There's arguably no superhero in existence that has been reimagined, redefined, or reinterpreted more than Batman. No matter how many times he's been rebooted, audiences are always willing to come back to Gotham City's greatest defender. With so much Bat content out there, there's plenty to dissect, analyze, and of course, rank! This podcast is dedicated to a surgical evaluation of Batman's history, with a focus on ranking several topics in the world of Batman, among other classic Bat themes and characters.Join hosts Daniel Cohen, Pop Break's former Film Editor, and Kris Ingersoll, co-host of the Media/Lit podcast, as they bring on several guests every month to share their passion for the one and only Dark Knight. From Adam West to Robert Pattinson, no bat stone will be left unturned. Bottom-line: If you're a Batman fan, this is required listening. It's time to break out the crystals this month for a SUPERMAN BY THE NUMBERS podcast! That's right, pack your parkas, because we're going to the Fortress of Solitude. As we all know, DC's other big superhero has a big movie coming out this summer. As this is the year of World's Finest, it's time to ramp up our coverage, and what better way to do our first ever Superman centric episode then by ranking the actors who have played the iconic Man of Steel. With Superman, we couldn't relegate this to just film. While Superman has some big movies for sure, his presence in live action television is just as prevalent, as these shows span multiple decades, and cover different periods of Kal-El's life. Don't worry – all the big TV appearances are covered! From the 1950s, to this decade, and all across film and television, this is the Superman rankings you need to hear!Making their return for this epic ranking episode is the co-host of the Anniversary Brothers Podcast and Anime X Pop, Josh Sarnecky, and podcasting director of the pop break, Alex Marcus. And per usual, Alex has his obligatory General Zod moment against Dan. Find out which ranking got Dan's blood boiling this time. If you're a Superman fan, this is a spectacular trip down memory lane, and all divisive Superman takes are spiritedly debated, including what is one of the most epic ranking ties in the history of this podcast. You'll have to listen to find out why!
In this pod, recorded WAY back in October, Nick updates us on Geoff Boycott's car keys for measuring cracks in cricket pitches, and Steve goes into the infrared to explore one of Herschel's most famous discoveries. We also find out about SpaceX's chopsticks and discuss how General Zod was freed from captivity by a nuclear bomb.
What if we created our own Sinister Five team composed of Superman's rogues to take on the Man of Steel? That's the task at hand as Mari, Bryce, and Brandon sit down to form their rogue team to challenge Superman. With Lex Luthor, Brainiac, General Zod, and Darkseid off the table, who will they select? Join the conversation and stay updated on the podcast by following Comic Talkers on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok @comictalkers. In the 2013 movie Man of Steel, the villain General Zod arrives on Earth and seeks to wipe out the human race in order to make a new home world like his destroyed home world of Krypton. Superman must step up and stop Zod or the world he’s come to know and love will be utterly wiped out. In Psalm 124, King David remembers such a time where the nation of Israel was in danger of being wiped out but the LORD stepped in and rescued His people. This same LORD has purchased and delivered for Himself a people for His own possession. Are you His?
We are back and this time with a proper movie. We watched Young Guns from 1988. There were 80's heartthrobs all over the place in what bizarrely seems to be maybe the most historically accurate film depicting the Lincoln County War. That's right, this is a biopic about Billy the Kid. Spoiler alert, it is kind of serious and Bon Jovi is nowhere to be seen. We think all of our preconceived notions about this film were from Young Guns 2. Come along with us as we see a Fagan-like General Zod teach a wayward band of misfits about how to be cultured only to be gunned down in the streets by a business rival. We get to see all of the shootin and cussin and jokes about bodily functions you would want in a film like this. We have one of the wildest drug scenes in the history of film. We get a little buns shot for the ladies from Coach Bombay that sadly does nothing for Jenny. We get a less DILFy Dermot Mulrooney who nobody knew yet, so he has to just be gross. Did we mention Lou Diamond Phillips and Howard Hughes are in this? Watch this movie and then come along for the ride on something that was even more forbidden than we realized.

