Your TV signal wobbles. An alien voice (albeit one with a Southern English accent...) seizes control of your set. And, instead of newsreader Andrew Gardner reporting on the Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army, you hear a voice claiming to be ‘Vrillon', of Ashtar Galactic Command, with a message for humanity. Such was the experience for viewers attempting to watch the ITV Evening News on Southern TV on 26th November, 1977 - an incident which became infamous in the ‘signal-jamming' pantheon of the twentieth-century. Nobody has ever claimed responsibility. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly compare ‘Vrillon' to its US counterpart, the ‘Max Headroom' incident; unpick the idea that the broadcast was part of the Raelian movement; and explain how Twitter ruined signal-jamming pranks forever... There is no road to Salmon Beach, so lace up your hiking boots. Join high school filmmaker Rowan Hinds and anthropologist Andrew Gardner as they guide you down the hill—past the bluff, beneath the madronas and into a shoreline community perched between tide and cliff. Reachable only by boat or a steep staircase, the beach you'll discover hugs a narrow bend of Puget Sound known as the Tacoma Narrows. It's home to 81 cabins on stilts and neighbors simply call themselves “Beachers.” Life here moves to the rhythm of the tide, the scent of salt air and the slow churn of generations. You'll hear stories of cannon blasts, chainsaw diplomacy, creaking decks and driftwood forts. Listen as archival voices—captured through film and oral histories—recall landslides, fire and the rare joy of racing rowboats on the Fourth of July cheered on by a homegrown marching band. Raised by hand over time, with help from neighbors and materials scavenged from Galloping Gertie and Ruston's old lumber yards, the cabins we visit carry the spirit of improvisation and care. Inside, voices shaped by saltwater, king tides and shared memory echo between the pilings. And when you head back up the hill, you carry with you a portrait of community carved into the rugged edge of the Pacific Northwest. “I regard almost every single person on Salmon Beach as my neighbor. I would even go as far to say as family because, as the saying, goes you can't choose your family; but you can choose your friends and you can't really choose who you live with at Salmon Beach. So, in that way, they become family.” ~Rowan Hinds
We are joined by Ps Andrew Gardner who brings a great message on The Work of the Spirit in our lives. In this powerful exploration of spiritual rebirth, we delve into Jesus' conversation with Nicodemus in John 3. The concept of being 'born again' is unpacked, revealing it's not just about water baptism, but a profound spiritual transformation. We're challenged to consider: are we truly alive in Christ, or merely going through religious motions? The parallel drawn between physical birth and spiritual rebirth is striking - just as a newborn's first breath signifies life, so too does the infilling of the Holy Spirit breathe true life into our faith. This message urges us to seek not just forgiveness of sins, but the transformative power of God's Spirit dwelling within us. It's a call to move beyond surface-level faith and experience the depth of God's presence, allowing His Spirit to cleanse us and flow through us like living water.

Breathe Pictures Photography Podcast: Documentaries and Interviews
In this episode, I'm joined by a former frontline military photographer whose camera has been trained on the complexities of human nature through the lens of conflict and resilience over the course of three decades. But it was one small slip, a dropped lens cap, that nearly cost Gary Ramage his life. We discuss the moments behind the images, the weight of documenting conflict, and how one decision in a war zone can alter everything. We also talk about what it means to return from the intensity of conflict zones and adjust to the quiet normality of everyday life—how you make sense of war when the world around you carries on as if nothing happened. Also on the show and from the mailbag, John Kenny introduces the curious sport of shin-kicking (don't try this at home), Tony Lorenzo tackles imposter syndrome with style, and 35mm film. Andrew Gardner tells a story with a radioactive twist, (perhaps), Graham Harries talks about urbex, and Paul Hutson sets June's One Word Assignment. Links to all guests and features will be on the show page, my sincere thanks to Arthelper, who sponsor this show, plus our Extra Milers, without whom we wouldn't be walking each week. Welcome to a super special episode -- not just because we are approaching our 500th episode, though I've gotta say I'm pretty proud of that, and so grateful to all of the artists who've given their time and been open to this conversation, but also because this episode features one of my favorite interviews from the podcast so far this year. I have been a deep admirer of Happy Landings' music, and Matty Hendley's soulfulness and poeticism as a singer and writer, since the band came into our radar, and I loved hearing him and the entire band (Keegan Christensen (vocals, keys), Jacob Christensen (drums), Andrew Gardner (fiddle, vocals), and Wilson Moyer (bass/guitar, vocals) share so many meaningful facets of their creative journey in this conversation. We talked about the excellent new album coming out this year, playing major festivals, living in a state of gratitude, the band's genesis in Oxford at Ole Miss and much more.

Actor and educator Charles Andrew Gardner is starting his fourth term as president of the Chicago local branch of the union SAG-AFTRA.He grew up in Chicago and studied acting at Northern Illinois University. He is a company member with TimeLine Theater and has acted on several of Chicago's important stages. He has appeared on the Chicago-filmed TV shows “The Chi” and “Chicago P.D.,” and his film credits include “Long Ride Home” and “Olympia.” He has also shot several national commercials for brands including Hyundai and Liberty Mutual, and he has many credits as a voiceover artist. This interview took place a little over five weeks after SAG-AFTRA, having failed to reach an agreement with AMPTP (the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers), went on strike on July 14, 2023. At the core of the disagreement between the actors and the producers is the amount of residuals actors should receive for streamed content. Also on the negotiating table are the burdens on actors of self-taped auditions, the amount producers should contribute to the union's healthcare and pension funds and how the use of AI-generated likenesses of performers should be regulated. Here Charles explains why he chose to remain in his hometown as he set out on his acting career and how a passion for education continues to inform his leadership style as he shepherds his fellow union members through this latest challenge.https://www.charlesandrewgardner.com/

Everyone in advertising is aware that our job is to "create emotional connections" with our audiences. While emotion is unarguably a strong driver of behavior change, emotion based interventions only work when we are able to correctly identify true emotions --this is something that our industry struggles with when it comes to doctors. Doctor's emotions are not simply a mirror of their patient's emotions, nor are they always even related. Listen as we sit down with this week's guest, chief strategy officer Andrew Gardner, as we discuss how doctors actually feel, BS assumptions that are often made about how we think they feel, and approaches to insight generation that will help us get to more a more accurate understanding. Velocio co-founder Andrew Gardner enjoys biking in many different forms, and earlier this fall, he and Jonathan Ellsworth went on a gravel ride through New England — which Jonathan, something of a gravel biking skeptic, found to be delightful. So Andrew, Jonathan, and David Golay sat down to talk about gravel riding and how / why mountain bikers might find it to be more enjoyable than we think; the ways that the various biking communities silo themselves off, and how that serves many people poorly; why “gravel” riding is a lousy term; and a whole lot more.TOPICS & TIMES:Jonathan's introduction to gravel riding (4:50)David's (lack of) gravel experience (9:58)Andrew's background in all bike disciplines (12:11)Why the term “gravel” isn't very accurate (20:36)Gravel as a race discipline vs. just a way people ride bikes (24:35)Identity as a bike rider & siloed cliques (31:22)Re-defining the term “gravel” (35:17)The case for mountain bikers trying gravel riding (44:17)Velocio (54:53)RELATED LINKS:Blister + Spot InsuranceBlister Summit 2023Become a Blister MemberBlister LabsThis Week's Gear GiveawayBlister Mountain Bike Buyer's GuideOUR OTHER PODCASTSOff The CouchGEAR:30Blister PodcastCRAFTED Hosted on Acast.
