the frame to write the music which has gone on to be one of John Williams most recognisable scores - Which one of the team thinks Margot Kidder is the ultimate Lois Lane (and how all the others then disagreed) - The original endings for Superman The Movie and Superman II. A podcast which like the film is big, full of fascinating points of view and facts. Even Jeff doesn't go off on one this time! Please let us know what you think – if you enjoy it, we will bring our version of the Justice League (and Graham's super villain) back to discuss Superman II. Until then, see you at The flicks, perhaps standing in line with Elijah for the James Gunn take on the caped crusader. Bye for now.
This Christmas in July, we are joined by Adam Richard on a sleigh ride that flies right past the Marvel Cinematic Universe and lands on Margot Kidder's rooftop in 1978. Which is, it turns out, not a bad place to be. It's The Return of Doctor Mysterio. Notes and links Steven Moffat's clear inspiration here is Richard Donner's Superman: The Movie (1978), an astonishingly well-made and entertaining superhero movie starring Christopher Reeve as Clark and the wonderful Margot Kidder as Lois. If you haven't seen it, put your phone down at once and go and find a copy. In Episode 271: Eels with Jazz Hands, we mentioned the previous life of director Ed Bazalgette as a member of 1980s one-hit wonder The Vapors. The one hit in question was called Turning Japanese, and it was a massive thing at the time. The CW superhero shows Peter mentions are collectively called the Arrowverse, which started just a few years before this episode aired, and which included shows like Arrow (2012), The Flash (2014), Supergirl (2015) and Legends of Tomorrow (2016), featuring our very own Arthur Darvill. Ang Lee's unloved film Hulk (2003) liberally used comic book panels to transition between scenes (in a way far more sophisticated than what's attempted in this Doctor Who episode). This brief video will give you the idea. It was Adam's job to watch Series 10 of Doctor Who as a regular on the ABC's Doctor Who aftershow Whovians, which covered Series 10 to 12 and screened a day or so after each episode aired. Brendan mentions the Matt Fleischer animated Superman films from the 1940s, particularly the kinds of villains this version of Superman routinely fought. In the second film, The Mechanical Monsters (1941), Superman confronts a group of giant robots who rob banks and museums and inspire artists and filmmakers for generations. Go and watch it at once. Attractive Coal Hill Academy student Ram loses a leg in the first episode of the Doctor Who spin-off Class, which screened over eight weeks leading up to the start of December 2016. And then no one ever mentioned it or even thought about it ever again. Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993) was an insanely popular television show in the 1990s, starring Teri Hatcher as Lois Lane and featuring the incredibly beautiful Dean Cain as Clark. (He's a horrid alt-right nutcase these days, which is a grim warning to all of us, I suppose.) Follow us Nathan is on X as @nathanbottomley, Brendan is @brandybongos, and Adam is @adamrichard. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. Adam Richard's daily Doctor Who podcast is called Adam Richard Has a Theory: it's the place to find Adam's hot-to-lukewarm takes and wild-to-really-quite-sensible theories about everything Doctor Who. You can follow Flight Through Entirety on Mastodon and Bluesky, as well as on X and Facebook. Our website is at flightthroughentirety.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we'll sneak into your bedroom and torture your favourite stuffed toy. Wait, no we won't. That would be awful. Sorry. And more You can find links to all of the podcasts we're involved in on our podcasts page. But here's a summary of where we're up to right now. 500 Year Diary is our latest new Doctor Who podcast, going back through the history of the show and examining new themes and ideas. It's first season came out early this year, under the title New Beginnings. Check it out. It will be back for a second season early in 2025. The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire has broadcast our hot takes on every new episode of Doctor Who since November last year, and it will be back again in 2025 for Season 2. There's also Startling Barbara Bain, our Space: 1999 commentary podcast. We've covered the first five episodes of Series 1; Episode 6 should be out in the next couple of weeks. The Three Handed Game is a podcast on The Avengers and The New Avengers. In the most recent episode, Brendan, Richard and Steven watched an episode from Diana Rigg's first series, Two's a Crowd. Brendan's gaming podcast is called The Bjay BJ Game Show, and in its most recent episode, Brendan and Bjay visited some tilt-shifted Minecraft-inspired holiday destinations in The Touryst. And finally there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. Last week, we visited the centre of the galaxy and met up with the Devil (who seemed nice) in an inexpensively produced episode of The Animated Series called The Magicks of Megas-Tu.
Episode 56: Drew and Nedim talk about the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine movie, Twisters opening box office performance, Smallville, the Talkville Podcast, Superman the Movie and more.
