What's up, dudes? It was a huge upset for Boston, but Knicks fans came out happy! Jeff Loftin from Lost Christmas is with me to talk all about the 1985 Celtics v Knicks Christmas Day game! What began as a rout by the Celtics ended in utter defeat, as their tendency to be complacent showed up. The Boston Celtics had a twenty-five point lead at one point during the game. Starters Bird, Ainge, McHale, and DJ had some off shooting, but nailed most of their free throws. Of course, this creates a commanding lead as Ewing was held to just two points for a long while.Eventually, the Knicks came alive. The end of the third quarter saw them go on a phenomenal run, drastically outscoring Boston. Subsequently, they trounced Boston in the fourth to tie the game and force overtime. In the first, the Celtics held their own and kept it at a tie. The second overtime saw the Knicks defeat their foe 113-104.Larry Bird? Kind of. Kevin McHale? Sort of. Celtics bench? Nowhere to be found! What's up, dudes? It's Christmas Eve! Yes, today begins Christmastide. To celebrate, I've got Thom Crowe from ‘Tis the Podcast and Art Kilmer from A Cozy Christmas with to talk about the Octavo Kalendas Ianuarii. The Proclamation of the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ is a traditional chant that summarizes salvation history.Originally a part of the office of Prime, the chant was effectively abolished with the reform of Vatican II. That all changed in 1980 when Pope John Paul II re-introduced it prior to the Nativity of The Lord: Mass During the Night. While not in its traditional placement, it still ushered in Christmas grandly. One could even argue, it brought the Proclamation to more prominence. The chant runs through salvation history, beginning from the creation of the world. Then, it catalogues major events of the Judeo-Christian faith: the creation of man, the great flood, the sacrifice of Abraham, the exodus from Egypt. After listing David and Daniel, it segues into secular history with the Olympiad and the reign of Caesar Augustus. It ends on a triumphant note with the actual birth of Christ.Reciting tones? Yep. Historical Cliff's Notes? Uh huh. Elevated pitch for the mention of Christ's birth? Only if everyone has to genuflect as well! So grab your missal, put on your cassock and surplice, and pray along to this episode on the Kalenda: The Proclamation of the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ!'Tis the PodcastFB: @tisthepodcastBlueSky: @tisthepodcast.bsky.socialIG: @tisthepodcastFB Group: Tis the Podcast GroupA Cozy ChristmasFB: @cozychristmaspodcastIG: @cozychristmaspodcastBlueSky: @cozychristmas.bsky.socialGive us a buzz! What's up, dudes? ‘Tis the season to be shopping! Hopefully you found the toys for which you were looking. We definitely wouldn't want a Jingle All the Way situation. On Monday, December 12, 1983, Carol Ann Campbell, staff writer for the York Daily Record, published an article. In “The Quest for a Very Dashing Hulk of Plastic,” she interviews several retail store owners. They enumerate the problem of low orders and large sales booms. Poor sales the previous two holiday seasons resulted in manufacturer overproduction and post-Christmas toy surpluses. Consequently, parents are scouring their communities and nearby cities to find the one gift their children each want. From He-Man to My Little Pony, from Cabbage Patch Kids to Knight Rider, toys are selling out faster than stores can stock them. Some parents, however, are turning toward perennial board game favorites like Battleship. Kiddie Town? Check. K&K Toys? Got it. Toys ‘R' Us? Today we're talking the Toys “R” Us Christmas Dream Book 1985!Toys “R” Us goes all the way back to 1948, when Charles Lazarus opened a little Washington, D.C. shop called Children's Bargain Town, selling baby furniture. Eventually he pivoted from cribs and strollers to playthings. In 1957, Lazarus opened the first store under the Toys “R” Us name, built like a supermarket for toys—long aisles, stacked shelves, self-service shopping, and wall-to-wall kids' stuff. This book provides a huge variety of toys. From ThunderCats to Cabbage Patch Kids, there's something for everyone. The My Little Pony Dream Castle provided hours of fun, and Snake Mountain gave the evil warriors a lair to lure Eternian Heroes. What's up, dudes? You never knew Santa had a donkey? Well, Jeff Loftin from Lost Christmas and Alamo City Santa Jeremy Phelps did. In fact, they're here with me to talk all about the Rankin Bass special “Nestor the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey!”Nestor was born with abnormally long ears. His owner mistreated him, and the other animals teased him. One night when Roman soldiers came to the stable to buy donkeys, they dismiss Nestor