Today's episode is a little bit controversial. But only in the sense that it was almost universally disliked once it came out. Controversial because the graphics and CGI that were used, were WAY below what a $200 million movie should be putting out. We are of course talking about The Flash. "Worlds collide when the Flash uses his superpowers to travel back in time to change the events of the past. However, when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, he becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation. With no other superheroes to turn to, the Flash looks to coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian -- albeit not the one he's looking for." Like always, we do think that every topic we speak about, is worth watching, reading, listening to, etc. This is just one of those projects where it hurts to recommend a first watch. It might be high time to revamp the flash, and we think that's exactly what James Gunn is doing! SUBSCRIBE: Apple Podcasts | Android | Spotify | Pandora | RSS Tell us what you think! "Superman II" is a 1980 superhero film and the sequel to the 1978 classic, "Superman: The Movie." The film continues the story of the Man of Steel, Superman, portrayed by Christopher Reeve. The movie begins with Superman saving Paris from a hydrogen bomb launched by terrorists. As he successfully disarms the bomb, he hurls it into space, unknowingly releasing three Kryptonian criminals from the Phantom Zone. These criminals, General Zod (Terence Stamp), Ursa (Sarah Douglas), and Non (Jack O'Halloran), land on Earth, gaining superhuman powers under Earth's yellow sun. They embark on a path of destruction, with Zod declaring himself ruler. Superman confronts Zod and his companions in Metropolis, leading to an epic battle. "Superman II" is celebrated for its memorable performances, thrilling action sequences, and exploration of the personal and ethical dilemmas faced by the iconic superhero. It remains a beloved part of the Superman film canon and a classic of the superhero genre. Some Fun Trivia:In a 2004 interview, Margot Kidder claimed that Richard Donner shot enough scenes to make his own cut of the film, and that the unused footage was "somewhere in a vault". A website started a petition for Warner Bros. to allow and sponsor Donner's cut of this movie. The footage was re-edited into Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut (1980).Gene Hackman (Lex Luthor), Ned Beatty (Otis), Valerie Perrine (Eve Teschmacher) and E.G. Marshall (The President) were the only actors not to participate in the film's re-shoots under the direction of Richard Lester.Gene Hackman did not return to do reshoots for the second film. All of his scenes were originally filmed by Richard Donner. Other scenes shot by the new director that required Hackman used a look-a-like and a voice impersonator to add any lines needed.Christopher Reeve felt that this was the best film in the franchise. The most expensive movie ever made at the time of its release. If you are new to the podcast then please consider following us on the platform that you love, we can be found most anywhere that you listen to your favorite podcasts. It's a MTMUG rerun! We don't have a new episode this week, but we reached into our back cataloge and found the Extended Cut of Superman II with our buddy Billy Roach that originally aired May 6th 2021. This "Extended Cut" keeps in a few tangents that didn't make the original episode. With the annoucment of David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as our new Clark Kent and Lois Lane in James Gunn's upcoming Superman: Legacy its the perfect time to revisit one of our classique episodes! Kneel before Zod!! We watched Superman II (1980) with our friend and Superman expert Billy Roach and we believe a man can fly. We take a deep dive into Superman lore and really get into what makes these early superhero movies so special. Christopher Reeve is an absolute dreamboat as Superman and Margot Kidder is adorably kooky as Lois Lane. But the Kryptonian villains are everything! Giving you disco S&M glamour. Terence Stamp's General Zod is serving early Priscilla Queen of the Desert bored-queen whileSarah Douglas is FIERCE as glamorous Ursa. We can't leave out Valerie Perrine as Lex Luthor's (Gene Hackman) ditzy moll Miss Teschemacher. Trust us, this movie is gayer than you remember. Look there, in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! No, wait... It's actually a Superman movie without "Superman" in the title nor the wildly famous 'Superman Theme!' Although Krypton may be no more after General Zod's attempted coup, we are bringing the most popular Kryptonian there is to the world of BRBR with 2013's Man of Steel. Talk about worlds colliding! Bringing a darker tone to our famed, American superhero, Zack Snyder reintroduces us to the Superman story and introduces us to the one and only Henry Cavill. I'll be honest, I am not a Superman fan and never really have been. But I do see the diehard fans that not only rank this among their favorites in the DCEU