Superheroes, Movies & Superhero Movies: A Cinema Heroes Podcast
It's time to wrap up the live-action Superman films (unless you count Superman and the Mole Men. Should we do Superman and the Mole Men??) with the 2006 film Superman Returns. Aptly titled, this film brought the Man of Steel back to the big screen after nearly 20 years. Critics seemed to like it but it was met with mixed reactions from moviegoers, which resulted in stalling Superman's movie career again for another seven years. What went right? What went wrong? And more importantly, does the film hold up? Check out what the guys think and let us know what you think of Superman Returns! Cinema Heroes YouTube Instagram

Haven't we seen this before? Tyler and Nate of Animorphing Time, The Bruce Campbell Podcast, and Hate Speech join us for the return to the subterranean world of those furry blue Molemen and mostly a recycling of footage we've seen before… and somehow it's more coherent than most episodes this season! Plus, we talk little green elf goblins, parallels to real-world foreign policy, and how capitalism destroyed the Molemen. We're watching Spider-Man (1967): Season 2, Episode 7: “Spiderman Battles the Molemen” (yes, that's how it's officially spelled). Estes Park is a gorgeous mountain city and one of Diane's favorite places in Colorado. F.O. Stanley would build the Stanley Hotel in this town, a hotel made famous by Stephen King in his book The Shining. King reputedly had unexplained experiences when he was a guest. The Shining was a story of a haunted man, a psychic boy and a haunted hotel. And the Stanley Hotel really does have a reputation for being haunted. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of the Stanley Hotel. August's theme is “ADOLESCENT POWER FANTASY” which means we're FINALLY getting to a Superhero movie theme, but we ain't gonna be watching some “Age of Ultron” shit yet because we're getting to the godfathers of where we're at today as well as adventure film influences from even earlier times. It's Superman week and we're revisiting the classics and starting with the first ever Superman feature film outside of a serialized format. The iconic George Reeves dons the cape in the 1951 feature “Superman and the Mole Men” which led directly into the popular 50s TV show. Clark Kent and Lois Lane go to write up a story about the world's deepest oil rig and it becomes a real story when little Mole Men pop out of a hatch and go peeping in windows and pissing off the townsfolk. Can Superman save these little dudes from a frothing mob? Nah. He fails actually. Then Superman gets murdered. Steve Boyle and Webb Wilder join us to present a project that has been in the works for decades and will emerge this year, we hope, on a radio near you! In the 1980s, Steve and Webb began working on a neo-noir detective series, riffing on the anti-commercial commercials that they produced for Hard Rock Cafe back in the day. It came from Nashville, first in the form of a proposed TV series, then a script, then a book, then an audiobook, and now a full-fledged radio show. You'll also get to hear the teaser for the show in this fun episode. The website for the project:https://webbwilderlastofthefullgrownmen.com/Webb's website:https://www.webbwilder.com/The First Amendment Project that Steve talks about:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-a3rRNYU8m8The Radio Station Webb talks about and where you can hear Webb in the afternoons:https://www.wmot.org/program-schedule#weekly-scheduleCity Without a Subway, Steve's documentary:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocsn3yRN0w4Thoughts? The Mime and Monk Show is inspired by the Charlie McCarthy Show, with its absurd premise of listening to a ventriloquist on the radio so you just take their word for it that he wasn't moving his lips. For Mime and Monk, you have to take the narrator's word for everything.Credits:The opening and post-commercial music clips were from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950), and the closing music was from Killer Bait (1949), both films in the public domain. The Japanese remake of the Canadian cult classic, "Cube," will be available for streaming on SCREAMBOX from April 11 as a SCREAMBOX Original. It will also be available on VOD platforms via Cinedigm and Bloody Disgusting on the same day. The movie features a group of strangers waking up in a mysterious room filled with deadly traps and working together to survive. Original Cube writer-director Vincenzo Natali serves as an executive producer. Subscribe today at https://bit.ly/3Fu6lxx for the latest episodes. We almost gave away our opinion of tonight's movie in the opening act, but we promise not to spoil it. Linda Blair is making an appearance in the upcoming Blumhouse sequel to the original Exorcist film, but we recommend watching her performance in Repossessed. We discuss the movie Scott Pilgrim, which is getting an anime adaptation with the original cast reprising their roles. The movie features video game-like elements and a plot where the main character must defeat his girlfriend's seven evil ex-boyfriends. Universal Studios is remaking the 1956 horror film The Mole People, which we question the reasoning behind. However, we mention an adult swim show called Saul of the Mole Men that may have been inspired by the original film. We speculate about a potential Harry Potter TV show on HBO and jokingly suggest a show focused on bad wizards who couldn't get into the school. Tonight's movie is Corvette Summer, starring Mark Hamill and Annie Potts. Dangerous Dave gets fixated on the salary of a high school teacher in the 1980s while discussing box office success. We discuss a new Cube horror movie dropping on Screambox on April 11th and reminisce about the original 1997 Cube movie. We briefly mention horror movies shot on video and wonder if a deer feels shame and has to put on clothes. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Beverly Washburn started acting in 1950 at the age of 6, and has not slowed down since. In part one, we talk about her youth, the challenges of being a child actor, and getting her start with the help of fabled stuntman and actor, Jock Mahoney. She tells me about Superman and the Mole-Men, working with the likes of Cecille B. DeMille, George Stevens, and Frank Capra, and her long friendship with the great Jack Benny. And, of course, we talk about Spider Baby, or the Maddest Story Ever Told, and about working with the legendary Lon Chaney, Jr. Find out more about Beverly here: Beverly Washburn And buy her memoir, Reel Tears: The Beverly Washburn Story, at a local book store. This week, we've reached a real milestone! First, the Pop Culture Historians break down the two Superman movie serials. We marvel at how good 1948's SUPERMAN really was, and remake on how 1950's ATOM MAN VS SUPERMAN introduces arguably one of the biggest supervillains ever. Finally, we dig into 1952's SUPERMAN VS. THE MOLE MEN, a theatrical pilot to the 50's television show. It's George Reeves' debut, folks! Truth, justice and the American way all await you this week on Pop Culture Historians!