and take all the other donkeys for free. Enraged, Olaf casts Nestor out into the frigid cold. Nestor's mother finds him and shields from the harsh weather with her own body, freezing to death in the process. The next day, Nestor meets a cherub named Tilly, who says that they need to travel to Bethlehem. When they reach the outskirts of the town, Tilly returns to Heaven, instructing Nestor to wait. When Mary and Joseph are expecting Jesus, they take Nestor because of his "gentle eyes", but are caught in a sandstorm. In the midst of the storm, Nestor hears Tilly's voice, but recognizes it as his mother's. She tells him to follow the voices of the angels. Nestor guides Mary and Joseph through the storm, while wrapping Mary in his ears to keep her warm. They arrive in Bethlehem, where Nestor finds the stable where Mary gives birth to Jesus. Nestor heads back home where he is hailed as hero by Olaf and the other animals. Santa? Check. The Holy Family? Yep. Spieltoe? Never thought Santa had a pack mule! What's up, dudes? It's the 40th anniversary of Santa Claus: The Movie! Pax Holley from Cult Film Club, Crestwood House, and I Read Movies is with me to talk all about the novelization! Santa Claus: The Movie was released in 1985, and it chronicled the origin of the Jill old elf himself. Eventually, it transitions into anDudley Moore vehicle as his elf character Patch takes center stage. Patch feels unappreciated and sets out into the world to prove himself. The novelization fills some plot points the movie left out due to time constraints. For example, the elves used to deliver the gifts themselves, but stopped as it grew harder. Also, in preparation for the big flight, they built a simulator for Santa. The novelization even explains why Santa has to go down chimneys due to modern man's lack of trust in one another. Oh, and Patch returns to the Pole and shares Santa's assistant duties with Puffy.Sleigh flight simulator? Check. Confirmation of Cornelia's adoption? For sure. Kids writing letters to Santa apologizing for their lack of faith? Definitely! It's the classic “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving!” Will he ever kick the football?Charlie Brown gets a phone call from Peppermint Patty, who invites herself, Marcie and Franklin to Chuck's house for dinner. As it turns out, he is not having dinner and can't cook anything. Consequently, Linus suggests that they prepare a meal for their friends before they go to grandma's, and recruits Snoopy and Woodstock to help. The gang then prepare a feast of toast, popcorn, pretzel sticks, jelly beans, and sundaes. After the guests arrive, Linus leads the group in prayer before Snoopy serves the meal. Peppermint Patty, who expected turkey and other traditional Thanksgiving food, angrily yells at Charlie Brown, who leaves the table dejected. Marcie berates her and apologize to Chuck for her. Realizing that he and Sally are late for the Brown family dinner, Charlie Brown explains the situation over the phone to his grandmother, who invites all his friends to come along for dinner.Pilgrim dog? What's up, dudes? Mike Westfall of Advent Calendar House and Tim Babb from Can't Wait for Christmas are with me to talk all about the genius that is Al Yankovic! Even Caleb Cote from Insert Reference Here pops in to dive into Weird Al “Christmas at Ground Zero!”The song is a throwback to the Phil Spector “wall of sound” era, full of bari sax and keyboard layers. Of course, in Al fashion, he copies the style to perfection. Harmonically, it's a simple I-vi-ii-V chord progression reminiscent of the 1960s.Lyrically, the song is awash in Cold War nuclear disaster tropes. Yankovic's label, Scotti Brothers Records, insisted that he record a Christmas album. However, after Yankovic presented the song to his label, they relented, because it was "a little different from what they were expecting." After the song was written and recorded, Yankovic wanted to release the song as a commercial single, but Scotti Bros. refused. Eventually, Scotti Bros. released the song as a promotional single and then commercially.Sleigh bells ringing? Check. Trimming the tree? Uh huh. Atom bombs dropping? Only if it creates new mutants! Before X-Men hit theaters, there was Generation X — a 1996 made-for-TV movie that tried to bring Marvel's mutants to life with neon colors, mid-'90s slang, and some very questionable CGI. Laramy is joined by Gerry D from Totally Rad Christmas to talk about this early attempt at superhero television, the changes from the comics, and why the movie still has a certain nostalgic charm. From Emma Frost's questionable teaching methods to Russell Tresh's over-the-top villainy, we explore what worked, what didn't, and how Fox eventually delivered on what this film promised.

