The death of Superman. Lobo joins the Justice League. Plus, an unlikely team-up in the future. What a great set of episodes! A team of Rogues, who all hate Superman team up to take him out. Toy Man, Livewire, Weather Wizard, Kalibak, and Metallo work together to attract Superman to the Daily Planet. But the whole League shows up. It is not going well for them until Toy Man uses his robot and power ray to threaten Batman & Wonder Woman. Superman takes the hit and is seemingly vaporized! The League, the planet and the galaxy mourn the death of Superman. But Batman does not believe he is dead. With Superman gone, all the villains come out to take over. Lobo shows up and wants to take Superman's place. The League reluctantly takes him with them as they go after the villains. But Superman is not dead! He has been transported thousands of years in the future. The planet is a wasteland, and the sun is red. He has no powers, so he must use his brain and normal human strength and skills to survive. Following a connection on his coms, he makes his way to the Justice League signal source which turns out to be the crashed remains of the Watchtower.  Vandal Savage is the only human being alive still.  Walking the ravaged Earth on his own for thousands of years. His weapon of gravity caused mass destruction and changed the physics of the solar system, wiping out humankind! And this all happened days after Superman's death! For penance, he decided to stay behind, alone on Earth, even though he was able to build a space craft to take him out into the galaxy. When he sees that Superman is somehow here, after following the coms signal he picked up, he goes to meet the man he once tried to kill. Superman discovers that Savage also built a time machine, and thinks he's found his way home, but unfortunately it needs more power than they have to make it work. Together they must go and steal a known power source that would suffice from a colony of mutated cockroaches.  This energy just happens to be a powerful source of radiation, like a miniature sun, that gives Superman back is abilities, allowing them to succeed. Vandal fills Superman in on exactly what he did to destroy the world and what he must do to stop him, so once the time machine is up and running, Superman returns and saves Batman from a fatal shot fired from above. They rejoice in his return, but his work isn't done. He must find the Savage of this time and stop him at all costs. Holy Kryptonian catastrophe, comic crusaders! This week on Play Comics, we're diving headfirst into the digital dumpster fire that is Superman: Countdown to Apokolips for the Game Boy Advance – because apparently someone thought the best way to honor Superman: The Animated Series was to trap the Man of Steel in a tiny screen prison with graphics that make MS Paint look like the Sistine Chapel. Released in 2003 by the brave souls at Mistic Software (after poor Crawfish Interactive literally died during development – talk about your occupational hazards!), this isometric adventure promised to let players soar through Metropolis while battling Livewire, Metallo, and the fashion disaster known as Kalibak. What it actually delivered was a gaming experience so punishing that even Darkseid would file a complaint with customer service. Joining us for this digital descent into madness is Adam Maresh from my local shop back when he lived by me – a man who's seen more comic-to-game adaptations crash and burn than a rejected Justice League movie pitch. Together, we'll explore how this GBA “gem” managed to score a whopping 45% on GameRankings and somehow convinced IGN to give it a 4.5/10 (which in retrospect feels generous). So grab your emergency kryptonite antidote and prepare for an episode that's more fun than actually playing the game – which, let's face it, isn't exactly setting the bar stratospheric. Will Superman's portable adventure redeem itself through sheer nostalgic charm, or will it crash harder than a Daily Planet exclusive? Peripheral neuropathy afflicts millions of diabetes patients around the world, causing sensations from tingling to pain to complete numbness. For our season finale, we discussed peripheral neuropathy with bioengineer Christian Metallo, whose recent research has uncovered how insulin-regulated metabolism of lipids and amino acids contributes to peripheral neuropathy. Dr. Metallo spoke with us about the inspiration for this research and explained his team's key findings about the links between insulin, the amino acids serine and glycine, and peripheral neuropathy in diabetes patients.