but also the Superman movies as well. So I figured I had to drop another certified BRBR First Watch this month and give it a watch. In this one, it's up to our newly minted Superman actor and his shirtless scenes to find his place on Earth and defend its people from Zod and his goons. Despite all of the controversy surrounding Cavill's casting choice, and the overall Superman entry itself, it still brings some solid CGI super-action and is now one of the few DCEU additions from the 2010s that doesn't make me lose my waffles. Can Kal-El save the people of Earth, stop the evil General Zod and flex his shirtless scenes on these bad reviewers? Tune in to find out! If you enjoyed the episode, please rate and share! It goes such a long way and I am so grateful for all of the support. And hey, if you do leave a review of the show, you will be featured as well! How neat is that? Also, be sure to give my official Ko-Fi page a gander. There you can get access to all kinds of cool perks and prizes from your very own shoutout on the show to choosing which movie I cover next. When Barry Allen decides to go through time to stop his mother from being killed, he alters the course of history in unexpected ways that he could have never imagined. In this episode, we have special guest Ivan joining us. We discuss the latest trailers that have caught our attention. We're super excited about Pixar's upcoming film 'Elio,' a thrilling adventure where an 11-year-old kid named Elio (Yonas Kibreab) gets transported across the galaxy and mistaken for the intergalactic ambassador of Earth, starring America Ferrera and Jameela Jamil. 'Kraven the Hunter' delivers intense action as Russian immigrant Sergei Kravinoff (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) embarks on a mission to prove himself as the world's greatest hunter, alongside Russell Crowe and Ariana DeBose. And of course, we can't wait to talk about 'The Flash,' where Ezra Miller returns as Barry Allen, joined by Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Sasha Calle as Supergirl, and Michael Shannon as General Zod. In this episode of "Giant Mess", superhero movie fanatic Neal Lynch review 2023's The Flash starring Ezra Miller, Michael Keaton, and Sasha Calle and explains why the penultimate release from the DCEU wasn't a total dud. SYNOPSIS FROM IMDB: "Worlds collide in 'The Flash' when Barry Allen uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian... albeit not the one he's looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry's only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?" Director: Andy Muschietti Producers: Barbara Muschietti and Michael Disco Writer: Christina Hodson Story by: John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein, Joby Harold Cast: Ezra Miller as Barry Allen / The Flash Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne / Batman Sasha Calle as Kara Zor-El / Supergirl Michael Shannon as General Zod Ron Livingston as Barry's dad, Henry Allen Maribel Verdú as Barry's mom, Nora Allen Kiersey Clemons as journalist Iris West Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne / Batman ABOUT "GIANT MESS": "Giant Mess" is a sloppy sports and entertainment talk show about New York Giants football, Mets baseball, movies, TV shows, funny stories and life lessons. It's hosted by a giant mess, The Real Cinch Neal Lynch. ABOUT NEAL LYNCH: I'm an Irish-Italian-American who graduated from a Catholic high school (but isn't Catholic), and a college known for producing doctors and lacrosse players, then became neither. Michael Shannon talks about his recent TV work as George Jones in the Showtime limited series “George & Tammy,” as well as starring in and producing “Waco: The Aftermath” for Paramount+. He also discusses “The Flash,” in which he reprises his role as General Zod, and more. But first, on the Roundtable, as Emmy Phase 1 voting wraps, we give our predictions for the upcoming Emmy nominations.
WARNING: Do not listen to this episode unless you have seen the 2023 WBD/DC Release of "The Flash” or do not mind hearing key plot points. The Flash is the highly anticipated installment of the DC Extended Universe. It stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen/The Flash. Both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton play a form of Bruce Wayne/Batman. In this loose adaptation of the classic Flashpoint storyline, Barry goes back in time to try and save his mother, who was killed when Barry was a child. Instead, he winds up in a parallel universe and the threat of General Zod played by Michael Shannon. Sasha Calle stars as Supergirl. Marshall Harris of CBS Chicago rejoins the podcast to discuss what went right with the film, and what went wrong. There is not much debate as Harris shares the belief that this film had a plethora of issues. The guys discuss Ezra Miller's performance in The Flash, and the overall state of films based on DC Comics. They discuss DC Co-Chair James Gunn's endorsement of the film and the mixed reaction from fans in the early days of the movie's release.