What's up, dudes? They're a legendary metal band whose songs were played all the time on MTV. Yes, we're talking Stryper! I've got the incredible Michael Sweet with me to talk about their 1984 singles “Reason for the Season” and “Winter Wonderland!” We also dive into their new album The Greatest Gift of All available this year in November. The boys lay down an eighth note riff in “Reason for the Season,” and modulate for the chorus. The song is full of their dual lead guitar, harmonized in 3rds for texture and interest. After coming to a rocked out climax, it ends with harmonics and acoustic and clean tone electrics. The tight vocal pads give an ethereal feeling contrasting with the previous heavy straightforward rock vibe.Released in December ‘84, the single had a Stryperized version of the classic “Winter Wonderland” as a B-side. This time the band gave the song a swing eighth-triplet riff. After some introductory dialogue, they launch into it, and segue nicely into a triplet dual lead solo. Uniquely, a turnaround transitions to an Elvis inspired bluesy half time rendition of the chorus. And now, this year the band has a new Christmas album! Stryper The Greatest Gift of All is full of classics and original tunes. From a lush and calming “Silent Night” to an uptempo “Joy to the World,” it has it all. The album even ends with re-recordings of their two ‘80s singles, updating them sonically and ending with a bang!Guitar? Check. Soaring vocals? Yep. Full on Stryper vibes? Definitely! What's up, dudes? It's ‘80s Swedish metal, and it's rad! Duane Bailey from Tinsel Tunes and Matt Wheeler from Resurrection Metal Radio join me to talk 220 Volt “Heavy Christmas!”The song is almost thrash metal in delivery, with 16th note riffs alternate picked. Some syncopation adds interest to the main riff. In fact, F# minor pentatonic is embellished with chromaticism to add even more flare to the riff. Then, during the pre-chorus, a descending sixteenth line leads into the vocals, guitars doubling the vox to give it a huge sound.Further, the band re-recorded the song and updated it musically. For example, they added sleighbells to the intro, and quoted some Christmas carols before heading into full on thrash. Also, the guitar solo is more traditional shredding rather than sound effects. What's up, dudes? Hey you! Michael May from After Lunch, Crestwood House, and Hellbent for Letterbox is with me to talk Robert Smith! Yes we're digging into Christmas songs by The Cure!On December 9, 1987, The Cure came out for a fourth encore and blasted through a cover of “Merry Christmas Everybody” by Slade. It was the final song on the third night at Wembley, the final show of The Kissing Tour.Delving deeper, many of their songs allude to Christmas or romanticize Christmas as a state of happiness and content. For example, “Let's Go to Bed,” Christmas is the metaphor for physical excitement and anticipation. Further, in “Other Voices,” a song about the sickness of lust, the protagonist asks his paramour to come around at Christmas for a festive compromise.Similarly, in “Hey, You,” Smith asks the one who looks like Christmas to come kiss him. “The Snakepit” and “Last Dance” also reflect themes of nostalgia and melancholy and Christmas.Driving basslines? Check. Layered guitar and synths? Got ‘em. Eye liner and lipstick? Definitely!
