Santa Claus: The Movie, the Score and Soundtrack (w/ Robert Nicholas)

What's up, dudes? Merry Christmas 2!! “Santa Claus: The Movie” is a fantastic origin story, made better by Henry Mancini's score and a killer song of Sheena Easton. Thus, Robert Nicholas from Behind the Bells joins me to really dig into a particular cue from the “Santa Claus: The Movie” score and dish about the Christmas carol medley of it all as well.First, we get into the nostalgic synths with "It's Christmas All Over the World". Played during the end credits, the mid-tempo song set the stage for the emotions of Christmas, washing over the audience like a warm blanket. Written originally with Freddie Mercury in mind, the song eventually was recorded by Sheena Easton. Likewise, the film also features a track by Aled Jones of "The Snowman" fame.Mancini purposely chose to score and arrange the orchestra as traditionally as possible. Subsequently, his score evoked a sense of wistfulness and comfort, harking back to days of yore. According to an interview with Randall D Larson for CinemaScore in 1987, Mancini stated:"One thing we had to satisfy was that you can't have picture about Christmas or Santa Claus and not touch on the traditional. I decided that it would be a good idea to get all of those numbers in one place, rather than spotting them here and there throughout the film. So on Santa's first flight I used them in a piece by itself, and it all worked out well because the montage was well conceived and it made sense. But from there on we went to original music.”Of course, the piece he was speaking of was "Christmas Rhapsody." The cue begins with a triumphant rendition of Deck the Halls before segueing into Joy to the World. A melodic and intimate version of Hark! The Herald Angels Sing follows, succeeded by The 12 Days of Christmas, God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, and O Tannenbaum. Finally, the cue ends with majesty and serenity with The First Noel and Silent Night.Tchaikovsky-esque instrumentation? Check. Catchy Santa Claus theme? Got it. Synthesizer? Yes, but only if a pop star is singing! So grab your celesta, join the orchestra, and play along to this episode all about the “Santa Claus: The Movie” score and soundtrack!Behind the BellsFB: @BehindtheBellsIG: @behind_the_bells_podcastGive us a buzz! By 1987, Jim Henson had already provided us with so much great entertainment from all his remarkable creations--including some pretty wonderful Christmas specials. But his best was yet to come... this is a look back on A Muppet Family Christmas that first aired on ABC on December 16th, 1987.  We'll look back at one of the best holiday specials of the decade and why it came from a period when everything to do with the Muppets was firing on all cylinders. This show was the ultimate crossover, but some legal issues did emerge and if you weren't watching on that night back in 1987, you probably never saw the true, original special... The hype around Santa Claus the Movie put it at the top of my must-see list in 1985. My family were big Dudley Moore fans and McDonald's was pushing it with a Happy Meal tie-in. So we drove a few towns over to see it the weekend it opened. It was a great movie-going experience with a very well-decorated theater and an appearance by Santa Claus. I was convinced this was going to be a huge hit, but unfortunately it wasn't in the United States (the people in the UK were more impressed). I start the episode talking about when my family went to see the movie and how disruptive Santa's appearance was there. How could you expect a kid to concentrate on on anything when Santa was around? Then I move on the film itself. I discuss the plot, its production, the stars of the film, its reception and much more. There is a lot of Christmas movies and specials you can watch, but I wanted to talk about Santa Claus the Movie because it is often overlooked. In the United States it doesn't get a lot of replays. No 24 hour marathon. Nothing. It might not be, A Christmas Store, but I think as a holiday film its charming and deserves to be remembered.