Join the crew as we dive into the newest DC theatrical release, The Flash! We start off the episode discussing the DC movie that started it all, Man of Steel. Is it the most underrated superhero movie? After that, we briefly cover the trailer that just dropped for Kraven The Hunter! Did it do its job of getting us hyped for the movie? Or did it do the opposite..We dive right into The Flash after that, discussing the opening action sequence, the CGI, and our last sighting of Ben Affleck's Batman/Bruce Wayne. We then discuss whether Ezra Miller x2 worked, and how well the movie handled the glorious return of Michael Keaton. Sasha Calle killed it as Supergirl, and it was great to have General Zod back, but there were a lot of issues in that third act of this movie. We discuss all of that, the future of DC, and MORE! This week on the show, we discuss The Flash, the latest from the now-dead DCEU. (But don't worry, the DCU is fast approaching!) Directed by Andy Muschietti and written by Cristina Hodson; the film stars Sasha Calle as Supergirl, Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck as two different Batmen, and Michael Shannon as General Zod. How does this film adapt the classic Flashpoint story? What are the implications of moving a can of tomato sauce? And how many Batmen is too many Batmen? Editors - Jason Ballantine ACE and Paul Machliss ACE While THE FLASH editors Jason Ballantine ACE and Paul Machliss ACE* both hail from Australia, this latest entry in the DCEU would be their first time meeting one another. Both editors have been advancing their careers away from their homeland for quite some time. Jason has worked in LA for the past ten years, while Paul has been in London for the last twenty. The director who would be responsible for bringing these two together is Andy Muschietti, Jason's director for IT (2017) and IT CHAPTER TWO (2019). The two editors split editing duties pretty much down the middle for THE FLASH, each taking five of the film's ten reels. One thing that did separate them for much of the film's development was geography. While Jason was holding down the fort at Warner Brothers Studios in LA, Paul was on location in the UK for seven months, assembling main unit footage with Muschietti. Following production, Machliss would join Jason in LA for six additional months of editing. And it would be six more months before Ballantine would put the final touches on the highly anticipated "metahuman" movie. Based on the DC Comics character of the same name, THE FLASH is the thirteenth installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The film is directed by Andy Muschietti from a screenplay by Christina Hodson and stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen (The Flash) alongside Ben Affleck, Michael Keaton, Sasha Calle, Michael Shannon, Ron Livingston and Maribel Verdú. In the film, Barry travels back in time to prevent his mother's death, which traps him in an alternate reality without metahumans. Barry enlists the help of; his younger self, an older Batman and the Kryptonian castaway Supergirl in order to save this world from General Zod and return to his universe. JASON BALLANTINE ACE Jason Ballantine began his editing career in the horror genre (one which he would return to often) with the Australian thriller WOLF CREEK (2005). From there he would edit other fright flicks, such as PROM NIGHT (2008), CRUSH (2009) and NEEDLE (2010). But it would be his work on director Andy Muschietti's adaptation of Stephen King's IT (2017) and IT: CHAPTER TWO (2019) that would put an exclamation point on Jason's work in the horror medium. Jason has also previously teamed up with directors Baz Luhrmann and Matthew Vaughn for THE GREAT GATSBY (2013) and THE KING'S MAN (2021) respectively. PAUL MACHLISS ACE While known most prominently for his work with Edgar Wright; SPACED (1999-2001), SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD (2010), THE WORLD'S END (2013), BABY DRIVER (2017) and LAST NIGHT IN SOHO (2021), Paul also edited; the pilot episode of FLEABAG (2016), eighteen episodes of THE IT CROWD (2006-2008) and films such as THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING (2019) and THE GENTLEMEN (2019). For his work on BABY DRIVER, Paul was nominated for an Oscar® alongside co-editor John Amos. * [Publisher's Note] The guests wish to express their regret and apologies for using he/him pronouns in referencing Ezra Miller (they/them).