Thomas and Frank are back, celebrating the holidays with a dive into It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. This chaotic Christmas special has everything you'd expect from the gang—traumatizing childhood flashbacks, ill-advised interventions, and some of the most iconic scenes in the show's history. Join us as we explore how the gang's twisted holiday spirit creates a hilariously unforgettable episode. Behind-the-scenes details, like the inclusion of David Huddleston (Santa from Santa Claus: The Movie), add depth to the humor. Themes of found family and dysfunctional loyalty are at the heart of the episode. This special marked a significant transition for the show, being the last episode in low definition. Memorable Quotes: “Frank's lesson isn't to be a better person; it's that the gang will kill him if he doesn't change.” – Thomas “Throwing rocks at trains—it's the tradition that stuck.” – Frank “They think they're finding the Christmas spirit, but it's always in the most messed-up way possible.” – Frank Call to Action: Loved this episode? It seems strange at first that the producers of the Superman movies would move on to an epic about Santa Claus. But in a way it makes sense. Both Superman and Santa are legendary superheroes, able to cure our pains through magical intervention. Both of them can fly through the air. Both have large supporting casts: Superman has Lois Lane, Jimmy Olson and Perry White, while Santa has Mrs. Claus, the elves and, of course, Dasher, Donner and Blitzen. This 80's Flick brought us the origin story we never knew we wanted and children of the 80's (and early 90's for that matter) saw the Jolly Old Elf come to life on the big screen for the very first time. So sit down with a warm up of cocoa by the fireplace under the glow of the Christmas trees lights as Tim Williams and guest co-host Laramy Wells from "Moving Panels" Podcast discuss “Santa Claus: The Movie” from 1985 on this episode of the 80's Flick Flashback Podcast! Here are some additional behind the scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: In a 2019 interview John Lithgow said, "It's just one of the tackiest movies I've ever been in. It seemed cheesy and it certainly never stuck ... except in England. It is huge over there. I wish I had a nickel for every Englishman who's told me [it's their favorite film]. In today's program, it's our 2022 Christmas Special. We've been putting this show together annually since 2018 and I want to thank personally J. Blake Fischa for making sure we did produce this show this year. I've been so ridiculously busy during the latter stages of this year that I didn't think I'd have time to put this together. I really thought that All Request Christmas was going to be our Christmas Special this year but Blake DM'd me on Twitter and ask if we were going to do the show.  I said, "No".  I got a reply back with just the letter "K". I know it's tough to reading tone online but I could just feel the disappointment. So, I slept on it, woke up the next day and wrote Blake back saying, "You know what... I got to thinking last night and I think we should still do the Holiday Celebration episode anyway. It's something that all of us at CSR can work on together. So, yes, we are going to do our annual Christmas show as well as the All Request Show." So there, you can thank Blake for this show and we will always put together an annual Christmas show for you from now on. I promise! Before we begin I just want to again personally offer my thanks to the great team here at Cinematic Sound Radio.   55 new shows went out this year including this one and not including any new shows that go up from now until the end of the year. We are almost 25,000 downloads away from 500,000 total downloads since we made this show a podcast... or at least as long as I've been tracking the show on Podtrac and Chartable. We are up 101,000 downloads since this time last year, which is incredible. We've been ranking in the top 200 all over the world. People really like the show and so I have to send out a big thanks to Jason Drury, Eric Silver, J. Blake Fichera, Robert Daniels, Randy Andrews, the voice of CSR Tim Burden, in-house composer David Coscina, and Ley Bricknell. And of course, I cannot forget you... the listener. Thank you very much for spending some time with us today! And a big shout out to the Cinematic Sound Radio Patreon family. It's been a great year conversing with you, getting to talk to some of you personally on the show and as well as sharing some of your favourite music on the podcast via the All Request Show, which is one of my favourite things ever in the 26-year history of the show. I can't wait to do more in 2023. As we did over the course of the past FIVE years, this show is a collaborative effort. Each participating host will get a segment of their own on the program to play whatever festival score they see fit. On today's program, seven CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST hosts join me again to celebrate the holiday season by playing Christmas-themed music from a wide variety of film, TV and video game scores. Join Robert Daniels from OBSCURE SCORES, Jason Drury from THE ARCHIVE & TALKING SOUNDTRACKS, Ley Bricknell from FILMIC, J. Blake Fichera from SCORED TO DEATH RADIO, Randy Andrews from THE ANIME SPECTACULAR & THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS, Eric Silver from THE 1UPBEAT, the voice of CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO, Tim Burden and me, Erik Woods, for our annual Yuletide spectacular. On the show today, you are going to hear a wide variety of Christmas / Holiday / Winter themed music including DIDDY KONG RACING, FATE/GRAND ORDER. THE CHRISTMAS DRAGON, CLAUS FAMILY 3, CHRISTMAS CAROL: THE MOVIE, A CHRISTMAS HORROR STORY. SANTA CLAUS: THE MOVIE and A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS. Merry Christmas and happy holidays! Anna and Derek fly solo in this episode to debate whether the Clauses met their demise before the elves showed up, if Santa maybe should have been a bit more concerned about Joe and much more during their discussion of the under-the-radar holiday flick Santa Claus: The Movie (1985). The idea for the podcast came when they realized just how much they talk – a lot – when watching films from their favorite cinematic era. Their wedding theme was “a light nod to the ‘80s,” so there's that, too. Both hail from the Midwest but have called Los Angeles home for several years now. Anna is a writer who received her B.A. in Film/Video from Columbia College Chicago and M.A. in Film Studies from Chapman University. Her dark comedy short She Had It Coming was an Official Selection of 25 film festivals with several awards won for it among them. Derek is an attorney who also likes movies. It is a point of pride that most of their podcast episodes are longer than the movies they cover.

Simon Barber, co-host of the Sodajerker on Songwriting podcast, joins us for our festive finale to 2022: and it's a doozy! The producing team behind the original Superman: The Movie (1978), its first two sequels and the spin-off Supergirl (1984) turned their attention to another origin story for a much-loved supernatural hero in 1985, and brought us Santa Claus: The Movie. Featuring Dudley Moore as a cheery elf determined to modernise the North Pole, David Huddlestone as the titular jolly gift-giver and scenery-munching John Lithgow as the nefarious business tycoon B.Z., the film has everything you could ever want in seasonal family adventure. Highlights include abducting homeless children to take them on flying reindeer joyrides with dangerous manoeuvres near the Twin Towers in Manhattan, John Lithgow screaming "FOR FREE?!!" and turning beetroot red when Dudley Moore attempts to explain the act of giving a gift, and Aled Jones singing on a glorious soundtrack by Henry Mancini. But is it the gift that keeps on giving, or is it failed super-dooper looper? Find out! Follow Simon Barber on Twitter, if it still exists, and visit the Sodajerker website. Tis the season for Dudley Moore dressed as an elf, Cousin Eddie kidnapping Clark's boss, a holiday party at Nakatomi Plaza, and Bill Murray being visited by three ghosts. And while Santa Claus The Movie, Christmas Vacation, Die Hard, and Scrooged are classics, we cannot forget the gold standard for holiday movies. Of course I'm talking about 1983's A Christmas Story. In fact it's so treasured it runs on a 24 hour loop every Christmas Eve through Christmas Day. But today we're not talking about A Christmas Story, today we're talking about it's belated sequel, A Christmas Story Christmas. Can this new version hold up. Will it be the next Maverick or God forbit the next Coming To America 2. Today on Buzzn The Tower we'll dive into another attempt to relive the 1980s as we discuss A Christmas Story Christmas. I'm Mo Shapiro and joining me as always the most emotionally fragile person I know, Max Sanders. And with that, I triple dog dare you!
